Prologue
The crowd roared as the winner stood up from the pile of bodies and lifted her hands up to be acknowledged by the crowd. The ravenous bloodthirsty screams of "More Death! More Blood!" echoed from around the crowd. The winner's silhouette caught glow of the setting sun as the champion confidently walked towards the judges. Hiei's body lay there motionless. As the champion passed by, a piteous frown passed over the darkened face. A hand reached out and around it came a golden glow. "I'm sorry, friend." A quiet but serious voice said as it was just about to heal the fire demon, "I did not see you since the entrance. I did not see you when I used that attack. Forgive me." A judge grabbed the champion by the wrist and tugged at her arm, "Come, champion. Come and accept your prize from King Yama." The champion took a longing look back and sent a message saying, "Wait, my most worthy rival. A few more minutes of these trivial proceedings and I'll come back and make amends. I promise."
King Yama looked sternly as the champion walked in and refused to bow to the mighty king. "You, winner, you are a Guardian, are you not?" King Yama asked his voice booming and carrying to the far corners of the room where his servants knelt in fear. The champion's face still hidden by the shadows nodded in assent. "You are also a bounty hunter, thief and a mercenary hireling! You have stolen more than ten times the amount of priceless artifacts in my treasury! What do you have to say for yourself?" King Yama replied his voice shaking with rage. The champion did not reply and stood there motionless, unafraid. Suddenly in the silence that followed a clear voice replied, "The prize." The champion's hand reached out and stretched her fingers. "The prize! Ha ha ha! The prize! I actually had a back up prize in case you were killed but my hunches were correct. You did win. Now Hiei!" King Yama said laughing until tears began to form in his eyes.
The champion whirled around and saw Hiei grinning. "You rotten little bastard!" She shouted at Hiei. "So they tell me!" With that Hiei launched a peculiar dart that hit home before the champion could dodge. The drug worked fast and the champion slid to the floor. "Let's just see how well she does when we stick her in with our researchers. Finally we have a subject to use our energy blending theories on. And you Hiei…I owe you a reward. What shall it be?" King Yama asked as he stood gloating over his fallen adversary. "The Jagan. That's all." Hiei replied and picked up the unlucky champion's body and slung it over his shoulder. "You shall have it." King Yama replied grinning as Hiei walked into the darkness of the tunnel.
