Chapter 1
Echoes of the Past
"Kuro!"
Yoko dodges his target, a short little imp, and slits their throat in a beautiful head twist, blood sprays onto his white tunic and his Mother's silver rose dagger. Another moved in between him and the woman killing his partner, this one is short and fat... an ogre. Yoko twirls and rams the rose dagger into his gut running it quickly upward through the chest and throat, dislodging his weapon and shoving the body aside after it hits the thick jaw bone. Then turns to the enchantress about to split open Kuronue.
The attack had come in the wee hours of the morning after a raid on a high security castle. But these attackers are not seeking revenge, their purpose is different. He got too comfortable, 3 years in one place, living with Kuronue. They had been great, happy. Now is time to pay for those.
"Let him go now and you can flee, but if your claws so much as twitch any closer to him I'll split you open. Your choice."
The enchantress hesitates for just a moment then tries to bring her claws down. Yoko grabs her and jerks her away, putting himself between her and the chimera.
"You... your eyes! They're gold!"
"Bad choice." He brings his dagger up to slit her from throat to pelvis but before he can she screams...
"Suuichi!"
He blinks. He meets the big brown eyes that he knows so well, those of his mother Shiori. He lets go of her night gown and looks at his hand to find... a hairbrush?
"Now they're green again... Suuichi are you alright?" His Mother looks worried. They are in the living room. He looks around to see Kazuya holding his stomach and looking perplexed. Suu-chan is a little farther off, rubbing his neck, wide eyed and mouth agape, but in a goofy, awed sort of way. Everyone dressed in p.j.'s.
"I... was dreaming?" Kurama's voice sounds weak to his own ears. Shori seems to relax and takes him by the shoulders.
"It seems so. You stayed here tonight because it was raining, we had dinner. It's not like you to have nightmares Suuichi... what on Earth had you so..."
"Violent?" He supplied, she didn't seem happy with the word but nodded anyway. He sighs. "Just an old memory, I apologize for the disturbance." He turns to pick up the blankets strewn on the floor and she grabs his arm, forcing him to face her. She levels a 'don't you dare try and avoid this' look and he knows she isn't about to let it drop.
"An old memory about what Suuichi? You seemed to be protecting a very close friend..." She pushes him down onto the couch and sits next to him.
"Its not..." He starts, but she cuts him off.
"Important had better not be the next word out of your mouth."
He sighs again and props his chin up on his hand. "It isn't exactly a poetic or heroic story Mother."
"I want to hear it anyway. We've had enough secrets around here don't you think?"
He looks to the floor. "The man I was protecting was my old partner Kurone. He used to help me steal things... mostly in castle raids. We had just gotten through with a high-security, high-profit attack that night. We lost the search teams and decided to make camp to recover instead of heading for the safety of my closest den. Both of us were exhausted, mentally and physically. Kuro had gotten himself beat to a pulp as usual and I had a pounding headache from breaking too many seals. Both of our ears were bleeding from a squealer alarm that Kuro had tripped. Deciding to camp that way is one of the worst decisions I have ever made... and Kuro paid for it.
Between our exhaustion, bleeding ears, and the overwhelming smell of Kuro's blood... there just wasn't anyway we could have noticed their approach. A group of hunters got the spring on us; three of them sent by an old enemy of mine. I was awake the moment the imp stepped into my secondary zone and managed to call out to Kuro before the enchantress could slit his throat.
I reciprocated the dirty move on the imp to prove my point. The ogre blocked my path to Kuro and the enchantress, they figured if they could kill off one of us, they could double team the other. He was too stupid to realize that my Mother's rose daggers could easily penetrate his thick skin... he didn't even bother to block. The enchantress was about to split Kuro open... no way I could close the distance in time. I distracted her with a phony option for just long enough to get close, she didn't realize the trick in time.
I picked Kuro up and carried him all the way to my nearest den. Took me three days even at half speed, between Kuro's weight and my wounded leg I couldn't go full speed. He kept telling me to just leave him the entire time, drowsy and dizzy from blood loss. When we got to the den... I had supplies and time needed to properly treat both him and myself; then proceeded to pass out for a week. Kuro swore he thought I was never going to wake up... he always did recover faster than me. We lost half our profit and almost our lives over my cocky decision; yet he never blamed me once."
Shiori's eyes shine with unshorn tears. "He sounds like a very good friend Suuichi."
Kurama's voice is calm, but chilling. "He... was." She doesn't press him any farther.

Rain, how Hiei despises the rain. He can smell it in the air though, damn Ningenkai. He runs quickly along the rooftops and slips into the Fox's room just before the downpour begins. The Fox always leaves the window open for him. So where exactly is the Fox?
That's when Hiei remembers the Fox said he would be having dinner with his ningen family tonight. They were all going to meet up at the temple tomorrow. Something about a powerful demon that had managed to slip through to the Ningenkai from Reikai without permission. As border patrol Hiei was involved, Kurama had opted to help set up a search grid, even the detective and the oaf were going to be there. But since the Fox didn't want to leave his family vulnerable, he was taking them along. Somewhere along the way it had been turned into a party, and Hiei was reluctant, understandably so, to join. Too bad the Fox really hadn't given him a choice, stating that the temple, and thus Yukina might be the demon's target. The point of the dinner tonight merely to ask his family to join him for the party at the temple tomorrow.
Hiei settles into making something to eat, keeping himself occupied until the Fox returns. Of course it doesn't take him very long to cook and eat. Leaving a very bored fire demon caged in a small ningen apartment. Never a very good combination, and one that would have interesting results in this particular instance.
Hiei decides to get in some sword practice. He draws his blade and the enemy appears before him, an image restricted to his own mind of course. He jumps, spins, parries, and doges according to one of his prearranged training courses. The trick is of course to adapt his combos to any environment...
A ningen apartment does not make for very good training grounds.
One misstep and Hiei is sent flying into one of the Fox's shelves. It teeters precariously and Hiei braces it quickly, not quickly enough however to save a box that falls off the shelf and slides across the floor. If he was lucky maybe nothing had broken... it didn't sound like anything had broken... Hiei goes to pick it up and put it back, unfortunately he doesn't realize it is now upside down and everything falls out, scattering across the floor. He curses silently at his own carelessness. Just a bunch of papers and...
a pendant?
Hiei looks it over and asses it. It isn't anything the Fox has ever mentioned... it doesn't look terribly powerful... there seems to be a strange sort of energy to it... but nothing of exceptional notice. Why would the Fox keep it? He usually leaves all of his stolen treasures in Makai or Reikai. So what is so special about this one, that the Fox would deign to keep it so close to his person? Hiei looks at the papers, as if they would provide an answer.
Letters... he realizes. Every last one of them are letters, written in the Fox's neat, flowing script... but not in Ningen. No, they are written in an older demonic tongue. As he reaches for one to get a better look a little alarm bell goes off in his head. The Fox is a very private person... he wouldn't want Hiei snooping through his things, and Hiei isn't one to snoop. No if Hiei wants to know something he usually asks straight up, and if they don't want to tell him, he beats it out of them.
But he can't beat on the Fox, and he seriously doubts the Fox will tell him. Just something about the letters seem private. But this isn't Hiei's business. He starts to put them away until one phrase catches his eye... Hiei's heart clenches...
... I love you. In your own weird way. We both know though, that I can never have you.
... I love you.
... I love you.
... I love you.
The Fox in love? He has never shown interest in anyone before. Hiei finds himself cursing whatever pathetic oona that had managed to bewitch his partner. Kurama incapable of optaining her? What nonsense is that? He remembers how all those ningen girls fawn over the red-headed Suuichi. Yoko is revered as well, having thousands of suitors over the years. Hiei gives up trying to put them away he starts to read.
Dearest Kuronue...
***
Kurama makes it home early, intending to change then locate Hiei before heading to the temple. He senses his friend long before entering the apartment. Hiei is drowsing on the sofa and is on his feet the moment the door clicks shut softly.
"Good morning Hiei. Did you sleep well?" The Fire demon seems... off in a way.
"Hn." Is the only reply that Kurama receives before his now surly partner turns to look out the window. Kurama will have to ask him what is bothering him after the party, there simply isn't time now. He smiles bright and goes upstairs to change. His shower is quick, dressing in his tunic even quicker. He does his hair, carefully tucking away the seeds and leaves then heads back downstairs. He takes a peek at Hiei before slipping his hand into the box on top of the shelf. He pulls out the maroon pendant and tucks it away in his clothing.
He should be depressed today, the anniversary of something terrible. That is probably the reason for his dream last night. And the month or so previous to that.
But Hiei's presence seems to lighten his mood. He checks once more, Hiei hasn't moved, so chances of him having seen the pendant are slim. Kurama smiles again.
"We should be going Hiei." Hiei pushes away from the wall, if possible, in an even worse mood.

A/N: Here it is guys... at long last, the first chapter of Inheritance! I hope you all are in for quite a long run. This one is going to be complex, but easier to understand than the previous two. I will of course be giving my end of chapter explanations per usual.
Kuronue is a character brought up in the second movie. Not much is said about him... but I really couldn't resist what was brought up. He used to steal things with Yoko and they seem to be good friends. Kurama regrets his death, killed during the course of a theft, over his pendant. I really wanted to explore that relationship... so I did!
BTW, this is the last sequel. But I have started concocting a new series.
