Yu Yu Hakusho Fan Fiction ❯ I Dream of Demons ❯ Taking Over Me ( Chapter 1 )

[ P - Pre-Teen ]

Priestess Aishisu: Well, with the deletion of a fucking good fanfiction, I decided it was time for something new. So, I decided to entertain a little possibility that's been flitting around in my mind for a while-and that possibility is writing a Yu Yu Hakusho fanfiction. The main pairing is Kurama/Hiei. The others are undecided, though I have several ideas floating around in my head. Suggestions for pairings you might want are welcome, but I can't really promise you anything at this point.
And, just to be safe, I don't own Yu Yu Hakusho or the characters-I don't know the name of their owner. Taking Over Me belongs to Evanescence.

You don't remember me but I remember you
I
lie awake and try so hard not to think of you

Red hair brushed against a tiled counter as the young man formerly known as the legendary thief Youko Kurama splashed water onto his face, as if still trying to wake up from his nightmare.

Emerald eyes peered at a tired-looking reflection, and Kurama sighed. "Just a dream," he whispered, trying to calm himself down. He touched his rapidly beating heart and flinched as his palm touched the scar running across his chest. "A bad dream, and nothing more."

But who can decide what they dream
And
dream I do

He picked up a towel and dabbed his eyes with it, still trying with more than a little desperation to calm himself down.

It was usually hard, almost impossible in fact, to get Kurama worked up. Under regular circumstances, he was almost always calm-at times, almost eerily so.

I believe in you
I'll
give up everything just to find you

"Suichi?" his mother called. "Are you all right?"

"I'm fine!" he lied, inwardly cursing how his human mother seemed to be so attuned to his emotions. Maternal instincts, he supposed. "Just…getting ready for school!"

I have to be with you
To
live, to breathe

The dream had been unsettling the first time he had it. After having it or something similar just about every other night or so for about a month, it was becoming unbearable. He was becoming afraid to sleep, for fear that the minute he closed his eyes he would see those blood-red ones…

I'll go mad, he thought. I'll lose my wits entirely if I don't stop this right now.

You're taking over me

"Hey, you all right, Kurama?" asked Yuske Urameshi, walking over to his green-eyed friend. He didn't like showing concern for…well, just about anyone to put it simply, but his friend had been acting a little strange since…he scowled at the very memory and didn't let his mind finish the thought.

Kurama blinked, and for a moment seemed not to know if it was him being addressed to. He looked up from his book. "Huh? Oh, I…umm…"

All right, now Yuske knew something was wrong. He knew that he and of course Kuabara could sound like that sometimes, (actually a lot of the time) but Kurama? Never. Not in three centuries and then some.

Have you forgotten all I know and all we had
You
saw me mourning my love for you and touched my hand

"What is it?"

"Nothing. I've just…" he looked down again, expression sadder than Yuske had ever seen it-and that was saying something. "I've just been having some strange dreams lately."

"About…?" he prompted. Yuske didn't want to push his friend, but he was impatient by nature and also very loyal to his friends by nature.

I knew you loved me then

"Hiei. I think he's in trouble." The words were whispered so softly that no one else would have heard it but a guy whose ear was almost touching his face-and Yuske happened to fall into that category.

His fists immediately clenched at the mention of the fire demon, eyes narrowing and teeth clenching. Then the second part of Kurama's sentence seemed to reach him.

"Why should you care if he's in trouble?" the Spirit Detective demanded, still having not forgiven him for the events of the month before. "You should hate him even more than me and Kuabara should! He used you just like he did us-but even more so!"

I believe in you
I'll
give up everything just to find you

Kurama nodded sadly. He didn't need Yuske Urameshi's help to remind him of the fire demon's betrayal-the scar on his chest was reminder enough. "But…he said he was sorry," he reminded him, and Yuske snorted.

"Yeah, I'm sure he meant it," he replied cynically, eyes still narrowed. "I swear if I ever see that spiky-haired little traitor again I'll-"

Kurama deliberately stopped listening at that point. He had been having enough nightmares about Hiei getting hurt, thank you very much!

I have to be with you
To
live, to breathe

"Really, I'm fine," he said when Yuske was done. "I just…" he sighed and trailed off, looking as sad and lonely as he felt.

"Miss him?" Yuske asked, and scowled when Kurama nodded. "Don't," he suggested. "He wasn't any more your friend than he was mine."

He was more than just a 'friend' to me, Kurama thought bitterly, then tensed up when he realized that he'd just said that out loud.

You're taking over me

"I know," said Yuske with a sigh. "You two were best friends before I even knew that demons existed." The bell rang, but neither seemed to notice. "But you do realize he was never really your friend, don't you?"

"I don't know," Kurama replied, sighing as well. He gathered up his books. "I just don't know…"

I look in the mirror and see your face
If
I look deep enough

The salty sea air sprayed in his face and toyed with his hair as he walked along the cliff, neither knowing nor caring where he was going.

So many things inside that's just like you
Are taking over

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a flash of black. Glancing up, he saw a familiar shape crouched at the edge of the cliff, gazing out at the sea. He looked thin and pale, his clothes tattered and his flesh injured, but Kurama knew him well enough to know that either it really was him or he was going mad.

I believe in you
I'll
give up everything just to find you

"Hiei?" he whispered, throat feeling unbearably dry. He licked his lips and tried again, louder. "Hiei!?"

I have to be with you
To
live, to breathe

The head seemed to move, and for a moment it seemed as if he were going to turn. Just as the head moved, the wind blew Kurama's face in his air. In the moment it took for him to brush it away, Hiei was gone.

You're taking over me
