Kurama and Hiei sat at Genkai's kitchen table eating breakfast. Well, actually, neither of them were really eating. Hiei didn't eat at Genkai's much, and Kurama was still a little upset about yesterday. He really hadn't meant to push Kita that hard. He knew that was what he had to do and that it was only going to help her in the long run. But she just looked so tired and in so much pain. So dead. The look in her eyes. It was like she still wanted to keep going. That had to have been Ayame's doing. Kita's energy was gone within the first hour. Had Kurama realized this, he would've backed off. He knew he shouldn't be, but he was starting to...
"Hey, kitsune," Hiei's voice snapped him out of his thoughts. Kurama looked up from his breakfast. "Are you gonna eat that hash brown?" Kurama chuckled and shook his head. He handed his hash brown to the fire and ice demon. Hiei muttered a 'hn' as a thank you and took it. "What's wrong with you?"
"Hm? Oh, nothing," Kurama replied and smiled slightly. Hiei didn't believe him. But he knew it wasn't anything too serious, so he stayed out of it. Besides, he didn't really care all that much.
Kurama looked at his watch. It was 6:30. Damn, he needed to sleep in later sometimes. Who was up willingly this early in the morning? Besides Hiei.
"Hey, guys," came a voice from behind him. He turned around to see who it was, even though he already knew. It was Kita. "What's up?" She smiled and sat down next to Kurama and began to eat the food that was originally meant for Hiei, even though they all knew Hiei would never eat it. He much preferred other people's food.
Kurama just looked at her, looked at his watch again, then looked back at her. She was so dead last night. How was she standing, this awake, at 6:30 in the morning?
Kita noticed the fox staring at her. She just smiled and shook her head. Kurama laughed under his breath. He really had underestimated her.
Kita knew what he was thinking. How the hell was she up at 6:30 in the morning after the hell she went through yesterday? Actually, she was kinda wondering that herself. Her body ached all over. Yet miraculously, her body just woke up at 5:30 and wouldn't go back to sleep. So she got up. She figured she might as well get a head start on day of hell #2.
Meanwhile, Hiei was watching this whole scene unfold. He knew Kurama was beginning to like Kita, even though they both knew that getting involved with her was not a good thing to do. She had some of the most powerful demons in demon world after her. The last thing they needed was for Kurama to get too involved and get killed trying to save the fire fox. But Hiei also knew that once Kurama made up his mind, there was no changing it.
'This is going to be interesting...,' he thought to himself.
~*~*~*~
By seven, Kurama, Kita and Hiei were all out at the training grounds. The sun was out, and it was pretty hot, at least 90 degrees. Kita decided to hell with the combat clothes. She wore a pair of jean shorts and a white tank top. Her hair was tied up in a high ponytail, and once again, her tear drop pendant was around her neck. On her feet, she wore a pair of white sneakers. This time, she was prepared for any running she had to do.
"Where is she, Hiei?" Kurama asked him. Hiei shrugged. She should've been here by now...
Just as he thought that, the three of them heard a loud commotion from behind them. They spun around, expecting either a huge band of demons or Yusuke practicing his spirit gun. It was neither. All they saw was a rather short girl, around 5'2", standing by what used to be a forest of trees. Now they just lay in a pile. The girl stood there with a look fear on her face, turned around too look at the trees, turned back around and grinned. Hiei, Kurama, and Kita looked at each other and sweatdropped.
As the girl walked over to them, Kita could get a better view of her appearance. She was actually only a couple inches shorter than Kita. She had very confusing hair. It was past her chin in the front, went up at an angle, and in the back it was very short. It was bright red. She had reddish brown eyes. She wore a pair of black jean shorts and a crimson red rank top. She had on black combat boots and around her waist was a belt containing a sheathed katana. Around her neck was a short silver chain with a dog tag. She looked like she was extremely proud of herself for what she had just done.
"Uh...what did you just do...?" Kurama asked slowly. Oh, Genkai was going to kill her. And him, because he was the one in charge of the two girls right now.
"Showoff...," Hiei muttered. In a flash, the girl was behind Hiei with her katana at his throat. Hiei smirked and got ready to counterattack but Kurama stopped him.
"Guys! Stop! I'm not gonna be responsible for two corpses on Genkai's property," he exclaimed, which was rare for Kurama. He was usually so in control of his emotions. Regardless, the girl put the katana back in her sheath and backed away from Hiei, but stared him straight in the eye. She was shorter than he was, but only by a few inches.
"I'll get you one of these days, Hiei," she said and smirked. Hiei did the same. Kurama just rolled his eyes.
"Kita, this is Zanna," he said. "Zanna, this is Ayame's reincarnation, Kita." Zanna turned away from Hiei and extended her hand to Kita.
"Zanna, fire wolf demon. Sixteen human years old. Current residence: Genkai's temple," she grinned. "Please to meet ya." Kita laughed and shook her hand.
"Uh, Sato Kita, reincarnation of some chick named Ayame. Fifteen years old, current residence...here," she replied and grinned. Zanna laughed.
"Ha, you are so much like Ayame. I can tell this is the beginning of a strange and pretty friggen awesome friendship." Kita laughed and nodded. Kurama sweatdropped and laughed. At least they were getting along.
"Well, now that we're all here, let's get started," Kurama began.
"Wait, Zanna, you're training with me?" Kita asked. Zanna nodded. "Why?"
"Zanna was in an 'accident' awhile ago. She was severely hurt, she's lucky she survived. But all her power and strength were gone. She's managed to gain some of it back, but she's not even close to where she left off at. She's pretty close to your level right now, Kita, so she'll be training with us. She also knew Ayame when she was alive, so maybe she can help bring her out," Kurama explained.
"Oh, cool," Kita said and grinned at Zanna. She was happy she didn't have to be put through this hell alone anymore.
Not to mention, training went by much faster with her there. Throughout the day, Zanna kept doing things to make Kita laugh. Once, when Hiei wasn't looking, she somehow managed to steal his katana and replace it with a stick. She then provoked him, saying something about third eyes aren't really in fashion anymore, and he went to draw his katana. When he drew the stick instead, he knew he was no match for Zanna's katana, and he had to retreat to a tree, screaming and cursing at her the whole time, telling her she better give him his katana back if she wanted to live to see dinner. She eventually did, but her and Kita laughed about it for hours. Even Kurama couldn't help but laugh at the poor hanyou.
Eventually, Hiei decided that he wasn’t going to put up with them anymore. Well, actually, it was just Zanna that was driving him crazy. So he left, leaving Kurama to finish out their training. That day was also just strength training, and by the end, they felt dead again. But this time, Kita didn’t pass out.
“Alright, that’s good for today. We’ll continue in a few days, and we’ll take a break tomorrow,” Kurama told them. They deserved a break, even though it was only the first day for Zanna. They had worked really hard. Besides, Kurama had something else to do.
“Woohoo! It’s only my first day and I’m already getting a day off. Man, I rock,” Zanna said and flopped down on the ground. Kita laughed and did the same. They lay on the ground for a few minutes before Kita decided to go inside and take a shower, leaving Zanna all to herself out there.
‘It’s so strange,’ she thought to herself. ‘She’s so much like Ayame. And yet, she doesn’t remember anything from Makai, her family, or me.’
“That’s because she hasn’t been able to bring Ayame out yet,” a voice from behind her said. There was only one person she knew that could read her mind, and that was Hiei. “Koenma says that once she’s able to do that, she should be able to remember everything. Including how to beat the Ronins.” Zanna sat up.
“You mean, you’re training her to do all this, and you don’t even know how to beat them?!??! She’ll be killed! I won’t let you do that to her!”
“Calm down, Zanna,” Hiei told her. “Of course we don’t know. How could we? But Ayame did know. So if we can find a way for her to overpower Kita, then we can find out and stop them once and for all. And I wouldn’t go mentioning anything to her about you two being half sisters yet. After all, it’s partially your fault she got killed in the first place…”
“Shut up!” Zanna snapped at him. “You know it was an accident!” She was starting to get tears in her eyes. “Stop.” Hiei sighed. He knew that was a horrible thing to do to her.
“Hn, sorry,” he replied and sat down next to her. She looked at him and nodded. She felt horrible for what she had done, and that was why she had to help her now. She sighed, and laid her head on Hiei’s shoulder. Even though they fought constantly and she loved to torture him, he was still one of the few people she could count on.
She played with her dog tag in her fingers and looked up. Everything would be alright. Somehow. Right?
~*~*~*~
Three weeks passed, and everyday, the training was the same. Eventually, Kita and Zanna’s bodies began to get used to the pain. Neither of them dreaded training anymore. Especially Kita. She had really started to develop a thing for the kitsune. They had been flirting almost constantly, even though both were too shy to admit it. They knew that they needed to keep their relationship strictly professional, considering her life was in his hands. That turned out to be much harder than they had hoped.
Kita lay awake in her bed at Genkai’s. She could hear Zanna breathing heavily across the room. They were rooming together, which Kita didn’t mind. She liked Zanna, she was cool. She knew she would definitely make her life more interesting.
For some reason, Kita just couldn’t fall asleep. She was exhausted. But for some reason, she was awake. Thinking.
It was still kinda hard to believe that she was a demon. Her, of all people. What made her so special?
And why did people keep saying that she needed to bring Ayame out in some way? How was she supposed to do that? Still, no one had told her. And once she did, would that mean she wouldn’t exist anymore? No, it couldn’t mean that…could it?
Kita heard a tap on the window. Assuming it was just a rock or something, she ignored it and tried to get to sleep. But then she heard it again, and again. Annoyed, she got up and opened the drapes. She gasped because she hadn’t expected to see a pair of emerald eyes looking back at her.
After a few seconds, she opened the window.
“Jesus Christ, Kurama, you scared the living crap out me,” she whispered loudly. Kurama mouthed the word ‘sorry’ and smiled. Kita did, too. He motioned for her to come outside. She grabbed the jacket hung over her chair and climbed out the window easily, shutting it behind her.
“What’s up?” she asked as she put her jacket on. It was colder than she thought, and all she had on was a pair of shorts and a tank top. Her hair was in a messy ponytail and she had very little makeup on. Yea. She must look real attractive right now.
“I needed to talk to you…again,” he told her.
“Then why didn’t you just use the door like normal people?” she asked, jokingly.
“I didn’t want to wake Zanna,” he replied. Kita nodded and smiled. “Follow me.” He led her through the trees and down to a beach. It was fairly big. Kita didn’t even know Genkai had a beach. That made her even happier about staying there. She could hear the waves crashing into the shore. It was dark, but the full moon made the water light up. It was beautiful, and she wondered why Kurama had picked here to talk to her. Frankly, she didn’t care. She loved it, and knew she would be back here often.
Kurama sat down in the sand relatively close to the water. He had one leg stretched out and the other bent, with his elbow on his knee. Kita went and sat next to him. She had no idea what he wanted to talk to her about. Maybe he was finally going to explain everything about Ayame and what exactly she needed to do in order to get this Kano guy off her back. But Kurama didn’t look like he was going to say anything. He was just staring up at the moon. She couldn’t help but noticed how good he looked. She really was falling for him, and she knew it. She also knew there was no way she could do anything about it. But…it couldn’t help to look…
Just as she thought this, he turned his head. Before she knew it, his lips had met hers. She couldn’t believe it. Was she dreaming? No, her dreams never felt this good. Her eyes were wide with shock at first. But then, as she realized that she wasn’t dreaming and that she really was this lucky, she relaxed and the kiss deepened.
Kurama couldn’t believe he had actually done it. It had taken a lot of prompting from Youko, but finally he realized that it was going to be impossible to keep their relationship simply instructor and student. He knew it was wrong, but it just felt so…right. Eventually, he pulled away.
“I’ve been waiting to do that,” he said softly and smiled.
“What took you so long?” Kita responded with a playful smirk and kissed him again. She still couldn’t believe this was happening, but she was loving every minute of it. That is, until she heard a chuckle from behind them. They broke the kiss and turned around, only to find a very unwelcome hanyou staring at them and smirking.
“Couldn’t control yourself, kitsune?” Hiei asked sarcastically, laughing at them.
“Get out of here, Hiei,” Kurama said angrily. Kita blushed and hugged her knees to her chest. She didn’t know they had an audience. Hiei smirked again, and shrugged.
“Whatever you say, Romeo,” he said and flitted away. Kurama glared at him until he was out of sight and then laughed kinda half-heartedly.
“Sorry about that…I didn’t know…,” he explained. Kita smiled and giggled a bit.
“It’s ok.” They sat there for a few moments and watched the waves come in. He lay down and she laid her head on his chest. They fell asleep and stayed that way until the sun rose and the waves crashed onto them. They woke up coughing and spitting the water out, then laughing hysterically.
“Well, we should probably get back to the temple, before everyone finds out we’re gone…if they haven’t already,” Kurama suggested, standing. He reached out his hand to pull her up. He swung an arm around her shoulder as they walked back. Kita smiled. If this wasn’t what Kurama had planned, she would’ve killed him for dragging her out of bed in the middle of the night.
