Yu Yu Hakusho Fan Fiction ❯ My Kitsune ❯ Prologue ( Prologue )

[ P - Pre-Teen ]
A flicker of silver white dissapeared under some bushes. A silver fox creapt slowly out to peer and sniff the air for danger. He's injured, one side of him was stained in blood. He looked at the clearing that will leave him exposed if he made a run for the caves he was going to. This is the last bush and the huntress is hot on his heels. The cave rested at the base of an ancient tree, a tree so old it has memories and a mind of it's own.

The ancient one had befriended him long ago, offering him a bolthole within the many twists and turns of it's earthy caverns. He discovered this cave and it's sentry years ago, it's big enough to admit the huntress but deep and winding enough to loose her in.

Hopefully.

He ran from the bushes and went straight for the caves he was running to. An arrow barely missed him as he dodged and flickered in and out of sight. It pinged dangerously close to his ear, the cave was near, just a little more.

Four then five more arrows folllowed and missed in rapid succession until the sixth grazed his back. The fox faltered and another arrow imbedded itself on his hindlegs. He yelped as 4 tails dissapeared into the dark mouth of the cave.

He ran in the dark his eyes adapting rapidly to the semi-darknessness, his ears listened for the barely there sound of steps running after him.

Fungi and mushrooms sent soft glowing light that illuminated the twists and turns of the cave. Images danced in ghostly hues pictures of demons, friends, enemies, places. They looked alive, almost real, but his nose and ears told him otherwise. They were illusions, visions designed to torment lesser demons and for demons like the Fox it was a focus for opening dimensions.

He was looking for a particular illusion, an image... he remembered it was this way, he paused to let a few drops of his blood mark his turn at a fork. Then he ran on ahead the light nimble steps of the huntress was close and as expected followed his blood spoor. He heared a twang as an arrow was loosed and a surge of youki raced after him. He dodged in time and nearly fell into a hole. He leapt across it and made a sharp turn, he found the illusion he needed.

He began snuffling around for a likely spot to lay a trap, he paused parting damp dirt on his chosen ground. He then began sniffing the fur on his back. He retrieved a piece of bark that has some mold growing on it and dropped it into his chosen spot then began nuzzling it to life. A colony of spore bearing fungi sprouted and began covering the path to the illusion he needed.

Another twang resounded in the air. The huntress is using her seeker arrows to find him. He waited until the ki powered arrow was very close before he dodged behind a boulder and using fox magic blended in to hide himself.

The steps came to a stop and he heard stones falling into the hole he almost fell into. He could hear her breathing, could feel the pulse of her youki.

"I know your in here Kitsune, you ran yourself into a dead end this time." A soft kind sounding woman's soprano said in a voice that was barely a whisper and yet carried like she shouted. "You should have ran for the ningenkai like you did the last time."

The fox froze.

"Well, well, if it isn't the Youko." she whispred as she made the turn. Feet shuffled, stance taken. "Shall we dance Kitsune? This time though, I'm going to destroy you for good." the sound of poignards unsheathed, metal scraping metal, feet crunching sand.

The fox remained still as stone "Hiding your ki won't save you Kurama!" steps were taken, she's attacking. The sounds of struggle filled the air, the Fox remained still until he heard the soft pops the fungi made as they were stepped on. The smell of their spores saturated the thick closed air of the cave. The fox dug his nose deeper into the fluff of his many tails. A deadly gleam lit the his golden eyes.

"Kurama, you bastard son of a bitch! you are not getting away from me this time! I will destroy you like you destroyed me!" The fox remained still trying not to breathe until the sounds of struggle ceased and the fog created by the Janen Ju mold thinned. He creapt out slowly and the equivalent of a smirk appeared on the Fox's face. The huntress was trapped in the deception plant.

He looked up at the illusion of the Youko Kurama who stood still and deadly against the wall rose under his nose, a smirk of displeasure on his lips.

Overkill... there's enough spores in the air to infect anything and anybody that dared come within these parts of the cave. The fox fled the place awkwardly sneezing and shaking his head, using up more youki to keep the mold from turning him into another victim.

When he was clear of the spore haze the fox pulled at the arrow imbedded on it's hind quarters and whimpered. He gave his wounds a few licks before he turned around and kicked dirt at the haze and the Janen Ju with it's occupant who was still ranting fighting a deeper illusion of the mind.

The ground around was still covered with the mold. He shook his paws and regretted it instantly. He then limped/walked for the exit he needed to get out of here. He searched hurriedly following his own blood spoor. He's badly wounded and very slowly but surely dying.

Yoshira's arrows were definitely poisoned.

He counted 6 open wounds. 2 direct hits, 4 scratches...

He estimated he has about a half hour before he really dies. There's something he needed to do first before he could truly be at peace. He tripped and bumped his head against the ground. It was dark for a few minuites before he could force his eyes open again and move, he followed his blood trail until the light of the cave was visible. He closed his eyes gathering his strength listening to the ancient tree, the ground under him lurched he felt disoriented like he was shifting between worlds.

All he wanted now was... rest... rest means death...

Unacceptable. He shook his head inducing the reflex that got rid of water from the fur. The resulting pain gave him a focus and he growled as he asked the tree to destroy the cave as he made his way out. He ran for the entrance just as the roots of the tree began growing larger, crushing stones breaking walls. The cave collapsed just as he got out of it. He stumbled again, and almost immediately his senses told him an earthquake was coming. A big one.

The mother of all earthquakes, it felt like the world itself was being torn apart...

He searched frantically for a weakness between the fabric of the worlds and found them everywhere, perhaps generated by this earthquake. Quick as a flash he made an adrenalin boosted run for the nearest one just as the ground under him broke and heaved. Once inside the tear he focused on a middle aged woman he knew and trusted, in who's household he was raised and nurtured. To a home he had neglected for years.

Bitter winter winds sent tendrils of painful ice into his already hurting body the fall is great, the tear opened from the sky. He focused what remained of his youki to keeping himself whole as he crashed into a leafless tree breaking branches and a leg. He eventually fell with a heavy thud on the brown autumn parched grass. He needed concealment he can't be found out here in the open, bigger than most dogs, a silver white fox with four tails.

With the last remaining ounces of his will and youki he crawled and whimpered his way to the tool shed where he curled up amongst some rags and potting dirt bags. He chewed on some bitter leaves he picked from his fur and licked his many wounds it was warm enough in here without the winds, he was in no danger of freezing he could stay here for the time being. He fought against fatigue and the effects of the poison to make sure he licked all his wounds, swallowing the same bitter medicine, he was chewing on. He barely finished when the world tilted and everything went black.
