Chapter 8
Makatashi

The man takes a few steps toward Kurama and Kuronue shouts out as best he can. "Dammit run! All of you!" The blood leaks from his mouth as the non fighters of the group get back. Hiei's hand makes it to the hilt of his sword and Yusuke powers up, Kurama hasn't moved.

The man sighs, he looks... disappointed? "No. You are undecided about your actions now aren't you? Pity. I guess it can't be helped, I'll have to give you some options to help you decide. Since you have so clearly forgotten the rules I laid down for you, you shall have to be punished as well. Let's start with a review shall we?"

Kurama's position moves, he's slips onto the balls of his feet and runs his hands through his hair, bringing them behind his back. His eyes don't leave the man. "Makatashi, I will leave now and never return if you promise to spare them... we both know how a fight between us at this point would end. There is no point to it currently." There is a gasp from the back, Shiori. Makatashi's eyes flicker to her for a moment, then he sneers.

"That might have been all well and good if you hadn't broken the rules little kit. So tell me? Which one of them should I kill? Your Mother? The boy? Or how about the fool that's followed you around for so many years?"

Kurama grits his teeth. "Stop! If you want me..."

Makatashi cuts him off with a laugh. "Don't be ridiculous! You wouldn't stand a chance as you are now, undecided and undetermined. I at least want a good fight before I kill you. So let's start where I wanted to ne? A review of the rules you have so carelessly broken.

You are no longer your own master, I own you. As such, your life is about to change. Since you belong to me, I expect you to be better than the rest of those fools that walk these realms." Kurama grits his teeth, it is impossible for him to forget the speech that is forever burned into his memory.

"For you, family and friends are no longer existent. If you show caring for others, it is to manipulate them for your own purposes later.

Trust no one.

Take what you need, take what you want.

Care only for yourself.

Your mind is your best weapon, cultivate it.

Never stay in one place too long. You no longer have a home.

I will kill you one day, your goal is to give me a good fight. I will use everything I can against you. This day will be of your choosing, the day you stop running and fight; so long as you run, you live.

Happiness is a dream that you will never obtain, you might as well forget about it.

You've disobeyed my rules little kit. But I'll give you an option: if you can fight me, right now, with everything you have, I will leave them alone. If you choose to run, I get to kill one of them. If you fail to fight your best, I get to kill one of them."

Kurama nods, "You already know my answer. You wouldn't have forced me to become a demon if you thought I would run." Makatashi grins.

"My clever little kit... have you finally grown into a man?"

When he speaks again. Kurama has moved to his deadliest tone. "Hiei, please take care of Mother for me. I know I have no right to ask, but please."

Hiei's expression changes into one of shock, "Fox..." But the fight begins in a explosive way. Kurama sets off a volley of smoke bombs shielding everything from view. The entire temple is filled with it. Strange sounds can be heard from every direction. Some familiar, some totally foreign. Yusuke and Hiei recognize the scent of some of Kurama's most leathal 'pets'. Even the humans know the crack of his rose whip... they'd never seen him use them in combination. None could get a good fix as to what is going on.

A surge of energy clears the smoke from the temple maybe seven minutes after the start. It looks like a plant graveyard. Petals, seared mulch, bark, stumps, and crushed leaves are everywhere. Makatashi has only a few gashes that heal over completely as they watch. He has Kurama off the ground, one hand twisted in bright red hair, burning every plant that dares to peak out, the other wrapped tightly around that thin delicate neck. Kurama is raking his nails over the hand that holds him furiously, he's close to blacking out.

Hiei moves first, drawing his sword and charging in one movement. Makatashi's cold eyes snap to him and he's blown back and thrown into a wall by a fierce wave of energy.

"No interference!"

Kurama gasps out. "Do not engage him!"

Yusuke has had enough. "Like hell Fox-boy!" He points his finger directly at the man only to find in the next moment that his wrist has been broken. Fox-boy is on the ground gasping for air, Makatashi is glaring at him, holding his arm in a position to break it.

"I believe I told you not to interfere." As the man snaps his arm, Yusuke unleashes a hellish blast of energy to the man's chest with his other arm.

Makatashi flies back as Yusuke cries out in pain. Everyone cheers, except Kurama.

He's drawing seeds and already growing them. "I told you not to engage him!" A hiss, a command from their normally completely gentle friend. Soon they know why. There... in the entryway, the dust from Yusuke's blast is settling. The bastard stands, the gaping hole in his chest sealing up. Kurama's assault reaches him. The plants are blasted aside and he advances on Kurama once more. Kurama's battered body tries to rain blows down on the man, and although every hit he throws connects the beast before him doesn't even flinch. Rather he grabs Kurama once more. The clean breaks ring through the air as he breaks first the right arm, then the left... Hiei dashes forward but his sword only connects with a solid barrier that he quickly proceeds to try and tear down. Yusuke looks one in shock as Kurama's right and left legs are snapped as well. This... isn't... possible.

Kurama's lungs stain for air, between his bruised windpipe and broken ribs, it is next to impossible for him to get enough air. That bastard is having fun, dangling him by the hair. But Kurama bites his lip til it bleeds. He will not give the man the cries of pain he wants to hear. Kurama knows it is useless for his friends to try and break the barrier, but he hears the blows they land and it comforts him. He'd missed what Yusuke had screamed, Kuwabara's sword spit the barrier but it reformed before anyone could get through, even Hiei. It shudders under the force they exert, even the rest of the gang joining in with whatever they could. Oars, bats, weakened spirit guns of the elderly, even bare fists, beat on the wall between them and him. Whatever weapons could be grabbed from the temple walls were put to good use. A warmth ran deep in his blood, giving him comfort beyond belief in what he knows are his final moments. They are all fighting so hard for him. His friends... no...

... his family.

He's found a family at last. Now he must part from them, to protect them. His face is calm, impassive. he waits for it to begin. He knows what is to come. He'll be forced into his fox form and the fur will be slowly separated from his body. Then the useless bastard flunkies will beat his remains to death. Slow, painful torture, that he's known to be his end for centuries.

"Prepared for death so soon? I don't think so. You broke our agreement little kit. I wanted everything you have, this isn't even close to your best."

Kurama's whole body freezes up at that statement. He stutters out. "I don't have anything left!"

And it's true, he can't move, his plants are all destroyed, along with any in the area that he can access. Even if he did have a plant to access, he couldn't even grow moss at this point - even with his life energy. No energy, no plants, no movement... he couldn't even headbutt the bastard.

"That's not the point. You could have done better, I expected better. Your mind is your strongest tool remember? You didn't use it enough, you wasted energy, you didn't even hit me with your best attacks."

And Kurama knows he's right, his best attacks would have killed everyone in the area. Shit.

"You have one week before I return kit. You can recover and run or stay to fight. But now I will kill one person close to you."

"NO!" Kuramma hollers, ignoring the pain he tries to hit Makatashi. It fails miserably. Kurama face and chest are forced up against the stone of the temple, his broken arm twisted behind him. Searing pain is damn near enough to break him, tears prick into the corners of his eyes. His pride is viciously ripped from him as Makatashi pets his hair.

"It's ok little kit. I guess I just expected a little too much from you. I'll make everything better. We'll just kill off that brat that thinks of you as his father alright? Not so bad. Go ahead and run, I'll even let you pick if you want to go with Hiei or Kuronue. There now."

Hatred burns right to Kurama's core. "Leave Shura out of this!"

"You are the one that brought him in. You broke the rules. I told you not to care for anyone but yourself. But no... you just didn't want to listen. How very selfish, maybe there is hope for your corruption yet. You could have made them hate you, you could have told them truth. Especially with the appearance of my clone, Karasu. I gave you fair warning of my knowledge of your misbehavior, and yet you continued. You could have told them what frightened you so much about him, you could have told them about me. But you didn't. I think you've forgotten that I own you! This new body does not relinquish that fact. Perhaps you need to be reminded of that as well. Fine then, so be it. You have one week, if you are still here, another one will die if you don't fight me seriously." He places his hand on Kurama's back.

"One week. Enjoy your memories." The sizzle of skin can be heard above everything else until Kurama finally breaks and screams out in pain. It echos through the temple. Slowly their friend falls to the ground and Makatashi walks out. Kurama's body convulses but it is a few minutes before the barrier falls. Hiei reaches him first.

"Fox!" He flips his friend over to find blank eyes, Kurama's mind is not with them. His body is convulsing from whatever is playing before his eyes, only Kuronue knows what it is.

Until Koenma steps forward.

Yoko rolls over in the cave. His home. He had heard something, whispering. He sits up to see Ryat and Rika struggling in the entrance. They aren't supposed to be that close to the outside. Outside is dangerous... Mommy says so.

His five-year-old legs carry his swiftly and quietly to his siblings. He hears Rika first.

"It's to dangerous! You'll break the barrier!"

Ryat finally manages to shove her off. "I can't stay in here anymore! Kitsune are meant to run free!"

Yoko tugs on his eldest brothers pants. "But Rye... Mommy said..."

Ryat's eyes soften toward him, the others were starting to stir as well. "Shhh, Yoko. It's alright, go back to sleep ok?" Yoko nods and turns to go back to bed when his brother makes a break for it. He sees a white blur... their Mother flash after him. But she isn't fast enough... the barrier shatters as Ryat collides with it. Fresh air fills the cave for the first time in over five years. The men hear it and move in, the moment they'd waited for.

"RUN!" His Mother's voice screams. Yoko sees the flash of her silver rose daggers, blood. Lots of blood, it flies from her vicious strokes and splatters over the walls. It is the same color as Rika's beautiful red roses. Behind him, Anji and Reamy whimper. Men approach, they grab him and his sisters.

"Kill the girls first... quickly. We don't want anymore vixen's running around!" His heart stops. Blood, red like Rika's roses seeps into the white dresses of his sisters, their screams ring in his ears. "Now the boy!" But it didn't happen. He sees red again, but not the red he expected. Rika.

"YOKO!" she screams as her whips splits the man holding him in two. She grabs him ans runs through the fight, through the entrance. Her long legs move quickly pumping up and down with speed that Yoko could never reach as small as he is. He curls into the protective embrace of his oldest sister.

Blood and fighting. Yoko hates both. Ryat teases him for it, telling him that real men don't tend plants, they burn things from their path. Ryat is like their father... that's what Mommy says.

Ryat is dead.

Anji is dead.

Reamy is dead.

Yoko cries as they tumble to the ground... trap. Rika's leg is mangled. Yoko knows...

...Rika is dead too.

"Run Yoko... run..."

So he does, but his little legs are no match. They corner him soon, he backs away, pressing into the bark of the tree. The tree brushes against his spirit to comfort him, he cries out the pain in his young souls to it, about his siblings and how he knows the men will kill him too. They are advancing slowly, their knives and swords reflect the light of the moon and Yoko closes his eyes, he doesn't want to see the red seep from himself. But their cries force his eyes open once more. He feels the draw on his energy... his emotions. The tree lashes out, killing them. The rd isn't so frightening this time. The tree protected him, just like Rika's roses. Blood can be good.

The tree is felled and he is grabbed. Strangely they don't beat him to death, they drag him along.

Back to the cave, the area in front of it. Mother's Rose daggers flash and dip, red everywhere. Mommy is covered in it. There he is, the strange man with the long black hair and the cold voice. "Give in Sakura or your precious baby dies."

He watches as the seven beautiful daggers drop. They do things to Mommy. Mean things as she screams in pain. Her skin should be on her...

That evil man ties her beautiful silver fur around his shoulders and advances on Yoko. He grins, and Yoko knows he is evil.

Happiness is a dream that you will never obtain, you might as well forget about it."

The man burns his back, and Yoko knows it will scar, his own screams can't seem to reach his ears. They hurt him, he can't move his arms. He can't move his legs. They are dragging him. He hears water. It sounds like the river that runs through the cave but... it's bigger.

The last thing he sees is that man.

He sinks into the freezing water with that image and the words burned into his brain. He is swept away, down into the bottom. Weeds brush against him just as his chest constricts and really starts to burn. The ice water of that river has replaced his blood now and he knows he is as cold as that man's voice.

Happiness is a dream that you will never obtain...

A/N: Well the interwebs is still out. I think my stress levels have doubled because of it.

So there he is, Makatashi. The ultimate bad guy of this little tale. Of course little may not be the right word. He sadistic and bears a serious grudge. Yes he believes he owns Kurama. No Kurama is not the last kitsune or whatever. He's just the last person in his family.

Rika and Ryat were several years older than the rest of them. Foxes are known to have small multiples, I applied this idea to kitsune. I really haven't covered that whole past yet. There is quite a bit more to it. you'll learn as we go.

The second section is a flash back if you will. Makatashi forced Kurama to relive what is quite possibly the worst night of his life. Yes that really did happen, the softened nature is due to the fact that Kurama was only 5 at the time.

I hope you enjoyed.
