Chapter Two

"Here’s your room," Kurama said as he opened the door. Yo couldn’t have been happier. Her room had been painted dark green to match her bedspread, with mahogany molding and furniture, looking like a cozy little antique shop. Apparently his stepfather's small business had grown in the last few years more than Hanako-san had thought.

"Domo arigato, Kurama-san." It was late, and the only thing she wanted was to go to bed.

"You’re welcome, Yo-san." He seemed to want to say more, but something in the window caught his eye. "I’ll let you get to sleep. I'll see you in the morning."

"Oyasumi."

Kurama bolted down the stairs and out the door, rushing to the tree outside Yo’s window. "Hiei! Hiei, you have to get down!"

"Hn. Nani?"

"Because someone’s using that room now!"

"I hadn’t noticed," came the sarcastic answer.

"You /watched/?"

"It was difficult to miss."

Kurama shook his head. "I didn’t know you were interested in voyeurism, Hiei," he half-tease, half-admonished.

"Do you want me to rip your throat out, kitsune?" A slight flush graced the hi youkai's features.

"Hiei, just please get down."

"She’s done now."

"Just...Hiei, if she sees you..."

"She won’t. And why is she here, anyway?"

"Her foster sister is Shu-kun’s cousin. They’re attending college here with me."

"I still don’t understand why you insist on going to that torture cell."

"You don’t understand much," Kurama said more harshly than he had meant. He was exhausted, and getting Hiei away from Yo's window was going to be a monumental task, assuming that Hiei would be stubborn as always and refuse to move just because an outsider was here. "I have to go inside, so good night, Hiei."

"Hn."

"And either find another tree or don’t watch her."

"There was nothing worth seeing."

Kurama sighed and went back inside, thinking about what was happening to the Koorime twins. Yukina had hit the ice maidens’ form of puberty almost two years ago, exiting the awkward stage nearly as tall as Botan. Hiei was still in his, and would be for about another year. /That/ had been what Kurama was worried about now. He couldn’t tell Yo she had to switch rooms because a hormonally charged youkai could see her every move. Oh well, it couldn’t be helped. He doubted that Hiei would even think about a human in that way, much less want any intimate contact. Yo was safe.

"MURA!"

"What is it, Yo?" a tired yet panicked Murasaki asked as she ran into Yo’s room.

"I just saw eyes in the tree outside! Three of them!!!"

"What- Yo, it was a dream." Now her sister was ticked off and annoyed for being woken up for nothing. "Dammit, Yo, I thought someone had climbed through your window or something!"

"I’m telling you, I saw some guy with THREE eyes, red ones, staring at me!" One had been glowing, she recalled. Murasaki crossed over to the window and flung it open.

"Yo, I don’t see anyone. You were hallucinating."

"I was not!"

"Were too."

"Was not."

"Were too."

"Were too."

"Was not."

"There you go. I swear to Inari, I saw a Jaganshi!"

"Jaganshi?"

"Are you /deaf/!!!?"

"Listen to me, Yo, there are no such things as demons or Jaganshi! You’re eighteen, get those fairytales out of your mind! Now, I’m going back to bed. It’ s going to be a long day tomorrow- today, I mean."

Yo looked down to her lap, saying, "Gomen ne, Mura-chan." She was suddenly ashamed of her childish behavior. It was true that she still believed in the old stories of kitsune and Jaganshi and demons, but that didn't mean everyone else did.

"Juyo ja nai, Yo-chan. Just get some sleep."

"Oyasumi nasai, Mura."

"/Ohayo/, Yo-chan."

"Urusai, it’s only three o’ clock!" But the copper-haired girl was already on the way to her own room, chuckling.

Kurama, who had the room next to Yo’s, had heard the entire thing. ‘Hiei...you let yourself be seen?’
