Chapter Six: Embarrassing Situations
Eight o'clock that night...
It felt nice to be back in my room, even though it was cold. I sat on the edge of the bed, curled up in a small ball.
Kurama was in the bathroom, getting changed into some different clothes. He quickly emerged wearing his school uniform.
"Why are you wearing that?" I asked, pointing at his clothes. "Don't you think that it'll be easier to sneak around if you're wearing black?" His clothes were a reddish-purple, a definite attention-getter.
"If anyone does see me, I want them to think that I'm Suichi and not Youko Kurama," he replied, gently flicking one of my ears with a finger.
"Um... then perhaps you should lose the ears and tail," I suggested. "And you may want your red hair and green eyes back."
"Don't worry. I'm getting there," Kurama said teasingly. "Do you honestly think I'd forget something so important?"
"Yep," I joked back, smiling impishly.
Kurama laughed at me. "You're being silly again." He tweaked my nose and gave me a quick kiss.
"I know," I admitted, giggling. Sighing, I became serious. I couldn't joke around with Kurama all night. "You better transform into your human self so you can go. The sooner you leave, the sooner we'll know if there are humans down there."
He didn't answer, but he did summon up his spirit energy. In less than a second, he was back to his normal self.
"It'll take me a while to get around all the trap spells that are probably be down there, but I'll be back in a few hours," he told me, caressing the side of my face lovingly. "Promise." Kurama withdrew his hand and prepared to teleport.
"Wait," I said suddenly.
He froze, looking down at me. "What is it?"
I got up, went over to him, and buried my hands in his red hair. "Be careful," I whispered, giving him a kiss. "Come back to me in one piece." I was a little worried about him, although I wasn't quite sure why. He was an excellent fighter. Maybe it was because I didn't have a clue what kind of trap spells he would be up against.
"I will," Kurama promised, wrapping his arms around me. He gave me a gentle hug. "Now you may want to let me go so I can begin the exploration."
"Very well," I said with a soft sigh. "Take care."
With a wave, Kurama vanished. He had teleported down to level four.
While I waited for him, I tried to occupy myself. I read one of my books for a while, picked out what I was going to wear the next day, and even drew a few pictures. It was hard to keep my attention on something for very long. It was just too cold in the stupid room, but I couldn't leave. People would start to wonder if I went walking around without my 'lover'.
Stretching out my arms above my head, I got up off the bed. It was too cold so I was going to take a nice, long, very hot shower. Humming to myself, I went into the bathroom.
I took over an hour long shower. The hot water felt so nice, and I enjoyed being able to take as long as I wanted to wash my hair. I scrubbed every inch of my body, and even deep conditioned my hair. By the time I decided to get out of the shower, the mirror was steamed up, and the air smelled like strawberries and vanilla (my shampoo and shower gel).
I grabbed two towels, one to dry my hair with and one to wrap around my body. I had forgotten to grab my robe again. Go figure. I would just have to put it on once I got up enough courage to go out into the cold room.
It felt so warm in the bathroom that I was very reluctant to go out and get my pajamas. I had also forgotten to grab them before I had gone into the bathroom. Coming up with an idea, I opened up the door a few inches. The cold air from the room would now filter into the bathroom, giving me time to adjust to the difference.
To pass the time while the air slowly became colder, I unwrapped the towel from my hair and proceeded to brush it out. With a towel still wrapped around my body, I proceeded to braid my long hair for the night.
"I'm back," Kurama called out softly from the room. It felt nice to know that he had obviously come back safe and sound.
"I'm in the bathroom!" I told him as I just finished with my hair. I turned around to look at the door right as Kurama walked in.
Kurama blushed a deep red, staring at me for a moment before he could manage to close his eyes. "Gomen! Gomen!" he apologized immediately, backing out of the bathroom with his eyes still closed.
I was blushing as well, which didn't surprise me. "Ah..." I drifted off. What could I possibly say to Kurama after that? I was so thoroughly embarrassed that I didn't know what to do. I was not use to guys walking in on me while I was wearing only a towel. "Could you get me my robe out of the closet?"
"One moment," he replied quickly. I heard a door open and then close. An arm poked through the opening and held out my robe.
"Thank you, Kurama," I said graciously, accepting the robe. I wrapped it tightly around me and made sure to tie it securely closed. I walked out of the bathroom to find Kurama sitting on the bed, eyes squeezed shut and face still bright red.
"It's safe to look now," I told him gently. It was the truth. The robe covered my entire body all the way to my feet.
Kurama cautiously opened his eyes, giving a sigh of relief when he saw me. "I thought that you'd be angry with me," he admitted sheepishly.
"Do I look like I'm angry?" I asked. Kurama shook his head. "I was just surprised. It's not like you saw me naked or something. I did have a towel wrapped around me." I paused. "Besides, a towel covers more of my skin than my clothes do."
Kurama laughed, a very pleasant sound. "That is true." His green eyes were sparkling.
"So, did you discover anything?" I inquired, getting out a shirt and a pair of shorts for my nightclothes.
"No," Kurama told me sadly. "I only got a look at one room. There's at least twenty trap and lock spells in each room. It's going to take me quite a few nights to explore everything and deal with all the spells. I could sense them very easily. It was like I was being warned not to investigate any further." He stopped talking for a moment so he could gather his thoughts. "Some of the spells were rather nasty. All of them were powerful. It would be easier if I could just disarm all of those spells, but that would alert everyone to my presence."
"We'll just have to take our time," I replied, heading back to the bathroom with my clothes. "I'll be back out in a second." I closed the bathroom door behind me and quickly got changed. It felt much colder without the robe on, but the robe was damp, so I didn't want to wear it anymore. I hung up the robe on a hook and went back into the room.
I sat down on the bed next to Kurama. He was still in his normal form.
"Shouldn't you change into you fox demon form?" I asked him. "What if someone comes in on us?"
"I wouldn't worry too much about that," Kurama answered. "The door is locked, and it has been designed to keep people out."
"Oh," I said, quickly catching on. No one liked strange people walking in on them, especially demons. "Well, the bathroom's free." I gestured towards the bathroom. "You can take a shower now if you wish."
"Thank you. I think I will," Kurama replied, getting up. He gathered all the things he would need and went into the bathroom. He poked his head back out a moment later, his muscular chest bare. "What's that smell?"
"You mean the bathroom?" I inquired, admiring his muscles. "That's my strawberry shampoo and vanilla shower gel. I used them earlier."
"They smell really nice," he said sweetly, closing the door behind him. After a few seconds, I could hear the water running.
Smiling and shivering, I curled up under the covers. I felt a little better after that, but the blanket wasn't very thick. I still felt very cold, and I still shook.
Ten minutes later, I heard Kurama shut off the water. After another five minutes, Kurama came out of the bathroom wearing only a pair of red plaid boxers.
I turned my head to the side, blushing furiously. Why did Kurama have to wear that to bed? His wardrobe consisted of long sleeved shirts and long pants, so I wasn't use to seeing his skin. Yes, I had seen his chest during a battle, but that was because his shirt had gotten torn and such. To see him walking around like that was strange. The worst part was, he looked so damn fine dressed like that.
"How is this going to work, Kaline," Kurama asked, pointing to the bed.
"Well, you can sleep on one half, and I'll sleep on the other," I told him. "The bed's big enough that it shouldn't be a problem."
Kurama understood what I meant. From now until we got off the yacht, there would be an invisible line down the middle of the bed. He was to stay on his side, and I would stay on mine. The line was not to be crossed by either individual, which I thought sounded very fair.
"Okay," he replied, shutting off the light and getting into his half of the bed. He got under the covers like I was. He was lying near the edge of the bed, showing me that he respected my decision.
Curling up into an even tighter ball to ward off the chill, I began to pray that Kurama didn't snore. I was also hoping that he couldn't hear my teeth chattering.
After five minutes went by, I heard Kurama move. I looked over at his side of the bed. He had sat up and scooted closer to the middle. I couldn't help but wonder what he was doing.
"Kaline, you're freezing cold, aren't you?" Kurama asked, his voice soft and gentle. "I can hear your teeth chattering."
"Yes," I admitted, rubbing my arms. "But I'll be fine. Don't worry. Just try to get some sleep."
"And what about you?" he countered. "How are you going to get some sleep while you're so cold?"
"I'll fall asleep eventually," I told him, my voice firm. I continued to shiver, and I had a feeling that my lips were going to turn blue soon.
Kurama waited a few minutes, then laid back down under the covers. I could tell that he was right on the imaginary line.
"Kaline," Kurama said. He hesitated for a moment, but he continued. "Why don't you come here. You're never going to get any sleep if you're cold."
I stared at him for a moment, my cat eyes easily making out his form in the darkness. He was offering to help keep me warm, but that would mean me actually cuddling with him in a bed. I didn't like the implications of that. Yet, I was dressed, and Kurama was dressed... sort of. I trusted him with my life. Kurama was a gentleman. He wouldn't take advantage of me.
"Thank you," I said finally, moving over so that I was a few inches away from him. I could feel the heat that his body was giving off, which I hoped would keep me warm. I was still very reluctant to even lay a finger on him while we were in the bed.
"Would you be this hesitant if we were in the park?" Kurama asked me.
"No," I answered honestly. The park was different. Kurama was dressed when we were in the park, nor were we in a bed there. It wasn't that I was afraid of Kurama, I was just afraid to be so close to him in a very... marriage-like situation.
"Then pretend that's where we are," he told me, his voice kind and trusting.
I sighed softly. "Okay." I was cold and Kurama was doing his best to help me. He also didn't want to make me uncomfortable. I was embarrassed that I was so close to Kurama. I wasn't sure if my guardian would approve. Of course, I was almost 18 years old, which meant that I was almost an adult. I would soon be on my own and have the freedom to make my own decisions without having someone constantly looking over my shoulder. I felt safe around Kurama, and I did trust him, so I didn't see anything wrong with accepting his offer.
Kurama put his arm around me and pulled me closer. I rested my hands against his muscular chest. I felt wonderfully warm and safe wrapped in Kurama's embrace. Finally, I let sleep wash over me as I breathed in his clean scent and listened to the rhythmic beating of his heart.
