Swarm
She laid there, in the fading light, and they flocked to her. In a winding spiral, they died as they descended upon her. There were so many that he could not see her soft face; only the beautiful red butterflies that haunted her still form. But if her person had been in view, he was sure she would have been smiling. She would be happy that he had done something good for once, right? He had been correct, to do what he had done, no question. It was not a wondrous sight, not beyond comprehension; he did not break into tears, it was just a bit of weight off his shoulders. Not something huge missing, or someone he needed back. She was just Yukina, and this was his choice.Hiei felt that he had always burdened his sister with his presence. He had wandered between the lines of sanity much too long. He never had it in his mind to tell her the truth about his past. Her eyes, the way they would stare at him with trust, compassion, and hope, was what had held him. When he rid himself of her, he had felt the need to stab out her eyes until red pooled in her sockets and drained down her face. He had felt the need to mutilate her innocent face beyond recognition...and so, he did. Yukina would cry no more jewels for him.
She had caused him guilt, regret, and remorse. She had caused him to be shoved into something that he had never wanted, and still didn't. She had caused him to look back at all that he had done, and he could no longer laugh as he had before. Nor could he smile insanely and keep walking, spilling blood as if it were nothing. She had made him regret his demonic nature because of her innocence. What was so appealing about her, anyway?
When he struck her down, he felt compassion. He was compelled to stab out her heart, so she that could never feel anything again. She would have pain, and only someone that could feel nothing else would treasure a pain such as this. He craved to shred her heart to pieces under his bloodthirsty gaze. So, he grabbed her heart, and tore it from her.
It wasn't special, and it didn't look purer than any other demon or human filth. It was just a normal, bloody organ. Everyone was wrong about her: she was the same. There was no difference, she was no kinder. Yet this realization made him yearn for her blood even more.
He wanted to laugh at Yukina in her present state. She had always talked about fairness, good, love, and trust, but most of all she had talked about her brother. Here he was, standing over her with a grin. She would utter no more words, no more pretty lies.
He felt cured of a sickness that he had been carrying for a long time. His burden had been to much, so he had done the right thing, the only thing: he had let it go. It wasn't his problem anymore; it was gone. Just like his mother's people had realized, he was a disease that had to be cured. They say that children take after their predecessors, by slaying Yukina he had followed in their footsteps. He wondered for a moment if they would be proud of what he had done. Would Yukina be proud? Would she be happy with his decision? He hoped so.
After all, he couldn’t break his old promises. He had never made any to Yukina, so what did he owe her? She knew nothing of what he was, and she never would. After all, how long can you keep something together after it’s broken?
He glanced down at her still form, light flickering over the butterflies that had gathered around her. They seemed attracted to the scene before them, obsessed in a way. Like their moth cousins, they seemed drawn to the wake of his dark flame. Who could blame them? “Innocent” blood was captivating. Hiei smiled ‘lovingly’ at his sister, his smile more of a smirk. He began to turn, and walk away. For a moment, the sun caught him, in her harsh gaze. His head turned slightly back, and his eyes surveyed the afterglow of day. He grinned again, and laughed quietly. Then his eyes turned to follow the butterflies. They spread themselves around her.
They swarmed.
Authors Note/Explanation: The butterflies were actually Yukina’s blood, if none of you got that. I added Hiei laughing at the end as an after thought of something I had written earlier. About Hiei looking back on his past and not being able to laugh. So, as sort of a ‘fuck you’, I had him turn around and laugh. My sister was the willing editor of this lovely fanfiction.
