The Betrayal
- Chapter 8 -

Kurama knew that Hiei was just barely holding himself together. To be honest, he wasn't happy either, but understood the concern that came with a family through Shiori. This didn't mean he appreciated that at this point in time. His biggest concern was hopefully getting Keiko back where she belonged without bloodshed. Hiei, however, was both pissed and lost. The fire demon wasn't sure what to do with himself without his newly found anchor to reality. Then he felt a pulse from his dragon. It didn't feel like it was going to break loose from the wards, but more like it was trying to pull him in a direction.

~Did you feel that, Fox?~

~Yes, I did. I do believe that is our flower's mating mark.~
Kurama replied, pulling Hiei after him. "Mother, can you please go back to my apartment? We shall retrieve Keiko and meet you there."

Before Shiori could say anything, she was alone in the room.

The pair flitted from rooftop to rooftop, streaks of black and red, as they raced in the direction that the elderly Yukimura's car had taken, aided by the pull of Keiko's mating mark.

Kurama sensed Hiei's thoughts and realized his intentions upon catching up with the vehicle. ~Hiei, we cannot kill Keiko's grandparents... no matter how tempting the prospect may be at the moment.~

Hiei grunted and while he didn't like it, he didn't want to traumatize their mate either. ~Hn, agreed. Terrorize?~

~Naturally.~
replied the Fox with a smirk.

Hiei grinned grimly. He was looking forward to this as he had very little else since Yukina had been kidnapped and he'd had the pleasure of dispatching Tarukane. Once more a family member had been taken from him and then, as now, it had been Kurama who had covered his back and made sure that he didn't do too much damage. He was not used to relying on anyone, but somehow this Fox had wormed his way into being both trusted and loved.

As they trailed their prey, Hiei made sure to remain slow enough as to not outrun the car but also to keep following the pull. He began to plot what he could do to Keiko's grandparents without upsetting their mate too badly in the back of his mind.

He imagined dismemberment was out, but perhaps maiming would not be too extreme? An audible snort from Kurama was heard as the kitsune caught the stray thought and zipped slightly ahead quickly dispelled Hiei's thought. 'Damn.'

Kuwabara finally had succeeded in cornering both Yusuke and Botan. "All right, Urameshi, what did you do to Keiko?"

Yusuke looked startled for a second before he composed himself, a scowling settling across his face as he took on a defensive pose. "Don't start, Kuwabara. It's none of your business."

"Don't give me that crap, Urameshi. It's my business when it's breaking up the team." Kuwabara turned away for a moment. "You know, we've all had our differences, but something major must have happened between you and Keiko. I mean, I came across both Hiei and Kurama with her earlier and they made it abundantly clear that they were both with her. Add onto that the fact that they all seemed pretty pissed at you leads me to one thing." He looked up for a moment as if gathering his thoughts and noticed something, "Hey, isn't that Hiei and Kurama? I've never seen them moving so slow before."

Yusuke looked up where Kuwabara was pointing, "Shit, you're right." He opened his energy slightly, allowing him to sense the their youki. "And Hiei feels madder than when he confronted us, Botan."

Botan winced, "Oh. Well, maybe we'd better follow them, just in case." A thought suddenly occured to the ferry girl and a worried look passed over her face. "Do you think something could have happened to Keiko?"

"I hope not. Otherwise we'll have a couple of homicidal youkai on our hands." Yusuke took off, following the trail that Kurama and Hiei were leaving.

"Hey, Urameshi, wait for me!" Kuwabara added, taking off after Yusuke.

The sedative that the orderly had given Keiko was just beginning to wear off as the little blue sedan pulled into the Yukimura's driveway. She could hear the voices of her grandparent's in the front seat as they conversed quietly.

"Well, I for one will not allow our granddaughter to cavort with those people. Did you see that one with the red hair? Have you ever! His mother should be ashamed, allowing him to grow it so long." Megumi tutted indignantly.

Hiroshi was quick to agree: "Yes, dear. I'm sure once Keiko is through greiving, she will come to her senses. Those two looked like trouble if you ask me. Probably associated with that Urameshi boy."

"Gracious, I have no idea what her parents were thinking, allowing her to associate with that hooligan! It's a good thing she has us to put a stop to that."

'No... please...' Though the medication was clearing slightly, Keiko remained groggy. She tried to voice her protest at the plans her grandparents had for her, but all she could manage was a small whimper. She felt the comforting warmth of Hiei's cloak in her hands and clutched it tighly. Somehow, she had to get away.

Megumi heard the whimper and looked back to see her precious granddaughter still clutching that cloak. She reached back and laid her hand on Keiko's arm, "Don't worry, dear, we're home and in just a few minutes you can be safe in bed." She noticed something odd just then, "What's this bandage on your hand and arm, sweetie?"

Keiko registered her grandmother's touch and realized that if the ward were removed, the dragon could be deadly. This knowledge allowed her to shake off the drug induced haze in order to break loose of her grandmother's grasp. The only thought reverberating in her mind was that she had to get away. She frantically fumbled for the door handle, finally registering that the car was not moving and fortunately her grandfather had not engaged the child safety locks. She flew out of the car, stumbling slightly as she tried to get her bearings. She still wasn't terribly steady on her feet, but she knew that she had to get out of there.

Suddenly, a red and black blur came to rest not even 5 feet from the car. Keiko cried out when she saw Hiei and Kurama, and sobbing, flew over to Hiei who caught her in his arms and clutched her close to him. Kurama moved over to them, practically moulding himself to her back. Between the two, all that could be seen of Keiko was a shuddering head as she continued to cry. Hiei's glance was smouldering, promising pain beyond imagining while Kurama's promised a very slow, painful retribution that the elderly couple couldn't quite grasp the extent of.

Hiei's voice came very low, "You had no right."

Just then Yusuke, Kuwabara and Botan ran up the driveway, all three out of breath.

Hiroshi got out of the car in time to hear Hiei's comment. "We had every right, young man! We are her family! All that we have left of our son!"

Megumi got out at this point and shook her fist, "What are you doing here, anyway! We can have you arrested for trespassing, you know!"

Yusuke was completely confused, "All right, what's going on and use simple words so that I understand!" Botan noticed Keiko's condition and became worried. "What's wrong with Keiko?" She asked, drawing Yusuke's attention to his ex-girlfriend. The sight caused him to become even more perturbed. "All right, who did what to Keiko?"

"That's just the answer that I'm looking for, you ruffian!" Megumi retorted. "She has a mysterious bandage on her arm and when I tried to examine it, the poor dear went wild!"

Kurama was doing two things from his position. One - he was comforting Keiko and two - he was preventing Hiei from doing bodily damage to the last remaining members of Keiko's birth family. "Yusuke, Keiko's parents were killed this morning in a car crash. When we went down to the hospital, these two arrived. They are apparently Keiko's grandparents and they have kidnapped her from her rightful mates."

When Yusuke heard this his eyes narrowed as he grew furious on Keiko's behalf. Being fairly newly mated himself, he could sympathize with their plight, and yet Koenma would have him side with the humans. He shook his head over the mess.

"Oh, dear." Botan shook her own head, knowing of Yusuke's plight.

"Man, that sucks." Kuwabara said. He made his way over to the trio, and gently laid his hand on Keiko's shoulder the best he could. "I'm sorry for your loss, Keiko. If you guys need anything, call me." He turned to Keiko's grandparents and scowled, "And as for you, if you knew half of what we've all been through together, you'd leave Keiko alone. She needs Hiei and Kurama right now. Leave her with them and... just visit or something!"

Very softly, so softly that it was only heard by her two mates and Kuwabara, Keiko replied, "Thanks, Kuwabara."

"Young man!" Megumi replied indignantly, "Keiko is still officially a minor and until that changes, she should, and will be staying with her family! That abomination she is part of smacks a little too much of - of -"

"You cannot think of it, can you?" Kurama replied, his voice ice cold. "Two beings such as we could never love, much less two men loving the wonderful woman your granddaughter is!"

"It's an abomination, is what it is!" The older woman continued in the same vein. "This needs to be undone, and undone now!"

Keiko had finally had enough. Her voice suddenly pierced through the condemnation with a screech, "STOP IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JUST EVERYONE STOP!" Her sob was almost as loud as her scream. "Please."

She left off with a whimper. She curled deeper into Hiei's arms, pulling Kurama's arms with her. "Take me home? Please? Hiei, Kurama?"

"Hn." Hiei replied with a nod.

"As you wish, my flower." Kurama replied. The three of them blurred out, impossible to see if they had kept that configuration or if one was carrying Keiko.

Yusuke shook his head, wondering how this would turn out. He walked off, Botan walking with him.

Kuwabara looked at the two elder Yukimuras. Normally he would have respected them, but after everything they had said to their own granddaughter, he couldn't. "Ya know, if you had even made an effort to meet them on halfway terms, you would have a chance at knowing your great-grandchildren, but I can guarantee that those two will make every effort to keep you away from Keiko. And I can't even blame them for that." He walked off to inform his sister of these developments.

"Hiroshi...?" Megumi turned to her husband, a horrified look on her face.

"Don't worry, my dear." Hiroshi gave his wife a reassuring hug. "We were within our legal rights and were only doing what was best for Keiko. Rest assured, they will pay for taking our granddaughter. Come, there are a couple of calls that need to be made." He steered Megumi into their house. As his wife went to the kitchen to put on a kettle of water for tea, Hiroshi picked up the phone and began to dial. After a few rings the other end connected.

"Hello. Yes, this is Hiroshi Yukimura. I would like to report that my granddaughter, Keiko Yukimura, has just been kidnapped..."
