Chapter One: An Interrupted Date
"Kurama!" I shouted, waving to him from across the street.
The red head turned to me and smiled. He seemed very happy to see me, which made perfect sense since we were a couple.
Being careful not to get hit by any cars, I ran across the street and gave him a hug. It was my normal greeting to him.
"You seem overly happy," Kurama said with a laugh. "Is it because you're excited to see me?"
"There is that of course..." I admitted, a hint of a joke in my voice. "But there's something else."
"What?" he asked, very curious. Kurama had no problem with my jokes or sarcasm. He actually seemed to enjoy them.
"Summer vacation started today. I have no school for three months," I replied, smiling brightly. "That means that I can spend as much time as I like here, and I don't have to worry about time travel." I lived in another dimension. To visit Kurama, I had to open a portal. During the school year, I had to time travel to get back home so I could do my homework and chores and such.
It felt wonderful to know that I would finally be able to let my biological clock fix itself. Time travel always did a number on it. Plus, it would be easier on my spirit energy.
"So are you here to celebrate?" Kurama wondered. "Or is a demon coming?" He and the other spirit detectives constantly joked that I only appeared when there was a demon coming to fight. I often went to Kurama's dimension to help him and the other spirit detectives fight enemy demons. I had one of the strangest abilities to sense danger coming. The ability came in very handy at times.
What was very strange was that Kurama didn't have that ability. About a year ago I had healed a hole in Kurama's stomach and accidentally gave him the same powers that I possessed. It was very strange, and I still had no clue how it had happened.
"I haven't sensed any demons in a while. You're free from fighting for a bit," I told him.
"Good," he said. "Now, I want you to close your eyes." His eyes sparkled mischievously. He was up to something, and I wanted to know what.
"Why?" I asked him, intensely curious. Kurama wasn't going to get my to comply so easily. I had a backbone, which he loved.
"Because I have a surprise for you," he answered. "Now... close your eyes." He looked me in the eyes. His eyes told me that he wasn't going to do anything until I did as he said.
At his insistence, I did as he requested. My curiosity also forced me to give in to his demand. I was too curious for my own good. My guardian was constantly saying 'curiosity killed the cat'. I wasn't a cat, so how could curiosity kill me?
I heard shuffling movements, like he was pulling something out of his jacket or sleeve. Whatever Kurama had in his sleeve or jacket had to be small. He wouldn't have been able to fit anything large into them.
"Can I open my eyes now?" I inquired, trying my best to wait patiently. Unfortunately, I found it near impossible to contain my curiosity and excitement. I really wanted to see the surprise.
"Yes, you may look now," Kurama told me, chuckling. He found me amusing for some reason.
I opened my eyes, smiling in anticipation. What I saw was Kurama holding out something to me. It was a single, red rose that had just begun to bloom. He had been kind enough to make sure that all the thorns had been removed from the stem.
Taking the offered rose from him, I gave him a kiss. "Thank you, Kurama! This is so beautiful. I love it."
I did love the rose. I loved how sweet Kurama was to me. I loved his kind, sweet voice and attitude. I loved his flaming red hair and gorgeous green eyes. Basically, I loved everything about Kurama because I was in love with him. Thankfully, he loved me back.
"I thought you'd like it," he commented, giving me a bright, happy smile. He put his arm around my shoulders.
"I always like what you get me," I told him. Kurama surprised me every once in a while with a gift. For Christmas he had gotten me a diamond flower necklace and matching earrings. The necklace gave me a power boost, and the earring allowed me to contact any of the spirit detectives if I needed to.
I even distinctly remembered the last flower Kurama had given me. It had been during the dark tournament on Hang Neck Island. He had been fighting against a weak demon named Roto. Roto almost beat Kurama by using dirty methods. With a seed, Kurama had turned his opponent into plant food for a flowering bush. Before leaving the fighting arena, the victorious Kurama had picked a single exotic flower which he gave to me a moment later with a promise that he would never die and leave me alone.
I still had that flower. I had pressed it in a book, using my magic to preserve its fragrance and color for the rest of eternity.
"That's good to hear," Kurama said. "Now would you care to go for a walk in the park?"
"Of course, I would," I replied instantly, leaning my head against his shoulder. "I haven't been to a park in ages. It's probably lovely this time of year."
Kurama gave me a quick squeeze. "Let's go enjoy this warm weather then."
Talking about many different things, we walked to the park. It didn't take very long, nor more than a few minutes. Even with the traffic and congested sidewalks, I enjoyed my time with Kurama.
At the park, there were children running around, laughing and playing with others. Adults stood nearby, watching their children with attentive, sharp eyes.
I sighed happily. It was a perfect way to spend an afternoon. I couldn't imagine anything better. It was sunny, warm, and pleasant outside. Of course, I always treasured my time with Kurama.
We chose to walk down a path lined with many flowers. I knew that Kurama loved flowers because he used them for his attacks. His spirit energy was bonded to them. Me, well... I just liked flowers because they were pretty.
"This place is beautiful, Kurama," I said, giving him a kiss on the cheek. "Thank you for coming here with me."
"There's no need to thank me," Kurama replied. "I just wanted to spend some time with you."
"Ditto," I stated with a small laugh. My time with Kurama was always filled with joy and laughter. I usually had problems forcing myself to leave when it was time to go home.
"I really hate to spoil the moment," a girl said as she approached. "But Koenma wishes to speak with the two of you. I'm to take you to the spirit world immediately."
"Well, Botan, this is an interesting surprise," I commented. "Why does Koenma want to see us?"
"I really don't know," Botan answered. "Now, c'mon. Koenma was most insistent." She grabbed both our hands, silencing Kurama's protests, and proceed to drag us to the spirit world.
It was a horrible way to end a date.
