Chapter 1: Mission Neka
By: Traci
Walking into the night, she felt the warm tear she cried roll down her soft cheek. Nothing would help her now, everything had disappeared. Her life, her family, and her love were all gone. Vanishing into thin air, “Without a trace.” She whispered and stared up at the night sky of the Makai, wanting to remember what was going on in her life.
The half-witch, half-cat demon cried harder as the painful memory of him washed over her saddened mind and heart. Falling to her pale-skin knees, she buried her face into her hands and flattened down her black cat ears to the side of her blue-haired head. The black leather shoulder-strap bag containing her spell book fell to the ground with a thud, splashing water upon the depressed girl.
Why me? Why is this all happening to me?! She thought and, what seemed like, River Styx was running down her child-ish features rapidly.
Many years later…
Koenma waited as patiently as he could for his Spirit Detectives to arrive within the time window of 1.5 minutes he gave them. Tapping his chibi-fied finger on his desk noisily, the Spirit World Prince thought carefully about the consequences of throwing a tantrum. “Where the hell are they?” Koenma asked and as if on cue, Yusuke came tumbling in, followed by Kuwabara falling right on top of him.
“Kuwabara, get the hell off of me!” Yusuke yelled, chocolate-brown eyes filled with the natural furiousness of someone landing on him.
“Well if you didn't trip me, then I wouldn't be on top of you, Urameshi!” Kuwabara yelled while narrowing his small, black eyes as he shot up.
“Please, don't start another meaningless argument.” Kurama pleaded as he tried to separate the two street-brawling humans from pummeling each other.
“Urameshi started it!” Kuwabara yelled childishly.
“No I didn't! If YOU hadn't fallen on ME, then I wouldn't be ready to kick your ass!” Yusuke shouted angrily.
Koenma cleared his throat loudly, making the three look up from the commotion happening among themselves.
“Before I get started, where's Hiei?” Koenma asked.
“What? No lecture, no yelling, no scolding? Damn Koenma, are you feelin alright?” Yusuke asked.
Koenma sweat-dropped, “Yes Yusuke, I'm feeling just fine. The case I'm about to put you idiots on is very important. Therefore, I need Hiei with you.”
“Koenma, sire, you know how Hiei is! It'll take us forever to find him now that he's no longer on probation!” Kurama pointed out, his emerald eyes keeping their earnest truth as they always did.
“What about those detective things of Yusuke's?” Koenma asked.
“He can just manipulate them.” Kurama replied.
“Can you track his Spirit Energy?”
“Afraid not.”
“What about the Makai?”
“You do realize how big the Makai is, correct?”
“When did I put him off probation?”
“Actually…you never did. He quit being `probated'.”
“How can you `quit' being on probation?” Yusuke piped up.
“Well, it is Hiei we're taking about.” Kurama replied.
“This is why I made him stay in Yusuke's city, so that when ever a case like this popped up, I wouldn't have to track him down.” Koenma admitted and rested his cheek onto his hand, which was propped up by his arm.
“Track who down?” a monotone voice asked. The three Spirit Detectives and Koenma looked up to see Hiei walking in calmly, crimson eyes emotionless.
“You.” Kurama replied with a smile.
“Hiei, why did you quit being on probation?” Koenma asked.
“It got boring. You don't get to fight in such dull human cities.” Hiei replied, his tone staying the same. Koenma sighed and pressed a button on his desk.
“You're mission includes real detective work this time. This girl has gone missing…again. Your job is to find her, her kidnapper, and convince her to join the team.” Koenma announced as the large black screen slowly came down. “Her name is Neka, a cat-demon halfling.” He added.
That name sounds annoyingly familiar. Hiei thought and just continued to show no change in feelings as Koenma brought up the mug shots of the victim.
“So she's half-human?” Yusuke asked.
“Half-witch. The book she carries is full of powerful spells that only the greatest of Witches and Wizards can handle.” Koenma replied and Neka's picture flashed on the screen. The boys gaped at the drop-dead beauty.
Her light-brown eyes were sparkling with the unseen moonlight as her blue hair had been, apparently, waving in the wind. The black cat ears, tail, tiny whiskers, and the almond-shape her eyes were made her seem extremely cat-like; in the picture she was wearing a tight midnight-blue kimono while clutching a black leather bag and sitting side-saddle on a broom. She had the perfect body and features any girl would die for.
After more observation of the lovely maiden, Hiei figured out who she was, and so did Kurama.
