Chapter 7: Information Passed: The Transfer Stage
*************************************************************** *********
"I HAVE GOT NEWS ON THE PRINCESS!!!" Koenma yelled at the spirit detectives.
"What is it Koenma?" Botan asked.
"Yeah, what's the news?" Yusuke cocked his head to the side.
"The princess is… the princess…" Koenma calmed down a little.
"Oh! Koenma! Did you find out who she is?" Kurama asked.
Wait… wouldn't Koenma sound a bit more happy if he found the princess? He sounds like he has urgent news… Hm, I guess we just have to wait to find out what he has to say… Kurama thought.
"YEAH!!! NOW I GET TO MEET THE PRINCESS!!!" Kuwabara exclaimed.
Hiei just silently stood next to Kurama listening…
Hn, maybe the fool has a point, maybe Koenma did find the princess, but I doubt that, the way how this mission is going, it seems to only get worse, although… Hiei was in deep thought.
"Kuwabara SHUT UP!!!" Yusuke kicked Kuwabara because he was singing, "I get to meet the princess," over and over again non-stop.
"Make me!" Kuwabara had made a big mistake in saying those words. The carrot-toped oaf had received a double dose of death glares from Yusuke and Hiei. Kuwabara closed his mouth, not uttering another word.
"Are you going to tell us your news or not Koenma?" Hiei snapped at Koenma. Clearly, Hiei was getting irritated because the only thin Koenma was able to say was `the princess…'
Koenma took a deep breath.
"The princess, being a spirit demon, she's in the stage of her life when she is most vulnerable… she is in the `transfer stage'…" Koenma breathed in.
The five just stood there looking at Koenma, not knowing what to say, because none of them knew what `the transfer stage' was.
"Ok, what is a transfer stage?" Yusuke asked.
"Yes Koenma, what is this transfer stage?" Hiei raise an eyebrow.
"The transfer stage of a spirit demons life is when they're being tested… They are going through the test of the soul… this is when spirit demons give up all of their strength to be able to live, most of the times, the spirit demons end up giving away too much energy and strength, if this happens, their fate is sealed. They would get sick and die. Very few spirit demons have survived these trials of the soul…that is one reason why spirit demons are so powerful and rare, because once they go through these tests; the power of the soul is at the disposal of these demons.
The power of the soul is usually called the power of yin yang… ice, fire, lightness, and darkness… as you remember, the eye color of this demon changes to the souls attack. When the ice attack is being summoned, the eye color is blue, fire attacks, red eyes, and for light and dark attacks, the eyes turn green.
If one is attacked in anyway while they are at this stage of their life, then they will die for sure… if attacked, they can only delay their death for a little while, nothing else… that is why it is essential to find the princess as soon as possible! This is the information I was able to gather so far… so you have no choice but find her as soon as you can, so step up your pace and find that spirit fire demon!" Koenma explained as quickly as possible.
"Oh, so if anything happens to the princess while she is in the `transfer stage', even the smallest paper cut or bruise, that could kill them in that stage of their life?" Kurama asked.
"Precisely, and if a demon with the power of absorbing souls came along, and take the soul of the spirit demon in the transfer stage, then the spirit demon would be dead, body and soul, and the demon that absorbed the soul would have that power… the power of yin yang, and then they would become all powerful…" Koenma looked at each of the spirit detectives.
"Koenma, what will happen, if the spirit demon dies before we get to her?" Botan asked.
"I don't know, and let's hope we never find out," Koenma sighed, "I will go back to the Reikai to search for more information on spirit demons, and I expect you to be looking for the princess at all times! You MUST locate her, and bring the princess to me as soon as possible, which is before another demon finds her before us! You are on the clock! Every second counts! FIND HER!!!" those were Koenma's last words before he left for the Reikai.
"Great, so now we have a time limit, this is just great," Yusuke muttered to himself.
If he wants to find this princess this bad, why doesn't Koenma just help us also, and speed up this idiotic mission… no, what am I thinking, Koenma is probably the laziest cretin I have ever met… Hiei sighed at the thought.
A couple hours have past since Hiei, Kurama, Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Botan spoke to Koenma. They had already left the school and were at a fast food restaurant, thinking how they would find a princess, which they don't know how she looked like, or what her name is, so how were they going to find her? And now there was a time limit set, find her before another demon does.
"Hey you guys, an idea just popped into my mind!" Kuwabara smacked the tabled with his two hands.
"Wow Kuwabara, maybe this school really IS making you smarter," Yusuke sarcastically rolled his eyes.
"What if Zan is the spirit demon? I mean, she did just allow herself to be pushed around for a long time, and she did look like she was drowned of energy and strength," Kuwabara ignored Yusuke's comment.
"That's impossible Kuwabara. One, if she were a spirit demon under this stage, she wouldn't let anybody punch her, maybe even touch her in any way, because even the slightest paper cut or bruise could seal her fate in death. Two, why would a fire spirit demon princess be at a school or out in the open during the transfer stage? Anybody would be able to attack her, and if she did do that, she would really stupid. Zan doesn't seem to be the kind of girl that is an idiot, and I think if she were a spirit demon, she wouldn't be out in the open. Even if she were only in the beginning to come into this stage of her life, she would take precautions. Besides, she seems very healthy, so it is practically impossible that she is the one we are looking for, and maybe she seems drained of energy and strength because she may be very stressed, after all, she did have to deal with those cheerleaders for a long time… so no, Zan couldn't be the princess." Kurama sipped his Coca Cola while he watched Kuwabara shrink away into a corner, where he remained silent.
"But still, I wonder who it is," Yusuke sighed at the thought.
"Why do we even have to find this stupid princess? It's not like it matter if a couple of races of demons die… there are already plenty or different kinds of demons; why can't Koenma let this girl die?" Hiei blurted out.
"Would you really want a race of demons to become extinct?" Kurama asked.
"I could care less." Hiei looked away.
"Hiei! I can't believe what you are saying! Do you really want to keep Karazan as the king of the fire continent?" Botan looked at Hiei.
"Hn, do you really think that the words you are saying to me will make me care? Since when have I ever been worried about the fire continent's politics? Don't push it. I have already been dragged into this case, so don't say anything else. Your lucky that I am not out to kill the princess myself." Hiei glared at Botan and then turned his face back towards the window.
"Hiei! You wouldn't dare lay a finger on our princess!" Botan raised her voice.
"I don't care anymore. I won't kill her if I find her…" Hiei glared at Botan.
Botan didn't say anything else and resumed eating the rest of her French fries. Everybody remained silent for a couple of minutes.
"So, you are going to help us, and you won't kill her Hiei?" Yusuke asked.
"I don't exactly have a choice now do I," Hiei stated.
***
Zan walked home in silence, recalling some of the things that happened at school, and thinking about it.
Well, at least I got my revenge on Yume and Milkshake… Zan sighed. She thought about the punishment she was going to receive when Mr. Kitamura found out about what she did to Yume.
Zan was pacing down the sidewalk looking at all of the plants that resided next to that metal fence, which was about 10 feet tall. This fence was guarding hundreds of graves.
Zan looked through the fence. Each gravestone had the name of the resting body underneath it engraved in it's white stone, along with a message on it from their loved ones, the date of birth, and the date of death. This graveyard was more like a garden, because there was at least one plant nearby each grave.
The founder of this cemetery was Kyou E. Yamagata. He was a kind man, and a lover of plants. 85 years ago, he married a beautiful young lady named Reggie Watson. She was an American girl from the Hawaiian Islands. They were married for ten years, but then a tragedy happened. Reggie had died from cancer. Kyou only wanted the best for his love so instead of burring her in a regular cemetery, he started up his own. Reggie's favorite flowers were lilacs, so when her buried her in his new cemetery, he planted lilacs all around her grave, the gravestone was made out of white marble. This was the first grave in this cemetery ever. 17 years after Reggie's death, Kyou died himself, and now, his only son, Koryu Yamagata. Kyou was buried next to his wife, his grave also surrounded by lilacs, with a matching marble white gravestone. Ever since, more and more graves appeared in this cemetery that was ran by Koryu. Just one year ago, Koryu had died also from a car crash, along with his wife and two children, and them too, they were buried next to his mother and father, their graves also covered in lilacs. Such a beautiful thing… how could it be this beautiful, this peaceful, and yet, so depressing, that even if you didn't even know these six people, you would still cry, because you would see a set of six graves, one family, and lilacs symbolizing how much they all loved each other. These three graves are in the very center of the cemetery, next to a small pond, and a weeping willow tree next to the graves, shadowing it with it's gorgeous leaves, and this tree also was surrounded by lilacs. It would probably the most beautiful thing you would ever see… and it would also be a very somber place that would make anyone cry.
Now this cemetery looked more like a gorgeous park, filled with trees, and flowers, everything was green and colorful. This grave was located near the ocean, so now and then; one could feel the salty breeze.
"It's hard to believe that such a beautiful place is a place of mourning for 75 years." Zan thought out loud. Now and days, the cemetery was ran by the government, and made the cemetery look even more beautiful.
I think I should go for a visit… Zan thought.
Zan walked to the front gates. She opened the metallic doors and went through. She then stepped onto the white pavement and walked around each grave. As Zan walked to her destination, she regarded each of the graves.
They all look so beautiful and peaceful… and yet it is so depressing… Zan felt the salty ocean breeze rush past her.
She kept on walking down the same path, and then turned to her right. She walked another five minutes down the same path and then took another right to a grave that was also next to a pond. It had a huge sakura tree next to it; with its branches and leaves and sakura blossoms hovering over the grave, some braches were low to the ground, forming a some-what barrier or sakura around the grave. Fallen sakura flowers surrounded the graves. To the right and left of the gravestone there was a white rose bush covered in full-bloomed roses. In front and all around the gravestone, tightly packed together, were small white flowers that were planted three feet all around the grave stone, forming a circle. The gravestone itself was also a marble stone, but it had a slight pink color in it. In front of the sakura tree, resided a pinkish-gray bench. All together it was a beautiful sight of light pink and white flowers.
Even though I don't like pink a lot, I can't help but think that it is so gorgeous… this is the only place that I like the color pink… pink and white look good here together, it's so… so… funny, I think it looks so good I can't think of anything else to say… how funny, cause it was just like Her, She could always say things that would may you speechless… just like when She announced to me that She was going to die… Zan stepped off the pavement and walk right in front of the grave.
"Long time no see…" Zan spoke out loud to the grave, "It fits you perfectly. This grave is gorgeous, just like you. It takes your breath away, and you don't know what to say, just like you. When you told me it was your time to go, I didn't know you meant that you would die," Tears started to stream down Zan's face as she knelt down in front of the grave.
"You just had to go and leave… it's not fair! You were the only one that ever understood me completely, and now your gone… I still cry for you, even though you have been gone such a long time… So here I am visiting you… Because you still linger around in my thoughts," Zan's tears stung her eyes, as each one dripped down her face.
I'm so tired of being here,
Suppressed by all my childish fears,
And if you have to leave,
I wish that you would just leave,
'Cause your presence still lingers here,
And it won't leave me alone,
"You just had to leave! I still can't except that you are dead… Why did you leave me alone… did you not think I wouldn't be hurt?" Zan pounded the ground with her fist once, tears still streamed down her face, each one screaming out to the grave, `why did you have to leave!'
These wounds won't seem to heal,
This pain is just too real,
There's just too much that time cannot erase,
"When I saw you dying, all you did was smile at me, and you told me how good I am, and said that I have a strong soul… you just watched me weep and all you said was, `don't worry, everything will be alright…' and you just smiled… and I cried next to you, clinging to your arm, and you told me not to cry… you wiped away one of my tears as I looked up at you…" Zan wept even more... the pain and agony of her heart burning within her, causing each tear that escaped her blood-shot eyes to give her even more hurt, engulfing her in the dark shadows of depression, Zan's soul, all twisted up in her own feelings, not knowing whether she was crying tears of anger… angry at Her for passing away, leaving Zan all alone, or that was it sadness… not even Zan could understand, what… what she was crying for…
When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears,
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears,
I held your hand through all of these years,
But you still have,
All of me,
"You just laid there, looking at me, and then asked me, so calmly… first you asked me to smile, and then you asked me to do you a favor… you asked me a death wish… and I hear that wish echoing through my brain every night, I see your face fading in the distance of my mind, and you disappear into the light, leaving me in the darkness behind, in every dream… were you always this certain that you going to die? Why didn't you at least try to hold on to your life? Didn't you care about what was going to happen to me?" Zan sunk her teeth into her lip, warm crimson drops of bitter blood oozed into her mouth, slightly tinting her teeth pink… she didn't know why she broke down now, she only intended to go and send a hello through the grave to the other world… to the one that she had lost, but now, Zan was crying her heart out to a grave, expressing all of her concealed secrets to the grave…
You used to captivate me,
By your resonating light,
Now I'm bound by the life you left behind,
Your face it haunts,
My once pleasant dreams,
Your voice it chased away,
All the sanity in me,
Zan threw herself onto the ground, as she sobbed into the little white flowers, she repeated the same words… "Why? Why out of all people did you have to be the one that is now gone? Why?" saying it over and over again…
These wounds won't seem to heal,
This pain is just too real,
There's just too much that time cannot erase,
Zan sat back up, her eyes were remained red from all of the tears that were still streaming down her face, then she again spoke to the grave, "I know we haven't always agreed at things, and there were some things that I didn't find perfect about you… But that didn't mean that I didn't like you, you were like a sister to me, and now your gone… This grave is a perfect example, the sakura tree has pink blossoms, and I don't like the color pink, but it makes this grave look so beautiful, you can't help but think it looks gorgeous, takes a lot of words out of your mouth… Like you… Like when you just told me it was you time to go… You looked peaceful and calm, but those words sounded so hideous at the time, you basically just told me good-bye for life…" Zan looked at all of the flowers that seemed to be listening to every word Zan had been saying. The words `don't worry, everything will be alright, echoed through Zan's mind, repeating itself over and over again, causing Zan to have even more pain in her heart, and more emotions to continue to torment her body and soul …
When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears,
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears,
I held your hand through all of these years,
But you still have,
All of me,
Zan, only to fail once more, attempted to fight back all of her hurtful tears, as she remembered every word that She said as Zan watched Her die… Don't worry Zan everything will be all right… C'mon, smile! Everything will be all right… Please, fulfill my death wish…And don't worry, it was already set, it is my time to go, now wipe away those tears and smile, you have such a kind heart and a strong soul… even though it may take one a while too see that… it is true, never give up on your hopes and dreams… Zan, thank you for everything… Remember, even if I'm gone… I will still be here with you, in your memories and in your heart…Farewell Zan, Farwell… Those were Her last words…
"Farewell… that's what you told me, you told me basically farewell forever… You told me everything will be all right… and, you told me that you will always be with me in my heart and memories… but that's not enough. After you said farewell to me, I broke down… because farewell was your last word to me, farewell forever… you died with a smile on your face… how could you! How could you have been so peaceful and calm watching me sob on your arm, crying about your death… you were dead… you were dead with a smile, and looking pure…" Zan sobbed even harder, remembering Her last moment, the last breath of life She would ever breath, and those horrifying last words, drenched in bitterness and sorrow, with a hint of happiness… happiness huh? Where did that come from? Zan's eyes felt sharp pains now as each tear rolled down her face… an echo of the words, Farwell Zan, farewell, played in the distance of her mind…
I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone,
But though you're still with me,
I've been alone all along,
"You just had to go away, and say those words farewell…" Zan dried her eyes, and felt the wound on her lips heal, but they were only to be filled with tears and sharp pains in her eyes again, "I was the only one at you burial, because… you didn't want a lot of people to come… and you wrote down for me on a piece of paper that you wanted to be buried in a grave that looks like this… I don't know why I came here… you were dead for about 3 months now… and yet still, I still weep when I hear your name, or look at a picture… still…" Zan finally stopped sobbing. Her eyes couldn't take any more pain. Zan rested her head gently on the tiny white flowers that grew around the grave. These little flowers seemed to give Zan some comfort. A light breeze flew by, softly brushing itself past Zan's body. Zan cleared her mind, and listened to her surroundings for a brief moment, only for one swift moment. And at that second, it seemed, that the little white flowers whispered into Zan's ear, remember the good times too… Zan lifted her head off the white plants, brushing some hair out of her emerald eyes. She thought back but then… were there any happy memories? She searched the depths of her mind and soul, and reached out to that small hopeful light that guided her through her memories. As if in a dark maze, it shined a path of light to the exit, bringing back some memories. A flash of light burned Zan's eyes as she saw a girl about her own age, acting nervous around a pair of two cute looking boys, and then running behind Zan, whispering something in Zan's ear. The flash of light stopped burning in her eyes. Zan thought about the image that she just saw and realized that it was a memory, a memory that was… comforting! Zan laughed a little, remembering how She always made a fool of Herself in front of boys, and then asking for Zan to cover for Her because She did something stupid, Zan finally got a small smile on her face, her eyes, still stinging from the pain that the tears had caused her.
When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears,
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears,
I held your hand through all of these years,
But you still have,
All of me.
Zan stood up from the grave, a small smile turning into a quite giggle. It just clicked in her mind. Zan finally understood why She was asked to keep on smiling, so She could die peacefully… at the site of Zan being happy…
Zan smiled at the grave. "I understand now…" Zan smiled at the grave, her eyes cooling down from all of the swelling, and her blood-shot eyes, slowly falling back into their regular white color. The wound on her lip had pretty much healed, but a hint of pain still lingered around in her mouth. Zan turned around and started to take her leave, to get farther away from the one place that could ever cause Zan to fall apart like she just did. As Zan walked slowly farther and farther away from the grave, Zan turned around. A single, lonesome tear escaped her eyes once more.
"Don't worry, I swear, I will never give up… And I will fulfill your wish that you couldn't complete… I will keep smiling and look ahead of me, and not let the past get to me…" Zan bid good-bye to the grave and started to run out of the cemetery.
I can't believe I broke down and stopped crying so fast… hm, I probably sounded really stupid… it only took me about 3 months and one big huge cry to figure out that the reason She asked me to smile was because She wanted me to be happy… I can be so stupid! Wow, I spent an entire hour there crying… no wonder my eyes hurt like hell… I finally understand… and now that I do, I want to fulfill her wish even more… and, mine as well… Like she said, never give up… Zan silently thought to herself, as she ran out of the cemetery as fast as she could.
Zan finally reached the gates out of the cemetery and burst through them. She finally escaped the grasp of sorrow that had caused her to remember a painful memory of the heart, she would do anything at this instant to get as far as possible away from that grave, even through she knew that She only wished well of her… Zan still couldn't bear to remember any more killer memories.
Zan again now resumed heading home. She paced along the sidewalk, and finally reached her house. It was a big two-story house. It was facing towards a sidewalk, which had a couple of trees and a grassy hill behind it. Behind that hill, was the sandy beach.
Zan sighed as she stepped into her home. She was the only person in her house.
"I'm home," Zan called out to apparently no one.
Good old home, I'm living alone again… I finished all of my homework… so now what? I still have a few hours left before I have to go to work… Zan sighed.
Because Zan had been living alone for quite a while, it was essential for her to work, or else, she wouldn't have any money to pay for her food, house, bills, and personal things.
Zan lay down on her couch and after about five minutes of staring at the ceiling, Zan drifted of into a dreamless slumber.
***
Hiei was now sitting on top of a broken down warehouse, thinking about everything that happen that day, and wondered how long this mission would last. Kurama too was thinking about what happened that day, but he was at his mothers home, reading a book about plants. Botan had flown up to spirit world to try and find any records on a fire spirit demon princess. Kuwabara was at the arcade, obviously playing games, and Yusuke had gone to the back of the school field, and had a long time ago, beat up Dice, who had already ran away from Yusuke. Now Yusuke was sitting in the middle of the field, thinking about what kinds of demons he will have to fight later on in his life.
Hours later, Zan had woken up. It was 5:00, and she stood up from her couch.
I better get ready to go to work, and with that she raced upstairs to her room to change.
