I stopped in my tracks and fell to the ground panting. "Ryan, what's wrong?" Susan asked crouching down beside me, her blonde hair falling around her face.
I felt my lungs pinching and knew what was happening. I was having an asthma attack. I had mild asthma but never had an attack like this before, but I thought I knew how to handle it, just deep breaths.
I put my left hand on a nearby stump, fell to a knee and tried to control my erratical breathing. It seemed that the deeper breaths I took, the less air I was receiving. I went back to the sparatic breathing, but that wasn't working either. It seemed that however much air I was taking in, the less my lungs would receive it. Pain was searing over my body and I couldn't grasp was I was doing wrong. I couldn't support my weight any longer from the lack of air to my muscles. Painfully, my hand slipped from the chopped tree stump and my legs gave out. I landed on my right shoulder and rolled onto my back, staring with wincing eyes. My chest was heaving, but no air was getting through. My breaths started to become less and less.
"RYAN! Stop com'on. Stop it!" I was hearing Susan shout at me with worry in her voice, but then all audio ceased.
As I looked up at her I could see her body and face moving, but I couldn't hear anything she was saying. Her skin started to become pale as she watched me helplessly. I was hardly breathing now, and it pained me to think about what was maybe to come.
I looked up into the tree tops. Everything was so peaceful. There were sparkles of light where the sun was coming through the leaves. The trees seemed so much taller. They looked as if they were slow dancing with the wind, rocking back and forth. My raven black hair was whipping about my face as some fellow hikers heard Susan's cries. I could see the shock on their faces. I gave a faint smile when I saw a cute boy in the crowd. The people were touching me, putting their head on my chest. I was a little confused, but it tickled. I was taking breaths sparsely now and the lack of air was making me have a pleasant euphoria. I was feeling so good, the pain had subsided, but I was very weak. A tear trickled out of my ice blue eyes down the side of my face and fell to the forest floor. Everything became one blurry jumble and I ached for sweet surrender. My wish came soon and I exhaled my last breath.
I was encircled with darkness, spinning out of control. It was like a tunnel of black and I was being thrusted forward uncontrollably. I could hear cries of what seemed to be Susan and older men. "Come back, don't leave me!" "We need to get her to a hospital NOW" "Someone go get help. You help me carry her!"
A wave of exhaustion swept over my body again. I did not want to be in this world of black. I was spinning, falling, grasping for something solid. I was tumbling out of control in an abyss of fear. Which way was up or down, left or right? All sense of direction had been dried out of me. It didn't matter if I closed my eyes or not for either way it was dark, extremely dark, but I chose to keep them open for the chance of just maybe catching some color in the bleak universe. Free falling or floating in a black hole was what I was doing. How long would I stay like this? I tried calling out, but not even I heard my own cries. So tired was I. My eyelids had 100 lbs. weights on them, and it took a great amount of energy, which I didn't have, just to keep them half way open.
Just when giving up seemed like the only answer, a speck of light could be seen, what appeared to be, very close. I reached out for it only to find that it was further, much further away then I had estimated, but it was growing bigger, like I was being propelled to it. As it drew closer, it was the exit point for me. I was deathly tired by now and my eyelids were fluttering, but I fought with everything I had to keep them open, but that just wasn't enough. I was pulled through the exit and my face hit cool tile floor. I couldn't muster to keep my eyes open any longer, but I sensed there were beings very close, watching me. They were saying things, which in my weakened condition sounded incoherent, but I caught a couple words before I drifted off into a dreamless sleep. "She's awake" "She's the one" "What does that mean, sir" "She will do well then"...
When I woke up, the first thing I did was take a deep breath. It was so deep that it took nearly half a minute to fill my lungs. I was alive! The lighting was dim, and it took me awhile for my eyes to adjust. When they had come around, I took in my surroundings.
The room was huge. The walls were painted deep red and the carpet was a sharp white. There was a dresser and a full length mirror at the far wall. The door was open half way, and it led to a hallway. A small bed side table was beside the bed. I hadn't even noticed the bed. It was a king size. The white sheets were the finest silk and the matching white comforter was satin. I looked over to the window beside the bed and the sight took my breath away.
The curtain was pulled back and moon light filled the room, its silvery aura making a pool around me. There were three moons and two bright stars in an arranged order. A star was in between two moons. The moons were lined diagonally behind each other. The furthest moon was huge. It was so huge that I thought I could touch it. I reached my hand up and put it on the glass window. There was a forest below and I figured I was far up, like the 7th or 8th story. The trees, it seemed like, were bowing down to the moons, each one simultaneously bending, swaying, moving. An eerie feeling crept into the room as I felt I was being watched.
I whipped around and looked at the door. A boy with dark features and dark clothing was standing there with a slight smirk on his face. I opened my mouth slightly out of fear. The boy closed his eyes and nodded then left down the hall.
I started to feel uncomfortable about the door being open, and strangers looking through at me. I slid my feet out and over the side of the bed with ease. I stood up and to my surprise my backside felt like it was being weighted down with something. I strode over to the mirror. I was shaky with every step I took. The mirror was in front of me as I was walking closer towards it, but walking somehow felt easier, more graceful. I could see something white trailing behind me. I paused a couple of feet away from the mirror and reached around behind me. It felt like heaven between my fingers. Whatever it was, it felt good, so soft, so silky, and so magnificent. I turned sideways to get a gander at what this spectacular material was.
My eyes bulleted open, my jaw hit the floor and my hands automatically clasped around my mouth. Wings, beautiful crystal white angelic wings. Each feather neatly aligned in its place. Two giant wings that gracefully fell falling short of the floor by a couple of inches. They were attached firmly between my shoulder blades. My eyes ran up and down them, their beauty was unspeakable. Slowly my hands lowered from my face. My mouth closed and I turned so my back was facing the mirror. I turned my head as far as I could, gazing upon the wonders that were sprouted on my backside. I reached around and stroked one of the wings. It tickled and I couldn't help but let a small smile spread across my face, but soon the smile faded as I came back to reality.
My breathing became heavier and my eyes started shifting around. Where am I? Why am I here? Who was that boy at the door? Am I in trouble? What happened to me? Aren't I suppose to be dead? Where's Susan? Why do I have wings?
A million questions were running through my head. I started freaking out and whimpering came uncontrollably. I had never felt more alone in my life. I rushed towards the door and grabbed onto the frame and lowered myself out, looking around. The hall stretched for quite a ways. It was a pasty white color with about 5 doors on either side of the hall. I was reluctant to go out, but I couldn't stay in the room forever.
I stepped out into the hall; the wooden floor was cold against my bare feet. I walked as quietly as I could. My wings kept scraping the walls. At the end of the hall was a stair case going up and down and what seemed to be another door leading to another hallway. I decided to go down the stairs, maybe finding a door out of the building. My pace was slow and cautious going down the first couple flights of stairs until a door opened a half of a flight above me. Two guys walked out and spotted me immediately. Their mouths parted slightly and the one with fiery red, shoulder length hair and emerald green eyes regained his composure first.
"I see you're up. I am Kurama and this is Yusuke," he says pointing to the slightly shorter teenager with poorly greased back black hair and sharp facial expressions beside him who still had his mouth open. "Please, if you will come with us, we will show you to Koenma's office. He wishes to speak with you."
Kurama took a step down.
"We were just on our way to your room to see if you were okay."
Another step down.
"Please come with us." Now he was only four arms lengths away.
I started panicking wondering what his motives were, if he was telling the truth or not. He was unlike anyone I had ever seen before. He wasn't human. There just was something different about him. I started to step away from him. He didn't move, but held a sorrowful expression at what I was doing. The one named Yusuke started to come down the stairs towards me.
"Hey! What's the matter? We're not going to hurt you Missy! Koenma needs to talk with you, that's all. Just come with us." He stepped past Kurama not noticing his fault.
"No Yusuke!" Kurama shouted after him.
It was too late. I felt cornered like an animal. Fear flooded me and I fled.
"No Ryan! Please," one of them shouted after me.
I was flying down the stairs, literally. The wings glided down a flight then landed and I would turn to face the next flight, then glide down that. I did not mean for this to happen, but I guess it happened out of instinct. In the distance I could hear footsteps trailing behind me. I knew it was Kurama and Yusuke. I almost smashed into the wall for my lack of attention, but it seemed that my wings had a mind of their own and fluttered me to a halt. I opened a plain door that led me to an opening busy with people. Yet, they weren't people. They looked like...ogres. Like what you'd see in a fairy tale book. My head was spinning. Where was I?
I started slowly out, scanning the area for anything seriously dangerous. Dodging the ogres coming from every direction wasn't exactly easy with my wings. They paid no attention to me and I was very thankful for that, they had their own business to attend to.
I was in a huge lobby area it seemed, with doors and halls and corridors leading off every which way. Ahead of me I noticed two huge glass doors. I tried to walk casually over to them, but with my nerves, it was more of an awkward jog. To my surprise they wouldn't budge. I rattled them in frustration, when a voice caught me off guard.
"Excuse me Miss, but those are the "in" doors, the "exit" ones are over there."
I turned around to view the owner of the scruffy voice. He was powder blue with two slight spikes protruding from his forehead. Messy brown hair engulfed his head. He was bare chested but wore tight leather pants. He was one of the ogres.
His left arm was extended out pointing towards a pair of large wooden doors. A small grin spread across his face as he asked very shakily, "You're her aren't you?"
Not knowing what he meant by this my mouth dropped open a little and I started to shake my head. "I...I don't know what you mean."
His grin grew and it started to worry me. "Alright then, you will know soon enough. Go on with your business then."
And with that he turned around and disappeared through a hallway. Not waiting to talk to more people, or should I say ogres, I sprinted to the wooden doors. A nicely dressed ogre pushed the door open for me with ease. He smiled politely and said, "There you go Miss."
Not acknowledging him in any way, I rushed past to find myself still barricaded in. An enormous citadel surrounded the place. Guards with weapons stood lazily at the top some 3 or 4 stories up. I was running off of pure adrenaline now. I walked up to the massive doors. A small creature, I couldn't place what it was, asked me what I was doing.
"I want to get out."
"No one gets out of here unless you got a legitimate reason. Sorry Honey," the small creature said in a high pitched tone.
"Please let me out! I don't know where I am, I need to, please!" I though pleading was worth a try but it just got me snapped at.
"Listen lady, I don't know who you are telling me what to do. Now I told you NO! Now beat it!" the little imp says threatening me with a small stick.
I walked around the gigantic...house...hotel...business...what was it? Rounding a corner of the, building structure, I happened upon a small door. With a quick look around for spying eyes and none to be found I rushed greedily up to it. Luckily for me it was unlocked. The latch took some time lifting on the account of it was partially rusted. When it finally gave way, the little door creaked eerily. I pushed the door open and quickly scampered out and shut it behind me before anyone could find out what was happening. It was a snug fit for my wings to fit through and in a couple of areas they snagged on loose hanging rusted nails. A small whimper escaped from my lips but soon the feeling of being free cleared my mind. I stood for a few moments with my face buried into the backs of my hands while my palms were placed on the door and my knees were bent slightly. A smile rushed over me as I whispered repeatedly to myself.
"I'm free. I'm free. I'm free!"
A cool breeze tickled the back of my neck and urged me to turn around. I complied and took in the serene beauty of the area around me. There was about 100 yards of what it appeared to be freshly cut grass that led to an army of gigantic trees.
Without a moments hesitation I sprinted, with what seemed to be my life, for the sanctuary. Laughing hysterically as I ran, my foot slipped on the dewy grass and betrayed me as I came crashing down on my face.
"Damnit," was the last thing I was thinking before the "hounds" were let loose to chase me down.
"Look, there she is! Don't let her escape," a miniscule voice commanded at the top of the giant wall as I pushed myself up and turned over to sit. It was the midget at the front entrance. "Stop where you are, I command you! Those woods are not safe. You will be torn to shreds unprotected. Please Lady Day, come back!" the little runt was yelling.
How could he even think about me coming back?! I don't even know where the hell I am. That idiot, I'll show him whose boss. I thought.
With the multicolored array of ogres charging at me with what appeared to be some sort of weapon, I wasted no more time in escaping. Without intentionally acting, my wings propelled me off the ground and rushed me to the edge of the forest. The sweating ogres were left behind in my dust.
Squeezing through the initial line of trees wasn't at all easy. The trees were so closely planted together that it seemed more of a blockade then anything else: nothing goes in and nothing comes out. Shit.
"Ch, duh!" I said realizing an obvious key, slapping myself lightly on the forehead. "I can fly up to the canopy and lower myself in," I stated out loud, boasting about my momentary ignorance.
I wasn't entirely sure exactly how to fly on my own. Well, I guess I never really did. It was always my sub consciousness that got me to safety. With a deep breath I started backing up, beating my wings slightly to get the feel for it.
"Got cha!"
A scruffy voice echoed in my mind as once again my vision faded to black and pain sparked throughout my back.
