Chapter Three: Make Somebody Happy (Hiei)
It has been a year since that day you watched Kenji go. You had stood there, even after Kenji disappeared, for a few hours, remembering all you had gone through with Kenji and hoping you did the right thing. You hoped he was making somebody happy right now. Every night you slept in trees and every day you traveled to a new area. You had wandered from Kyoto Japan and became a Rurouni. You were traveling with no destination. You had become rather thin but you made sure you didn't get too skinny by stealing as much food as you could without getting noticed. No one ever did catch you, and as far as you know there were no reported thefts.
Now you were sitting in a tree, fingering you locket that had the picture of you and your little brother in it. `Exactly a year.' You thought. `I wonder what Kenji's doing. Does he remember me? Is he making his new family happy? Is he in a loving home?' You let your thoughts wander for a few minutes before snapping back to reality. You were making your way to Tokyo. You didn't have a reason, but you've always wanted to see it, so why not? You climbed out of the tree and made sure you had everything in your backpack. You hadn't grown at all in one year and you didn't need new clothes. You were usually able to look innocent and pretend that you had forgotten your change and get some sympathy from an elderly lady or something, so you didn't smell all of the time.
After making sure you had everything, you zipped your bag and headed for Tokyo. This was going to be interesting.
(((A Few Days Later)))
You had found Tokyo and you were looking around. You didn't grab any attention by passerby as you looked like a regular teenager wandering the streets. You were glad for this and saw a food store. You heard your stomach rumble and you frowned. Guess you had to shoplift again. You walked into the store and made sure there were no security cameras or special alarms for shoplifters. After convincing yourself there was none, you got a pre-made sandwich and casually put it in your front pocket and pretended like you didn't see anything interesting. Shrugging and grumbling about how you couldn't find anything you liked, you left the store, undetected. You stopped grumbling and broke into a relieved smile. You knew one of these days you were going to get caught…but you needed to eat.
Walking away from the store you walked for a little bit before you saw a rather large school building. You looked at the name and shrugged. `Meiou High', nothing too interesting about that. You took out your sandwich and started to eat it, feeling rather hungry. You heard the bell ring and saw students exiting from the building. You frowned and leaned against the wall, hiding in the shadows. You didn't feel like getting surrounded by giggling schoolgirls. You observed some of the guys and shrugged. Nothing special.
Then you saw a guy with beautiful long red hair and strikingly handsome emerald-eyes. The color of his eyes reminded you of your brother. Shaking your head, you decided to keep touring the area. He wasn't that great, he only reminded you of your brother.
(((Hours Later)))
You were surrounded by apartment buildings. You would love to sleep in a bed again but you didn't have any money to buy a hotel room. You saw a door to the apartment ahead of you open and saw three figures emerging from it. One was a rather tall girl with light brown hair and brown eyes, the second being a not as tall but still pretty tall boy about your age, 15, with small eyes and curly orange-hair that seemed styled at the top of his head. The third was…
You rubbed your eyes and looked at the third person. It couldn't be…yet it was. Kenji. You ran into the alley next to you and quietly observed the three.
"Onee-chan, can we go to the park?" You sighed in sadness. He used to call you Onee-chan. The tall girl, you guessed she was around nineteen or twenty, nodded and Kenji jumped for joy.
"Just as long as you behave." She made sure of that and Kenji shrugged.
"YAY! (Your name)-chan used to take me to the park all of the time!" You smiled a little. He did remember you. You just wished he still called you Onee-chan like he used to. At least he got `chan' in, right? You noticed they were heading your way and you ran back into the alley, not wanting to intrude upon your brother's life. As soon as they passed you and started to follow them, making sure to stay a good distance behind them but still within the hearing range.
"Shizuru, I have weird feeling that we're being followed." The tall guy about your age made sure that Kenji couldn't hear and the tall girl, you guessed was Shizuru, nodded.
"Kazuma, let's keep a close eye on Kenji." Shizuru suggested and her eyes locked on the five year old boy. The boy, Kazuma agreed, transferring his gaze to Kenji as well. You wondered how they could tell somebody was following them, and hoped they hadn't seen you yet. You saw the park approach ahead of you and you turned to a different entrance that Kazuma and Shizuru weren't entering through. It was less crowded so it would be easier to spot you. As soon as you reached the entrance you bolted for the trees. You were fast for somebody so small, and some had even said you weren't human, but you shrugged it off. You just guessed it was from wandering all of the time.
You stopped at a tree and climbed it with ease, then started to jump from tree to tree as quietly as you could so you wouldn't be detected. You stopped when you saw Kazuma, Kenji, and Shizuru in a clearing in the park. You sat in the tree and watched them for a while, not noticing that somebody was in turn watching you.
After a while, you noticed Kazuma was gone and you frowned. Shouldn't he stay with Kenji? Shrugging, you watched as Shizuru grew a little tense and Kenji still looked like the same happy self he always was. Suddenly, Shizuru grabbed Kenji's hand and started walking to another part of the forest. "Kenji, let's find a new place, don't want to keep other people from it, after all." You stood up on your branch and prepared to leap off when suddenly you felt a hand push you from behind. You fell from the tree but managed to land on your feet, stumbling a little.
"What the…" You said as you regained your balance and saw two people. One was Kazuma and the other was a guy who was pretty short, well, except for the fact that he was taller than you by an inch or so. He had spiked-up gravity defying black hair that had a white starburst towards the front and crimson eyes.
"Why are you following us?" Kazuma asked and you paled. `Oh shit, I bet this guys strong…' You thought in your head.
"Umm…" You racked your brain for an answer.
"Baka onna, just answer the question." The crimson-eyed figure said shortly and you gulped. Kazuma glared at the short figure for a second.
"I can handle this on my own Hiei!" Kazuma shouted and the short figure, Hiei, gave a slight `Hn.'
"Obviously not. I had to point out to you exactly where she was." Kazuma glared at Hiei and you were starting to wonder about those two. "Onna, why were following the baka and his siblings?" Hiei turned his cold gaze to you. You shrugged, finally deciding to go with a smart-ass answer.
"Because I felt like it." You shrugged, hoping they wouldn't persist; yet knowing they would. Honestly, who fell for that damn answer? You shook your head mentally and continued to try and look nonchalant.
"Hey, you look familiar…do I know you?" Kazuma asked your heart stopped for a moment. "You look a lot like Kenji, except for the hair and eyes (unless you actually do have black hair and green eyes…then forget it).
"Must be a coincidence." You shrugged. "Honestly, there are six-billion people in the world, wouldn't a few people look alike?"
"I guess, but I still don't get why you followed us." Hiei glared at Kazuma.
"Let me handle this." He demanded and made sure Kazuma didn't get a say in that. "Onna, your following them and `just because you felt like it' isn't a good answer."
"I don't see why I should tell you." You glared at Hiei and suddenly he was behind you, holding a katana at your throat. Kazuma gave a shout of protest.
"Hiei! That's a GIRL! You're not supposed to threaten them!" Kazuma shouted and Hiei didn't seem to hear him.
"Onna, tell me why you following the baka and maybe I'll let you live." Hiei growled and you nodded slightly.
"I have something that might explain it…" You said, reaching for your locket. Hiei watched your hand, looking ready to chop it off if you got a gun or other type of weapon. You felt the edges of the two pendants around your neck and grabbed the one that felt like the one that held the picture of you and your brother in it. Sighing, you held it up, not opening it. "Can you let me get the chain off?"
Hiei obliged and removed his katana, only long enough for you to unhook the chain before putting the katana back up against your throat. "That locket looks familiar too…" Kazuma mumbled and you smiled sadly, opening it. Kazuma took a look at the pictures and gave a slight shout. "You're…(Your name)." You nodded slightly. "Hiei, let (Your name) go. She's not going to harm us." Hiei grumbled but sheathed his katana.
"Who exactly are you?" Hiei asked and you looked at the locket sadly.
"I'm (Your name), Kenji's Onee-chan. Guess you heard about me." You looked at Kazuma.
"Kenji won't stop talking about you. Everyone assumed you were dead." Kazuma said and you nodded.
"I wanted them to assume I was dead. I also assume all Kenji said about where I went was `I was an angel'." Kazuma nodded.
"Yeah." Kazuma said in understanding. Hiei, though he tried not to show it, was confused.
"What's going on here?" He asked with his same cold tone. You shrugged your shoulders.
"Basically…" You told him a brief account of who you were and what happened a year ago. Of course, you made sure it was brief, not wanting to go through every excruciating detail.
`That wasn't a very good explanation you know.' You're conscious said and you mentally shrugged.
`Oh yeah, let me go through every detail only to burst into tears. Good plan! Not.' You grumbled inside your head.
`Whatever.' Your conscious said and you forgot about it.
"Uh…how long have you been following us?" Kazuma asked.
"Ever since you left the house. I just arrived in Tokyo today. Nice city by the way. A lot of street kids and it's pretty easy to shoplift…" You trailed off, shaking your head. "Anyway, I'm going to go now." You said, starting to walk away.
"Uhh…(Your name)…don't you want to see Kenji?" Kazuma asked.
"I've seen him." You continued to walk. "I'll stick around Tokyo for a little bit, then I'm probably going to wander again. See ya." You waved.
"HEY WAIT!" Kazuma shouted. You turned around. "Uh, I forgot. That's Hiei and I'm Kazuma Kuwabara. Most people just call me Kuwabara though." You shrugged.
"Whatever. Please don't tell Kenji…I don't want his hopes to get to high." You said, and continued walking.
