Chapter 15
New Perspectives
Yukina, is for once, the first up in the morning. Master Genkai had always risen early. The ice maiden feels herself close to tears again at that thought, but Kazuma had tried so hard to stop her from crying yesterday. She doesn't want to make him feel bad again. She'd practiced for years how not to cry, she won't do so now.
The morning chores fly by a little too fast and before she knows it, they are complete. Everyone else is starting to stir, except Hiei, when had he left? She leaves the tea to boil and goes to rouse her father. The man loved to sleep in. He said that the blankets of the temple were the softest he'd ever felt. Really, they weren't all that high quality but... but with what he was used to... She feels tears prick at her eyse again and viciously staves them back.
She will not cry.
She taps on his door before she enters. A simple warning. He'd lived to many years in harsh conditions, she knew he was probably awake the moment she came within ten feet of his door. Which is why they had placed him in the very back of temple where he wouldn't be disturbed, by early morning wandering and chores. The warning is a friendly gesture, and a respectful one, just in case his brain is still a little groggy. The last thing he would ever want would be to hurt her.
He's pretending to still be asleep when she enters the room on quiet feet. She knows his breathing has quickened to beyond that of sleep and his position has changed so that he is in a better form to attack. The motion is completely unconscious, and probably happened as she approached. He knows she is here, who she is, and what she is here for, but for some reason, he insists every morning to have her wake him.
Yukina doesn't mind though. She kneels down next to him and extends a hand, reaching for his shoulder. "Good morning Fath-"
He grabs her arm and pulls her over him and suddenly her back is to his chest and they are nestled comfortably under the blankets. She giggles and he chuckles. It is warm and comfortable, and safe. She knows why her Mother loves her Father, he is what the kooromie deny exist. He is a good man. He tries to make his voice sound sleepy, it might have worked if Yukina didn't know better.
"It's to early snowflake. Let's go back to sleep." She giggles again.
"Father, everyone else is getting up."
"What's that got to do with anything?"
She giggles again. She knows what he wants her to say. "Please Daddy? Get up for me?"
He laughs and uncovers them. "Alright snowflake, I can face the day for you."

Kurama still hasn't returned to the temple. In all honesty no one had expected him to. He has gone through too much in too short a time period. Makatashi would be back tomorrow. Kurama would be back by tomorrow. If Yusuke has anything to say about it, Makatashi wouldn't live through this. The bastard is going die for all the people he's hurt and killed and...
... and he really doesn't want to think about her right now.
Best to focus on Kurama. Yeah, that bastard wrecked Kurama's whole family, hunted Fox-boy his entire life! No way he was gonna get away with that! Kurama will tear him to shreds! Yet... it has been Kurama on the loosing end these past two fights; Kurama pinned to the wall giving into death. But Kurama is different now isn't he? That look in his eye when he said he would kill Makatashi... not a mask but true emptiness. That look scared the shit out of Yusuke; who hadn't been scared of it? Plus Kurama has his Mom backing him now... scratch that, both his Mom's backing him. He has those daggers and that sword and now he even has armor... or at least Koenma said that the fur is better than armor. Another good thing is that Makatashi can't predict everything Kurama is gonna do anymore. Yusuke may not have known Kuroune very well but he had to admire what the guy did. Killing himself to save Kurama... Yusuke feels like he owes the guy somehow, even if that isn't very logical. He's been in that position though. When he knew he had to die so that Kurama and Hiei and Kuwabara could tap their potential. He even had died. The difference being, he came back - Kuroune wouldn't.
So they are left to think again. Yusuke's most detestable task.
... maybe he can convince Kuwabara to spar with him.
***
Hiei didn't waste time like the others this morning. Why would he? Damn foolish human always mulling about and side stepping things that are important to do things that are completely unimportant! Facts are facts. His Fox is being targeted which means they need to keep a close eye on him. Now that Kurama isn't likely to kill them for getting to close.
It isn't all that difficult to to find him. Hiei can always find the Fox easily. Something about that bothers him but he'll put thought to it later. Right now he needs to figure out what the hell the kitsune is doing!? he's just repeating the same movements over and over and over... is this some sort of training?
No, a reenactment. He is reenacting his fights with Makatashi. Perhaps to come up with a new battle plan, or figure out flaws in his last plans. This is part of what drew Hiei to Kurama in the first place. His strategies are excellent. He learns from past mistakes and can defeat an opponent quicker and more efficiently with each battle, presuming his victim lives through the fight in the first place. Hiei isn't at all sure that he would be able to defeat the Fox in a fair fight anymore. Hiei has always lived by hiding and running and avoiding anything that might hurt him. Kurama on the other hand lives in the thick of it, ever changing to the circumstances around him.
If Hiei were to try such a thing, he's sure he would drown.
That's ok though. Hiei can watch from the sidelines. Let Kurama be the center of attention and dazzle everyone, while they are all looking at the red head he can slit their throats from behind. In fact, it is one of their best battle strategies. For some reason Kurama is the only one that sees him when he slips through the shadows. Then again, Hiei is the only one Kurama let through his masks, even if he didn't have a say in it.
But the masks were no longer a constant thing. Hiei is more than a little curious as to how Kurama will deal with that. But the wily fox is sure to master some other pattern or technique to help him; not just with his emotions but with his upcoming fight as well. Funny really, that the particular thought should pass through Hiei's mind as Kurama made the laws of gravity and physics bend to his will suddenly.
Hiei doesn't quite know what to think of that.
***
As Kurama finishes, he feels relief? Maybe. His is the world that is tilting now. Too much energy had been used. But that ok, he understands now. He had never understood before when his Mother told him that battle was a matter of perspective. He always thought she had meant one needed to take the thoughts and goals of the opponent into consideration if you want the upper hand. These things, of course, being necessary.
But that was not what she had meant. Clever vixen that she was had embedded two lessons into one. Because one also must keep their own objective in the forefront of their own mind, and all the emotions that are attached to it. Some motivations are more effective than others, and it is often what those fighting are fighting for that determines the battle more than strength alone.
Yusuke is a living, breathing, example of this.
What Kurama needs is to find the inspiration that is necessary to defeat Makatashi. That way he will not use so much energy while fighting. He found his previous motivation to be lacking, however noble it may be. Then again, noble was never a trait he put very high praise on. Unfortunately he is running out of time and options, his body is running out of energy. He fumbles his next step back toward the temple and knows he will not make it. Too many hours of training. The sunset on the horizon spin before his eyes.
Just as he is about to hit the ground, he glimpses his inspiration, and can't think of any better.

A/N: Woot for having my internet back.
Just a pause chapter to reflect on things that hake been going on. It's a bit slow paced and short but kind of refreshing. I like it.
Double entendres, not the bad kind get your mind out of the gutter, abound here. You probably didn't catch them all. That's ok.
Well... one or two might be dirty.
I'm going to stop talking now.
