Chapter Fifteen: The Mission's End
The next week passed by very quickly. Nothing special happened, and the demons didn't even notice that they had fakes instead of the real sword, orb and mirror. Pretty much, the week was boring.
It was the last week that was the most interesting. The buyers began to make offers to the mercenaries. Surprisingly enough, Kurama and I got quite a few offers. We refused all offers but one... the offer from Yusuke and Kuwabara. It really was too bad that Kurama and I weren't going to get the money. We were 'hired' for over a million dollars. Hiei was also 'hired' by the two human spirit detectives for about a third of that amount.
Since I didn't have anything to do, I spent much of my time just lounging on the deck with Kurama and talking to Jacinth. The last week was very relaxing, and I really enjoyed it.
The final day, everyone was packed up and ready to leave when men came running down the halls, knocking on all the doors and making an official announcement from the captain.
"All humans and demons on the ship are to stay put and allow their luggage and room to be searched. Some very important objects have been stolen from the captain."
Kurama and I exchanged glances as someone knocked on our door, repeated the phrase, and left. We knew what the captain was looking for. He wanted the Shadow Sword, Orb of Baal, and the Forlorn Hope back.
"Any ideas?" I asked Kurama.
"We could just teleport away," he suggested. "Or you could quickly teleport home, hide the sword there, and come back."
"Good idea. Wish I had thought of it," I replied, smiling at him. "Be back in a sec!"
I summoned up my spirit energy and watched the scenery change from the yacht to my house. In a hurry, I tossed the sword on the bed and teleported back to the yacht.
I gave Kurama a wink as I reappeared. I was just in the mood to be flirty, which could possibly play out to my advantage when the demons came to search the room.
Kurama chuckled and smiled in return. He was about to say something else, but some very ugly crewman barged into the room, effectively shutting him up.
The crewman was a demon with purple skin, black eyes, a bunch of horns on his head, and about three sets of ears. He was bald, and he went around barefoot.
"I'm here to search your bags and room. Try to stop me, and you will be put under arrest and taken captive," he informed us stiffly.
I shrugged my shoulders and pointed to my suitcase. "Go for it. Just be careful that you don't fall into it," I told him.
The guy glared at me, then looked at Kurama. "And what about you?"
"My stuff is on the bed," the fox demon replied simply, glancing at his suitcase. "You may go through it first if you wish."
"Thank you for being so cooperative," the purple demon said, his frown not as deep as before. He began to systematically search through Kurama's stuff, and he found nothing. When he went and looked through mine, he had a few problems. He kept taking out things and then taking more out... and then even more. He gave me a surprised look. "What is all this about?"
"It was spelled for unlimited storage space," I answered, smiling. "It is one of my favorite belongings... right up there next to my strawberry shampoo." I knew that I was being silly, but I was doing it to confuse the guy. It would especially mess the crewman up since Kurama and I were acting like such opposites.
"Well, I think I got everything out of it," he glanced around at all the things around him. The floor was almost completely covered.
"Yep. It looks like you took all my possessions out," I agreed. "Now would you mind if I put them all back in? All the stuff's easier to carry in the suitcase."
"I guess that you check out all right," the purple demon said, shaking his head. He didn't seem to believe his eyes. "I'll tell the captain that you two are free to go."
"Thank you," I replied pleasantly, smiling.
"I hope that you find whatever it is you're looking for," Kurama added.
"Thanks," the demon responded, and then he left.
I breathed a quick sigh of relief. "Do you think that he meant that we can leave now?"
"I'm not quite sure," Kurama replied, shrugging his shoulders and beginning to put all his things back in his suitcase.
"And what about Yusuke and Kuwabara? Are they free to go as well?" I asked, tossing all my things back into my suitcase. I really didn't care if they went in all neat. It wasn't like I had to worry about cramming anything in there correctly. "And I wonder how Hiei's taking the search. Knowing him, he probably tried to chop off the heads of all who tried to touch his things."
"You're probably right," he agreed, chuckling as he shut his suitcase.
"He's obsessed enough about no one telling anyone about him being Yukina's brother," I said, shutting and picking up my baggage. "Shall we see if we can get off now with our... employers and fellow employee?"
"I believe that would be wise," Kurama answered, heading out the door with me right beside him.
Kurama, Hiei, Yusuke, Kuwabara and I finally got off the yacht after a few of the crewmen double checked with the purple demon that we could actually leave. All in all, I found everything rather... anti-climatic. I was expecting to have to fight my way off or something. Instead, all I had to do was just go down the gangplank and walk off with the other spirit detectives.
When we were all far enough away, Yusuke spoke up. "That was just a little too easy."
"That's because you weren't the one who made the plans," Hiei stated bluntly.
"What are you saying, Hiei?!" Yusuke demanded to know angrily.
"Only that you always mess up the plans and cause a big fight," the fire demon replied. "Not that I'm complaining." He loved to fight. It was one of his main hobbies.
"Don't you two dare start fighting," I warned them. I had acted cheery for too long. My patience was thin, and I wasn't about to let my friends fight. I just wasn't in the mood. "I didn't just escape from one potential fight, only to have to deal with a different one."
Kurama smirked. "It might be in your best interest to listen to her," he suggested.
"Yes, I do agree," Botan said, stepping out of an alleyway with her oar in one hand.
"Hey, Botan!" I greeted her brightly.
"Boy, she sure has mood swings," Kuwabara muttered under his breath.
"What was that, Kuwabara?" I inquired, a dangerous tone in my voice.
Hiei shook his head sadly at the carrot top. "Foolish ningen. You never know when to keep your mouth shut."
"That's enough out of you, shrimp!" Kuwabara retorted, glaring at the short fire demon.
"NO FIGHTING!" I snapped. Kuwabara froze in place, his eyes wide. Hiei just shrugged his shoulders and crossed his arms. Even Yusuke, who I had not even yelled at, froze in place.
"Well, that certainly was effective, wasn't it?" Botan commented, finding the situation amusing. She quickly got down to business since everyone was quiet. "Now, Koenma wants to talk to all of you."
"It'd better be a congrats," I grumbled. "I want to enjoy the rest of my summer vacation. I do not want to go on another mission."
"I think that he just wants a quick report and the last item," Botan said.
"Report?!" Yusuke groaned. "There is no way I'm gonna fill out any stupid paper work for that toddler."
I glared at Yusuke, and he quickly shut his mouth. He understood that I wasn't in the best of moods. My cheeriness only lasted so long; and with the unused adrenaline I had been pumping to prepare for the battle that hadn't happen, I felt very tense.
"Kaline took that to her house," Kurama stated, reminding me that I had to go get the Shadow Sword.
I sighed. It seemed that I would be doing quite a bit of teleporting. "You guys go on to the spirit world without me. I'll just go get the sword and meet you in Reikai." With that said, I teleported out of there.
I appeared in my room, grabbed the sword off my bed, and then teleported to Reikai. Of course, I ended up in Koenma's office to find the total chaos that I had seen before. Some things never changed.
Everyone was in Koenma's office, which didn't surprise me. Hiei was in a corner, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. Yusuke was just standing right in front of Koenma's desk, acting like his cocky self. Kuwabara was close by. Botan was closer to the door, and Kurama was a bit off to the side.
"Hey, everyone," I said, placing the sword on Koenma's desk and going over to stand by Kurama. The fox demon put his arm around me and pulled me close, a smile on his face.
"Well, it seems that you all were very successful," Koenma said. "Although three of you were pretty much useless."
"Hey!" Yusuke protested, and Kuwabara quickly echoed him. "It's not my fault there wasn't a big fight!"
"So what paperwork do I have to fill out?" I asked, ignoring the two humans and getting right down to business. "It'd better not be too much."
"Actually, you and Kurama don't have to do anything. I spent most of my time watching you two," the toddler replied.
"How much did you watch us?" Kurama asked suspiciously.
"Enough. You two are quite the lovebirds," Koenma commented, smirking.
"HENTAI!" I screamed, going over and whacking him upside the head. "Do anything like that again, and I'll break your stupid viewer... thingy!" I then turned to Kurama. "Do you wanna leave?" I inquired, my voice calm. "We don't have anything to do here, so we might as well."
"Would you like to go to the park? We never did get to finish our stroll," Kurama replied, smiling at me. My quick change of tone didn't bother him. He was use to it.
"That sounds wonderful," I told him, walking up to him and kissing him on the cheek. "It sounds like the perfect way to spend the afternoon."
"Very well. Let's go," he said.
We both teleported to the park we had been in a month before. The flowers were still blooming, the trees still offered us shade, and everything was still so beautiful.
Hand in hand, we finished our date.
