Chapter 2
Recovering

Hiei easily decided not to leave the Fox's side until he is fully recovered, it's the execution that is giving him problems. He paces the room impatiently as Kurama sleeps, careful not to make any noise least he wake his partner. He feels a need to both check on Yukina and stay by Kurama. Two days since the last time he'd checked on her, the Jagan tells him that she is experiencing increased anxiety but is in no physical danger. Hiei wants to sooth his sister, but cannot bring himself to leave Kurama.

The last time he left Kurama alone, he had that wierd, rather disturbing dream. It must have been very realistic to have unsettled the Fox so much for there to be signs of it. Normally all real emotion is carefully hidden by those damned masks of his. To see that slight crack was almost enough to...

Hiei stops that train of thought at once and forces it onto another, settling himself carefully against the wall. He tries to think about Yukina and reassure himself that her Father would take care of her. He idly fingers the tear gem at his neck. Yukina had been upset that he didn't give Meiyo his, but the man had smiled and told Hiei that he didn't want it until Hiei was ready to give it to him.

Kurama shifts slightly is his sleep and Hiei's senses instantly snap back. Nothing seems out of the ordinary and he wills himself to withdraw once more, but this time he isn't nearly as successful. The image of Kurama sitting up in a sweaty panic is enough to unsettle Hiei; he can't get it out of his head. It replays over and over and over again. Along with Kurama's all to accurate words...

"In a dream you are at the mercy of that dream. The dream does what it wants to; without any regard for what you want."

Why would Kurama dream about hurting him? Even when Kurama had 'betrayed' him; the Fox had taken a blow not dealt one, causing only a minor irritation to his Jagan while being impaled on his sword. The idea of his partner attacking him is simply one that he doesn't want to think about, and yet there it is; replaying over and over and over. Perhaps he should see it from the other point; the Fox was shocked and horrified at the idea of attacking him, not embracing. One strange dream couldn't erase all the trust that Kurama had earned over the years. His reaction should be quite telling, showing that rare glimpse of emotion at the very idea...

Hiei smirks to himself and settles down closer to the wall. Suddenly feeling tired, he leans against it and closes his eyes; drifting slowly off to sleep. He misses Kurama's expression going from peaceful to tense.

***
The trees are tall and vaguely familiar to him. He feels as though he's walked through here before, and knows that he probably has at one time or another. No, not one time, many times. These are the trees just outside of Gandarra. He has passed them thousands of times, jumping back and fourth between worlds.

Once more he finds himself tracking someone. Silently slipping through the trees in his silvery Yoko form. He cannot remember changing, or why he is here.

His panic starts to rise, then he notices the shadow following him in the trees. Hiei is hunting with him, not as his target. Kurama relaxes as the fire demon hops down next to him with grim determination on his face. Yoko turns his attention back to the task at hand, tracking the pervasive scent here. Probably an intruder on Yomi's lands. Most likely powerful if Yomi had sent him instead of the normal border patrol. That doesn't explain Hiei's presence however.

They reach a clearing, soft blades of grass creating a harmonic hum in the air. The warm glow of the mid-day sun creating shadows amongst the trees. The field is bright and smells of earth and grass. Yoko shifts excitedly, one of his favorite areas to relax in. But now is not the time.

Yomi is training with Shura in the middle of the field. Carefully instructing him on his sword form. He must have stayed off their trip a little longer, waiting for Kurama to recover and meet with him before returning to Shura's journey. Pride rises quickly in his chest to see how greatly the young man has improved. Watching Yomi and Shura train gives him a warm feeling of accomplishment.

Yomi stands up very straight and blocks Shura from their view.

"I know you are there. Come out." Kurama and Hiei don't move, strange thing... why are they trying to sneak up on Yomi? They should know that is nearly impossible.

"I said come out!" Yomi's tone takes on an angry tint to it. Shura is looking around wildly with his sword ready, still partially blocked from view. The young man is confused and agitated at not being able to sense the danger that his Father can, not realizing that Yomi is protecting him from an unknown threat.

But Kurama is no threat, he shouldn't be acting like one. Shouldn't worry Yomi and Shura unnecessarily.

He orders himself to jump down and walk into the field, putting on a small smile, for some reason Hiei doesn't follow. Shura relaxes and Yomi's expression flits confusion for a moment. Confusion and perhaps... relief?

"Kurama, where have you been old friend?"

He tries to speak, but the words don't come. His brain works of its own accord, drawing up an attack plan he had made long ago, when Yomi first invited him to Gandarra. He feels his arm raise, ki flowing into the surrounding plant life. Yomi shoves Shura out of the clearing as the blades of grass take on a life of their own. They surround Yomi, clicking together in a horrid menagerie of sound, pulsating with Kurama's ki; completely shutting Yomi off from the outside world. In this mess, he can not feel, cannot hear, cannot see, and cannot sense Kurama's approach. Shura screams out from somewhere in the forest, his voice confused and scared.

Shura's scream is shortly followed by a grunt of pain from Yomi. Kurama has sneaked in from the back... a cowardly move. He digs his claws in deep, bones cracking, flesh ripping, and the blood spurts. Bright red blood splatters up his arm, onto his pristine white clothing, across his face, and creating red streaks in his silver hair. A strange sort of homage to his human half. Yoko can feel Yomi's intestines groan in protest on his upper arm as it goes straight through the abdomen, then he rips his arm out and spins Yomi around. He breaks through Yomi's chest, the sternum snaps easily, like gunfire in the hypersensitive ears perched on Yoko's head. Yomi's lungs spittle blood and wheeze, crushed and torn in Yoko's powerful grip.

The grass returns to its normal state, humming the same harmonic tune as before, the gold stained red now. Shura breaks into the clearing and runs at Yoko, sword drawn. Hiei finally emerges and breaks the weapon, leaving it in shattered pieces. Without hesitation he spins around and levels a kick to the chest, sending Shura flying.

Yomi makes a gurgling sound, his expression showing pure shock and upset. Yoko feels himself smirk.

"As weak as ever. Go back to crawling along the ground in your darkness... it's where you belong." Yomi drops to the ground and he leaves, Hiei following close with Shura's outraged tears following in their wake.

Hiei finds himself at Kurama's side, the red head can't seem to catch his breath and is covered in sweat. There is a look of pure frustration of his face. Hiei squats next to the bed, not moving but eying Kurama carefully.

Eventually his breathing evens out and he looks at Hiei, confusion etched into his face. "Hiei... your Jagan is open." Hiei's eyes widen and he reaches up to find his headband gone; the Jagan, indeed, wide open and pulsating. He backtracts and picks it up of the floor right next to where he had been leaning against the wall. He ties it securely in place and turns back to the fox, who is staring at the wall with a blank expression.

"Did you have another nightmare Fox?" Kurama swivels his head around and looks at Hiei for just a moment before nodding. "About attacking Yomi this time." Kurama's eyes widen as his cheeks fill with a brilliant red flush.

"How...?"

Hiei gestures to the Jagan. "I fell asleep. Must've accidentally looked into your dream. It was rather... vivid." Kurama shakes his head and looks at his hands.

"I can still feel his lungs give under my grip..." almost a whisper "...the crunch of his bones and Shura's screams..." his hands tremble slightly "... and what I said." The fox shakes his head. "I have never believed... or even thought of things that way. Why would I dream of it?" He looks up to Hiei as if searching for an answer.

"I don't know Fox." He looks back at his hands and rubs his face.

"I don't know if I can take anymore dreams like that. They are too real... far too real. I might be able to deal with a dull version... but not like that. Who Hiei? Who's next? Why? Why am I having these accursed visions?"

His eyes are angry and sad, his body language is perfectly calm. Such is as it always is for his partner, never to show real emotion until his physical body can't stand the strain any longer. How many visions could Kurama really take? Experiencing just one had made Hiei sick to his stomach. How much worse for Kurama, who actually cared about the damned old goat? Had the fox's dream about hurting him been that detailed?

Something else plagues him. The dream he had seen was from his point of view, not Kurama's. In every other dream he had looked into, he always saw it from the dreamer's perspective. He knew their feelings and thoughts throughout the entire affair, but this had not been so. It is as if they had a shared dream instead. Has he become so attached to Kurama that he covers his back... even in nightmares?

No, that idea is preposterous.

It must simply have to do with the Fox himself. Kurama is far too private to let anyone too deeply into his thoughts. So when Hiei's mind intruded, Kurama's mind created a role for him instead of allowing him access to the primary perspective. That must be it.

What other way could it be?

A/N: Here is the second chapter for you. I hope you all enjoy it. Indeed another horrid dream for poor Kurama. Whatever shall he do? What is causing them? Why the hell is a story about dreams entitled 'Scientific Corruption'? Guess you'll have to keep reading for that.

As for Hiei - his thoughts and emotions, yes I did say emotions, are just a jumbled mess. Visiting the Ningenkai at lest once a week, coping with his new family on top of an increasing worry for Kurama's well being; what is a guy to do? Now add in the fact that he is facing down far too vivid visions from his partner and well... you have my kind of drama. Lol, drama and Hiei put in conjunction with one another.

Rather gory so far but if you read 'Ties That Bind'... well this one shouldn't bother you nearly as much. Straight up fights aren't as disturbing as cannibalism I guess. Anyway, still no headway on the cliffhanger idea... maybe later.

Ta ta!
