Chapter Nine: Hiei's Temper
Half an hour later...
"Looks like you're ready to go," I said, gathering up my stuff for my shower.
"Just about," Kurama responded. He was in his human form again as well as his school uniform. I was in my human form, too. I had transformed the instant the door to our room had been shut and locked.
"Just about?" I repeated. Kurama certainly looked ready to go. He didn't need to take anything with him, and as long as I was in the room, he didn't have to worry about anyone coming to the room and not finding him there. "What have you forgotten? What is there to forget."
"Only this," he replied, giving me a quick kiss. "Wish me luck."
"Good luck," I told him, smiling right as he teleported away.
Hoping that Kurama would discover something, I went into the bathroom with my nightclothes. I turned on the shower and adjusted the water. Kurama didn't like his showers nearly as hot as I liked mine. After taking a quick look at myself in the mirror, I quickly stripped and hopped into the shower. It was hot, and I knew that my skin would be red afterwards, but I really didn't care.
My shower ended up being over an hour long, which didn't bother me at all. I wasn't the one who was paying the water bill. The demons that ran the yacht were going to pay it. I couldn't help feeling a little sorry for them... but only a very little.
After shampooing and conditioning my hair and scrubbing my entire body, I shut off the water, got out, and quickly dried off. Once I was dry, I got dressed. There was no way Kurama was going to see me in just a towel again. That incident had been a little too embarrassing for my liking.
Remembering my promise to Kurama, I left my hair un-braided, but I did brush it out a little. Bored and cold, I brought out my drawing notebook and sat down on the bed. I spent the next two hours sketching off of pictures taken of the spirit world.
Time passed very slowly as I waited for Kurama to get back. While he was gone, I was trapped in the room. I couldn't leave, and no one could come in to see me.
At ten o'clock, Kurama came back. I was working on a picture of him in his fox demon form.
"That's a very good drawing," he commented, leaning over my shoulder to take a look. He was smiling bright at me. He really did seem to like sketch, probably because it was of him.
"Thank you," I replied, setting down my pencil. "So how did it go?" I was curious. I was really hoping that he had found something to hint at whether the rumors were true or not.
"I found nothing but spells," Kurama answered sadly. "But-"
He was cut off by a knock on the door. Someone had decided to pay us a visit.
In a flash, both Kurama and myself assumed our demon forms. I answered the door, just opening it a crack. I saw Hiei standing outside the door, his arms crossed.
"Well, hello, Hiei!" I greeted him happily, fully opening up the door. I moved aside so the fire demon could come in. I hadn't been expecting Hiei to visit Kurama and me in our room, but I wasn't about to tell him to leave.
Hiei completely ignored me and went over to Kurama. "What do you think you're doing?!" He glared at the kitsune, furious about something.
Hiei was shouting, which greatly surprised me. Hoping that no one had heard him shout, I closed the door so the rest of the conversation wouldn't be overheard.
"Um... I was going to talk to Kaline, take a shower, then go to bed," Kurama replied, very confused. He didn't have a clue as to what had gotten his friend so upset.
"I'm not talking about that!" Hiei snapped. Something Kurama had done had obviously gotten under Hiei's skin. "You actually marked her! I can not believe you did that! Don't you remember the implications of that?!"
"Of course," Kurama answered simply, his manner very calm. He was use to Hiei's temper, although it had never really been fully aimed at him before.
"And what about Kaline? Does she understand everything that the marking entails?" Hiei demanded to know angrily. "Does she know that the mark means that she belongs to you? That you two are now tied together for the rest of your lives?!"
"I'm right here," I said quietly, feeling a little annoyed. "If you wish to know the answers to your questions, I suggest that you talk to me." I paused to allow Hiei time to process what I had just said. "Yes, I do know what the mark means. I'm now Kurama's. He has claimed me as his mate. All other male demons will now know that I'm off limits, and all other females demons will know that Kurama is off limits."
"He basically married you demon-style!" Hiei shouted at me.
"There's no need to yell so loudly," I protested, rubbing my cat ears. They were much more sensitive than my human ears. "And I don't see why you're making such a big deal out of this. I asked Kurama to mark me."
"This is a big deal, and what were you thinking when you asked him to mark you?!" Hiei asked, still upset. He thought that Kurama and I were making fools of ourselves.
"Relax, Hiei," I told him, voice soft and gentle. "I know exactly what I was thinking, and the dominant thought on my mind was how much I liked the idea of belonging to Kurama. Someday, I might even marry him human-style." Hiei's concern was nice, but it really wasn't needed. I could take care of myself, as could Kurama.
Hiei almost fell over, but he quickly recovered. "Hn. Whatever." He shrugged his shoulders, then shivered slightly. "Why is it so cold in here?" He had forced himself to calm down, which didn't surprise me. Hiei had a habit of quickly getting angry, and then, just as quickly, calming down. He liked to have control over his emotions.
"It's the couple's room," Kurama replied, barely holding back his laughter. "They keep it cold so lovers can't go to bed angry at each other." He found Hiei's change of subject rather pathetic.
"You mean that you...?" Hiei drifted off, blushing. He had problems when Kurama and I kissed, so it didn't surprise me that he would have serious problems thinking about us doing anything else more intimate.
"NO!!" I shouted, shaking my head violently. "We've done nothing of the sort." I couldn't believe that Hiei would have his mind so far in the gutter.
"Then how do you...?" The fire demon looked at me, a small amount of confusion on his face. He knew that I couldn't stand the cold. He was probably wondering why I wasn't shivering and freezing at the moment. The reason I wasn't feeling very cold was because I was too busy trying to hold back my laughter. I had never seen Hiei so embarrassed before. It was hilarious to see the demon blush at the simple task of asking a harmless question.
"We cuddle, nothing more," I told him, sighing. "And I'm going to do nothing more until I get married... human-style."
Hiei turned to leave. "I'll see you two tomorrow."
"Bye, Hiei," Kurama said, smiling. He was still holding back laughter.
"Hn." Hiei gave Kurama a half smile, then left, closing the door behind him.
I went and locked the door again, immediately breaking out into laughter. "Hiei blushed...." More laughter. "He actually was..." Giggles. "Yelling at you for marking me..." Continued laughter. "Hiei was..." Even more laughter. "So embarrassed."
"I know," Kurama replied, shaking his head. He was about to start laughing as well, but he didn't. "I've never seen him like that before. The closest he's come to getting that angry is when he sees Kuwabara hitting on Yukina." Kuwabara had the biggest crush on Hiei's little sister Yukina. It was so funny to see how much Kuwabara would blush. He even said the stupidest things around her, although Yukina thought that he was so sweet. Yukina's naiveté level was very high.
I finally got myself under control after a few minutes of almost non-stop laughter. "It's too bad that I can't tell my best friend back home about this. She would die laughing." I transformed into my human self.
"You know that it's not a good idea to tell humans anything about all this," Kurama said, putting a hand under my chin and pressing up so I was looking at him. "Koenma wants as few people to know as possible."
"I know that," I replied, sighing. "Plus, she'd probably think I was insane if I told her that I was friends with two demons and that I went on missions like James Bond."
Kurama chuckled. "I'm not quite sure who this James Bond is, but your friend would most likely not believe you."
"I thought that was obvious," I retorted softly. "Now, you were about to tell me something else before Hiei interrupted us."
"They have demons down there patrolling a few rooms. I got through quite a few of the rooms, and I found that rooms that are being patrolled are all in a straight line." Kurama gathered up his bathing things and set them on the edge of the bed.
"Did any of the demons see you?" I asked, worry in my voice. If Kurama had been spotted, then security would increase.
"No," Kurama replied. "They weren't the brightest demons in Makai. The idiots weren't even doing a good job of watching their areas. It was easy to sneak around them. A few of them were even flirting with a female demon down there."
"Who were they flirting with?" I inquired, coming up with a plan.
"I really don't know," he admitted.
"Can you describe her then?" I wondered, really hoping that I could get my idea to work.
"Yeah," he answered. "She had short blond hair and orange eyes. The girl had a long finger nails and a lizard-like tail. Her skin was orange as well."
"That should be enough to help me figure out who she is," I said brightly, sitting down on the edge of the bed. "I'll have to talk to her and find out if she knows why the men are down there. I'll also have to ask how she gets down there. The door is suppose to be locked."
"Hmmm... I do wonder about that," Kurama commented, picking his bathing things back up. "I'm going to go take my shower now." He transformed into his human self and went into the bathroom.
Fifteen minutes later, he was back out of the bathroom with wet hair and his boxer shorts on. He looked just as fine as before. I couldn't help but wonder if he was tempting me. But, no... that wasn't like Kurama. He was not the type to go and tempt me like that.
"I believe that you said this morning that I could braid you hair," Kurama stated, picking up my brush and a ponytail.
"I did indeed," I replied, nodding my head slightly. "So are you going to braid it?"
"Yes, of course," he said. "I told you that I would hold you to your promise." He got behind me and began brushing my hair. This time, since I was a human, I did not purr. I did enjoy letting him play with my hair. Eventually, he stopped brushing my hair and put it in a simple braid.
"Thank you," I told him, smiling as I turned to look at him. "That's so much better."
"C'mon, let's get some sleep now," Kurama suggested, getting up and turning off the light. "We're going to have an interesting day tomorrow." I nodded my head in agreement, although he couldn't see me. The other days had been interesting, so I didn't see why tomorrow would be any different.
I got under the covers and laid in the center of the bed. Kurama got in a moment later, put his arm around me, and pulled me close. Warm and happy, I fell asleep just moments later.
