Hikari by: Sakura

A/N I bet a lot of you got lost in Belonging, huh? That's my fault, because I'm a lazy person who didn't feel like helping you guys out. But now, now is the chance to change all that! This fic will hopefully answer any questions you have or had about Hikari.

~*~*~*~*~

"…the end." Hikari had often been told the story of Hi-chan. She loved that story; it was her favorite. It was about a lonely fire she-demon who had been overly strong, and was shunned by all her kin. Hikari enjoyed the folktale because it reminded her of herself. Just like Taki-bi from the story, she too had been born with unusual powers. Though Hikari was strong for her age, she knew her parents would never be like Taki-bi's; they would never abandon her.

It was now Hikari's tenth birthday. Her parents had told her that they needed to discuss something with her. Hikari thought nothing of it. If anything, it was discussing her presents. She met up with her parents in the assigned place to meet. Her family looked doleful as they explained to her of the situation and their decision. Then they told her: "You must leave."

After that, Hikari wondered around aimlessly. She now had no where to go. Now and then, some of the more friendlier demons would allow her to stay with them. Unfortunately, she'd never get to stay for very long, because once they found out about her reputation, she was kicked out.

Hikari soon learned that no matter how hard she tried, she would never be able to live with these other demons. True they had been kind at first, but it never stayed that way. The fire demon learned from her mishaps, and decided to make her own shelter. She found a secluded area in the east, and made her home there.

One day, Hikari wandered into, what she thought, was a nice, quite area of the Makai. As she walked further into the area, she began to sense a group of demons headed her way; but still she walked on. Furthermore, the demons spotted Hikari, calling her an intruder. Not exactly enjoying the intruder in their territory, the youkai began chasing the fire demon.

Hikari was a fire youkai, so once the gang of thugs began their chase, Hikari made her speedy getaway. Hikari ran a few meters before turning to face her pursuers. Her eyes flashed once, before turning an eerie red color. Bright orange flames were now emitting from her petite body. Once her ki reached a certain limit, the flames shot forth killing all that stood in their way. Hikari's eyes turned back to their original ruby color, but widened as she saw the half-dozen dead youkai lying at her feet. She ran off, not noticing that a small youkai was following her.

When she had made it to her hideout, and was safe, she recalled seeing a young fire demon in the gang chasing after her. He wore an ebony cloak, with matching boots, and a white scarf. His eyes were the same ruby color as Hikari's, but somehow they were different. They were cold and vile. Hikari turned when she heard someone behind her. Her eyes widened as she realized it was the small youkai draped in black.

Occasionally, Hikari would see the black-veiled youkai walk by her hideout. She'd smile, but he would never return her hospitality. Once when the demon walked by, Hikari noticed a crystal gem around the boy's neck. She grabbed his arm, forcing him to sit beside her. She eyed the gem prudently, and then looked up at the young youkai. "I'm Hikari," the she-demon said smugly.

The cloaked demon replied, "Hiei."

Hikari nodded, then smiled. "Hiei, have you ever heard the story of Hi-chan?" The young demon shook his head. "…It all started about five hundred years ago… Taki-bi was wandering the Makai with her parents when they were attacked by youkai; Taki-bi showed no mercy in brutally slaughtering the demons. Though she was still very young, Taki-bi had been born with superb power. Her parents had forbidden her to play with any other youkai, fearing that she might hurt them. As Hi-chan, which they favored calling her, grew older, the more her powers became more resistant. Then one day, Hi-chan's parents grew bored with having to cover up for their daughter's mistakes. They then told her that she must live on her own, take blame for her own actions. And well, here I am…" Hikari pointed to herself. "I'm not exactly Taki-bi, but my story is just as true as hers."

Hiei stared at Hikari, a looked of bewilderment on his face. That's okay. Hikari hadn't really expected Hiei to take it any differently. "…and what about you? Why weren't you with your parents, tomodachi?" Hikari giggled softly as Hiei's eyes grew even wider.

Tomodachi? Never in his life would Hiei even dream of being called somebody's friend. Quietly, Hiei began, "I'm the son of a Koorime named Hina. Since I was neither female nor true Koorime, they decided to cast me off the side of their home, the floating ice island." Hiei sighed and continued. "This," he held up the gem around his neck, "this is a tear gem. Koorime tears turn into gems like these. My mother cried this when I was born…" Now it was Hikari's turn to be shocked.

~*~*~*~*~

After their talk, neither demon chose to talk, or even look at one another. This had been the first time either of them had shared their past with anyone. The grief inside grew bigger once they told their tale. It had been nearly two weeks since they had last seen each other.

Hikari wandered around the Makai frantically, as though she were looking for something. She was now beginning to sense a demon nearby, with low youki. Walking a bit more, Hikari saw the limp form of a cloaked demon. She ran to its side, and realized it was Hiei. Quickly, she felt for a pulse, and sighed as she found one. She grabbed the unconscious youkai, and tossed him over her shoulder.

Hiei was housed with Hikari for a few days. She claimed that she wanted him to heal before he went out again. "So…what happened to you?" Hikari asked, unable to keep her curiosity in.

"Hn…I was in a fight." Knowing that Hikari would not accept an answer like that, he continued. "I broke into Enma's vault and stole one of his precious artifacts; a very powerful sword that has the power to turn anything it touches into the lowest level of demon. A ningen named Yusuke Urameshi, Koenma's new detective, fought me for possession of the sword. I lost…" Hiei scowled and began again, "To pay for my crimes, Koenma put me on parole; I have to work with that ningen to finish up my sentence," he smirked. "I'm not the only one either. Kurama, a youko, also has the same punishment for helping me break into the vault."

"Oh, Hiei…"

Every day after that, Hikari followed Hiei to the Ningenkai. She watched over Hiei all the time, like a mother watches her child. Secretly, she would follow him on all his missions. All this time she was with him, yet she never once came into view when Hiei was with the others. It was like she wasn't there at all.

It was on a mission that Hikari learned of Hiei's sister. She watched at how determined he was about finding her. I believe that he calls her Yukina, Hikari thought. Obviously, there was something else bothering Hiei. True, he wanted to save his sister, which Hikari understood. But what was it about her captors that had Hiei so concerned?

When the mission was over, Hikari spotted Hiei talking with a kitsune. Quietly, she snuck into the building where Yukina had been held captive. Without even thinking, Hikari ran up to Hiei and asked if he was all right. She turned as she felt pairs of eyes on her. To her dismay, there were four sets. One came from the red-headed kitsune, one from a blue-haired ferry girl, another from a black-haired ningen, and the last obviously from Hiei.

"Hiei! So you finally built up the courage to bring your girlfriend here to meet us," the black-haired ningen joked. Hiei and Hikari both scowled at the remark. "I'm Yusuke." Hikari's eyes widened. Yusuke...

Hikari turned to the ferry girl and the kitsune. "I'm Botan, Yusuke's assistant. Nice to meet you, Hikari." If it was possible for Hikari's eyes to get any wider, they did. "You have a reputation up at the Reiki for being a top fighter." Hikari didn't want to hear that, she already knew how strong her powers were.

She turned to the green-eyed kitsune. "They call me Kurama, but I'm sure Hiei's already told you enough about me." Hikari nodded. She eyed the kitsune a while, before smiling warmly at him. For some reason, Hikari felt a great need to hold the kitsune. He seemed so nice.

Hiei nudged Hikari slightly, snapping her out of her daze. Then he turned to look below him. "There's Yukina," he whispered. Hikari watched the Koorime girl. She looked so content down there with the orange-haired ningen.

"That's Kuwabara; he comes off as a real jerk sometimes." Yusuke snickered. Hikari turned to leave. "Hey, where're…?"

"I don't belong here, in the Ningenkai. My place is in the Makai…with all the other cruel demons." Hiei's eyes softened the smallest bit. He was the only one who knew of Hikari's past, though he dared not share it with any of the others. Not even Kurama.

Hikari began opening the Makai portal, when she heard Kurama say: "Well, you're welcome to come back here whenever you feel the need to."

Hikari turned and smiled. "Thanks."

~*~*~*~*~

A/N Man, Hikari-chan sure does open dem Makai portals often. If you've read my other fics with Hikari, then you know what I mean. Sheesh!

Okay, but before you leave to review, I'd like to know something from anyone who is actually reading this. In my fic, I stated that Hiei's mother's name was Hina. Now, I'm not quite sure that's the actual name, but its close. As I was saying, I've heard many different tales about Hiei's past. In the English dub, Hiei says that he is Yukina's half brother because they have different mothers. But on the Net, I read on many sites that they're twins, and have the same mother and same father. Now, I don't know if this was just a FUNi mistake or what, but it sure confuses me! If you know this, then please tell me about it in your review and/or email it to me. Thanks!
