Chapter Eight: Kaline's fight
After supper...
Kurama and I walked to the fighting arena, his arm around my shoulders. I was feeling very content and happy, which didn't surprise me. I was even humming softly. It had been a very, very good day so far.
"I wonder who's fighting tonight," I said, my joy carrying over into my tone of voice.
"I believe that it is suppose to be a surprise," Kurama told me as we entered the coliseum. He seemed to be extremely happy as well.
Many demons and humans were already in the stands. About twenty mercenaries were lounging about around the stage. The guy who had threatened me earlier was nearby. He came over with a smirk on his face.
"Are you ready to become mine?" he asked arrogantly.
"I belong to Kurama," I told him, my voice mellow and soft. I really didn't feel like dealing with him, but I was too happy to snap at him or scare him off.
"But he hasn't marked you!" the demon retorted, frowning. He even looked a little worried.
Kurama moved his arm so the other demon could see my shoulder and the mark. "You were saying?" Kurama inquired coldly, his golden eyes narrowing angrily at the demon.
"But... wha-" he cut off his protest when Kurama growled at him. Fear began to show on his face, even though he was obviously trying to hide it.
I looked up at Kurama, smiled, then turned back to the jerk. "I told you. I belong to Kurama. You no longer have the right to even think about making me yours." I cuddled up closer to Kurama, my head on his chest and my arms around him. "Now, baka, will you please go away?"
The demon stomped off, mumbling insults under his breath.
"That was interesting," I commented, sounding amused. "That was the fastest I've ever seen a guy run off." I giggled. "His frown was so deep when I told him that I was yours."
"Really?" Kurama inquired, a big smile on his face. "I was smiling."
"You were?" I asked, staring at him wondrously. He nodded his head. "Well, I'm yours from now until the end of time."
"Hmmm... Is that a promise?" he wondered, looking down at me lovingly.
I nodded my head, adoring that look on his face. "Of course. What else could it possibly be? I love you, and I'm not about to leave you for any reason... or any guy."
"You have no idea how much I love to hear you say that you love me," Kurama commented, nuzzling my neck. "And I love you too."
"And what about all the other girl demons?" I teased gently, thoroughly enjoying how sweet he was acting.
"I've marked you. All other female demons are now beyond my reach," he replied, kissing the mark he had made on me not all that long ago. "Females always know if a male demon has ever marked someone. No one knows how they know, but they just seem to know."
"How interesting," I stated. "We shall have to talk more about this tonight after the matches." With a kiss, I left Kurama and went up onto the stage, grabbing the microphone from its place as I walked.
A vast majority of the audience roared when I got up on the stage, which was a great surprise to me. Many of them seemed to be very excited.
"Are you all ready for a fight?!" I shouted enthusiastically. The audience yelled back. "Good, because today we have..." I drifted off when I saw the screen. I was suppose to fight against some guy named Seppuka. Great. "It looks like Seppuka and I get to fight. Well, um... who's gonna officiate?"
"Excuse me!" a female voice shouted. "Coming through!" A familiar fox demon was working her way around the lounging mercenaries. "Hey, Kaline!" The fox demon got up on the stage. "I get to officiate this fight in your place."
"Well, Koto," I greeted her. "It's nice to know that an experienced officiator is going to keep a running commentary on my fight." I smiled and handed her the microphone.
Koto had been the officiator for part of the dark tournament. She wasn't so bad, even though she loved violence a little too much for my tastes. She was fair when it came to fights, even if one of the fighters was a human.
"Thanks," she said brightly, accepting the microphone. She began talking to the audience, the microphone close to her mouth. "Now, if Seppuka will kindly get in the arena, we'll start the match!"
A male demon with ice blue hair and eyes got onto the stage. He looked very human, except for his pointed ears. He was dressed in a large, long- sleeved, black shirt and baggy, black pants. He was barefooted, but he did have wrist bands on both arms. The spirit energy I sensed coming from him was strong. He was a powerful demon and a good fighter.
The worst part was the fact that he was an ice demon. I was going to be blue by the time the match was over, which was not good. I hated the cold with a passion.
"Well, Kaline, I can see that the fool finally marked you," Seppuka commented, voice neutral. "I was wondering when he would. Anyone can see that he wants you."
"Thanks for the opinion," I replied, giving him a shrug. He didn't seem too bad-natured, and I wondered if I actually wouldn't mind fighting him. I really did wish that he hadn't called Kurama a fool. Kurama was not a fool, nor would he ever be one.
Koto raised an arm then let it drop. "LET THE FIGHT BEGIN!!"
Quick as lightning, Seppuka launched himself at me, ice surrounding one of his fists. I easily dodged him. It was strange at how much faster I was in my demon form. Normally, I would have been very slow compared to a speedy demon.
I counterattacked, my body moving even faster than his. In less than a fraction of a second, I kicked him in the stomach, punched him in the face, and knocked him to the ground with a downward kick.
Seppuka got up, laughing quietly as he did so. He didn't appear to be badly hurt, and he actually seemed to be amused.
"That was unbelievable!!" Koto shouted. "Both fighters are so incredibly fast, I can't even see them move. One minute, their facing each other, and the next moment one of them is on the ground!"
"You're much faster than I expected," Seppuka told me, smiling. "I was hoping that I would get a challenge."
"I'm more of a challenge than you bargained for," I replied, smirking. "I'm going to defeat you."
Seppuka laughed again. "I would love to see that."
"Sure thing." Using more speed than before, I swung at him. My fist landed in the middle of his chest, sending him flying.
Seppuka did a fancy flip in the air and landed on his feet. "Now that's more like it," he said brightly. "Now how about I change the arena a little bit?"
With a burst of spirit energy, he turned the floor to ice. The air around him became much colder, and the icy air spread until the entire coliseum was like a winter's day.
"Amazing! Seppuka turned everything ice cold! What could his motivation be for doing that?" Koto shouted, shivering as she talked.
I was already shaking and turning blue from the temperature, which Seppuka smiled at. "I'm not going to stop fighting just because it's cold," I stated, my voice firm. I was not that easy to defeat.
"Don't you see?" Seppuka inquired, curiosity in his voice. "The ice will slow down your movements. You'll slip and slide on the floor if you go too fast. Not to mention that the cold weather will enhance my attacks."
"Perhaps it is about time that I unveiled one of my abilities," I said, summoning up my spirit energy. Wind began to swirl around me. Strangely enough, the wind was colored the same bright blue as my demon eyes. I had never used a special attack before, but I felt that now was as good a time as any. "Wind of the Banshee!" I pointed at Seppuka, making the wind leave me and whoosh around Seppuka.
The wind began to cut Seppuka in hundreds of places at once. Unfortunately, Seppuka beat back the attack after a moment with a large burst of energy.
"That was nothing more than pinpricks," he commented, sounding very disappointed in me.
"It seems that Kaline's awesome-looking attack was easily defeated by a simple move on Seppuka's part," Koto announced. "Is this fight amazing or what?!"
"Just wait," I responded simply. That attack would have an important role a little later in the fight, but some time would just have to pass before that role would be revealed.
Without warning, Seppuka attacked me. He was moving much faster than before. I tried to dodge, but he caught a hold of my foot. With a mighty swing, he sent me into the ground.
"Kaline tried to dodge that attack, but failed miserably. She's paying for that failure now," Koto told the audience.
I hit the ground with more force than I was use to. When I got up, groaning a little bit, I noticed that I had made a very noticeable dent in the ground. I dusted myself off as Seppuka moved in for the attack again. I was ready and waiting for him. Using a simple move, I side stepped right as he tried to punch me. I grabbed his arm and 'helped' him along with a hard tug in the direction he was already moving. He went flying into the wall, leaving an even bigger dent in it than I had in the floor.
"Ouch," I commented, wincing slightly. That could not have felt very pleasant. In fact, there was a good chance that he was unconscious.
"That had to have hurt!" Koto stated, watching to ice demon with bright eyes.
Much to my disappointment, Seppuka quickly got back into the ring. He brushed himself off and then turned to me. "Ice blade!" he cried, causing many long, ice crystals to form in the air. With a wave, he sent the ice crystals shooting after me.
"It seems that Seppuka isn't done yet. He's still going strong," Koto shouted, moving farther away from the fight.
With many near impossible moves and turns, I managed to avoid the majority of the ice crystals. A few still did hit me, drawing blood. Getting angry, I decided to use another attack. "Breath of the faeries!" I shouted, summoning up my spirit energy once more. The wind that appeared was bright blue with sparkling lights in it. My new attack was much more powerful than the last. Gesturing towards Seppuka, I made the wind attack him.
The tiny lights in the wind shot through his body, making little holes through his arms, chest, and legs. The wind continued to slice and cut him like before.
Seppuka finally began to show signs of tiring. "What's going on?" he inquired, sounding confused. "I shouldn't be so weak already. You haven't done that much damage to me." He was on his hands and knees now.
"Something's wrong with Seppuka!" Koto commented. "What could it possibly be? Have we missed something important?"
I walked over to him while my wind continued to swirl about him. "Yes, I have. The first attack put a special poison in your blood stream. It is not life threatening, but you will be weak for the next few days. The poison takes a few minutes to show any effects, but it does work. My other attack just weakened you, making it easier for the poison to work."
"Looks like you almost got me beat," Seppuka admitted, forcing himself to stand up while my wind continued to wound him. "But I'm not down just yet."
"Very well," I said with a sigh. "If you refuse to stay down..." Using my speed, I delivered one kick to his stomach, sending him flying out of the ring. He hit the wall, fell down, and stayed there.
Koto began to count. "One... Two... Three... Four..." Seppuka tried to get up, but he failed. "Five... Six... Seven..." The ice demon tried again, and he finally succeeded. He was still outside of the ring though. "Eight... Nine..." He walked toward the arena at a slow pace, but he couldn't make it in time. The poison had finally taken full effect. "Ten! Kaline is the winner!!!"
Resuming my shivering, I got out of the ring with one last word to Koto. "You can officiate the rest of the fights for today. I'm tired."
"Um... okay," she replied, confusion written all over her face. Her expression becoming happy once again, she announced the next fighters.
I walked over to Kurama and let him draw me close to him. I was cold, and he knew it. I felt much warmer in his embrace.
"Would you care to go outside to warm up?" Kurama asked me, his tone of voice very sweet.
"Yes, very much," I replied, and let him lead me to the deck.
On the deck, I sat down in one of the large lounge chairs, but Kurama didn't sit down next to me.
"You've been hurt," he said simply. "So hold still while I heal you." Before I could respond, he lightly touched all my wounds, quickly and effectively healing them.
"Thank you," I told him, smiling as I inspected the once-bleeding areas.
Kurama laid down on the lounge chair and pulled me down next to him. He wrapped his arms around me and gave me a quick kiss. "That was a very interesting battle," he commented. "I was worried about you for a while."
"You really shouldn't have been. I can take care of myself," I replied, resting my head on his chest.
"That's partially my job now," he stated suddenly. He quickly clarified himself. "Demons look after their mates. Male demons are especially suppose to help out, care for, and protect their lover."
"I guess the impulse to protect comes with the feeling of possessiveness, doesn't it?" I asked, laying one of my hands on his chest. Cuddling with Kurama felt so natural.
"That it does," Kurama answered. "But there's not much I can do about it."
"I'm not asking you to do anything about it," I told him, smiling brightly. "I rather like your possessiveness and urge to keep me safe. I am yours after all. It does make sense that you would act that way towards me."
Kurama chuckled. "One would think that you wouldn't like that. You were raised as a human, and human females are not very fond of the possessiveness of males."
"I'm half demon, remember?" I reminded him. "So I think that it's natural for me to like how male demons are suppose to act towards their mates." I sighed and snuggled up a little closer to him. "It's so nice out here. Too bad we need to go back to our room soon."
"It would be a good idea to take advantage of all the extra time Koto inadvertently supplied us," Kurama told me.
"I know," I murmured. "Just thirty more minutes, and I'll be ready to go back into the cold room. Just give me thirty minutes."
"Of course," he replied, hugging me to him tightly. "Thirty minutes."
