Shadow Dragon

Part 2

Chaos seemed to have taken over the weyr, bodies moving rapidly about the floors below when Futaro flew to his ledge. The interior glowed with extra lights and Yusuke gritted his teeth, glaring when Kenji landed beside him. Three girls were crowded onto the large brown dragon, right behind Kuwabara, and Yuskuke turned to glare at the cause of that overload. Hiei returned his glare with a blank expression and he let out a frustrated breath before sliding off Futaro. Not only had the odd boy refused to ride with a female, but one of the candidates they'd gone for hadn't made the trip. In fact, she was sick with something, eliminating her as a possible candidate for the time being. They'd never get her through the cold of Between without aggravating her condition. And from the movement in the cavern below it was obvious the hatching was already starting. Futaro and Kenji were purring, a low rumbling sound that mixed with other deep vibrations.

"Yusuke! Yusuke!" A pale girl with long, light blue hair ran to him, grabbing his arm. "You are *so* late! The Hatching's about to begin any second now!"

Turning to Kuwabara, Yusuke waved a hand at the teen, grinning when the tall boy grabbed two of the girls' arms and pulled them off down the hall. The other girl followed quickly, though it was obviously Hiei's presence that made her go. He didn't know what it was about the boy, but he seemed to have something against the female gender. Which was odd considering they'd found him protecting his girlfriend. "You, too," Yusuke said, waving at Hiei. The boy stared at him for nearly a minute before he blinked. "The eggs are hatching, get going!"

"I'll take him!" Botan said quickly, her pale blue eyes wide. "Yomi's mad and he's blaming you for there only being three candidates down there."

"He's just mad because Delana's hatching means she'll be mating again."

The two were talking about something, but Hiei didn't pay them any attention, his eyes moving around the weyr. He'd never been inside one, but he knew they'd carved out the inside of an old volcano to make the thing. There were wide ledges on the level with them, and he could see a few dragons perched, looking below. Moving to the edge, he looked down, spotting more ledges circling a sandy pit below. Two large ledges were directly above the sand, alcoves giving evidence to tunnels within the mountain. A red dragon was crouched in the sand below one of the larger ledges, long-fanged jaws open as she hissed at three terrified girls. Across from that one, a smaller bronze dragon was seated on the other large ledge, also watching the group of girls. Hiei's eyes narrowed when three more girls moved out onto the sand, their steps stilted as if walking was painful. It wasn't until they reached the other girls that he recognized them as the three candidates he'd ridden in with. A heavy hand landed on his shoulder and Hiei wheeled, his slitted eyes blazing at Yusuke.

"What are you just standing there for?!" Yusuke whispered furiously. "Get down there or you'll miss the Hatching!" If he'd thought about it, he would never have used those words, but the black-clothed boy was gone before the groan even left his lips. "Kurama's gonna kill me!"

Botan gasped, her mouth falling open when the short boy jumped off the ledge and she ran to Yusuke, her wide eyes moving down slowly to see the figure land in a light crouch on the sand. Her surprised expression turned to pain and she groaned, hiding her head against Yusuke's shoulder. She could hear Delana's roar of challenge. "He didn't just do that...did he...?"

"Oh man...I'm so dead..."

Hiei straightened slowly, his eyes flicking upward to where he could see a large amount of people seated back in another alcove. Their commotion as they rose was drowned out by a roar and he turned back to the red dragon that was no longer merely hissing, it looked ready to attack. The girls who were a few feet from him scuttled back, one running past him. She gave a sharp cry and he glanced back to see her fall, her hand burnt by the hot sand. Then he set his eyes on the gold egg the red dragon was crouched over. Obviously, he'd managed to mess up their little ritual. But at least he was on the sand, what more did they want? The dragon roared at him again and he glared at the sound, his right hand lifting to pull the kekkai off his jagan. He was immediately bombarded with conflicting voices as the dragons above wondered at him, one male voice trying in vain to calm the red female. She finally stopped that irritating roar and he folded his arms over his chest, blinking when her red spinning eyes cooled to a darker color that finally ended in a mixture of red and purple.

The large golden egg was rocking violently in the sand between her claws and Delana gave one more glare to the newcomer before lowering her gaze to the egg. She'd had two queens already, but she never lost the furious protective rage that came over her when it was time for a queen to hatch and impress. The calm voice murmuring in her mind made her tilt her snout to the side, her jaws closing as her chest rumbled with a tenor to match the other dragons. The sounds in the cavern grew louder until she barely heard the sharp cracking as the thick shell snapped, a small beak pressing through the opening. Its head hadn't broken free yet, but she rose on her hind legs, shock building through her as her wings lifted over her back. The snout was silver, but it wasn't just the odd color, the dragon was male.

"What's wrong with her *now*?" Yomi asked, his low voice only reaching the tall, white-haired Youko beside him. A strong arm shoved him aside and he glared, baring his teeth when pale amber eyes swept past him. First the strange candidate jumping onto the Hatching ground like a psycho and then Delana goes crazy. After two months waiting for the egg to mature, he was ready to wash his hands of the weyr and go fly after a different queen. Kurama was starting to get on his nerves.

People rushed to get out of his way as Kurama ran along the railing to the ledge above Delana. //Calm down, stay calm, I'm coming, just stay calm.// The queen wasn't roaring now, but he could feel her fear and confusion, it was too dangerous when she was already stressed over the hatching. Reaching the ledge, he jumped down, landing in a graceful crouch on the red dragon's back. Her body was heaving with harsh breaths and he peered over her shoulder, his eyes narrowing at the small dragon that was tearing its way out of the shell. Silver wingtips were visibly hardened already, bits of the egg sack still clinging to them. And its form was far too compact for a female. After three seasons, Delana had never given birth to a dragonet of that color, and no male had *ever* been born of a golden egg. [It's not mine! Not mine! Where is she?] Whirling green eyes turned on him and Kurama's teeth clenched. //Not now, love, it's a baby regardless, impression first, right? Look at him, he's as confused as you are.// Those wild eyes stared at him for a long minute before turning back to the strange dragonet that was currently wobbling on its feet, small head lifted as it searched for family.

Delana stared at the creature, striving to take comfort from the warm body on her back. It wasn't her baby, she felt nothing from it except confusion and fear. She would have known it wasn't a female if it were hers and she didn't understand what could have happened to her queen. Had she ever heard from the dragonet within the egg? She couldn't remember, she never got close to the dragonet queens, they left upon birth. But she would have known if the egg was hers, right? And gold eggs always hatched a female queen, always.

The silver dragonet was staring at the girls closest to it and Kurama pressed his cheek against Delana's neck. He was furious to think that someone had switched the eggs, but he couldn't let that fury consume him. Revenge could come later, hopefully they would still have a chance to get the egg back before the queen hatched. //This one was born early, love, remember? We'll find her before she hatches, and we have a new dragon in the weyr, see? It's not so bad, everything will be fine.// As if to prove him wrong, the dragonet let out a piercing shriek, waving its thin wings and wobbling toward the five girls still huddled together. Kurama wasn't surprised when some of them screamed and ran away from the creature. Girls were afraid enough of queen dragons, none had ever impressed a male. What made his eyes widen was the fact that the silver dragon's head jerked after one of the girls and it pursued her as if she were food.

These people were entertaining and Hiei had almost been content to watch after the odd white-clothed figure jumped down to the red queen. But he hadn't expected to be grabbed by a screaming girl and his eyes widened as his entire body went stiff, his jagan flashing with anger. It should have been enough, but the girl simply moved around him, her hands clutching the back of his cloak as she hid behind him. Jaw clenched, he turned his head slowly to look down at the girl crouching against his back, his left eye twitching violently. "Get off," he growled. She blinked at him, then hid her face against his cloak, a muffled wail of fear making him groan. Glaring darker, he looked to the little dragon that was making a slow pursuit of the girl and he snorted. His shoulder jerked forward and he jumped to the side, leaving her exposed. He didn't know much about impressions, but the baby dragon seemed to want her so he wasn't about to interfere. The girl wailed and lunged at him, but he dodged her, raising an eyebrow at the tear-filled eyes she raised to him. After a second, he let out another groan and moved in front of her, his eyes dark. "Don't touch me." The girl nodded furiously and he folded his arms again, staring into whirling red eyes.

He finally listened to the angry cries that had been trying to make their way into his mind and he frowned at the little dragon. He'd never heard of dragons *eating* the candidates, but it was definitely hungry. His eyes snapped up to the white-haired male crouched on the red dragon and he waved a hand at the dragonet. "Don't you feed these things?" Odd amber eyes blinked at him and he didn't know what to think when the man smirked suddenly. Something shoved against his chest and he jerked back, his eyes widening when the little dragon pressed against him, damp wings brushing his arms. "Stop that," he muttered, his eyes moving to the few girls still standing between him and the queen dragon. There were a few pieces of meat lying at the girls' feet and he jumped to them so fast that the little dragon fell onto the girl who'd been hiding behind him. But it ignored her horrified shrieks, rising so it could wobble after Hiei, sharp cries leaving its open beak. It nearly choked when Hiei unceremoniously shoved the meat down its throat, silencing the noise. "Don't thank me," Hiei muttered, pushing another piece of meat at the thing when it promptly begged for more. "Just stop screaming."
