Chapter Eight

Over Protective

* * *

I'd be lying if I said I was completely unscathed

I might be proving you right with my silence or my retaliation

would I be letting you win in my non reaction?

how would I explain?

how would I explain this to my children if I had them?

because I can't not

because I can't not

because I can't afford to be misread one more time

Hiei walked into the room an hour later to find Hala staring out the window. He walked up behind her and said, "Thinking about anything in particular?"

She bowed her head and turned to face him. "I don't know how I will be able to face him in school tomorrow. I can't do it."

Hiei firmly grasped her shoulders. "Never say you can't do something. Tomorrow you will walk into that school and prove that you are strong."

She shook her head. "But I'm not strong Hiei!"

"Yes you are. You are strong because you have to be. My love for you will keep you strong!"

She looked from his eyes. "You're love isn't enough for me to do this Hiei. I'm not ready to face him."

Her words stung him. "Hala..."

"I'm sorry Hiei but I'm not going."

It pained him to be so harsh with her, but he had to. "Hala, if you don't go he will have won. The scum needs to know that he holds no power over you Hala. You have to go and prove yourself. Don't let him own you."

She stared into his eyes. She had never seen such a mix of emotions before. "Hiei," she whispered. Slowly she nodded her head and Hiei pressed her against him. She sighed into his embrace and closed her eyes, once again feeling entirely safe. He gently placed her upon the bed and let her sleep. After what she had been through, rest was her only option. She needed to regain her strength. Especially if she was going to face Ghalib the next day.

Hiei walked down the stairs and into the living room where Kurama was watching TV. "How is she?"

Hiei plopped onto the couch and let out a frustrated sigh. "That bastard is going to pay for what he did." Kurama nodded in silence. He whole-heartedly agreed with Hiei but he was unsure of what his friend might be planning to make Ghalib pay. Instead Kurama turned his attention to a book on the end table. He turned off the TV and began to read, unaware that Hiei was watching him.

Hiei's ruby eyes glared at the fox. I wonder how he can be so calm about all of this? Does Kurama just not care? If he didn't care then I will have to hurt him as well. No, Kurama cares. If he didn't he never would have let Hala stay here to recover.

Later on in the day Hiei brought Hala some dinner and she picked at it, loosing her appetite. She was dreading the next day. However she had to go through with it. If she didn't then she could never move on with her life. As darkness fell Hiei took her tray back down to the kitchen and then returned to the guest bedroom. Kurama had told his mother that Hala's parents were out of town. Hiei stayed over frequently so that wasn't even an issue. Luckily Shiori had bought the story without question.

Now Hiei lay beside Hala on the bed. She had fallen asleep just as the night before but Hiei was wide awake. He was vaguely aware of Hala's light breathing beside him. He was focusing on all the ways to greatly hurt Ghalib without killing him. Hiei settled on a nice thrashing with one and only one warning for him. Knowing what he would do Hiei slowly began to relax.

When sleep overcame him he found himself dreaming of a time that he and Hala could be happy together. They had a family, a house, Hala knew about his being a demon and she didn't care, and everything was going great for them. Sunlight on his face woke him and he was prepared for the new day.

would I be whining if I said I needed a hug?

would you feel slighted if I said your love's not enough?

how can I complain?

how can I complain when I'm the one who reaches for it?

because I can't not

because I can't not

because I cannot walk without my crutches

because I can't not

because I can't not

because I can't help wonder why you ask me

She stared at the building looming in front of her. Hiei gently squeezed her hand. She nodded and they crossed the threshold into the building. They walked to their first class and sat down, next to each other. Again in health they sat together. Lunch was when they saw Ghalib.

Outside at a picnic table Hala was eating a sandwich and Hiei stood to go get some napkins for the table. Just feet from the door to the building Ghalib was standing, glaring at Hala. As Hiei approached Ghalib's gaze flickered to him. "What do you want you little maggot."

In a flash Ghalib was against the building with a black eye already forming. "YOU FUCKING BASTARD! HOW DARE YOU! YOU HAVE NO RESPECT OR HONOR AND DESERVE TO DIE!" A crowd gathered around them as Hiei beat the shit out of a screaming Ghalib. Hiei pinned him by the neck against the wall. Ghalib sputtered but could make no recognizable sound. Blood poured from several wounds on his face. His lip was bleeding and it looked like Hiei had torn part of Ghalib's nose. Crude, but effective. Hiei lowered his voice so only Ghalib could hear him and made it echo in his mind for effect. "If you look at Hala, speak to Hala, or even think about Hala in a way that is the least bit disrespectful, they will have to identify your body by your dental records. And if you touch her again, there will be no body to identify, do you understand me?"

Ghalib struggled to get away, knowing that normal people can't go into other people's heads. "Yes," he whispered.

Hiei tightened his grip on Ghalib. "I can't hear you asshole."

Ghalib raised his voice, nearly pissing his pants he was so scared. "Yes. I understand you. I will never even think about her again!"

Hiei released Ghalib and watched the piece of shit crumble at his feet. Hiei kicked him in the balls and then in the gut before saying, "Damn straight you won't, fucking faggot." Hiei turned from the gibbering mass that was Ghalib to see Hala walking over to the scene. He pushed past some people and she stared at him in awe.

"Hiei..." was all she could manage to say.

A smirk fell upon his face but it faded as he felt someone grab his ear. "I thought we weren't going to fight anymore Hiei?"

Hiei was being led to the principal's office by one of the school administrators. This particular one Hiei happened to be on a first name basis with. Hiei used to get into a lot of trouble with not following rules and leaving in the middle of the day. He, Yuske, and Kuwabara always got into trouble but lately he had been behaving more often. Yuske and Kuwabara got called in on a daily basis but for the past few months Hiei had been somewhat of a model student.

Hala walked silently at his side. While the administrator talked with the principal Hala kissed Hiei's cheek. "Thank you Hiei," she said, giving him a quick hug. She then hurried off to class while Hiei sat to await his punishment.

to all the unheard wisdom in the school yard

you think you're the right ones

you think you're the charmed ones I'm sure

how can you go on with such conviction?

and who do you think you are why do you question me?

because we can't not

because we can't not

because we can't help laugh at underestimations

because we can't not

because we can't not

because we can't afford to be misled one more time

because we can't not

because we can't not

because we cannot help without your willingness

"Hiei," Hala called as she ran from the school building. "I didn't see you in class after Japanese and I grew worried.

Hiei held her to him as she threw her arms around him and said, "I got suspended for a week and I'll be back next Monday."

She pulled away from his embrace and hit him playfully. "You really went all out on his ass didn't you?"

Hiei shrugged and then chuckled. "It was worth it and now he won't even look at you." She smiled and they started towards her house. She was beginning to relax now that Ghalib had been put in his place.

Hiei glanced slightly down at her face, which now had a small smile upon it. When had she last smiled because of him? Hiei didn't know that answer. But now that she had started to smile and get back into a normal routine he never wanted her to leave or to stop smiling. It was the most precious gift she could give him.

They parted at her door and she went inside telling her parents she had stayed with a friend and had meant to call but had been enjoying herself. How she was able to say that and make it sound true Hiei didn't know. He sat outside her house all night and only slept when she had been sleeping for two hours. The rest of the week he walked her to and from school and then stayed outside her window all night. She rather enjoyed having him there.

They had been slowly letting their relationship redevelop. After his first day of school he was going to take her out to celebrate. She would be his forever and Hiei was certain of it. He could not see himself ever caring for someone like he cared for Hala. Soon, after she completely trusted him, he would tell her everything. He only hoped she loved him enough to still want him after his revelation.

A/N- I feel good now that Ghalib had the shit beaten out of him! YAY HIEI! So Hala and Hiei are a couple but they are going very slowly. Hiei's going to be back in school soon and he has been sleeping outside her house. All's well that end's well right? Well here's a heads up, the drama isn't over yet.

P.S. I am really sorry for the wait on this chapter. I will try to post as soon as I can with the next one. I have also started something on fanfiction.net. Look for a story based on Daughters of the Moon series by me it's called Known Acceptance. This will basically be what my story Encountering a Goddess will be based on. It's not done and Gabby and the people in Known Acceptance won't be in it. Well, one of them will but she's not even in that story yet. If you don't read it when I re-write Encountering a Goddess I will have a summary of Known Acceptance for the prologue. Thanks for reading this long postscript and I hope you liked the chapter. Please review if you want, it boosts my self esteem.
