Chapter Four: Hiei and Dancing
The bar was rather dark, and it really reminded me of the dance clubs that I always saw in movies and such. A bunch of girls and guys were on the dance floor, dancing much like teenagers do, and they seemed to be enjoying themselves. Of course, most of them were demons.
Demons danced? I could barely believe it. I almost broke out laughing. It looked like one of the school dances, except not all of the people on the dance floor looked human. In fact, some of them looked down-right ugly.
"Kurama, am I imagining things... or are there really demons over there dancing?" I inquired. The demons on the yacht were very strange. Of course, I had met very few demons. Kurama and Hiei were the only, really good demons that I knew well. I also knew Hiei's sister Yukina, but I hadn't seen her in ages, so she really didn't count.
"Yes. Some demons do enjoy dancing," he told me, chuckling. He found my lack of knowledge about my own kind amusing.
"It's not my fault I didn't know that," I retorted lightly. It wasn't like I had grown up with demons like he had. Considering that I only knew three demons, I believed that my ignorance was perfectly normal.
I noticed a demon in the corner with black hair. He was wearing mostly black and he had a katana strapped to his back. A white headband went around his forehead, and he was sipping some kind of drink. He was the only one in the whole room who was sitting alone.
"Poor demon's all by himself," I said sympathetically. "Can we go over and see him?"
Kurama smiled at me. "You certainly have a soft heart."
"C'mon," I pleaded, grabbing his hand and dragging him over to the lonely demon's table.
"What do you want?" the demon demanded to know, his voice cold.
"You looked like you needed someone to keep you company, so I decided to come over," I told him, smiling brightly. "I'm Kaline, and this is Kurama."
The demon's eyes lit up a little, but he had the tact to act normal. "I'm Hiei."
"Would you mind if we sat down with you?" I asked him, trying my best to sound sweet. Pretending that I didn't know one of my friends was hard.
"Do whatever you like; I don't care," Hiei replied, shrugging his shoulders. It was his normal attitude. He talked like that to almost everyone.
"Thank you," Kurama said politely as we sat down. He intertwined his fingers with mine under the table.
"Hiei, why are you here? On this yacht, I mean..." I inquired. I already knew the answer, but that didn't mean that I was suppose to.
"I'm a mercenary," he said coldly.
I shivered. It was rare when I heard him use that tone for so long with me. I knew that he was only acting, but I still didn't like it. "Kurama and I are too, but I'm also the officiator."
"Huh?" Hiei responded, sounding a little confused. "I thought the fights were just going to be a show of strength, not a competition."
"One of the crewmen asked me to," I told him, sounding very innocent. "I told him that I would. He was thinking that I would help raise moral or something."
"I can see where he would get that idea," Hiei commented, his tone softer than usual.
I looked at Hiei, very surprised. "Um..." I really wasn't use to him giving me compliments. Of course, he was still acting. How many male demons would look at a female demon and not comment on her looks?
"Would you like something to drink, Kaline?" Kurama asked, standing up. "I'm going to get something for myself."
"No, thank you," I said. "I'm fine." Which was true. I was actually warm again, which was wonderful. I really wasn't looking forward to going back to my room.
"Alright then. I'll be back in a moment," Kurama replied, walking over to the bar.
"It is rare for a demon to leave his lover with an stranger," Hiei said, looking right at me. Something flashed in his eyes. It was a warning. Hiei was warning me that Kurama was acting a little too trusting of him.
"Kurama has a great sense of judgment when it comes to fellow demons," I replied reassuringly. "He knows that he can trust you. I don't know how he knows, but he knows." I smiled at him brightly. "So why were you sitting all by yourself?"
"I always sit alone," he told me.
"So why did you chose to sit in here?" I gestured to the bar and dance floor. "Wouldn't you have been more alone in your room?"
"I like the music," Hiei responded quietly. "And I wanted something to drink." To prove a point he took a sip out of the glass in his hands.
"Oh." I wasn't quite sure what else I could say.
"Well, what has been going on since I left?" Kurama asked, sitting back down beside me with a drink in his hand.
"Hiei and I were just talking," I replied happily. "He is a very pleasant conversationalist."
"Hn. Whatever," Hiei mumbled.
I frowned slightly. Hiei was starting to try my patience a little bit. Normally, I gave him a small lecture when he started acting too cold. I couldn't do that while I was on the yacht. People might get suspicious if I started acting too friendly towards Hiei. Besides, I had acted like sweet, bubbly girl since I had gotten on the yacht so the crewmen wouldn't connect me with the Kaline they knew.
"Please, be nice," I pleaded, giving him a cute face. I was hoping that he would react to that.
"Sure thing," he muttered, crossing his arms. He didn't look thrilled, but he gave in a bit.
"Thank you," I said brightly. There were times when I really did enjoy getting my way, especially when it came to getting Hiei to act friendly.
"Kaline," Kurama said, looking over at me. "Would you like to dance?"
"You can dance?" I countered, amazed. I had never even thought that Kurama would dance. Well, I could see him waltzing, but that was about it.
"Yes," he replied, making me realize something. Kurama went to school like I did as the teenager Suichi. He spent part of his time acting like a high schooler, so he had probably gone to some school dances before.
"Then I would love to dance with you," I told him, giving him a smile. I stood up and followed him onto the dance floor.
Kurama dragged me to a corner and began dancing like any cool teenager would. He was an excellent dancer, much to my amazement.
I found myself blushing, but I danced along with him. I found it hard to believe that Kurama could dance like that. He just didn't seem the type. Yusuke, yeah, he would probably dance like any teen... but Kurama? Life was getting stranger by the minute.
"Is anything wrong?" Kurama whispered in my ear as he danced impossibly close.
"I just didn't think..." I paused. "I never imagined that you would dance, let alone dance like you are now."
"And what about your dancing?" he countered, raising an eyebrow at me. His yellow eyes sparkled with amusement.
"Well," I grimaced. "You do have a point there. But I'm still a teenager; you're not one... not really." I danced like most girls did. That was what I was use to doing. It never occurred to me to think about what Kurama would say about it.
"As Suichi, I am," he replied very softly, laughing.
"It seems... rather out of character," I admitted. "You're more mellow and sweet. I never considered you to have any bad boy in you."
"People can surprise you sometimes," he told me sweetly. "You surprised me."
"I enjoy surprising you," I said, putting my arms around his neck and burying my hands in his silver hair. "You look so cute when you're surprised or shocked."
"As do you." Kurama smiled and wrapped his arms about my waist. "And I've wondered for a while what it would be like to dance with you."
"Now that you know, what do you think?" I asked him, feeling very curious.
"I'm enjoying it as much as I thought that I would," Kurama replied as he ran his fingers through my hair, causing me to purr. "You like that?"
"I guess so," I answered, a little astonished. I had never purred before. It was probably because I was in my cat demon form. If cats could purr, then why couldn't cat demons? "Now the question of the day is whether or not fox demons can purr."
"I don't have a clue," he admitted, shrugging his shoulders slightly. The look in his eyes dared me to find out, and I gladly accepted the challenge. If Kurama was going to let me try, then I was all for it.
Reaching up, I began to rub and scratch his fox ears. They had fascinated me ever since he had been in his demon form. Even though I had cat ears on my own head, Kurama's ears were much more interesting.
Kurama didn't purr, but there was a low rumbling in the base of his throat. It was loud enough that I could hear it over the music, but not so loud that everyone on the dance floor could hear. He continued to make the noise until I stopped rubbing his ears.
"Well, you seemed to enjoy that," I commented as I put my arms back around his neck.
Kurama smiled a little devilishly. "I never knew that you had such a fascination with the ears. If I had known, then I would have transformed into my full demon form much sooner," he teased.
I looked at him, a bit shocked. Kurama had actually teased me? I hadn't minded, but it was a little strange. "I like your hair better when it's red though," I whispered softly, flashing him a smile. "And yellow eyes don't seem to glow as brightly as green ones."
"I'll have to remember that," he said, moving his hand to rub one of my ears.
I purred for a moment. "Okay," I whispered. "Now we need to figure out what to do about the fourth floor."
"I'll teleport down there tonight," he responded, his mouth right by one of my cat ears. "You can stay in the room and tell me what's going on upstairs."
"That way, if your presence is required in the room, I can tell you." I nodded my head slightly. His mouth remained where it was, his breath tickling my sensitive cat ears. "Kurama..." Did he have any idea what he was doing?
"What?" he asked, blowing softly.
"What do you think you're doing?" I demanded to know, my voice gentle. "That tickles." I couldn't help but giggle a little bit as he continued to breath into my ear.
"It does?" Kurama inquired wondrously. He sounded so surprised. I knew that he was faking.
"Can we go sit down for a while?" I asked him. I was getting a little hot and tired.
"Alright." He gave my ear a soft kiss and then led me back to the table.
I sat down in my seat across from Hiei. Kurama sat down next to me and took a sip from his drink.
"That display over there was not something I wanted to see," Hiei commented, his manner very calm.
"Oh," I replied. "Then you shouldn't have watched." I put my elbows on the table and rested my head on my hands. "I wonder when supper is. I'm suppose to officiate the first fight, which is right after supper, and I don't even have a clue when supper is."
"It's at six. The fight is at seven," Hiei told me, leaning back in his seat and crossing his arms. "You were suppose to know that already." The level of arrogance in his voice was astounding. He had acted like he was superior to me before, but that had been ages ago. Why was he suddenly acting so cold now?
"No one told me, Mr. Know-It-All," I retorted. "So how was I suppose to know?" I wasn't acting like the bubbly, happy person I was suppose to be, but I really didn't care at the moment. Hiei deserved to have his ego taken down a peg, and I was going to be the one to do it.
"Kaline, dinner starts in fifteen minutes. Perhaps you should get dressed for the fight since you might not have time after you eat?" Kurama suggested, his voice kind and patient. He was trying to effectively diffuse the situation. His voice immediately calmed me down.
"Ah... okay," I agreed and stood up. "We'll see you later, Hiei. Bye." I could not blow our cover by acting like myself. The mission was too important. I would not let Hiei's attitude annoy me.
Hiei turned his head away, looking like he didn't care. "Hn."
My temper flared up again, which Kurama quickly noticed.
"Let's go," Kurama said as he gently guided me out of the bar and dance club.
