If Love Should Count You Worthy

Music by: James Mulholland

Music Cue. Flashes of frozen scenes.

1st measure: Hiei and Kurama fighting together.

2- 4: Hiei in a tree as Kurama sits at the base.

5- 7: Hiei sitting on Kurama's window sill as Kurama does some work at his desk.

8-10: Walking together.

11-13: Sitting on a park bench together.

In the last bar before the female voices enter, the scene becomes that of Hiei practicing his katana alone in the Makai in an open field.

~If love should count you worthy…~ (actions are done as words are sung)

Hiei pauses in his training as he spots a red Makai rose. He sheaths his sword and moves to pick it up, his mind wandering to Kurama.

~and should deign one day to seek your door…~

He fingers the petals lovingly, while holding the stem delicately. He sets the rose in his scarf.

~and be your guest, Pause! ~

Hiei shakes his head as if riding it of some thought. He pulls the rose out of its resting place and throws it on the ground. He fingers his neck, it is bleeding.

~ere you draw the bolt and bid him rest, ~

Hiei steps on the rose, telling himself he will not think of Kurama. That part of his life is done with now. He lives in the Makai, in the service of Mukuro, and free from the Reikai.

~If in your own content you would remain. ~

He unsheathes his sword again and resumes training.

~If love should count you worthy, ~

Hiei has finished training for the day. His eyes fall on the crushed and trampled rose. He picks it up and tucks it behind his ear. He heads back to Mukuro's palace.

~and should deign. ~ (fade out)

~For not alone he enters; In his train are angels of the mists, the lonely quest. ~

Hiei watches from a far as the remaining team members of team Urameshi fight a troop of demons. He watches as Yusuke, and Kuwabara's enemies fall. He stares lovingly at Kurama, noting the elegant way he fights. He takes in a deep breath of air as Kurama gets hit.

~Dreams of the unfulfilled and unpossessed, ~

Hiei wishes he were down there to support and protect his friend. He realizes what he is thinking and runs away.

~And sorrow and life's immemorial pain. ~

Hiei has not seen his fellow Tantei in two weeks. He passes through a beautiful field in the Makai. He pauses, looking at the immense beauty. He thinks unwittingly of Kurama.

~He wakes desires you never will forget, ~

Hiei is lying awake in his room at night. He is staring at the ceiling. He curls to lie on his side. He wishes Kurama were there to wrap his arms around him, and lull him to sleep. He wishes he could look on Kurama's face, and kiss his supple lips.

~He shows you stars you never saw before, ~

Hiei had never realized how beautiful his friend was before, and in more than the physical sense. Kurama was attractive; sure, Hiei had seen that. But Kurama also had a personality that Hiei found attractive, a personality that he admired. One that he could live with for the rest of his life.

~He makes you share with him for evermore, The burden of the world's divine regret. ~

Hiei sighs and tries to fall asleep. He cannot get Kurama out of his mind. He wishes he had never left such a perfect creature, the perfect partner.

(Music for 3 measures and 3 beats, large chords.)

It is morning. Hiei has come to the conclusion he needs not Kurama. He has lived without the fox before, he can do it now. His face is impassive.

~How wise you were to open not and yet, ~ (music builds)

Hiei lives his normal routine for the day. He eats, he trains, he patrols, and he goes to sleep.

~How poor if you should turn him from your door. ~ (the peak of the song)

Hiei dreams of Kurama.

(Two measures of soft accompaniment.)

~How wise you were to open not! ~ (soft)

Hiei looks solemn these days. It has been three days of sleepless nights because he dreamt of the fox. He looks tired, and worn. Mukuro dismisses him for the day, claiming he `needs the day off'. Hiei wanders aimlessly, and ends up in the Ningenkai.

~and yet, How poor if you should turn him from your door. ~ (gets softer, barely audible)

Hiei settles in the park he used to go to with Kurama. He sits in the same tree he sat in every time. He feels something in his scarf.

~If love should find you worthy. ~

He pulls out the battered rose.

Uh, wow, that was deep. Well, I recommend listening to the song when you read this, but I couldn't find a recording so I wrote in some of what happens in it. It not so happy now is it. Well, as usual I own nothing, but this would be a beautiful song to own. Please review!
