Chapter 8: Signs and Summonings
About four days later…
Sakura blossoms floated through the air as the Reikai Tentai and his friends walked down one of the sidewalks of the city in which Yusuke lived. There was an uncomfortable silence that laced around them, but none made any move to break it. A blossom floated down, as if it were attracted to the four, and landed in Kurama's open palm.
"Maybe it's a sign…" He muttered softly. Though, no matter how soft he spoke, it still shattered the silence around them.
The petal was bright pink, sending a stab through Kurama's heart at the reminder of the girl. He could see her in his mind's eyes. She looked so… innocent, carefree, peaceful even, as she walked down the halls of school in her red girls uniform and talking to his so-called rival, Yu Kaitou.
That thought made him growl slightly. Sakura always did seem close with Kaitou, something Kurama always tried to overlook.
// Flashback //
"Konichiwa Sakura." Sakura whirled around, her skirt rising slightly, to find herself face to face with Yu Kaitou.
"Konichiwa Yu, how are you?" She threw her arms around the boy, pulling him into a friendly embrace.
Kaitou wrapped his arms around her waist and hugged her in return. "Wonderful now. You?"
"Same as you." She could hear her friends giggle at what transpired.
"So, did you neglect to tell us you're a taken girl?" Kaya asked in a playful taunting tone.
Sakura let go of Kaitou and took a step back. She whirled on her three friends, causing her skirt to raise again. "Nani!?"
"Well, you two always did look tight…" Nami agreed.
"And you guys are on a first name basis… People do think you two are dating." Akari remarked.
Both Sakura and Kaitou just turned bright red. Kaitou looked to the floor, embarrassed. He wasn't used to dealing with these things.
Towards the back of the room sat Kurama, growling slightly at the scene before him. The fangirls that stood near him took a few steps back as he growled louder. One of them finally realized now was not a good time to be trying to win Shuichi's affections, so she dragged the other two away.
Kurama didn't even realize they were gone until Yoko spoke to him.
Well Little one, it appears we have competition. But at least we got a nice view…
Kurama blinked then brought his hand to his face and rubbed his temples. Kaitou is not competition; he's my rival, my school rival. And keep your hentai thoughts to yourself…
Ah, but you were thinking them as well… Kurama's silence caused Yoko to laugh.
// End Flashback //
"Something on your mind, Kitsune?" Hiei asked glancing at Kurama's now closed hand.
"More like someone, Hiei." Yusuke said, no humor or sarcasm in his voice.
"I think we all have Sakura on our minds…" Kuwabara quipped. Kurama just nodded in agreement.
/You miss her, don't you. / Hiei's voice filled Kurama's ears and head.
/Why do you ask questions you already know the answers to? /
/Hn. It wasn't a question. / Kurama had realized that, but decided not to comment further.
A young girl stood in the middle of the sidewalk, nearly staring down the four boys heading her way. She smiled lightly as if she was happy to see them.
"Konichiwa, Hiei-sama and Kurama-san." She bowed.
"Konichiwa, er…" Kurama spoke, returning her smile while Hiei decided to remain silent.
"Aya, I am Mukuro's personal servant. I have been asked by Mukuro-sama to deliver these to the two of you." Kurama took a good look at the girl as he took his letter. She reminded him of someone, but who he wasn't sure…
Little one, she looks like… Kuroune. Kurama's eyes made him appear to have been struck by lightning. She did resemble the bat youkai Yoko had known so long ago…
"Kurama-san? What is it?" Aya asked. She seemed concerned.
She does… Kurama told Yoko before looking back to the girl. "Nothing, Aya."
"I need you to read them now. My master awaits a response." Both Hiei and Kurama opened the letters, took one look, and switched. Yusuke and Kuwabara laughed at this.
Hiei,
By writing this to you, I am giving you a formal summons. I require your presence at my palace by nightfall. Do you remember the society I told you of? The Circle of the Black Rose? There will be a meeting tonight, and I wish it of my heir to meet the other members because you will be taking my place someday. Bring a companion with you if that is at all possible. Come quickly. The password will be told to you by Aya, that is why she's still there.
-Mukuro
Kurama,
By sending this letter to you, I am summoning you to my side. I request it of you to be present at a meeting I must attend tonight. I believe you know your way to Mukuro's palace. Her servant, Aya I believe, will tell you the password to the meeting. I also request you bring a companion, if you are able to do so, and that you come as Yoko. I believe it best if you show yourself as a youkai not a ningen.
-Yomi
"A little formal, don't you think Hiei?" Kurama said folding up his letter.
"Hai." Was Hiei's response as, he too, folded his letter and put it away.
"Will you attend?" Aya asked, her hair blowing around her in the gentle breeze.
"Hai." Both said in unison.
"The password is: `There is no phoenix from these ashes, there is no peace for me.' I would advise you depart quickly, as to arrive early. I believe Mukuro-sama and Yomi-sama wish to speak with you beforehand." Aya smiled again then, in the blink of an eye, was gone.
"Kurama, Hiei. What the Hell was that all about?" Yusuke asked a few moments later.
"We've been summoned by Mukuro and Yomi. Our presence is required with them." Hiei said in a very business-like tone.
"Yusuke, I believe you will be required to attend as well. You should be receiving a summons soon." Kurama spoke with heaviness in his voice none of the others had ever heard.
"You alright Kurama?" Kuwabara asked.
"Hai, I'm fine. Hiei, care to tell me if it's required of you to bring a `companion' as well?"
"Hn." Hiei responded.
"Well, I'll be going alone, and as Yoko. Yomi thinks it best for me to be introduced at this meeting of his as a youkai and not a ningen." Kurama handed his letter to Yusuke, whom he could tell was going to ask too many questions, before continuing to walk down the sidewalk.
"This is just the way to get Sakura!" Yusuke exclaimed after reading the letters.
"Nani?" Kurama stopped and turned to face Yusuke.
"Ya, the Shrimp's letter says it's a meeting of the Circle of the Black Rose." Kuwabara replied, handing Kurama his letter. Hiei growled.
"Oh… well then, it seems your right Yusuke." Kurama turned to Kuwa next. "Kuwabara, I'm sorry but you won't be able to come along."
"Why not?!"
"Because, baka, you'd stick out too much. A palace full of youkai and apparitions… it's hard to hide a ningen that smells as bad as you." Hiei snapped, getting even for the `shrimp' remark earlier.
"Lay off, half-pint!"
"Cool it!" Yusuke shouted, ending the small argument. For now...

"Mukuro, I have my little… plan ready." Sakura's voice was playful and mysterious; not a good combination when coming from her.
Mukuro turned to look at Sakura, only to have her voice catch in her throat. All she could do was cough.
"I take it you like my outfit."
Sakura stood there in what Hiei had officially dubbed her `seductress uniform' many a year ago. It was a mini-skirt with bloomers, a tight top that showed off her stomach and barely covered her chest, and slender shoes that wrapped around her ankle and calf. She was wrapped in what resembled a bath kimono. It was opened in the front as to show off her body. Amazingly enough, she was still able to fight in it.
"Like is an understatement. You do remember that Koormie are an all female race, right?" There was a mysterious glint in Mukuro's eyes.
Sakura laughed. "Of course I do, which will only serve to make tonight that much more interesting. Did we ever find out more about the third demon and his, or her, heir?"
Yomi sighed; not being able to see was frustrating at times. "Hai, his name was Raizen[1]."
"Is that all?" Sakura asked, frustrated.
"No, Raizen had taken a ningen as a mate. A young woman named Atsuko. They had one child. Sakura, that child's name is Yusuke. Urameshi Yusuke, age 15." Mukuro said, looking Sakura strait in the eyes.
"So now I really do have my choices, Yusuke or Kurama…" Sakura muttered.
"You're taking this quite well." Yomi commented.
"Hai, I know. That doesn't matter now. All that matters is I shall soon be in control of the third of the Makai that rightfully belongs to me."
"Sakura, are you sure you want to go through with this?" Mukuro asked, a bit of sorrow shining in her eyes.
"Hai. I have to."

"Yusuke-sama! Yusuke-sama!"
Yusuke whipped around only to find himself face-to-face with a young man. The boy seemed eager and happy.
"What do you want kid?" Yusuke growled slightly.
"I-I was sent to you to give you this…" The boy pulled out a letter then disappeared into thin air.
"Woah! What the Hell was that all about Urameshi?" Kuwabara asked.
"Let me read this and I'll know!"
"Yusuke, calm down please. It's your summoning." Kurama said, placing a hand on Yusuke's shoulder.
"Hn, looks like you were right yet again Fox." Hiei muttered. Kurama laughed.
"Was it that hard to tell me that I was right?" He was responded with a glare. Kurama just laughed more.
"Well, it looks like I need to show up for my placeholder. Good, we can bring Sakura back together. Well, with the exception of Kuwabaka over here." Yusuke said jabbing his thumb in Kuwa's direction.
"Hey, lay off Uramesh-" Kuwabara was cut off mid-sentence by his cell phone - Kurama and Yusuke had one as well. "Moshi moshi, Kazuma Kuwa- Oh, hey sis."
"Shizuru will have him busy for a while…" Kurama announced.
"I guess we better get going. Casual dress?" Yusuke asked, that sarcastic grin of his dressing his face once more.
"Hiei I know will dress as usual, so you might as well Yusuke."
"Good, I'll meet you two back here in about an hour. I gotta tell Keiko…" Yusuke began to walk off.
"Why is it that you need to tell Yukimora-san of your whereabouts?" Kurama asked in a slightly teasing tone.
"Yukimora-san will kick his ass if he doesn't, that's why!" Everyone, including Kuwabara, turned to see Keiko stomping up the sidewalk. "Yusuke, where were you today? You said you were just going to Kurama's for a little while! You have a test Monday!"
"Heh, heh…" Was all Yusuke could muster to say to his enraged girlfriend.
"You really are whipped, aren't you." Hiei said, looking to Yusuke, with a sneer on his face.
"No, I ain't datin' Kurama." Yusuke laughed as Kurama choked on the air he had been breathing.
Keiko popped Yusuke upside the head. "That's not funny! And stop ignoring me!"
"Gomen Keiko…"
"What was that suppose to mean Yusuke?!" Kurama asked once he was able to breathe again.
"Nothin', nothin'… coughcoughdominatrixkitsunecough." Yusuke patted his chest as if he'd had a real coughing fit. Even Hiei had to chuckle at that.
"That is far from being me… Yoko, maybe. But me? No." Kurama said, his cool demeanor returning once more.
I resent that… That was only with Kuroune, and it was a one-time thing. Hiei and Kurama both choked on the air they were breathing this time, seeing as they were the only ones to hear.
"Daijobu?" Keiko asked the two youkai.
"Daijobu…" Kurama said after composing himself again.
"Right… I'll see you two in an hour…" Yusuke walked off, Keiko following after as she yelled at him.

[1]- Okay, I'm not 100% sure on this one, but that is Yusuke's father from the series. I'm just not too sure if it's his dad or his grandfather or what…
