Laughter. Children laughed. It drifted on the wind and floated passed all the people sitting, playing, and walking through the park. It filled the hearing of a young man, sitting in the highest branch of a tall tree. He was pale, clothed all in black. A bandana adorned his forehead, a white scarf around his thin neck. Bandages, discolored by age, clung to his right arm, covering a black dragon that wrapped its way around.
Bright, ruby red eyes opened as another laugh joined the others below. He moved to look downwards, wind catching his black spikes, white starburst catching sun. Hiei Jaganshi looked below, seeing no one that could have produced the sound that had awoken him. Shaking his head momentarily at the ground, he cast his gaze upward. Clouds were beginning to overtake the once blue sky.
Rain… he thought, I hate rain… A drop fell, Hiei stood. More fell, he flitted away. He was a black blur to those who now began to hide from the rain. He landed in a tree, tapped on the window, and was let in.
As Hiei woke in his tree, a young, pale girl stood near the entrance. She was short, no taller then Hiei, sea green hair pulled back and held by a red tie, blowing now in wind that would soon turn violent. Cherry eyes gazed happily at a taller (sometime moronic) boy. She laughed.
“Thank you, Kazuma-kun,” she laughed. Kazuma Kuwabara laughed as well, running fingers through his orange hair. Does he say these things to everyone?
“Your welcome, Yukina-chan. I could go with you back to the temple,” he asked hopefully.
“No, I'll be fine, Kazuma-kun. You should go home before this weather starts up.” Yukina gestured to the sky.
“Yukina-chan, it's going to rain. It would be better if you came with me, so you don't get caught in the rain.” Yukina shook her head.
“I can't impose on you. I'll be fine. I don't want you to get wet.”
“If I can't change your mind…..”
“I'll be fine Kazuma-kun. I don't want you stuck in the rain when it starts.” Nodding, Kuwabara walked, reluctantly, away and towards his home, casting a glance behind him to make sure Yukina was still set on going alone. She waved.
As good as Yukina's parting with Kuwabara went; Hiei's staying with Kurama as the rain fell was working on his nerves.
“She asked again.” Hiei looked from the window to his red haired companion.
“She asked what, Fox?” He already knew who.
“Yukina-chan. She wanted to know if you've found anything on her brother. Have you been avoiding her?” Kurama turned, resting his green eyed gaze on his silent, stoic friend.
“Hn. I haven't been avoiding her, baka Kitsune,” he muttered.
“Does she know you've been around?” Hiei's gaze remained focused out the window.
“You won't tell her, yet you remain in the Ningenkai watching. Kuwabara-kun seems to think you're stalking her.”
“What does that oaf know?” And why must he stay around my sister? Silence filled the room for a moment.
“You should really tell her, Hiei. She should know. I know your-”
“Drop it, Fox.”
“She wouldn't reject you, Hiei. She wants to know her brother and-”
“I said drop it!” Hiei glared at Kurama, who met his gaze. The next thing though, Hiei was gone and the window was open. I shouldn't have pressed.
The rain pelted Yukina mercilessly. She walked down the sidewalk, devoid now of people. I didn't think the rain would come this fast, she thought casting her gaze once more to the darkened weeping sky. I should have accepted Kazuma-kun's offer…..Was that lightning?! And of course it was. The petite Koorime jumped at the first rumble of thunder. She cast her cherry eyes upward frightfully. The wind was picking up; the storm was growing steadily worse.
Hiei twitched- and his heart fluttered- as the thunder rumbled across the sky. His face was calm, his mask in place- though he'd never admit it he wasn't all too fond of thunderstorms. He looked around from his perch, cursing the sky that seemed to have opened to drown the living below, spotting the sea green hair of his frightened twin. He shook his head. No way is Yukina out in this. She wouldn't be caught in this storm. He looked upwards, lightning flashing across the sky again.
“Ahhh!” He looked down. Yukina. Yukina looked around, jerking her head in all directions so fast it should've hurt. Yukina, what're you doing out in this? You'll end up ill. His eyes softened. She's so kind. So sweet. He shut his eyes. Why would you want me as your brother? Me? He jumped down; he knew Yukina had to be soaked by now.
“Yukina? What are you doing out here?” Yukina jumped.
“Hiei-san! You scared me,” she breathed, “Ahhhh!” She yelped again as thunder rumbled. Hiei reached his hand out to steady his startled twin.
“I didn't think I'd be caught in the rain,” Yukina whispered, looking at her soaked clothes. She looked to Hiei.
“You're soaked!” Indeed he was. Some of his black spikes even fell into his face.
“Hn, I'm fine.”
“Come back to the temple with me. You can dry off.” Hiei shook his head, but before Yukina could protest he scooped her up.
“Whaa…? Hiei, what're you …!” Yukina squeezed her eyes closed.
Hiei looked down at Yukina, her child like features splashed with rain and scrunched up in fear, both of the now constant thunder and Hiei flitting between rain soaked tree branches. He gripped her a little tighter to reassure. He hadn't meant to scare her.
He landed on the covered porch of the temple, slipping a little. He set Yukina down on her feet. She opened her eyes and smiled.
“Ah! The temple!” Yukina turned and smiled at Hiei.
“Thank you, thank you! Come in, you shouldn't stay in the rain.”
“No…..I'll just leave,” Hiei whispered. I can't impose on you.
“Are you going to go to Kurama-san's?” Yukina asked, thinking about the red headed, humanized Youko.
“Hn, no I'm not going to the Fox's.”
“But you'll be stuck in the rain! You can't leave!” Hiei turned, about to leave.
“I'll be fine,” he assured her. He was about to flit away when she spoke.
“Brother…” Hiei's eyes widened. She couldn't know!
“My brother, I would…love… if he was like you. If he was you.” Hiei's head lowered. He turned so he could see his twin. His beautiful, caring twin.
“Me…?” he whispered. A murderer, an assassin, a thief……a lair. How can she want such a person for a brother? Yukina giggled.
“Yes, you! Your strong and nice and honorable. I hope everyday that my brother will be like you.” Hiei blinked, staring. Yukina smiled. Silence engulfed them. Thunder struck again.
Yukina jumped and grabbed onto Hiei's arm.
“Gomen Nasi, Hiei-san.”
“It's…… okay…” the storm still raged.
“Yusuke-kun said…you… have a sister?” Before Hiei really thought about it, he had nodded.
“Have you met her?” Yukina whispered, innocent eyes peering into him. Hiei shook his head.
“We're both looking for our family. Maybe we'll find them?” Yukina smiled, a little sadly.
“Sister…” Yukina looked at him.
“You wouldn't believe how happy I would be if my sister was like you,” Hiei whispered, turning and giving her a rare, true smile. Yukina laughed, happiness coming off her in waves.
“Please,” she giggled, pulling him in, “come in, dry off Hiei-kun. We can have Sweet Snow.” Hiei chuckled and followed her in as Yukina smiled more. I'll wait. I'll wait until you're ready to tell me Oniisan. Forever.
The wind tossed their heartfelt words around, as the storm began to die.
“…….like you ……”

Yusuke might be stupid enough to tell Yukina that, ne? Well, how's that for my first one-shot?
