Chapter Two

Dammit… why is it always darkness? Am I dead? What happened...? Oh my god, Soi! I have to protect her! The feeling returning to Yui's body abruptly ended these thoughts.

“Ugh…” She moaned in pain. She opened her eyes and four figures slowly came into view. Soi, along with three of the four men. From the flickering shadows on the wall she'd say the fire was still going.

“Oh Yui!! I was so worried!!” Soi sobs, throwing herself on Yui. Yui winces a bit but smiles, hugging Soi back.

“Aww c'mon. I'm not going anywhere, I promised to get you back to your village, remember?” Yui said. “And Yui Mayonaka does not break her promises.” Now she turns her attention to the men. The one closest to her had long red hair and sparkling emerald eyes. He was a good deal taller than Yui and had a kind face. He was pretty cute too. The second closes was a boy with slicked back black hair and chocolate colored eyes. He was taller than Yui too, but Yui was extremely short, about as tall as Soi. The last one wasn't so easy on the eyes, but had a kind face too, and compared to Yui he was a giant.

“Hello Miss.” The red head smiled, holding out his hand. “I'm Kurama.”

“Hey… I'm Yui.” Yui replies shaking his hand somewhat cautiously.

“Oh don't worry Yui, they're really nice, and they have food!” Soi says, taking a huge bite out of a chicken wing. It was then that Yui noticed her wounds had been cleaned and bandaged.

“How long have I been out?” She asks.

“Three days. Luckily you only suffered from energy loss, and that was only because of blood loss.” Kurama says. Yui sits up, ignoring the searing pain shooting throughout her whole body. “You shouldn't sit up. But I would like to know, why were you all cut up?” He asks, his eyes shining with concern. Yui gives Soi a questioning look and Kurama answers the unasked question, “She refused to tell us anything without your permission. Very loyal.”

“Oh, well I guess it's okay if you know. We were both trapped in a dungeon somewhere. So when we were taken to see… the leader, we escaped. Jumped out a window five stories up and ran like hell. I was running out of energy so we ran into the cave.” Yui explains. “So now I've gotta get Soi back to her village. The Koorime Island or whatever it's called.” You see Kurama's expression change to surprise quickly, and then change back. Yui leans on the wall for support as she tries to stand. Her knee gives out and Kurama catches her. “Sorry.” She mutters, standing on her own.

“Yui you shouldn't try standing, you're still very vulnerable.” Kurama says, avoiding the word weak. He has the suspicion that Yui is the type of person who, if you tell her she cant do something she's gonna do it to prove you wrong. “You need to rest up for your energy. I have an idea, two of us will take Soi to the Koorime Island, and two of us will stay here and, er… make sure you heal.” Kurama says. Yui looks to Soi, who is stuffing her face near the fire.

Yui sighs in defeat, “It would be the best thing for her. Just let me say goodbye.” She says. She didn't want to admit it but she had grown fond of Soi. Kurama nodded and went over to Soi and told her you wanted to say something. Soi came over watching you curiously. “Hey Soi, these guys are gonna take you to your village, okay? I would go but I can barely even stand.” Yui muttered quickly.

“I understand. Just promise you'll come visit sometime.” Soi says, smiling. You nod and she walks back over.

“Okay, well I think me and Kuwabara should take Soi back, because it would be a horrible idea for Hiei and Kuwabara to be stuck together.” Kurama says. Not to mention I'm fairly certain Hiei wouldn't want to go back to the island again… Kurama thinks to himself. “We should leave as soon as possible so we can get back as soon as possible. Yui, when we get back we should take you to meet our boss, okay?” Kurama asks. Yui just shrugs. So Kurama and the greasy haired boy get ready to leave and a short boy with spikey black hair and gleaming red eyes comes into view. “Yui, this is Hiei.” Kurama introduces. You do you two finger salute and sit down. You stare into the strange scenery. Much of it was mountains and plateaus. There was a stretch of desert a long way off.

You look up as Yusuke sits next to you. “What's up?” He asks.

“Nothing. I was just thinking.” You reply. “I don't understand it. Apparently I'm some kind of demon. I wish someone could explain it to me.” You reply.

“Well that's what our boss' job is. He's the ruler of Reikai. He's supposed to know everything.” Yusuke says. He adds, “I'm sure Soi will be okay with Kurama and Kuwabara.” Yui looked up at him. She nods a little. “You know… you're really short.” Yusuke says, laughing. Yui glared at him. He just kinda shrugged and smiled. Yui rolled her eyes.

“And you're really stupid.” She said. He blinked and for a minute she thought he was going to hit her, but he just laughed.

“You remind me of my mother.” He laughs. Yui raises her eyebrows. “She's always saying stuff like that.” Yui looked back out to the scenery. Her stomach growled loudly. Yusuke looked around so fast his neck cracked. As he sat there looking around rubbing his neck Yui laughed.

“Damn… I'm hungry.” She says.

“Oh my god! That was your stomach?? I thought we were being attacked!!” Yusuke shouts. Yui smacks him upside the head. “Alright already, jeez… what do you want to eat?” Yusuke asks.

“Food.” Yui answers. Yusuke does an anime fall. Yui laughs, “Got any apples or something? No meat.” She adds.

“What??” Yusuke screeches. “You're a vegetarian?” Yui nods. Yusuke shrugs. “No wonder you're so scrawny. I think we've got some fruit around here somewhere.” He mumbles, going through a bag.

“I'm not scrawny, you're just pudgy.” Yui retorts. Yusuke throws an apple at the back of her head. “OUCH YOU JERK!!” She bellows.

Hn. Keep it down onna. A voice says in her head. She glances around. “Not gonna ask.” She mutters.

“Hearing voices?” Yusuke asks knowingly. “Its Hiei, he's a telepath.” Yui nods and takes a bite out of her apple. She gets up and walks out of the cave. “Hey wait, where are you going?” Yusuke asks, following her. “Kurama said you shouldn't walk, let alone walk.”

“Well I'm sorry, but I've gotta piss, and I'm not gonna do it right there.” She points back to the mouth of the cave. She walks into some nearby bushes. Yusuke laughs and walks back to the cave. Yui emerges a minute later with a squirrel on her shoulder. She has an anime sweat drop.

“Looks like you've made a friend Yui.” Yusuke says, laughing. Yui flips him the bird and walks back into the cave. The squirrel hops off her shoulder and starts sniffing around. It goes a way back until its barely visible.

You can hear it poking around until Hiei's voice erupts, “What the hell is this little rat?” Suddenly a fireball illuminates the scene. Hiei is sitting with his back against the wall with the squirrel on his head, flattening his hair. Hiei grabs it by its tail and holds it upside down in front of him.

“Oy! Let my squirrel go!” Yui shouts. Hiei smirks and flings the squirrel away. Yui seems to disappear for a second until she reappears, with the squirrel on her shoulder. She takes it back to the mouth of the cave with her and sits back down. Yusuke is staring at her with a shocked expression.

“Yui, I didn't know you were so fast.” Yusuke says.

“Join the club.”

“But I thought you were injured.” He thinks aloud.

“I am.” Yui replies. She is watching the squirrel run around in circles in front of her. “Same thing happened when da… uh the guy tried to touch me, I moved so fast it was like time froze.”

“Must be your demon instincts.” Yusuke muses. “Your demon side must be very defensive or something. And protective of small fluffy things.” He laughs. Yui is about to thump him on the back when she freezes and turns to the squirrel. Her eyes are wide open and her mouth is agape. She looks back and forth from Yusuke to the squirrel.

“Did you hear that??” Yui asks. Yusuke looks at her curiously. “Never mind… I must be imagining things.” The squirrel has now stopped and is watching her intently. It starts making that noise squirrels make and Yui's head snaps back to it. “Now I know I'm not imagining it. Yusuke the squirrel is talking to me!” She exclaims. Yusuke bursts into laughter.

“Yah right Yui, nice try.” He says.

“No really Yusuke!” She says, staring closely at the squirrel. “Its like that movie… Doctor Doolittle or whatever, where the guy can talk to animals!” She says.

“You're nuts, Yui.” Yusuke laughs. Yui occupies herself with the squirrel and Yusuke falls asleep. That's basically how it goes for the next two days. Then Kurama and Kuwabara return from the Koorime Island.

Kurama stares at Yui, who is healed now and following the squirrel around. “Uh… Yusuke? Why is Yui following the squirrel?” He asks.

“She says it talks to her.” Yusuke laughs. “She's been doing that since about an hour after you two left.” Kurama just looks like he doesn't know weather to laugh or be worried.

“I think we should go see Koenma now.” He says. Yusuke nods and takes out a compowder looking thing from his pocket. He mutters into it for a minute and a portal appears before him.

“Yui!” He shouts. Yui looks up. “Time to go meet our boss.” The squirrel hops on her shoulder as she heads to the portal. She steps through it and lands in an office type room. It has a desk with a toddler standing in front of it. He has a large hat and with Jr. on it. The others appear behind Yui and she steps aside. She's just kinda standing there blinking, looking at the toddler.

“Koenma, this is Yui. Yui, meet Koenma. Ruler of the Reikai.” Kurama says. Yui raises one eyebrow. Koenma glares and transforms into a teenager. Now Yui's eyes are wide again.

“Better?” He says. Yui just nods. “Good. I need to know everything that happened in demon world.” He says. Yui sighs and sits down. She explains everything in detail. Koenma nods through it at certain parts. When she gets to the part about the talking squirrel Yusuke and Kuwabara crack up again and Koenma sweat drops.

“I think I may be able to explain that. One moment. George!” He calls. A blue ogre runs in and bows. “I need a background check on Yui Mayonaka.” He says in an all-important voice. The ogre nods and rushes back out. After a moment he runs back in with various papers, which Koenma scans quickly.

“As I suspected. Yui the reason you can understand the squirrel -” Yui interrupts.

“Kinezumi.” She says quietly.

“What?” Koenma asks.

“His name is Kinezumi.” Yui replies. Yusuke and Kuwabara are snickering again.

“I see… anyway the reason you can understand Kinezumi is because your mother was an dryad. This means you are half dryad, half fire demon. If you want more info on your parents you can feel free to read their records later. But I have a question.”

“Okay.” Yui responds.

“Since you have no family in which you wish to live,” He looks at Yui, who nods, “will you stay here and train with the guys? Once you have trained enough, will you join my spirit detective outfit?” He asks.

“Er… okay.” Yui agrees.

“Good then. We have an extra room, so you should go shopping for new things. You wont need a bed or a dresser, there is a king size bed already there, and a walk in closet. You also have a balcony and your own bathroom.” Koenma says. He hands Yui a few credit cards. “Do not spend all of them.” He says. Yui just gives him the `ya sure' look and walks away. Kurama volunteers to go with her. They go a mall in the Ningenkai. The plan is to lug all of this to Yui's old house, and then get a portal from there into her room. Simple enough.

“So where should we start?” Kurama asks. She shrugs.

“No idea… I don't go shopping much, so I don't know where we should go.” Yui says. Kurama laughs a little and leads Yui into the nearest store.
