Chapter 3: Crossing Over
--- --- ---
Shadow sighed, lazily strolling along the aisles of the pet store, looking at their selection of koi fish. Black ones, red ones… yet still not as beautiful as the one that she had lost. She knelt down beside one of the tanks, placing her finger on it.
“You're pretty, but you're just not the same…”
She watched the little fish, swimming from one side of the tank to the other, when something caught her eye. She could see the reflection of someone's feet in the glass, and it looked like that person was male, judging from the pants and shoes.
She jumped to her feet and spun around, though she was surprised to see that the only thing behind her was a rack of fish food. She looked around, but she was alone in the aisle.
“Was that… my imagination?” she said aloud, though not to anyone in particular.
“Are you talking to yourself? Jeez, you're crazier than I am,” Kit said, walking over to her friend. Shadow glared at her.
“Oh, shut up. It's impossible to be crazier than you, and you know that.”
Kit grinned, and put her hands on her hips. “Oh yeah, I'm Queen of the Crazies.”
The raven-haired girl shook her head, but then smiled a bit sadly. “Well, I think I want to wait a little longer before I buy another fish.”
The redhead nodded, and then grabbed her friend's hand. “Okies, then let's head home. I bought some brownie mix, you'll have to help me with it.”
They started walking out of the store together, and Shadow laughed. “You'll need my help. I wouldn't trust you with a stove if my life depended on it.”
Kit pouted. “I'm not as much of a pyromaniac as you are, so you don't have any room to talk.”
“True.”
The two continued down the street, laughing about the day's events, and about Kit's inability to cook anything without nearly lighting her house on fire.

Kurama and Hiei walked down the street together, each feeling for the girl named Shadow with their senses.
“Do you feel anything, Hiei?” Kurama asked, shoving his hands into his pockets, feeling around for his communicator.
“No, nothing.” The fire demon seemed a bit annoyed to have to try to track the girl down, but he wasn't complaining aloud.
Yet, Kurama thought. I'm sure he will in a few minutes.
“You forget that I'm telepathic, Kurama,” Hiei said, not looking at him as they continued down the street.
The kitsune was momentarily taken aback, but he laughed it off. “Of course, I'm sorry.”
Hiei suddenly stopped, and Kurama did as well, giving his friend a confused look. “Hiei?”
The fire demon pointed ahead of them, and Kurama looked where indicated. Two girls were walking down the street, one with black hair and one with red. They seemed to be laughing about something, but the two boys were too far away to hear what they were saying.
“Is that them?”
“Seems like it… let's go talk to them,” Kurama replied.
They picked up their pace, catching up to the two until they were right behind them.
“Excuse me,” Kurama said.
The two stopped and turned around, the redhead giving them an odd look, and the raven-haired girl looking surprised, then angry.
“What do you two want?” she spat. “Go the hell away.”
“You know them, Shadow-chan?” the redhead asked, obviously a little confused about the situation.
“Yeah, I know them. I wish I didn't, though.” Shadow put her hands on her hips. “Now, what the hell do you two want?”
“We-“ Kurama was interrupted when Hiei spoke.
“You need to come with us.” He narrowed his eyes at the girl, who raised an eyebrow.
“Excuse me?” The redhead took a slight step away from the obviously angry Shadow. “You do not expect me to go with you, do you? No way in hell!”
“When Shadow-chan says she doesn't want to do anything, she won't, no matter what,” Kit said, though it was more directed at Hiei than anyone else. “She'll kick your butt if you're not careful.”
“Then it seems we'll have to drag you kicking and screaming,” Hiei said, as though it were the simplest thing in the world.
“Ha! I'd like to see you try to make me do anything, short stu-“
Shadow was cut off when Hiei suddenly stepped forward and picked her up, slinging her over his shoulder. She let out a little scream of surprise, then promptly started to wriggle out of his grasp.
“Let me go! Put! Me! DOWN!” she exclaimed. “Kit-chan, do something!”
The redhead seemed just as surprised as her friend. “But what-“
“Fenrir, baka!” Shadow exclaimed.
“Oh, right!”
Kurama quickly put a hand on her shoulder. “Please, we aren't going to hurt her, we just want her to talk with our boss about the demon she killed yesterday.”
“Hurry up and open the damn portal, Kurama. She kicks too much,” Hiei said, readjusting the petite girl on his shoulder.
“Damn straight I'm going to kick you! Now put me the hell down!” Shadow yelled.
Kurama sighed, and pulled a small orange ball from his pocket. It was almost transparent, with a small glowing light in the middle. He tossed it to the ground before them, where it cracked, releasing an odd sort of smoke. Then, there was an odd crackling noise, and when the smoke cleared, there was a portal before them.
“Well, that looks like it would be useful…” Kit said, putting her hands on her hips. “I'll have to get me one of those.”
Hiei stepped through the portal, taking Shadow with him. When they were gone, Kurama shook his head. “He can't ever do things the easy way.”
“Sounds like the male version of Shadow to me,” Kit replied. This made the kitsune chuckle a little.
“Well, you're free to come as well, if you'd like.” He looked down at her, and received a grin in return.
“Yeah, I'll come. I've got nothing better to do.”
“All right, then let's go.”
Kurama motioned for the girl to go through the portal, and after a second's hesitation, she did. As soon as she was gone, he reached down, picked up the cracked orb, and then stepped through the portal as well.
As soon as he was gone, the smoke cleared, and the street returned to normal, as if nothing supernatural had ever occurred there.

Author's Notes: Oohh! I've been told it's very funny the way Hiei just picks Shadow up and slings her over his shoulder. LOL.
