Soaring Hope

DG32173

Well, I hope everyone like chapter one. I am starting on chapter two now, though I finished chapter one a while ago. I just couldn't get a good idea. Now I have a few good ones that I hope work. I'll have Kurama do the disclaimer.

Kurama: DG doesn't own YYH or anything else you may have heard of. She does own her characters and her story, though she doesn't think the story is original.

DG: but it's not! I used an idea I found in a one-shot and decided to turn it to a full story with chapters. And there's a twist in the plot in this chapter!

-NOTE 2-

Frighttime is a real book series. Each book has three horror stories in them. And each story ranges from moderately scary to downright terrifying. And moderately scary to me is petrifying to my friends. So downright terrifying to me is enough to scare my friends into nightmares… I'm weird, I know.

Chapter 2

A Vampiress

Kaida is looking out the window of the history class. She is paying attention, it is just that most of her attention is taken up by the unknown visitor to her singing yesterday. Finally, the bell rings for the end of school. She grabs her stuff and heads for her locker. She opens her locker and everything falls out on her. “Ow,” she mutters. “I've got too much junk.”

“Would you like some help?” a kind voice asks her. She looks up to see the bright green eyes Suichi Minamino. She's startled. He almost never talks to her. Actually, this is the first time that she knows of.

“Um … okay,” she says, trying to get out from under her pile of books, papers, notebooks, binders, and other stuff. Suichi helps her stand up. She feels a flutter in her heart when he touches her arm.

She smiles at him as they start working together to straighten her mess of a locker. She blinks as she comes across her black notebook, which she must have dropped when her stuff fell on her. She quickly puts it in her backpack, so that no one will read it. But Suichi notices.

“What was that?” he asks.

“N-nothing,” she says, stuttering slightly. She is not going to tell anyone about the notebook. Her father had given it to her … but he died in the car crash and she didn't. She still blames herself for his death, even if it has been three years. She had sung for her dad all the time, when he was alive. But now that he's gone, she just doesn't have the will to sing in front of others. So she quit trying, saying that the accident took her musical voice away.

“I think it was something,” he says, reaching for her book bag.

Kaida holds the bag out of reach. “Nah-uh! No looking!” she says, but smiles. He pouts playfully. They finish cleaning up the mess scattered in the hall. The student body had dissipated, as it has been a half hour since last bell. She gets an odd feeling being around Suichi. Like she's known him from somewhere before. She mentally shakes her head. That's impossible. They finally pick up the last of the books and stuff.

Suichi looks at the book in his hand and blinks. “Frighttime?” he questions. “You enjoy horror books?”

“I got nine of that series. That particular one was the first one I got,” she says, taking the book from his hands. “And yes, I love horror books and movies. I especially enjoy R. L. Stine's books.”

“Which stories are in that one?” he asks, as Kaida stand up.

“Terror-Go-Round, Night Shocker, and It's After Me,” she says, not even looking at the book. “I like Terror-Go-Round the best, as it is about a haunted carousel. Which makes it kinda weird at the same time.”

Kaida starts to walk away, and senses that Suichi is following her. She tells herself that it's because they are both heading for the student parking lot. She exits the building and goes to her silver hotrod convertible. She watches silently as he walks to his car, a black Ford Explorer. He seems deep in thought about something. She figures it's about the history project that they were given today. She gets in her car and leaves, not realizing that he was looking at her with a thoughtful smile on his face.

---That night---

Kaida twitches in her sleep and turns on her side.

---Kaida's dream---

She is running. Constantly running. She passes a few mirrors, and sees the reflection of a silver fox in them as she passes. She ignores them and keeps running, knowing something is following her. Something that wants her dead. A bat flies overhead, startling her. Then, a pale white bat attacks her, biting the left side of her throat. She yips in pain.

---Out of dream---

Kaida sits up suddenly, her hand clasped to the left side of her throat. There is the scar. The scar that turned her into a vampire. But what was with the fox in the mirrors? That never occurred in the dreams before. This is going to be a long night.

She fingers the Shadow Stone hanging from her neck. That is all that allows her to be able to move in sunlight. If it were to be removed while she's in sunlight, she would most certainly die. She looks out the window. It's still dark. She creeps out of her window and drops to the roof of the porch. She looks around. She's hungry. Hungry for blood, that is. She jumps off of the porch roof and runs into the forest surrounding her dark house.

She finds a rabbit, and drains it of its blood. She hates drinking the blood, but she has to keep “alive”. But she's not exactly of the living anymore. She's a part of the undead population. The Shadow Stone is all that allows her to venture out in the daytime, like a normal human.

She hears voices heading her direction. She jumps into a high tree and turns into a bat. It's almost sun-up, anyway. The Shadow Stone becomes a part of her body whenever she goes bat. She watches silently as a group of four boys travel through the path beneath her. She recognizes three of them. `Suichi? Yusuke? Kuwabara? Why are they there?' she thinks.

“So, Kurama, why were you late?” Yusuke asks. `Who's Kurama?' she wonders and is shocked when Suichi answers.

“I was helping someone,” Suichi answers, as if he's trying to avoid the topic.

“Who?” Yusuke asks, intrigued.

“Kaida,” Suichi mutters.

Yusuke and Kuwabara blink. “Why were you helping her?” Kuwabara asks.

“The stuff in her locker fell on top of her. I still have yet to figure out how she got half of that stuff in that locker. She had a lot of stuff,” Suichi answers, trying to figure out how Kaida could fit everything that she had in her locker in it.

“I heard that she used to be a great singer. Why doesn't she sing anymore?” Yusuke asks.

Suichi freezes for a split second. “I don't know. Maybe she really did lose her voice like she's been saying,” he says. Kaida isn't convinced by his remark. Suichi knows something.

Yusuke shrugs. “What all was in her locker?” he asks.

“Let's see, she had sixteen horror books, five binders full of paper, eighteen notebooks,” he says. “I think I saw a couple cases of cigarettes and a few lighters. A water pistol, a bag of empty water balloons, five romance novels, thirty music CDs, a portable CD player, a dolphin plush, a silver fox plush, two cases of sodas, a box of graham crackers, a cheerleader outfit, a bag of powdered sugar, two sci-fi stories, and a black notebook she wouldn't let me see,” he says, finishing up the list.

Kaida blinks. `I didn't know I had so much stuff in there,' she thinks offhandedly.

“Damn, that's a lot!” Yusuke exclaims. “What did the black notebook look like? Did it have lock?”

“Why, yes it did. How did you know?” Suichi asks, surprised.

“She takes it out all the time in Languages. She never listens to the teacher, and she's constantly answering the questions in a language we haven't studied yet. And then we start studying that language the next week, so she changes to another language. She's weird,” Yusuke says frowning.

Kaida lets loose her perch and flies down to attack Yusuke, who yelps and swats at her. She stays just out of his reach, and keeps antagonizing him. “I don't think that bat likes you,” Suichi says, blinking at Kaida. “And we're on Kaida's property, I hope you know.”

“We are? Get away, you mangy rodent!” Yusuke says, still swatting at Kaida.

“Actually, bats aren't rodents, they're marsupials,” Suichi says.

“And?! It's messing with me! Get it away!” Yusuke says, trying to get Kaida away. Kaida mentally shakes her head and flies off.

She lands in a clearing several yards away and transforms back to a human. She acts as if she's walking through the forest and stumbles upon the boys. “Hey, what you guys doing on my land?” she asks, tilting her head to the side.

“We were just coming through,” Suichi says, smiling at her.

“Stupid bats,” Yusuke mutters. He's trying to get his hair to lie down normally again.

“Oh, you must have stumbled on my bat colony. They don't like intruders much. I'm surprised they let you get this far,” she says, smirking.

“You have a freaking colony of those things?!” Yusuke shouts, very upset.

“Yeah. I started with a pair of vampire bats that were wounded, and the colony kept growing with new species,” she says, shrugging. Yusuke pales when she says vampire. “Vampire bats don't eat human blood, they only eat animal blood. And Tessa and Rio are very particular about what kind of blood they eat. They only eat lambs blood, strangely enough.”

Kaida turns to go, when Suichi stops her. “Why don't you sing anymore?” he asks.

“I lost my voice in that stupid accident three years ago. So I don't try anymore,” she says, frowning. “Well, I gotta get home, or my kaasan will be wondering where I went. Ja ne.”

She waves over her shoulder and leaves the forest. She climbs the post on the porch and gets to the porch roof. She climbs in through her open window and lies down on her bed to think about what had happened.

---the guys---

“That was freaky how she showed up so soon after that bat left,” Yusuke says, trying to figure it out. The others look thoughtful.

“Perhaps if we follow her, we'll find out,” Kurama suggests, heading in the direction she had gone. The others soon follow. When they reach the edge of the woods, they are surprised to see Kaida climbing the post on her porch to her porch roof. She climbs through an open window, but doesn't shut it.

“Please tell me that those aren't scratches on the marble post!” Yusuke says, staring at the scratches on the marble post.

“They are,” Kurama says, surprised.

“No way! She can't be human!” Kuwabara says, startled.

“Obviously,” Hiei mutters. “She's a half-demoness and a vampire. She was the bat that attacked the detective.”

Yusuke growls. “No way! She said she has a bat colony,” he says.

“She does,” Hiei says, turning away. He walks into the forest, soon followed by the others.

That's a good place to stop, I believe. Hope all enjoyed it! Off to work on chapter 3!
