Prelude to Girl of Eternal Suffering
Episode 1
“Surrender Her Soul”
Hiei was so worn out and thoroughly grossed out. He was hoping to see something to jump on that baka Kuwabara for-but he had only followed him and Yukina around the Mall (isn't that-? Ya that's what Kurama had called it!) to watch Kuwabaka buy her candy and flowers.
Agh! It made him want to puke!
“Yukina-chan…” Kuwabara said, taking the Ice Maiden's hand in his own.
Hiei's eyes narrowed and his fists tightened.
“There is something that I must ask you Yukina-chan,” Kuwabara said softly and passionately kneeling before her on one knee.
Hiei stood up abruptly from where he observed in the shadows as Kuwabara reached for the top hat he wore. He readied himself to pounce on Kuwabara.
He is NOT doing what I think he is!!! Hiei thought his blood boiling.
And at the drop of Kuwabara's hat Hiei had slammed him on the ground- his fist pulled back ready to deal him some Shi.
“Hiei-san?” Hiei heard Yukina's startled voice from his right.
He hesitated, momentarily distracted.
“You little shrimp!!” Kuwabara shrieked furiously trying to wrestle the preoccupied Hiei off of him.
Hiei jumped up disregarding the enraged ningen scrambling clumsily to his feet.
“I'll knock you into next week you-!!!”
Hiei stepped aside smoothly and effortlessly letting one of Kuwabara's sluggish puny blows fly by him. Kuwabaka stumbled and fell face first into the ground.
“Kazuma-kun!” Yukina gasped rushing to the ningen's side
“Hn.” Hiei smirked.
“He's unconscious!” Yukina realized, shocked.
That's what you get you stupid ningen…
Yukina got up quietly and turned to Hiei. She hesitated a bit then with her hands clasped and big, hopeful eyes, asked the question that Hiei knew she would. “Have you found my brother yet, Hiei-san?”
And Hiei answered as he always had “I-iie. Gomen, Yukina.” He shoved his hands in his tunic and turned away, unable to take the look of disappointment he knew was reflected in her eyes and tried to maintain a look of indifference on his face. “But I'll keep looking… I promise, Yukina-kun.” He added, hoping it would ease the pain inside both of them. Some how. Some way.
“OK… arigato, Hiei-san…” She smiled then, able to push her grief out of mind. She could see his discomfort and sorrow behind the eyes he tried to conceal. But not only could she see it- somehow she felt, welling within her what she knew Hiei was feeling at that very moment. She couldn't explain it-she never could. She had always had keen senses when she was within his presence. She didn't know how but she often knew he was there… when he was angry or sad but she believed that maybe some strange fate had bound them together. Maybe they were meant to find one another. Maybe he would be able to find her brother.
She also wondered about Hiei's feelings towards her a lot. He sure did seem to care about her. For about the 400th time she counted off all the wonderful things Hiei had done for her. All the things she owed him for. He always protected her. Always. He had come to save her from Tarukane. That was something she would be indebted to him for, forever. Then at the dark tournament, when Yuusuke's fight with the younger Togurou had been finished, he saved her from the crashing wall that nearly took her life, as Kazuma couldn't reach her in time. He also had said he had gone looking for her oniisan, and she was extremely grateful for everything Hiei had done for her. She wondered that perhaps he shared similar feelings for her or if he was just being kind. She knew he had the deepest of loyalties to his friends. Perhaps he considered her a friend. That would be enough to explain his actions, right?
She also often entertained the thought of jealousy between Kazuma and Hiei. How else could she explain their strange behavior around her? Every time Kazuma had found time for them to be alone together, every time Kazuma had tried to be romantic with her, Hiei was there, ready to lay him out. She didn't like the thought of them fighting but they always did and it was always because of her. She often even felt guilty about it. Yukina smiled, softly, at the thoughts.
It was these thoughts that kept her comforted day in and day out. She understood the fact that she may never be able to find her brother, so such comical and soul-warming things kept her from a total breakdown. She wondered if Hiei really knew how much she truly cherished his aid.
She looked at Hiei “umm… Hiei-san?”
“Hn?”
“You really don't know how much this means to me! Your looking for my brother, that is. I really, really appreciate it, Hiei-san.” Yukina smiled sweetly.
Something wrenched at Hiei's insides. He brushed his feelings aside with his hand, took one last glance at his beautiful twin and flashed away.
~*~*~
The black-haired fire-youkai rested at the top of the mall, his feet dangling over the rooftop without movement, thinking of the young ice maiden that he watched over at that very moment.
The girl giggled at one of Kuwabara's foolish antics. It had been several hours since he had awoken from the fall that resulted from his stupidity and brutality. The earlier events seem to have been forgotten. Well at least Hiei hoped that Yukina could stop worrying about her brother, even after the disappointing news he had brought to her some three or four hours ago. However, his worries were quickly washed away at the sweet, broad smile that graced her gorgeous face. Hiei felt his own face breaking into a smile. Not even a smirk or mocking grin. A genuine smile.
Hiei thought that maybe Kuwabara wasn't all that bad. Even though Kuwabara seemed to purposely push Hiei to his limits, the ningen brute seemed much more gentle and caring around Yukina. And when the matter came to Yukina Hiei knew Kuwabara would go to the ends of the earth to protect or please her. When these things occurred to him he actually felt a little sorry for all the times he had knocked the idiot out because of Yukina. He guessed Kuwabara really did mean well.
Suddenly there came similar to that of high-speed winds but Hiei felt nothing of the sort. That sound was immediately followed by the thud of exaggerated footsteps behind Hiei. He started and looked around to see a large hulking demon standing confidently, holding a small clear orb in his hand, some 20 feet behind him.
The demon was clad in black from head to foot and a hood concealed his face. Black oily and feathered wings stretched out from his massive form and his feathered limbs were so long that Hiei could only guess at a rough 10-foot wingspan.
The fire demon was on his feet at once directly in front of the demon with a hand on his katana.
“Calm yourself you foolish Hi-Youkai! I wouldn't be so hasty if were you”
“Oh… ya?”
The demon nodded jerking his head in an indicating fashion to the orb. “Would you be so willing to attack me as to sacrifice your dear twin's life?” he said mockingly
“What?” Hiei snorted.
“This” he indicated the orb again. “This is a little present I got from a dear friend of mine. The ever-reliable Master of Death, Yugure, was gracious enough to lend me some dark powers”
“What are you talking about? What is that thing?”
“This my friend is the essence of Yukina's soul. And it is my will to destroy her, or not!”
“Whatever” Hiei rolled his eyes.
“You don't believe me?”
“Hardly.”
“Then perhaps I can convince you otherwise…hm? Why don't you observe your dear sister for a moment…” with that the demon clenched the orb tightly and a sharp cry pierced Hiei's ears.
He whirled and rushed to the edge of the roof to find Yukina on her knees her hands pressed across her chest in pain. Kuwabara was at her side trying desperately to figure out the problem.
“Well now will you pay attention, Hiei? Or possibly even listen to my proposal?”
The small youkai turned back his eyes hot with rage. “What do you want?” he spat.
“Listen carefully for I will say this only once, you half-blood trash.” Hiei twitched “If you want Yukina to live you must retrieve some thing from me…”
“And what might that be?”
“Something that belongs to Yuusuke's wench, Keiko. Maybe a strand of hair or something that belongs to her that would have her DNA on it”
“Why?”
“That is my own business, not yours. Do this for me and I will put this orb in your possession so that you may protect it. You have exactly 3 days and at the end of 3 days bring it to me, Hiei.” He said in a mocking tone, chuckling lowly.
