Chapter 1: Pain of Loss

It started out normally but all was quiet which was quite scary yet peaceful. The children were about the town and the adults were selling and doing their normal routines. The sky was that of a light blue and there were barely any clouds in the sky. The sun shone with strong exuberance and the heat was barbaric. The townspeople were unaware when it had happened as was I. I am but the tender age of seventeen and I was away from town, training to become the strongest warrior possible. Most people found it unusual for a female to be training to fight and even at my age. I never liked the ways the women worked and went by, it never interested me. When I saw my dear father and brother both dueling with their sleek swords, I then knew what I truly wanted. I have been training since that day. For the last fourteen years, I have been taught the art of fighting. I felt I was ready now and my beloved father knew it as well. He's seen my improvement and the skill in which I possessed. He once said to my mother, that I was much more skilled than he was at my age. My father was a proud man and I know he would've never told me that. My brother on the otherhand, was a lot more emotional. He objected at first, he said he couldn't bare the thought of his own sister's blood shed in battle. My brother was much older than I. At the time he objected, he was eight though it's unusual but at that age my brother's intelligence was beyond comprehension. I wondered from time to time, if he had been exposed to a chemical to give him such but my imagination is always active. I am not human, but the rest of my family is. I, to my understanding, was a special case when I was born. When I was first given birth to, I was told that I had a full head of hair and my eyes were of a strange and unusual color as well as my hair. I had long, sleek brown hair and my eyes were an amber color. I was of a petite stature, my height not like other girls. I was a girl of unfathomable strength and I could outwit any man in our town. I stood still in the middle of a field, the wind ravaging through my now short hair. To my understanding, I had a better chance with short rather than long hair. No enemy would have the ability to grab it in the midst of battle if it were short. I shut my eyes to relax myself and loosen the muscles in my body. I let my sword fall to the right slightly and then I swiped it. The pressure travelled about fourty-five feet to hit the target of the tree trunk. I opened my eyes and smiled to myself, my skills improving by the day. A sigh emitted from my lips as I stared up into the sky. My eyes twitched when I saw the sky, it was dark and the clouds were swirling about in the sky. It was then I saw a herd of flying beasts heading toward the direction of town. I growled and ran with all my might, back home. As I approached my town with unimaginable speed, I stopped suddenly as my eyes was exposed to the destruction. Flames had engulfed my small town. I shuddered as I ran into town and searched frantically for my family. I ran to my home but there was nothing there but dust. I stared into the dust, my eyes blank. It took a while before I regained my composure. I ran through town to find any survivors but alas there was none. I ran to the center of town to find the most horrific scene possible. I scanned the area where the bodies of my people laid, all of which had missing parts. I walked through them and came upon my poor decapitated mother, her clothing tattered and ripped, soaked with her own blood. I glanced over and saw my darling brother, whom I knew had put up a strong fight. His eyes were closed and there were many wounds upon his built body but one wound was fatal, the one which lied upon his neck. I choked at the sight. It was then I saw my beloved father, the worst victim of them all. He laid dead on the memorial of our strongest leader, the stone sword which the statue hold through his chest. He had no arm and he was cut from head to toe. My body went weak at this point and I broke down into horrible depression as tears stained my fragile face.
About an hour later I had left my town and I stopped, looking back. The last tear in which I would shed trickled down my cheek, I turned away and began to walk. I walked through the desolated field, where my memories of training lingered. I paid no mind to it and kept walking. Never in my life have i felt so much pain and despair. I was alone in this unweary world but no matter what I will stay strong for my people and my family. I continued to walk my path then I stopped at the edge of a small cliff which overlooked a city. I glanced around and from what I gathered, this was the ancient city in which wise mages lived. I jumped down the cliff and headed into twon, magic would be useful on my part if I were to battle and avenge what I had lost. I walked through the streets as the people looked on to see my battle clothing anf sword sheathed to my left side. My eyes were red from the crying I had let out, but I didn't let it get to me. I walked to the center of the town where the eldest mage resided. I made my way slowly to him and knelt before him, paying my respects as a warrior and woman. He smiled the sincerest smile like my father and stood up. He then told me what I had been through fir he said it had happened to him centuries ago. I sighed as he explained this and then he granted me the power of magic. I was told by him, that my magic will come forth slowly yet swiftly at the same time. I thanked him with the warrior's salute and headed out of town. My eyes were fixated on the path ahead of me and my thoughts seeking for revenge. These beasts of darkness took what was most precious to me and so, I will do the same to them and destroy their whole race. Every single one of them will feel my wrath, my sorrow and all of my anger. I finally reached the edge of the forest, in which the elves resided in. I walked into the forest and kept a steady pace, not wanting to meet these creatures. My father told me that they were at times ruthless and never cared much for wandering travellers. I wanted to believe him but he must've met the wrong type of elf. I pushed branches and leaves away from my path. I would've sliced right through them but I had respect for the elves and their ways. I did not want to offend them by any mean necessary. I made my way and came across a village which was flaming like there was no tomorrow. I ran quickly into the town where I sought survivors. I found none but I was present with a few ogres and demons. They both examined me with high desires but I shattered their thoughts with my sword, slaying them all with ease. I ran through the town and stopped when I heard the screams of what seemed to be children. I ran toward the sound and saw a pack of mutated wolves and their demon masters laughing. I took immediate action and slew them all. The children shivered then ran to me, embracing my legs. I caressed their heads to calm them down and led them out of the village where I saw a wounded male against a tree. The children hid behind me as I walked over to him. This young man was a picture of beauty. His face was gentle and fragile, his body was amazingly built and his aura expressed a sense of compassion and protection. I saw a feather fall to the ground then I gasped. This man was an angel, one of the many beautiful creatures I've heard about. I walked over to him and tended to him, placing a bit of water from my canteen into his mouth. He twitched then opened his eyes to gaze into my own. He coughed slightly then sat up as soon as he regained his energy. I took a step back to give him some room.
"I, thank you fair maiden for your kindness and help." He said.
"You are welcome, but tell me.. what name do you go by, angel?" I asked.
"I am called Yusuke and you, fair maiden?"
"You may call me Rikki. What happened to you?"
"I was trying to protect the elves but I wasn't enough. I do not know why they didn't kill me."
"I see.."
We spoke for about an hour and then escorted the two children to the next town of elves. Yusuke was rather glad when I came along to help him and he decided to join me on my journey of killing the darkness. We left the town and journeyed through the forest. Yusuke and I barely spoke, I supposed we were just to focused on the task ahead of us. We kept walking in silence until we reached another town which has started to burn. We rushed into town and saw many people being slaughtered. Yusuke growled and attacked head on, taking out five ogres within two minutes. I ran through the town, slicing any ogre which stood in my way. I skidded to a stop where there I was confronted by a giant whose hair was white and eyes were ice blue. I took a step back and unsheathed my sword. The giant smirked down at me and raised his large spike club, striking down at me. I jumped away from the attack and cut his cheek with my sword. He screamed loudly for I cut him rather deep. He raised his club once again and struck me into a burning building. Unfortunately for him, I was never taken down so easily. I jumped out of the window of the building an sliced his chest, but it wasn't as deep as the last. He grasped his chest and swung his club again. I jumped over it and landed on his shoulder, driving my sword right into him. He let out a shrill cry as I removed my sword and jumped down. I swirled around and with one last swoop, sliced off his head. Hard to believe my sword had the ability to do such damage to a giant, but my sword isn't normal. While journeying I managed to upgrade it with the magic I had learned. I was wounded from the hit I took from the beast but I paid no mind to it. I walked back to Yusuke, who had just finished the rest of the monsters off. Yusuke stopped and wiped the sweat off from his forehead. I waslked over to him slowly just as he looked up and saw my condition. My clothing was fine but the injuries on my legs and arms were a bit of a problem. I really didn't mind it however Yusuke wasn't thinking the same as I was. He walked over to me and used his healing magic to take care of my wounds but I backed away.
"We need to tend to your wounds Rikki.." He said to me.
"I don't need to, they're fine it's nothing to alarming.."
"How can you be so sure!?"
"I think I know my own body more than you can.."
"That did not sound right..."
"WHAT KIND OF ANGEL ARE YOU!?"
"The good kind.."
I fell over from the sudden response had gave me. He started chuckling slightly just as I pulled myself up, regaining my composure. He seemed to me, he was one of the outcast angels, the kind that really never liked fitting in. I was right at that, Yusuke was the type who didn't want to be like other angels and the more time spent with me, the more he became his real self. We left the village to burn, the survivors had already fled while we were fighting. We walked down the path slowly because the wounds on my legs were taken its toll, not that I would EVER admit it. Of course it was a bit obvious to Yusuke but he didn't say a word. I guess most people can see the pride in which I have, I guess I was around my father too much. I was advanced in everything and my will could not be beaten. I may be small but I packed a powerful punch. Not many people saw this until I had to fight then again this was the first time I have ever killed but it had to be done. I admit I was sort of afraid but I casted my fears aside and protected who need to be protected. We continued walking forward, the birds singing like it was just a normal, sunny day. We saw many creatures roaming about and it seemed peaceful. My thoughts left me and all I could think about was what would happen if the darkness took over. The birds would no longer sing, instead they would be on the ground, motionless. No happy creatures would roam the forest. All of them would be dead all to the last mouse. Some rabbit would be hung from trees, skinned. Squirrels would no long have their bushy tails. The deer would be headless or stuffed. The wolves and bears would all be gutted and their furs used for greedy purposes. I couldn't bare this thought, this darkness would overthrow everyone. Mercilessly kill everyone and have their bodies exposed murderously in front of their own kind, laughing. The killing was all too much to bare for. I can't and will not stand for my own homeland to be destroyed. I have sworn to defeat the darkness and with all my might I will. I was expecting to do this alone in solitude. The same solitude I felt when everyone in my village were brutally slaughtered. I couldn't bare that thought of other villages. I thoughts came back to me, the sight of my people and family. How their bodies were brutally degraded for evil's own pleasure. They made one mistake though, not killing me. Yusuke just kept looking ahead, not wanting to bother me in my train of thought unless it was important. It was then the sun began to set and Yusuke stopped. He gathered a few branches and placed them in the circle of rocks. He lit them aflame and a campfire started burning brightly. I sat by the fire and stared into the reddish flames. Yusuke was looking about, gathering berries and other edible foods. I was foolish enough to forget to buy food at the Mage's City but I was vunerable then.
Yusuke looked up at me as he crushed the berries into a handmade bowl, the flames lighting his eyes so gently. I wasn't paying attention, my mind had wandered off back to childhood. My eyes closed slightly and I fell asleep in my sitting position. Yusuke chuckled to himself and pulled out a quilt, wrapping it around me. He then began to eat slowly, staring out into the darkness of the forest. The crickets played their song and the birds laying themselves to bed. It was all so peaceful and the cool breeze even felt good. Yusuke finished the last of his food then laid himself down to sleep. Morning came just as peaceful as night faded away. The fire had died down in the middle of the night. I opened my eyes slowly to see Yusuke already packing up. I yawned slightly then stood slowly, handing him the quilt. He smiled, taking the quilt and packing it away. We stood up and I made sure that the fire was definitely out then we moved forward. I dusted my clothing off and yawned slightly while Yusuke just kept ahead of me. As we walked, we saw smoke in the distance and began to ran toward it. We knew from the moment we saw smoke that I village was in dire need of help. We ran into the village and there we saw demons terrorizing a human girl. I ran over and unsheathed my sword. Yusuke blinked as he watched. I skidded right through the pack and they all fell to the ground, dead. Yusuke's eyes widened because he didn't even see the hit. I kneeled down to the girl and lifted her up. She smiled, her long silky black hair and dark eyes which shone like the brightest pearl. A few strands of her hair fell over her face as she looked over at Yusuke, noticing his wings. She didn't draw back nor was she frightened, she just smiled softly and waved. Yusuke sweatdropped and waved back, walking over. I looked up at her, obviously shorter than her.
"Are you alright?" I asked as she looked down slightly.
"Oh I am fine, thank you.." She said.
"You got a name girlie?"
"OH! My name is Kaya pleased to meet you.."
"I'm Rikki and he's Yusuke." He nodded.
We talked for a couple of minutes then Yusuke took over and told me to put out the fire. I nodded and ran off, trying to find any survivors. To my unfortunate surprise, no one had survived and when I reached the end of town I saw it. I saw a pile of bodies composed of children. My eyes widened with horror and I nearly collapsed to my knees, shaking. These poor children never had a chance but who would be so cruel to degrade them like this. It was sickening, utterly repulsive! I couldn't move, I felt paralyzed from the waist down. All I could do was stare at the children and shake. I heard someone from inside one of the buildings. I looked over and saw a man walk out of the burning bulding, a sword to his side and a white headband on his forehead. To my discovery, he was a demon but by the look on his face, he was just as horrified as I was. He took notice to this after I had collapsed and he wondered what happened to me. That's when he saw the children, all bloodied and piled on on another. He stood a bit away from me, staring at the children. I couldn't do anything to move myself and I feared that this expression wouldn't last long and he would attack at any given moment. It was then I heard footsteps approaching us and the demon turned to see Kaya and Yusuke. Yusuke unsheathed his sword but Kaya jumped in front of him, her arms out. "He's a good demon.." She said as Yusuke sheathed his sword once again. Yusuke looked at me then at the children, his eyes wide with terror. Kaya walked over to the demon and stared at the pile in near tears. Yusuke looked over at Kaya. "His name is Hiei.." She said, knowing what he was going to ask. Yusuke nodded then walked over to me, placing a hand on my shoulder. I just stared, this scene bringing back the scene at my village. My mother, brother and father.. how their bodies were torn and shattered. My heart broke that day and as soon as it mended this sight broke it again. I felt weak and vunerable, which made me a target. The two pair stared at me as I stood up and looked around, noticing a rather large human walking from the shadows. He was laughing deviously and stared at me. "I remember.. how you looked when you saw your dead family.." He said. My eyes widened and I started to tremble. He laughed again, that laugh. How I hated it. He wouldn't stop laughing, he wouldn't stop. "It was me and the beasts that destroyed your village Rikki then I killed these rats.. just to piss you off. Did it work Rikki? Will you unleash your power and kill me or are you too vunerable?" Yusuke growled as he stepped in from of me as I stared at him. Kaya gasped slightly as the human man looked at her, Hiei stepped in front of her. He laughed again.
That detestable laugh, I couldn't take it anymore and I charged at him. I pulled out my sword and sliced his cheek. He stumbled backward then threw a punch at me. I flipped backward and closed my eyes. Yusuke watched on again, intrigued. My sword leaned to the right of me and then I swung it, the force so unimaginable it sliced the man in half. His torso fell to the ground and the rest of him stood for a moment before collapsing. I sheathed my sword once again and glared down at the now dead victim. Kaya was quite surprised as well as Hiei. Kaya clapped for me, knowing that I have the strength of nearly five men. She applauded my courage, my pride and my soul but I paid no mind to it. Yusuke stood silent as I left the vicinity in utter dismay. Yusuke looked at the two. "You might as well join us.." Yusuke said.
"Join?" Hiei asked.
"To defeat the darkness.. it was Rikki's idea.."
"That's near impossible.."
"You tell her that. Her stubborn self won't care.."
They both nodded and followed after me slowly. They didn't want to get to close to me because I might push them away so I could have some space. They just watched as I kept walking at a steady pace through the forest. Kaya sighed and looked back at Hiei and Yusuke, talking to one another. Kaya ran up to me and smiled. I smiled slightly but kept on walking as if nothing had happened. We kept walking until we came upon a rather small village, small enough that we could step over it with ease. Hiei blinked twice then looked at Yusuke. "Town of Faeries.." He said. We started walking toward it then shrank so that we can explore. We looked around and saw many children faeries playing about. I stared at them, remembering how the children of my village would do the exact same. I, for some reason, was scared that day. It wasn't because of the thought of losing my family and friends while I walked through my burning village. I just don't know what scared me so terribly. Maybe it was because I would be alone for the rest of my life, that no one would ever accept me like my people did. My eyes wanted to tear up but I wouldn't allow them to. I didn't want my travelling companions to see me cry. They might think less of me and insult me for my vunerability. Kaya and Yusuke didn't notice my reaction but walked ahead to gather supplies. Hiei stood behind me, watching my every move. I didn't move much, I just stared into the distance. No one on the town found it strange of my actions in fact they all ignored me. I suppose I wasn't very good to look at but that never really mattered. My thoughts ran so quickly they rendered me immobile. I couldn't move, not after what my thoughts brought back to me. Hiei kept watching me, not really wanting to interrupt my thoughts but he had to. He placed a hand on my shoulder and I snapped out my my slight daze. I looked over at him and he removed his hand, walking after Kaya and Yusuke. I blinked and walked after him slowly. We made it to the two who were talking to yet another demon, who was protecting the town from harm. Hiei smiled slightly and ran over to the demon. I guessed that he knew this stranger who had long red hair and beautiful green eyes. If it were me, it would've been hard for me to tell him apart from the other demons. I just walked over slowly as this demon looked over at me and smiled warmly. Yusuke looked at me and smiled. "You okay Rikki..." He asked. I simply nodded, not really paying attention once again. "She's a really amazing girl Kurama. She has speed, strength and wit. I don't know how she managed to become this strong but she did. I do not know the full extent of her power but I hope it's great." Yusuke bragged. Kurama chuckled as I stood there, uneffected by his comments. Kurama nodded at Hiei and looked at me. "Human right?" He asked. I folded my arms and shook my head sharply. Kurama nodded slightly then blinked. I was looking around the town quickly and placed my hand onto the hilt of my sword. It was then that the Diablos, which were evil versions of faeries, showed up.Yusuke ran beside me, his hand glowing brightly. Hiei unsheathed his sword and Kurama pulled out a rose, creating a whip afterward. Yusuke stood back and threw his fist forward. "SHOTGUN!" He screamed taking out at least ten Diablos at once. I stood ahead and raised my hands. "CELESTIAL WIND!" A wind came from my hands and took down five. Hiei rushed forward and took down ten more and Kurama sliced his whip in the air "ROSE WHIPSLASH!" and the rest were destroyed. Hiei sheathed his sword and everyone else sighed as the faeries laughed and clapped happily from saving them. Kurama blushed slightly as the faerie women threw kisses and waved like girls at him. I folded my arms and grunted at how girly they were acting. Yusuke and Hiei both chuckled but then most of the faerie women started critizing me. "Is that supposed to be a girl?" one said. "What is up with her clothing?" Another said. "I think she's really a man trying to be a woman.." "She really needs to act like a real woman." "What a disgrace.." "How pitiful.." I ignored every comment and kept my arms folded, holding back my anger and temptation to killing them. Hiei growled as well as the rest of the gang. I rolled my eyes, seeing that I am not wanted and walked away in silence. The women watched as I made my way out of the village, growing to normal size. I ran my fingers through my hair and walked off in the direction we were once going. The rest followed and Kurama decided to join us, disgusted by the remarks from the women. I was far ahead so they had to speed up quite a bit to catch up with me. I kept silent, not bothering to converse with the others.
Night fell peacefully as we travelled the forest. Yusuke once again lit a fire and started picking berries and other edible delights. Everyone sat around the fire, huddled close for the night was quite cold. I sat far from the fire, under a tree with my arms folded. Kurama looked over at me then stared at the fire. Kaya was babbling her heart out with Yusuke, casting glances at Kurama once in a while. Hiei stood silent as he stared at the fire, thinking about his past which remained a mystery to us. The laughter became slightly louder and Kurama would chuckle now and then. Hiei and I were in the quintessence of silence. We didn't bother to make contact with the others, we just sat in silence. About two hours later the gang was still talking about nonesense that had nothing to do with our mission. I stared out into the darkness of the forest. Hiei glanced over at me and walked over, sitting next to me. The others didn't notice and I barely noticed myself. He looked up the sky and stared at the stars. I sat silently and glanced at him for a second while stared up into the shimmering sky. He looked peaceful at this point, not like any other time I would look over at him. His red eyes were soft and warm while the stars illuminated them. It was quite different, I have neve seen a demon like this before. A good one even. I looked up and saw a shooting star pass overhead. Hiei smiled slightly as it passed and he looked down to the ground, seeing a blue flower in the ground. There was also a small squirrel passing by and running to a tree to sleep. Hiei let out a sigh and shut his eyes, falling asleep instantly. I looked at him then looked back at the others who were readying themselves to sleep. I laid my head against the tree and shut my eyes. It wasn't long before everyone fell asleep and morning came. Everyone was up and waiting for Hiei to wake up. I walked over to him and shook him gently. His eyes fluttered open as he looked at me. Everyone snickered and waved at him but all he did was grunt and stand up. We all started forward once again, trying to make our way to the wisest dragon that lived. Lucid was his name and he has a will much stronger than my own. Kaya started up another conversation again, but with Kurama this time. I also noticed that she was blushing slightly the whole time and to my knowledge I figured she had a crush on him. Just like all girls they blush when they talk to the guy they like. Girls are so pathetic sometimes, the way they giggle, blush, talk nonstop about stupid nonesense. I found it quite ridiculous really. Hiei walked beside me, yawning every once in a while. Kaya's infectious laughter echoed through the forest. She covered her mouth regretfully then laughed nervously, rubbing the back of her head. We kept walking ahead but unfortunately Hiei and I sensed a dark presence approaching. We both stopped and looked at each other, nodding. The other stopped and looked back as the sky darkened and thunder roared. Kaya yelped and hid behind Kurama as black smoke covered the area we resided in temporarily. The smoke thickened and the dark presence made itself seen. It was a dark figure with eyes red as newly shed blood. It grinned devilishly as it looked straight at me. My eyes lost its shine and I was banished from the corridors of my mind. The figure motioned me toward it and I started walking forward. Hiei and Kurama growled and Yusuke's eyes widened. The figured laughed as I came near, obviosuly having something up its sleeve but what? Hiei wasn't going to stand around and wait to find out.
