Chapter 5

There were ancient stone steps that the foursome had not seen before. It was as if the stairs had opened on their own as soon as the stone felt the presence of the Spirit Detective and his companions.

"I wonder how far they go." Kuwabara said leaning over to look into the black voice beneath the stairs. "How about we kick you in and see?" Hiei replied. "Shut up, you little munchkin reject!" Kuwabara snapped irritably. "I suggest that we proceed as a team into the void." Kurama interjected before the twosome could continue their quarrel. "Of course. Let's get a move on. My ass is freezing out here." Yusuke grumbled.

As they stepped down the walls lit up with symbols that glowed blue even in the daylight. Kurama studied these markings as they walked and stated, "They are apparition markings. Many have faded. There are only a few readable ones." "Well, what does it say?" Kuwabara asked. "It says: please silence the orange haired buffoon." Hiei replied from the darkness. "Knock it off three eyes, or I'll cripple ya!" Kuwabara called.

The darkness seemed to swallow the small team up as they walked farther and farther down. Soon only the dim light of the apparition marks to light their way. As they walked Yusuke felt Kurama draw him back while the other's walked a little ways ahead. "Yusuke, may I speak of a matter regarding this pulse that has just come to my attention?" Kurama whispered making sure that the ones in front could not hear. "Sure. Spill." Yusuke replied shrugging. "What if I said that this pulse has always been here and that the reason why it felt so weak was because the building was on top of it and was scattering the energy signal?" Kurama breathed carefully into Yusuke's ear. "I'd say that it was impossible. This building was built more than a hundred years ago. Spirit World would have noticed it by now." Yusuke replied chuckling. "Yes, that may be true, but we received very little information on the pulse…too little. Spirit World must have files on it because such things do not go unchecked. Do you follow me?" Kurama led into the core of his idea. "You mean that some one wanted anyone to know about the pulse so they destroyed the information on it? Why?" Yusuke asked. "Perhaps…we must find out what is the maker of the pulse. Then we will be able to reason whether it is possible or not." Kurama replied. "Sounds solid. Let's keep going." Yusuke replied.

"Uh, Hiei, permit me a stupid question, but why did you come so fast. What did Botan give you to get you here?" Kuwabara asked timidly. "It wasn't what she offered…I had some business of my own to take care of…this case was on my way. The price was only a bonus." Hiei replied looking farther in the blackness. "Oh, so was the business important?" Kuwabara asked probing how far he could go with Hiei. "Nothing I couldn't handle myself!" Hiei replied bristling. "Oh, okay, man. I was just gonna say that…well, if you needed some extra help…I'm free." Kuwabara offered pushing his luck. "I can handle it, you buffoon! And what would ever make me think that I could use your help!" Hiei snapped irritably. "Chill out, small fry! In case you think I haven't noticed, you have been as edgy and nervous as a cat on a hot tin roof. You're ticked off about some stupid thing and I just wanted to help! Get with it, shrimp! This is the team again!" Kuwabara retorted. "Hn." Hiei mumbled and began to walk faster into the darkness below.

Yusuke had obviously heard the twosome arguing and smiled, "It's almost like old times…almost…" The darkness had completely engulfed the foursome and as they walked Yusuke began to lose track of how much time they had actually spent in the tunnel. It just seemed to stretch on and on. The Spirit Detective began to believe that the tunnel would just go on forever. However, he knew that the pulse would be at the end of the tunnel because with every step the pulse became more and more intense.

The ground leveled out abruptly. They had reached the last stair and now there was a cold black stone expanse with no light at all. Kurama clapped his hands and waited for the echo. "One, two three. The room is approximately twelve by twelve." Kurama said thoughtfully.

Kuwabara scoffed in the darkness, "Okay, whatever." Yusuke heard his heavy footsteps proudly tramp forward directly towards the pulse. "Wait, Kuwabara! We don't know what it is!" Kurama called. "Aw come on guys. It can't be that ba-" Kuwabara was cut off as he collided with something. Four small globes of light lit the front of the room showing what Kuwabara had collided with.
Kuwabara freaked out, "A DEAD BODY!!! YEAAAHHH!" He fell backwards down the three small steps leading up to a strange table like structure where the body lay. Everyone gasped. "A mummy!" Kuwabara screeched as he scrambled backwards. It was. A body completely covered in bandages from head to toe. But what even more interesting were slips of paper on top of the bandages that were glowing blue in the dim light. Kurama walked forward casually and looked at the markings on each of the slips, "They are seals of power, and seals of separation. Interesting. Something doesn't fit…" Yusuke stepped forward and noticed something peculiar, "If it's a corpse why was it locked into the table? Both it's wrists and ankles are cuffed into the table with more than one chain." "Curious…" Kurama replied looking at a glowing inscription on a stone tablet beneath the table. "What does it say?" Yusuke asked. "It says: `To the unknown one. May it sleep forever and never wake. The fool's trust led it to its fate. Take heed. Let the name never be spoken' A rather malevolent epitaph. It has more contempt than kindness. That only makes it more complicated." "They didn't even mention her name." Yusuke replied. "Her? How do you know it's a her?" Kuwabara asked. "Listen pal, after looking at girls for most of my life…I have a certain facility for realizing certain things about our mummy friend of here." Yusuke grinned wickedly. "You pervert." Kuwabara mumbled quickly ran behind the opposite side of table where it was still dark. He touched one of the cuffs and it flashed angrily.

The flash startled him and he lost his balance. As he tumbled backwards another glow of blue globes lit. "Kuwabara! Are you hurt?" Kurama asked and choked on the last syllable as he saw what Kuwabara had landed on. "Nah. I ain't hurt something soft caught my….YEAAAAH!" Kuwabara jumped up and nearly fainted, "ANOTHER DEAD BODY!"

"It fits!" Kurama thought excitedly. "They're exactly the same!" Yusuke replied after closely scrutinizing the new body. This new mummy had been chained to the wall where it had slumped down letting it's head fall forward on its chest. Kurama felt a surge of energy from the hand of the second body. He took a look at the seal on the second mummy's hand. The wetness of the strange tomb had rotted part of it away and now energy was leaking through. "Such a small hole and such a large pulse. Is that even possible?" Kurama thought. "What do you make of it Kurama?" Yusuke asked. Kurama stood up and cleared his throat, "Demon torture, Body and Soul Separation." "What is that?" Yusuke exclaimed. "A serious demon offer that is caught it subjected to torture on two fronts. Physical and Spiritual. Then if it really considered serious the soul and the body are kept separated for a set amount of time. Is this not correct Hiei? Hiei?" Kurama looked over at the fire apparition. Hiei's face was one of ill concealed shock. "Hiei? Are you alright?" Yusuke asked concernedly. Suddenly at the mention of the fire apparition's name the second body began to tremble. With a brilliant gold blast the second body completely dissolved and a gold mist flew into the air above the first body. It hovered there for a moment and then it flickered brightly. All at once all of the seals on the first mummy dissolved as if they had never been there. Then the gold mist poured into every pore of the first body.

Everyone watched in stunned silence as the mist dissipated. "Uh-oh…what did we do?" Kuwabara asked nervously edging towards the exit. "I think we should get the hell outta here!" Yusuke said. Before they could run for the exit, they saw the mummy's hand twitch and then snap the shackles around its wrists and ankles with no effort. Suddenly realizing it was free to move it sat up slowly. "King Yama will pay for that…" It mumbled in a hardly distinguishable voice. Then it noticed the four detectives and power shot up through the entire room as anger mixed into the power, "You four are the ones who freed me…I'm going to kill you!"
