Chapter 8: Ran Away, Ran In/10 month-August

Shuichi played with Rahne while waiting for Tina to return with their food. They had walked for days till they came out of Koorime territory and enter green land. They had found a cave and made it into a home, but had little supplies in case they had to leave in a hurry. Tina had heard in a nearby town that the Koorime were looking for a youko and a ningen, so Shuichi and Rahne stayed at the cave while Tina went to get food and supplies.

She froze when she felt a familiar ki came near. Not again! That fire Koorime doesn't give up!

`I have to admit,' said Youko, `he's determined to find us.'

`I can see that,' she said as she grabbed Rahne and headed for a smaller cave she had found while exploring. It wasn't very large but it could fit her, Rahne, and Tina if they tried. Crawling in she held her breathe as Hiei approached her hiding place.

Hiei cursed when the youko he was tracking disappeared. He heard about the youko and the ningen the Koorime were after and decided to investigate it. He had felt a youko nearby and went toward it, but somehow the youko knew he was coming and hid. He'll never find it now.

He heard a rustling in the shrubbery and looked in the direction of the sound. Next thing he knew a sword was about to behead him. He quickly dodged it and turned to face a blonde ningen woman, her hair plaited down her back.

"What the hell is a human doing here," he yelled.

"This is my mistress' territory," said the human. "Get out."

"I don't wasn't to fight. I am looking for someone. A red haired human by the name of Kurama. Have you seen him?"

"I have seen no one by that name or description. I will tell you now to leave. This is my mistress' territory."

"May I see your mistress? She may have seen him."

"My mistress sees no one. Leave."

"I have to see your mistress."

"I'm warning you."

"I'm staying till I see your mistress."

The human jumped and tried another swipe at Hiei but he quickly took out his sword and blocked and turned to swing at her too. She blocked and charged to attack him. He stood ready for her attack.

"Tina, stop!"

Tina stopped short of Hiei, her blade inches from him, and looked at her mistress. Hiei looked over at the red haired youko, a touch of silver in her hair, and her gold eyes held authority at the guard. She held a bundle protectively in her arms.

"You shall not attack him, Tina," she said and Tina lowered her weapon and slid it in the sheath at her hip. The youko nodded and walked toward the cave, Tina a step behind.

"Wait," exclaimed Hiei and Shuichi stopped, but she didn't turn around. "Have you seen a silver youko named Kurama? He's one of your people."

"Of my people I know of only myself, Tina, and my daughter. I suggest you leave and unlike Tina I won't give you a second warning."

She walked away, sighing softly when she felt Hiei leave. She put Rahne to sleep while Tina cooked the dinner she caught.

`Why does Hiei want to find me,' she thought as she watched the flames while Tina cut up roots and vegetables for a stew. `He sounded desperate to find me.'

`Now do you believe me,' asked Youko. `Hiei wants us back.'

`Yes, I believe you. But now what are we going to do?'

`We find him.'

`You mean go back. To Kaasan, the guys, back to the temple.'

`Yes, we need to go *home*.'

"Tina, pack what we need. We're leaving."

"Where are we going?"

"Home."

The next day they headed out. They only took what they needed and left the rest behind. Shuichi back tracked the route she had ran. She didn't remember much when she had ran from Mukuro's palace, her mind had been in a daze. She only remembered running through a lot of trees for hours till she had fallen in the snow of the Koorime country. Hopefully her dim memory is enough to find the portal again.

They kept up the same route for a few days, Shuichi stopping often to look for land marks. When there were no more light to travel by they made camp and left the next morning.

One night they had made camp and Shuichi was worried that they would never find the portal.

`We'll find it,' said Youko. `I have been everywhere in the Makai. I know where to go.'

`Then where do we go?'

`Well . . .'

`Ha, we're lost.'

She froze, sensing a familiar ki signature coming closer to where she and Tina had made camp. It wasn't Hiei but it was still familiar signature and after spending six months with the Koorime she knew it well.

"Tina! Koorime!'

The words were barely out of her mouth before the ningen grabbed her sword and drew it. By then fifteen Koorime guards surrounded them and had out their ice spears.

Shuichi grabbed Rahne and clutched her tight against her chest. Rahne cried at the sense of danger she felt from her mother, red-gold tear gems falling from her cheeks and into the blanket that was wrapped around her.

Shuichi tried to command the plants to shield them but she couldn't. Her ki was suppressed.

"Tina, I'm warded!"

Tina let out a fierce cry and attacked a Koorime, her sword held high. The Koorime dodged it and plunged her spear into the ningen.

"Tina, no!"

The ex-guard fell to the ground and the Koorime went toward Shuichi. Without her plant power she was defenseless, so she hung her head and let the guards lead her away, back to their territory of the Koorime. They took her to a prison camp and put her with the other residents. Shuichi searched the camp for a place to stay and found a hut of a suitable size to live in. crawling in she fell asleep with Rahne beside her.

Tina tried to stay conscious as she felt her blood leave her body. She was lucky that the spear missed all her vital organs but that didn't make it hurt any less. Before she past out she saw a black shadow loom over her.

She woke much later on a mattress in a cave. She was bandaged and had a wet towel on her head. Removing it she tried to stand but a flare of pain through her side made her gasp and fall back on the pillow.

"I wouldn't move if I were you," said a voice. Tina looked over to see the demon her and her mistress meet a few days ago. "I may not be a healer like Yukina but I stopped the bleeding and you had a high fever for a few days. It broke last night."

"Why? Why did you help me?"

"Because you know something I need. Or, more specifically, you mistress does."

"She told you all she knew."

"No. She told me what she wanted me to hear. But I find it strange that a red haired youko isn't with her clan."

"She's not red, she's silver!"

"What did you say?"

"My mistress is silver!"

Hiei walked up to her and grabbed her, making her wince when he moved her side.

"You are going to tell me all you know about your mistress and you're going to do it know!"

Tina stared in shock as she started the tale.

You really think I would kill Tina off like that? No we need her. And I bet you hate me right now, don't ya? Shuichi and Hiei found each other but never knew it. Actually Shuichi knew it was Hiei but Hiei never knew it was Shuichi. You hate me don't ya?
