Chapter 2: Shadow and Kit
--- --- ---
The bell chimed slowly from the halls of the school, dismissing the students for the day. Yusuke and Kuwabara sat in the yard of their school, the former lazily leaning against a tree, the latter doing his homework. His thoughts were drifting to the girl they had met not one week prior. Shadow, Hiei had said her name was, after he had read her mind when they met.
Who was she, though? Where had she come from? Where was she now? To take down a demon as swiftly and effortlessly as she had, she couldn't be a normal human…
“Maybe she doesn't live around here,” Kuwabara said, taking a bite of a sandwich he had pulled from his backpack.
“Maybe,” Yusuke replied.
“She seemed pretty average, didn't she? I mean, she looked like a human.” Kuwabara looked up at Yusuke. “Don't you think, Urameshi?”
“Yeah.”
He looked out across the schoolyard, searching for Keiko. She was supposed to go home with him, so that she could help him study… at least, that's what she had said. She wanted him to study so he could get into a good college, and blah, blah, blah…
But, something a bit more interesting caught the Tantei's attention. Two people arguing across the yard, and from the looks of it, it was a boy and a girl. The two seemed to be screaming at each other. Yusuke nearly grinned at this.
“Oi, Kuwabara, I'll be right back.”
“Huh?”
Yusuke got up off the tree, and started to stride over to where the two were, until he was in earshot. He put his hands on his hips, watching the girl scream.
“That's not a good enough reason to push someone, you jackass!” she yelled.
“If you and your stupid little friend hadn't been in my way, I wouldn't have had to!” he shouted back.
She growled at him, the deep noise coming from the middle of her throat. The boy seemed taken aback for a second, but then quickly regained his composure.
“Hey, you two were going to have a fight and not invite lil' ol' me?” Yusuke said, interrupting them.
The raven-haired girl spun to face him, anger evident on her pretty face. However, realization quickly passed over her, and the look on her face momentarily turned to surprise. Then, she spat, “Would you rather I kick both of your asses?”
Yusuke grinned as wide as humanly possible. “You couldn't kick my ass if you tried. I'm the toughest guy in school. Hell, in the whole city.”
“You shouldn't say that, you know.” Yusuke looked over to the girl that had said that. She was standing beside a tree, and she stepped out from underneath it, the sun making her ruby locks seem to be made of fire. Her hair fell in curls to her shoulder blades, the color of it a contrast to her deep blue eyes. “Shadow-chan will only want to kick your ass more if you say she can't. And believe me, she can kick your ass sky high.”
The Tantei looked back to Shadow, who had her eyes narrowed at him. He gave her a half-grin, and said, “I still-”
Shadow suddenly lunged forward, punching him square in the nose with all of her strength. Yusuke went flying back onto the ground, skidding about a foot. He let out a loud curse as he felt the warm blood flowing down his face.
Kuwabara ran over then, and looked down at him. “You okay, Urameshi?”
“Holy f- damn it, I think she broke my nose!” Yusuke exclaimed.
“I tried to warn you,” the redhead said, shaking her head. Shadow smirked, putting her hands onto her hips.
“Come on, Kit-chan, let's get on home.” She turned on her heel, and started walking away. The redhead nodded, and caught up with her.
“Shadow, wait! We want to talk to you!” Yusuke exclaimed, scrambling to his feet and then going after the two girls, ignoring the looks he was being given by the rest of the student body.
They caught up with them at the street, and Shadow stopped, visibly shaking with anger. Kit turned around, and said, “Fenrir, if they make a move to come after us, then you have permission to attack them. When we're on the next street, then you can come on back.”
Yusuke raised an eyebrow, and opened his mouth to ask who she was talking to, when he received his answer.
A large wolf shimmered into existence before him, baring its teeth and growling in a very menacing way. The Tantei jumped back in surprise, bumping into Kuwabara in the process. The wolf narrowed its deep blue eyes, its fur, which looked like flames, standing on end.
Kit giggled at the scared looks on their faces. “And remember, if you follow us, Fenrir can attack.”
She and Shadow turned and started walking off, leaving the two boys and the wolf. Yusuke let out a dry laugh as the two disappeared around the corner.
“Looks like we won't get to talk to them today, eh, Kuwabara?”
“Y-Yeah…”
The wolf straightened and snorted at them, before turning to follow the two girls. The people walking past the two Tantei paid it no mind, and it was as if they were the only ones who could see it.
“Yusuke!”
He scrambled to his feet and turned around, coming face to face with an angry Keiko. However, upon seeing his face, her anger turned into concern. “Yusuke, what happened to your nose?”
He lightly touched his nose with his fingers, remembering how Shadow had punched him. “Oh, just a fight.”
“You'd better get that looked at, you know…”
“Yeah. Let's go see Yukina. She can heal me, and I can talk to Kurama and Hiei too.”

Hiei smirked as the two retold their tale. “And let me guess, you two wet yourselves at the sight of this dog?”
“Nah, but Kuwabara screamed like a little girl,” Yusuke replied with a shrug, earning a glare from his friend.
“You said she called it Fenrir?” Kurama asked.
Yusuke nodded, and the redhead chuckled. “A fitting name for a wolf spirit guide.”
“A what?” Kuwabara asked, looking entirely confused.
“Fenrir is from Norse mythology. An amazingly strong and fierce wolf, destined to kill the gods.” The redhead smiled slightly. “Either she likes the name, or she enjoys mythology.”
“A spirit guide?” Yusuke repeated. “Like Puu?”
“Not quite. From what you two have told me, this was a shaman's spirit guide. They're a little different, meant more for attacking, than as a reflection of one's soul, like Puu.”
“Well, either way, we need to find Shadow and talk to her about how she took down that demon,” Yusuke said, folding his arms over his chest.
Just then, Botan entered and grinned cheerily at them. “How do you boys feel about a new mission?”
They all gathered around to see what she had to say.

Author's Notes: All right, chapter two is UP! I know, I know, it's kinda boring at the moment, but this'll pick up a bit soon. Also, this story is meant to be as a sort of prologue to the next story, setting up the characters for the real action that starts in the next story.
Thanks so much to all of you who reviewed!!!
