Chapter 5
Awakening

Yoko wrenches his Mother from Kazuya's arms. Sending and elbow into Yusuke's face and he comes in to stop the kitsune. He slams her into a tree, can feel her ribs crack from the pressure. His mind sobs and screams, not his Mother, anyone but his Mother.

"Would your dear friend ever kill his beloved, doted upon, dearest treasure; his Mother?" Her eyes are wide with fear, fear and love. How can she possibly still love him? His claws raise for the final strike. The other move in fast, but not fast enough.

"Suuichi..." She breathes out, accepting her fate.

He can't, not his Mother. He can't stop it but he can't watch either. He tears away.

MOTHER!

"Mother..." the body echos, before dropping to the ground, lifeless. His Mother falls to her feet, breathing hard, Kuwabara grabs her and wrenches her away, back to Kazuya.

The image has played in his head over and over and over.

"Suuichi..."

The sound of her quiet acceptance, the feel of her ribs cracking...

"Suuichi..."

Such a haunting sound.

"Suuichi..."

He heaves up the rest of Hiei's rice soup. At least the blood has stopped. He'd have to repay his partner later. As painful as it had been to eat, it had probably stopped the excessive heaving from causing too much damage. As gruff as Hiei can be... he is also very thoughtful; when he wants to be. He has to admit that the soup had probably been fabulous, but by the time it had been made any food would make him green. Normally he would feel guilty, but he could not waste the strength for it. Hiei understands, after all, that is the purpose of his soup. It has worked quite well.

Kurama sighs. He should be ashamed of himself, but can't find the strength to be. He still found the strength to hate himself, but not to be ashamed. He had given into his instincts and run when the situation became more than he could handle at once. But his running had saved Shiori of the other realm. Or did it save his own Shiori?

It should be simple to discern what is fictitious and what is real, even when fiction is used to portray inevitability in reality. Yet here he is, afraid, yes afraid, to go to sleep. How has the great Yoko Kurama been reduced to this? Then again, this isn't the first time he's given up his pride for Shori's sake. He knows he will do just about anything for the woman; many, many instances have taught that to him the hard way. That is not the issue.

How can he protect Shiori when he can't control his own mind?

"Fox." Kurama doesn't even turn as Hiei enters the bathroom with his next helping of soup. Three hours and he still can't settle his stomach. He takes the bowl gingerly.

"Thank you Hiei. It looks delicious." He sips it slowly, willing it to stay down.

"No need to lie Fox, nothing looks 'delicious' right now." He doesn't deny it, only takes another long sip. Hiei shifts in an almost uncomfortable way. "Fox... how did you do it?"

Kurama set the bowl down and gives Hiei a serious look. "How did I do what?"

Hiei looks distinctly more uncomfortable. "How did you stop yourself?" His body jerks in surprise at the Fox's sadistic laugh.

"By being a coward." Silence, an unvoiced request to explain. "I ran Hiei. I couldn't face the idea of killing my Mother..." He heaves up what little had made it into his stomach. "... so I ran. Be disgusted all you please Hiei, but I cannot find it in me to regret the move; cowardly or not."

"Perhaps... perhaps if I were more willing in the same Yukina would not have been injured. Your 'cowardice' has given us a way to fight back, but I have another. We need to stay awake to avoid any more of those dreams Fox. Your mind and body are in tatters right now, they can't take anymore abuse, especially not like this latest dream."

"Been monitoring me Hiei? I'm touched."

"Hn." Kurama smiles to himself. He has picked well in a partner. He knows he has made Hiei uncomfortable though and the kooromie will likely be silent for quite some time. Teasing always results in the strangely comforting silence. Just part of their routine.

"Fox..."

"Yes Hiei?" Kurama is slightly surprised by this. A new move, Hiei usually retreats at the first sign of anything considered affectionate.

"I do not find you disgusting." Kurama looks at Hiei with something strange in his eyes. Hiei cannot name it, and has never seen it before. It warms Hiei and makes him distinctly more uncomfortable, but he tamps down the urge to flee. While fleeing might have saved Shiori, Kurama needs him to stay and watch over him.

So Hiei stays.

***
About an hour later Kurama is finally able to keep the soup down and he moves to the living room, opting for an old futon he is using to replace the couch. He settles himself down gently and finds a comfortable position. Hiei perches on the back, eying him carefully. Kurama feels his eyes grow heavy and tries to fight it off.

"Fox you can't handle any more of those dreams."

"Fox you can't handle any more of those dreams."

Where had that echo come from? Kuram looks up at Hiei and is confused to find the Jagan open.

"You need to try and stay awake."

"Why...?" Why is your Jagan open Hiei? Why do our words echo?

Kurama reaches toward Hiei, or tries to... his exhausted arm can't move. That is when he feels the pull.

"Did you hear me Fox? I said to stop the dreams. Fox?" He sounds worried.

"No..." It is more of a moan. Flashes of green, a lab, a huge screen, the screen is showing Hiei shaking him. Funny how he can't feel it. A short man is pushed around by another who is frantically gesturing toward the screen. Yusuke, he realizes.

"Fox stay awake! You aren't strong enough right now!" He fazes between the green room and Hiei's face.

"Its pulling me there... the wierd thing in the back... back of my mind... I can't fight it... I'm sorry Hiei..." Hiei's eyes round in shock. Yusuke's shouts become more ardent, his gestures more wild. The Jagan glows bright purple. Odd beeping noises go crazy in the green room. Hiei shouts out to him.

"Hold on Fox!" Pressure builds in the back of his mind, then finally gives. Everything is sucked away...

...and he falls.

***
Green. The green room is back. His lungs are burning, he can't breathe. The room isn't green, he's in some sort of green liquid. The screen is blank and Yusuke is hysterical. Kurama pounds on the glass in front of him. Yusuke looks, and starts to run over. Kurama pounds again and again, the edges of his vision going black. There is a crack now. Yusuke has almost reached him. He pounds once more and it gives, he is thrown to the floor and kept there as the liquid pours over him. He coughs up lungful after lungful of the awful green liquid, finally he is able to breathe. On his knees he gasps for air, lungs taking in as much of the precious oxygen as they can. Pink rivulets run underneath him, blood from his cuts. Cuts made by the glass, he realizes. How many he isn't sure, by they are covering his arms and hands. Probably the rest of his body as well; but he can't see them right now. He is too numb to feel the sting on his skin, its so cold; cold air, cold liquid, cold floor. He isn't wearing anything, soaked and naked in a freezing room where the only warmth is coming from is still burning lungs. Why is he naked? Someone throws cloth over his back, warm and very welcome cloth, a jacket. Yusuke? His muscles hurt too much to get a good look, it feels as though he hasn't used them in ages. Finally he manages to focus on his friends face, it looks worried.

"Take it easy buddy. How you feeling?"

"C-Cold..." He manages to gasp out as his entire body shudders.

"That's ok we'll get you some clothes as soon as we can k?" Yusuke grins then looks over the top of his head. "Kuwa! How's Hiei!?"

"Get away from me you stupid oaf!"

"Geeze you ungrateful little shrimp I otta..."

"Where's the Fox!?" Hiei is alright. Finally the weariness overtakes him.

Shouts fly passed his deaf ears as his body hits the ground amongst the strange green liquid and glass.

A/N: Slightly complicated chapter here. I hope the last one cleared up enough for you to be able to understand it. Kurama was kind of caught between the two realities here. I shall be happy to explain it a little more in the next chapter. I am fairly sure you all know who is behind this by now, if you don't, you'll find out next chapter.

The green was taken from the device Mukuro had Hiei in to heal him after the fight with Shigure. It seemed appropriate and fit what I was going for, even if it isn't being used for the same purpose. Just your generic scientific holding tube. If you have seen the three kings arc you'll have a better image. I always thought that thing to be cool looking.

Rice soup, or at least the rice soup I've had is bland and generally used for upset stomachs in oriental nations like chicken soup is used in the United States. It seemed appropriate. I hope I didn't loose anyone with that. I didn't even know that rice could be soup until one of my friends had me try it.

I do not believe that either Hiei or Kurama are out of character here, even if it is a little mushy. They can't be completely hard all the time, neither do I believe either of them to engage in the disgustingly public and proud proclamations of attachment. Both of them are reserved, but not cold-hearted. Both also have a tendency to let their actions portray their emotions. Hiei protects Yukina though he never once says he loves her. Kurama never once says that he would die for his Mother, but really, how many times has he risked his life to save her? I think that Hiei would be much more open with only Kurama around, so yes, his actions might actually be deemed 'tender'. I hope this explains it a bit better for some of you. Slow steady and cautious romance built over time on trust, not a sudden OMG I LOVE YOU! It isn't realistic and it isn't in these character's personalities. There will be no eccentric gush between these two, but there will be romance. I'm sorry to any who expected such.
