Chapter 16
Itsumaru, the Shape Shifter Snake Youkai
“Neko-kun, no stop!” Yamakaza heard her brother cry out as two pairs of feet ran up the stairs just as she put on her shirt of her uniform.
“Why not?” she heard Neko ask before knocking on her door. “Yama-chan!”
“Neko-kun, don't!”
“What is it?” she asked as she opened her door.
“Look what I found!” Neko said as he smiled triumphantly when he held up a garden snake.
She looked at it and became stiff as a board before she screamed while jumping across her room away from the snake. She yelled at the top of her lungs, “Keep that away from me!”
“What?”
“Neko-kun I tried to tell you,” Kichiro told him as he tugged on his sleeve, “Yama-chan's afraid of snakes.”
“ . . . I'll go put this back where I found it now,” as he sulked away.
When Yamakaza finally came down she heard Kichiro tell Neko, “That's why Yama-chan's afraid of snakes.”
“Harsh,” Neko said as he ate his rice.
Suddenly he was smacked in the face by Yamakaza school bag when it fell into his lap she threw his uniform at him, “I'm done with your uniform! Now put it on!”
“Now you got her in a bad mood. At least it's not has bad as the year of the snake six years ago.”
“Am I going to get this all day long?”
“Everyone is except for me,” as he smiled.
“Lucky you.”
Once at school Yamakaza was practically giving everyone the cold shoulder exceptionally Neko. It was around first period when Opal started to ask questions to Yamakaza and got a fist in her stomach for it. Instead of stopping she went to Neko at second period and nagged him until he yelled, “I showed her a snake by accident!”
“Ew!” she cried.
Kurama came up to him and asked, “Did you say snake?”
“Yeah, why?” as he looked at him.
“Snakes in Japan can only mean that there's a snake youkai around.”
`He's right, most snakes that are seen in Japan only answer to snake youkais it was like that back then too.'
Screams filled the hallway as everyone heard Yamakaza scream, “Snakes!”
Kurama and Neko were up and running down the hallway before anyone else could blink. When they entered the room Yamakaza was in all the students and the teacher were on top of their desks trying to stay away from the snakes that covered the ground. Yamakaza was holding onto Izu as most of the snakes gathered towards them. Neko looked at Kurama silently asking him if they should use their powers and he nodded.
Neko jumped across the room to Yamakaza and Izu when he landed he used his Strike Claws on the snakes. “Izu give her to me, I have an idea.”
Izu nodded and helped place Yamakaza on Neko's back. When he jumped through the door he saw he was right, the snakes had been ordered to go after Yamakaza. “Kurama-kun! Izu-kun! Follow me! They're going after Yamakaza-san!” he yelled over his shoulder.
He suddenly sensed a youkais' presence but before he could look someone punched him across his right cheek. He had to let go of Yamakaza in fear he might crush her underneath him as they tumbled onto the ground. Yamakaza sat up after she came to a stop she looked around. Someone suddenly stood in front of her he was wearing jika-tabi, kusarikatabira, and the breast plate and the waist plates of a toseigusoku. She began to tremble as she heard his voice, “Well, well, if it isssn't Yamakaza-sssama. It'sss ssso good to sssee you.”
“S-stay away from m-me,” she said shakily as she began to back away as she slowly looked up from the ground.
“Don't tell me you're afraid of me,” he asked with fake concern.
“N-neko-kun . . .”
“Stay away from her,” they heard Neko as he summoned his katana.
“What do you know, the pathetic hanyou isss ssstill alive,” said the youkai.
Izu and Kurama came up behind Neko and Izu stood the stunned when he saw the youkai. He suddenly asked, “Itsumaru?”
“It ssseemsss you know me,” Itsumaru said as he turned to them not noticing Opal going to Yamakaza. “But I don't know you.”
“It's me, Izu, from your circus.”
He began to laugh at him and said, “Why would I remember you? You pathetic yoko!”
“I won't let you talk to Izu like!” Neko exclaimed as he ran at ready to strike him.
The youkai jumped out of the way as Neko brought his katana down so he would hit Opal and Yamakaza. Before the katana was a centimeter for their heads it forcibly stopped and Neko sighed in relief. He told Opal, “Opal-san, get Yamakaza-san out of here. She's no good to us right now because of her fear.”
“Lightning,” they suddenly heard someone yell from above, “Daggers!”
Lightning struck the ground where Itsumaru was standing but he shape shifted into a rock. A western in an Air Force uniform landed in front of Neko as he held lightning in between his hands.
“Steve-kun . . .” Yamakaza said softly.
“I came to see how you were doing I guess you've been having lots of fun,” he said as a joke while still facing Itsumaru.
Out of nowhere a snake went through Neko's stomach like an arrow. His eyes dilated as pain reached his nerves and he struggled to stay upright while he pulled the snake out. Suddenly the air around them became ice cold and Itsumaru was force to take his originally form. Steve was force to step back towards Neko as Izu and Kurama took shelter behind a tree. The ice swirled around the between them and an Ice Wolf yasha appeared in center of the ice.
“I won't let you hurt, Ne-chan,” the woman told Itsumaru.
“I don't want hurt him,” Itsumaru told her, “I want to kill him!”
“Then . . . you die!” as she ran at him with her claws and teeth showing.
Kurama and Izu came running over to them as the two youkais fought each other. Kurama quickly made an ointment to neutralize the poison of the snake for Neko. Izu knelt down beside Neko and asked, “Do you know her?”
“I don't remember but I do know we can trust her,” Neko told them as he gasped in pain.
The wolf yasha came back over to them and said, “The youkai got away.”
“That sucks!” Opal cried.
“Ne-chan!” the woman pushed Kurama away and wrapped her arms around Neko's shoulders not noticing his confused and panicked look. “I'm so glad you're alive!”
“P-please let g-go of . . . me . . .”
“Huh?” she straightened up and looked him.
“Maybe we should talk about this at the house without the presence of ningens,” Kurama told them.
“You guys go ahead,” Steve told them, “I'll take care of them.”
Once at the house Kudaku was trying to calm Yamakaza down before she got an asthma attack. They talked while they waited for Steve to get to the house as Neko tried to avoid Mitsuki's affectionate hugs. As Steve walked in Neko was about to move to the floor away from Mitsuki when she pressed a point on his back making him change into his cat form. She said mostly to herself, “Your weak point is still the same.”
Neko changed back and calmly demanded sounding irritated, “How do you know that?”
“Like I said before I looked after you while you were on your own.”
“Opal stay away from me!” he said as he turned and grabbed her hand.
“Aw man!” as she yanked her hand away.
Steve walked into the living room and asked, “What did I miss?”
“Well-” Kurama started before Opal cut him off.
Opal jumped in front of him asked, “You know how to use lightning?”
“Yes,” he answered nervously as he looked at her weird.
“Teach me!”
“Well, it's kind of hard and I only have a few weeks here,” as he commanded lightning to fill his hand. “And-”
Opal yelped as the lightning suddenly jumped from his hand and hit her in the head.
“-if you're water you can't really control it,” he finished.
“Well, back to the problem of this Itsumaru-kun,” Neko said ignoring the fact that Opal might've received damage to her brain. “Izu-kun you seem to know him but he doesn't know him.”
Izu was uncharacteristically silent and sad since they got to the house. He sighed and said, “Itsumaru-kun was the man who saved me from a youkai gang. He ran a traveling youkai circus; he was the nicest youkai I have ever met. He couldn't control snakes or ever harm anyone unless they attacked someone helpless. So whoever this youkai is he's not the Itsumaru-kun I know.”
“So whoever this youkai is not the real Itsumaru,” Kurama said, “Yet he looks like him and he's after Yamakaza.”
“He also as a huge advantage over Yamakaza,” Neko told them. “I don't think there's much we can do until he shows himself again.”
“We'll just have to be on guard at all times.”
“Neko-youkai-kun! I knew it!” they suddenly heard Opal as she stood up and pointed her finger at Neko. “I can't believe Yamakaza-kun has done this to me! I've been looking for you so I can help you prove you're innocent!”
“You want me to bite your finger off and I already have enough people helping me.”
“Hey wait a minute! You ignored me when I was hit in the head!”
“Why would I care about that? We have more important things to worry about!”
“I'll see you all later,” said Mitsuki as she got up and left.
“Bye,” Kurama answered before he turned back to the two cat youkai as they began to fight.
