Nature versus Nurture

Dead Again! How the hell can I be dead again, Yusuke thought.

Actually he new how. Some powerful jerk tried to destroy the world,
Yusuke tried to stop him, and they ended up dragging each other through the
gates of hell. Still, this must have been the third time it happened.

Koenma was doing calculations on an abacus, supposedly deciding whether
it was even worth bringing him back to life. Actually the prince of spirit
world just wanted to make Yusuke sweat. Minutes ago Yusuke had called
him a toddler &*(%%* yet again.

Finally the pip-squeak got up from his calculations and announced that he
would revive Yusuke. Unfourtunately, it would take some time to restore
his body. Hiei and Kurama were still gathering the pieces.

Why did this have to happen know. Yusuke was finally going to get some
time to spend with his girlfriend Keiko.

Koenma was getting sick of Yusukes constant whinning, and he had some
cases that needed to be handled on earth. So he began looking for a quicker
solution.

Hmmm! Koenma thought:

Reincarnation. The upside was that he could call Yusuke a toddler
^**%%& for a while. The bulk of his power comes from his spirit, so he
should be just as useful in a new body. The downside was that a baby spirit
detctive might not be taken seriously. It was a problem Koenma knew all to
well.

Demonification. The upside was that Yusuke would be even more powerful.
The downside was that there is a 8/10 chance he would turn evil.

This left one option. “A walk in spirit.” Koenma proceeded to explain this
to Yusuke. “You have heard of people changing completely after a near
death experience. Sometimes when a person comes close enough to death
that there soul leaves there body, the soul is immediately sent to hell,
purgatory, or limbo even if the body can still be revived. The damned souls
department is very quick in there work. When this happens the spirit of
someone who died before there time is allowed to take over there body and
live that persons life. I can use this to find you a temporary body. You will
even retain most of your power since the bulk of it comes from your spirit.”

Yusuke thought about this. It might be fun to be someone else for a week.
He could do all kinds of naughty things, then return to his own body with no
consequences. If the person the body belongs to gets sent to hell or limbo
then it would probably be someone nobody would miss.

“Sounds good” he declared.

“I’ll send you to the next suitable body.” Koenma responded.

“Wait, your gonna pick. How do I know you won’t stick me with some fat,
beat-up, ugly, old *%&%&$.” Yusuke commented.

“Your not buying a car” Koenma snapped.

Later, Yusuke was using his invisible, intangible, ghostly form to spy on a
womens locker room when he felt a strange tug on his spirit. Then
everything went black.

Yusuke awoke, groaned, then got up. It took her two tries because her chest
felt unusually heavey. She thought, pain, nausea, and sticking to the floor
were all signs of life. Koenma must of found her a rental.

She was alive again. She couldn’t wait to go see Keiko.

Yusuke looked at his new hands. They were so small and dainty, with no
scratches, scars, or callouses. Koenma must have stuck him in the body of a
total wuss. She noticed blood coming from the wrist. It looked as though it
had been cut, but not very deep. Maybe that’s how this body became
available, someone tried to off himself and didn’t have the guts to finish the
job. Yusuke vaguely remembered hearing that people who commit suicide
go straight to pugatory. However, that is a catholic belief and having been
to the afterlife she knew that the one true faith was actually …

Suddenly, Yusuke looked in the mirror and there was Keiko. More
acurately she was in Keikos body.

Screams of toddler *&$*()$& could be heard all throughout the city.

Why the hell am I Keiko, Yusuke screamed.

She was talking to nobody particular, though she expected Koenma or Botan
to show up at any moment and explain the situation, or at least laugh at her.

When no answer came she thought to herself how do I contact spirit world.
This was a strange question! Usually it was spirit world that wouldn’t stop
bothering her.

Looking around she noticed a Oji board and a crystal ball on Keiko’s bed.
Maybe Keiko was trying to do the same thing. There were also scattered
papers that appeared to be printouts from a website on Shinto rituals. It
spoke of using a blood sacrifice to contact a spirit.

Keiko couldn’t be stupid enough to slit her wrist just to talk to her, she
thought. Just then Koenma appeared on the crystal ball.

Where the heck is Keiko? Yusuke bellowed.

Look in the mirror, Koenma retorted.

That isn’t what I meant, Yusuke snapped.

Yusuke, I know your spirit awareness is pathetic, but try to focus on the
energy to the left of you Koenma finished.

Spirit awareness was more Kuwabara’s thing, but Yusuke focused and
eventually Keikos ghost became visible. Her expression was unsure, and
she tried to speak but Yusuke couldn’t muster enough spirit awareness to
hear the words.

Koenma began talking. Yusuke, since you died, Keiko has been trying to
learn psychic channelling from Kurama. Against his advice, she attempted a
spell she wasn’t ready for while alone. Basically she tried to channel your
spirit, and wound up being possessed and having her spirit separated from
her body. What’s worse I can’t fix this until the moon is aligned again in
one month.

What! Yusuke demanded. I thought this had something to do with that walk
in spirit thing you talked about earlier. You made it sound like moving
spirits in and out was a casual thing.

Don’t blame me! Koenma yelled. It’s her botched spell that’s holding you
there.

Koenma then quieted as he noticed the regretful expression on Keiko’s face.

I can’t be Keiko for a month Yusuke screamed.

Actually, you can’t live a present and past life simultaneously, Koenma
declared. It’s like people who get reincarnated not being burdened by past
life memories. In a few minutes you will think you are Keiko, though you
will still be yourself in the spiritual sense.

Huh! Yusuke responded.

The crystal ball faded, and Yusuke was left alone.

Koenma was fascinated by the situation. It was no use explaining the
situation further because Yusuke wouldn’t remember the explanation, or
being Yusuke for that matter. She would think she is Keiko but have
Yusukes spirit. Even Koenma didn’t understand what this means. Some
people are defined by their experiences yet they react to those experiences
based on what’s in their souls. That which truly defines us remains even
through reincarnation, but what truly defines us. In other words would she
act like a responsible polite Keiko or an irresponsible violent Yusuke?

Keiko went off with Botan who was trying to help her cope with being a
ghost for a month.

Meanwhile, Yusuke was pissed as usual. She didn’t know what was going
to happen, except that she was stuck as Keiko, and may start acting girly in
just a few minutes.

No way she thought. I’m to tuff to start acting girly, so it won’t happen.

Wanting something tangible to help hold on to her true identity, she grabbed
a piece of paper and started writing Yusuke Urumeshi. She then looked at
the paper and read Mrs Yusuke Urumeshi, which had a heart around it.

Eeew! Gross she thought. I might be in trouble she mused as she lied down
of Keikos cluttered bed and passed out.

Several hours later Koenma was ready to observe the ultimate test of nature
versus nurture. By now Yusukes memories were completely transformed.
Would Keikos nurturing determine the behaviour of this mixed being, or
Yusukes nature?

Keiko’s mother knocked on the door and softly and called Keiko to wake up.

The new Keiko didn’t even stir. Her mother called louder and shook her and
yelled but Keiko/Y remained asleep. Finally her mother said breakfast was
ready and she snapped awake.

Yusukes sleeping habits. That’s One point for nature.

Though Keiko/Y chose feminine clothes to wear, she didn’t even consider
wearing her school uniform.

That’s two points for nature.

She wolfed down her breakfast in less than three minutes.

Three points for nature.

She spent an hour fixing her hair. Koenma was considering giving a point to
nurture for this, but knowing Yusuke better the ghost Keiko insisted this was
a point for nature.

Finally, she left for school; but only walked half the distance then turned and
went to the arcade.

Nature was definitely winning.

The true Keiko worried. What the heck is that dope going to do next?

Keiko/Y felt more carefree then ever. Thinking she really was Keiko meant
she no longer carried the burden of spirit detective’s responsibilities. Yet
she still felt the spiritual power inside her. The overall effect was quite
uplifting.

There was a certain excitement in blowing off school since she couldn’t
remember having done it before. Keiko/Y was also looking for a fight to get
into. After all her dope of a boyfriend does it all the time.

Hey, isn’t that Keiko playing Metroid, a girl remarked from across the room.

Skipping school, that yakuza boyfriend of hers is starting to corrupt her,
another commented.

Suddenly the wall right next to her head exploded. Soon the dust cleared to
reveal Keiko/Y’s fist. She had crossed the room and punched the wall faster
than the speed of sight.

Did you say something about my boyfriend, Keiko/Y replied?

Authors Notes:

Okay first of all, I don’t hate Yusuke or Keiko as the story might suggest;
but I don’t mind making them suffer a little.

Next, I want feedback and suggestions. I don’t know where I’m going with
this story but I’m hoping your reviews will inspire me. Put reviews on the
mediaminer page, or send them to ataru85@uymail.com.

If I don’t get feedback I won’t even write the next chapter. In your reviews
please give whatever suggestions you can think of for the following:

What should Keiko/Y experience?
What Should I do to her?
Should this be a comedy, romance, action, or hentai story?
Which other YYH characters should I use?
What is the one true faith? (buddism, shinto, Tsunami the first tree of Jirai,
Belldandy, etc…)
