Chapter 7
I'm so scared. She held her knees to her chest and looked around at the vast nothingness. She was truly alone. No one could hear her cries, nor would someone care. She wasn't important, never was. Everything had disappeared, whether it was for a reason or not she didn't like it. She felt like crying, she could feel the tears building up at the lids of her eyes, but they could not be surfaces. Her body would not let her cry, she was forced to hold back her pain. Her heart was pleading to burst. She was in an empty room, literally empty, if in fact it was a room. A room without floors or ceilings, walls and windows. She could hear a sweet voice whisper in her hear It's time Ryu. She stood up and began walking, walking aimlessly in her mind but her body being guided. She felt a cold hang grab hers.
A thick wall of trees surrounded her and others embarking on the same journey as she. It was another dream, another haunting dream. Dammit. She got up from her resting place and walked over to the entrance of the never-ending forest. How long would they have to travel in it? She much preferred the towns and cities, more action. She looked back at the rest of the gang, sound asleep. She couldn't help but feeling they were hiding something from her, something vital. She sighed and walked further into the uncharted forest.
She felt so free walking in the forest just now, not a worry in the world, even though there was all the worry in the world. Lives constantly being threatened, killed. Now that she was in the open, she too feared that she would be killed. She wasn't ready to die, no, not yet. People have already tried to kill her. People who were actually sent to take a life? As scary as it may seem she got a sick pleasure out of it. The fighting, the pride of spilt blood. She came across a big tree and decided to climb it, finding the perfect branch to perch on. She rested her back on the rough bark and began getting lost in her thoughts. She thought of her past, her future. Her friends, old and new. She thought of Hiei. Hiei. He was so silent, emotionless. Yet she appeared that way sometimes as well. There weren't many she cared for. I suppose he doesn't look too back either. What the hell am I saying, I would never be with him. He's a jerk, always playing that stupid tough guy act. Grr. Yet…he seems so gentle when you look deeper. Further into the emotionless eyes. When they were fighting she realized he was being careful not to hurt her. When he tackled her and was ontop of her she could have easily gotten out of she tries, and he would allow it. Why would he tell me to go to the group or be with him? Why would he care if I were alive or dead? She felt a strong gaze upon her, "Who's there?!?!"
Hiei jumped on the branch, startling Ryu and causing her to loose her balance and fall of the branch. Luckily Hiei got her by the wrist and pulled her back up to the branch. He sat down across from her and studied her as she recovered from the shock. She rubbed her wrist and looked up at him and said in a child like voice, "What were you doing Hiei, you scared me." He didn't know she could be so cute. He didn't say anything in return but only crossed his head to the side. Ryu hmphed and crawled forward, grabbing his face and turning is head to hers, "Why don't you talk to me?" He was taken aback. How could a girl take control of him like this? He found himself giving in, longing to stay quiet and make her plead, only to make his time with her last longer. Why the would he want to stay with her longer, he never wanted company before this.
"I saw you leaving and I was curious what you were up to. Happy now?"
Ryu let go and leaned back, satisfied, "Yes! I could've sworn everyone was asleep." Hiei shrugged his shoulders and went about looking around the forest. He suddenly felt Ryu become uneasy. He glanced at her from the side and saw her looking downwards and rubbing her left arm. She looked up at Hiei, who now had his head completely turned to Ryu. She began to speak in a low voice, "Hiei…are you guys keeping something from me?"
Hiei thought for a moment and couldn't think of anything that they had missed, "Not that I know of. Why?"
"I don't know. Just seems like you are." They both sat silently enjoying the others company without letting the other know. "So…why do you act so heartless?"
Hiei was a little taken back by this; no one had ever asked him that before. He sat there, contemplating on what to say to that, she certainly knew she didn't need to know his life story. He starred blankly at her.
"You must have some reason."
"Hn…bad childhood," was all he said, and he turned his head sideways again, still with folded arms.
Ryu slowly began crawling to Hiei with a pouting face, quivering her lower lip in a childish manner. Hiei smiled and said that the puppy face would not work on him. Ryu let out a big smile, and Hiei noticed that she was actually happy, her eyes glowed. She giggled as she continued to inch forward, until their faces were a breath away. "Please…" she said in a wanting voice.
Hiei smiled at how cute she was being right now, just like a little child begging for a doll, "Make me."
Ryu hmphed and pushed at his chest pushing him down onto the branch, she then pined his arms above his head and she leaped on his stomach, tightening her grip on his hands. Hiei smirked and tried to force her off of him, but was not successful. She giggled, "All this tackling is turning out to be good practice." He tried once more. "Oh come on Hiei your not even trying." The more he struggled the more the branch shook. He didn't want to push with all his strength and hurt her, not to mention the branch would snap in two and they would plummet to the hard earth. Not fun. Unfortunately for them Hiei's last struggle was too much, the branch snapped and they fell. He felt the impact of the ground and a light weight on top of him. Ryu had landed on top of him. She had a tight grip on his black cloak and her face was buried into his chest, their legs entwined with each other. She surfaced her face and rested her cheek on his shoulder starring at a tree, she lightened her grip as she said, "I don't think that tree liked me very much." After they both noticed the position they were in they scurried off of each other and dashed to different ends. After looking at each other they both broke out in laughter. Not hysterically but the flirtacious laughter. They were both embarrassed.
Hiei looked down at the ground and backed at Ryu. She was brushing herself off and cursed at the tree. "I don't trust anyone. I don't care for many either, nor what they think of me. I don't need anyone."
Ryu's head snapped at Hiei. He had confessed, and to her. She would've thought it would have at least been to Kurama first. Although he didn't need much explaining. It was out in the open for his eyes. She drug herself over to Hiei and listened contently. "I never did need anyone, never will."
"Where are your parents?"
"Most likely dead. I was thrown off an island and dubbed the forbidden child."
"Half ice apparition." Hiei nodded as Ryu continued, who had subconsciously moved closer, "Then why are you telling me this if you don't trust anyone?" Hiei shrugged as Ryu leaned in waiting for a response. She was so close, her lips so close to his. He wanted to take her into his arms, he wanted to kiss her. No Hiei, stay away from her. You don't need her. But suddenly realized how lonely he had been and she filled that. He actually laughed with her, and smiled. He held back. "What about you? You're not exactly social."
Ryu sat up away from Hiei and shrugged, "Well, you know that I'm adopted and my parents are dead. Or at least my mother is. I don't, or should I say Kurama, doesn't know about my father. I always felt like I didn't belong. People always shied me away, avoided me because I put forth and uneasy aura. The few friends that I did ho have I didn't trust entirely. Except for one." She pulled her knees to her chest and laid her shin on her knees. He could see sorrow in her eyes; her friend didn't have a pleasant end. Feeling bad for her he wrapped his arm around her and she buried her head in his chest. She smiled and whispered, "You do have some what of a heart."
The rest of the night was silent. They both got up as Hiei tried to hide any consoling manner and they both tried to hide the fact that they both enjoyed it. They walked back to the camp and waiting for sunrise.
