Chapter 7
The Return of Evil

Yomi finds himself looking sightlessly out the window of his office once more; still unsure of why. Reports had come in a few days ago. The kitsune had been located at Tourin. The young Mazaku himself giving the complicated explanation to his messengers. Clones. Only a replica of Kurama, not the fox himself.

Yomi feels his muscles clench in anger, and regrets the loss of calm immediately. Clenching pulls on his still recovering torso muscles. Shura hasn't spoken since the information had been relayed. Thanks to his careful masks, Yomi has no clue what his son could possibly be thinking. A strange feeling of de-ja-vu overcomes him at that point. Helplessness. His claws bite his palms hard enough to draw blood.

The comforting presence and scent of roses reaches him long before the door slides open. His soft steps make next to no noise, knowing the Fox's normal stride... Yomi would call them hesitant. Kurama stands before the door for a moment, as if deciding whether or not to knock. He doesn't usually, well aware that Yomi will know of his approach beforehand. Again the hesitation; so rare for his old friend to be nervous. If the situation were different, Yomi might find himself smiling.

Kurama enters without knocking. Yomi breathes a silent sigh of relief, though he isn't sure why. They stand side by side for a time, looking out upon Gandarra; neither one seeing the landscape. He is choosing his words. Silence is the only thing between them for quite some time. Finally Kurama moves, muscles tense up, and his head turns to look at Yomi; would green eyes show determination? Delicate lips part...

"Yomi..."

The door cracks open, snapping them both out of the moment. Shura stands red faced, the heat reaching Yomi all the way across the room. He dashes forward and slams Kurama into the glass, despite it being several inches thick it groans ominously, as do the kitune's bones.

"Shura, how pleasant to see you." It is barley a whisper, breathed out more than spoken; a testament to the pain coursing through his friend's body. Finally Yomi is clued in to Shura's emotions, they are radiating off him like waves, serious tinges in his aura. Anger, sorrow, betrayal, love, loss, unsatisfied blood lust, and a great deal of confusion. But the one that strikes the deepest cord in Yomi is the helplessness. It is that which forces him to speak.

"Shura, we do not attack our friends unless in training." Shura's head snaps to Yomi, confusion and blood lust rising, Kurama's chest looses another millimeter to the pressure applied. "He was helpless in the situation of our attack. But like a good ally, found a way to help us anyway. Did you really think it coincidence that my heart was not pierced as would be most effective in a full chest blow?" Both Kurama's and Shura's aura's flash surprise, Kurama's just for a moment, but Shura's lingers. Slowly, recognition sets in, Kurama slumps to the floor and Shura backs off, lingering. His old friend breathes heavily, stretching his badly abused muscles. After a moment, Yomi offers a hand, which is readily accepted.

Now once more they stand side by side, looking out on Gandarra. Yomi feels the helplessness creep back up. Kurama must have felt the switch because he turns his eyes, and places a reassuring hand on the goat's shoulder. Such contact is rare between them, spared for only the most intimate of moments. Kurama has never initiated contact before.

Yomi didn't realize he had moved until he felt the silken stands of hair between his fingers. Kurama did not stiffen or move away. "I cannot tell the color of a rose by feeling it; red or white..." Kurama's cups Yomi's hand as it brushes against his cheek.

"Does the color matter Yomi? It is the scent that people always remember, even centuries later. That is what most people love about roses... you Yomi?"

His mask slips at the both the contact and the comment; surprise. "The scent is why I keep them..." He agrees easily enough. "But how will I tell them from other flowers?"

He feels the smirk form against his palm, and for a moment he sees his old friend's human form, far more delicate than expected, with a mischievous glint in his eye. Mental, a gift from the Fox. "A rose smells like any other flower Yomi? If it is the scent you keep them for you might as well be able to distinguish that scent from others." His friend pulls away slowly, Yomi's mask in tatters on the floor. His mouth hangs open in shock and his ears twitch in annoyance at being teased, but the message is not lost. Kurama saunters past Shura and to the door pausing to toss back one last bit, that smirk firmly in place.

"Just take a deep breath and appreciate it."

Hiei walks with grim determination through the halls of the Keep. His left eye twitches in annoyance at the whispers that follow him; a walking dead man. He barks at a few men lounging around instead of standing at attention.

Once again he finds himself in front of Mukuro's doors. He has been told that she had not left them since the attack. He raises his fist and knocks. No answer; he enters quietly.

He feels his heart clench at the sight; she is standing at the window... just like before...

The door closes behind him, somehow he feels like he is trapped. She doesn't turn to reprimand him this time, just stands there, not acknowledging his presence. Hiei's footsteps echo in his own mind like snapping bones, he soon finds himself behind her. She smells like blood, bandages peek out from the bottom of her sleeves and pants. She still isn't completely recovered.

"Your emotions are transparent Hiei, an enemy could use that against you." She hadn't moved, Hiei still feels as though he's been slapped though. She actually laughs. "Then again, I know your mind inside and out don't I? Every nuance and silent scream..."

Hiei's eyes widen just a touch, his mind revisiting her words. "Screaming without a sound..."
"You knew the entire time!" He feels slightly relieved, maybe repulsed as well.

She laughs again. "You've been slack with your training Hiei."

He blinks a few times. His training? Of course he has! He's been under the control of a worthless little troll trying to protect his partner from going insane with guilt. What the hell did that have to do with what happened to Mukuro? What he still feels responsible for?

"I can't have you getting weak on me. Every time you slack in your training you get ridiculous notions in your head that I have to knock out. I am not giving you time to do so this time. There are 500 soldiers in the basement waiting for you, I expect you back in a week's time." Hiei turns and leaves, shaking his head and wondering if he will ever be able to predict the strange woman.

She never turned, so he never saw the single tear on her cheek, or the proud smile on her face.

***
A week later the badly pummeled Hiei crawls through his partner's window. The first aid kit is ready and quickly emptied. Teasing is exchanged and relief floats in the air.

All is going according to plan.

His plan of course. Long black hair is flipped over his shoulder carelessly.

Ichigaki was a powerless fool, easily revived and manipulated. His final test to the kit. Kurama had passed, or failed as some might see. Either way, the time has come at last. The little kit is ready, and the last game can begin. His hands shake slightly in anticipation, so many years of waiting...

Finally the rules had been broken, time to claim his prize.

A/N: Sorry this one took so long guys, I have had such writer's block. But here it is! The last chapter of Scientific Corruption.

For those of you that didn't understand the conversation between Yomi and Kurama... too bad! Those two are supposed to be enigmatic, complex, and "Speak between the lines, hardly the warriors way." Lol, I tried to simplify it. I believe a real conversation between them wouldn't be so... related... to whatever they are really talking about. Weather becomes war... Fire spells are a drought... whatever.

Poor Shura just gets shock after shock after shock. I'm surprised I haven't driven him insane. He will be fine, his little world has been set right again.

Mukuro did know the whole time, she does have mental abilities, particularly reading Hiei's mind. This is why I believe she didn't go completely insane, still entirely messed up about it, but not broken. That might be all the reassurance Hiei needs. I don't know why some people think her to be heartless... heartless people don't seek "... a consciousness most like my own...", or avoid killing someone to help them get past their emotional roadblocks. Heartless people most certainly do not pour acid over half of their body because they can't bear to be raped one more time. Mukuro is not heartless, she's just emotionally screwed over, most of the characters in Yu Yu Hakusho are.

Evil dude is back at the end, hence the name of this chapter. I don't like him, but I don't think I am supposed to. You guys finally get to find out about him in the next one... Yes, he has been behind all that has been going on.

Like I said though, I've been having trouble writing, so I need to step back for a little while before putting up the last sequel to this one Inheritance. Probably about two weeks... maybe four. The last one is the most complex... heart wrenching... exciting... confusing... you name it, of the entire series. I seem to love to torture my soul for some reason, but you all share in it so I'll keep writing.
