Chapter 6- The Truth is Told
Shiva, my darling, you have fallen prey to the enemy. Get up child, and rise to glory….
Boton flew through the air, dodging clouds and buildings, on her way to Yusuke's house. I hope he's there, she thought solemnly. It's a Saturday, he could be anywhere. When she reached his window, she saw his sleeping form curled up in bed. His hair was tousled, and by how wide his mouth was open, one could tell he was snoring loudly. And to her surprise, Kurama was asleep in his room as well, on a pallet on the floor. His breathing was calm as he slept threw Yusuke's snoring. He looked calm, almost too calm, especially after what happened last night. It was hard to believe that the boys before her were really demons. They looked like little toys to her, inside of a pretend playroom.
Boton snapped out of her fascination for the boys and quietly tapped on the window. Kurama's sharp hearing alerted him of the soft noise. His eyes opened immediately and went towards the source. Boton was outside, waving frantically and doing flips on her oar. He calmed down once he realized it was only Boton, and managed to bring a sleepy half-smile to his face. She motioned him to come open the window. Kurama groaned, cursing himself inwardly as he went to the window. I know I'm going to regret this later. Slowly, he opened the window.
As he had predicted, a chipper Boton flew into Yusuke's room with amazing speed. “Good morning!” her voice rang through the room. Kurama groaned. “Come on you guys! It's a beautiful day outside! Perfect for demon hunting!” she said cheerily. “We're not going after those girls early in the morning on a Saturday,” Yusuke spoke, his face in the pillow. “Who says you are going demon hunting?” Boton giggled. “I'm sure you pissed off those girls for besting them last night. I'm sure they'll be after you again.” Yusuke wasn't listening, he'd went back to sleep. Kurama was also asleep in a corner standing up. Boton took a deep breath and summoned her oar. “WAAAAAAKKKKKEEEE UUUUUUUPPPPPP!” she screamed, and began whacking Kurama and Yusuke with her oar. “What the fuck, Boton!” Yusuke yelled angrily. “Why do you have to be so fucking retarded?!” “I'm not retarded!” she retaliated. “I have some information for you that might save your life!” Kurama rubbed his throbbing head. “Can we try to be a little more civil at 8:00 in the morning, Boton,” he said wearily. “Some of up are in pain from yesterday.” “Well, if you would have stayed awake, all of this violence never would have occurred,” Boton argued. “Now, all we need is Hiei.” “What about Kuwabara?” Kurama asked. “It's…. better if he's left out as much as possible,” Boton said, choosing her words carefully. “Oh right, cause he sucks,” Yusuke said, snapping his fingers. “No! That's not it!” Boton yelled back. “Now, time for the demon whistle…” “Oh no,” said Kurama, immediately covering his ears. “What?” Yusuke asked. Boton blew into the whistle.
An amazingly annoying sound erupted from the whistle. “Damn it! What is that thing?!” Yusuke yelled, covering his ears. “The Mystic Whistle, one of your old Spirit Tools…. Remember?” Boton said, taking a break from blowing. “Uhh, sure,” Yusuke agreed, not really remembering the tool. Suddenly, a black clad blur entered the room at amazing speed. He lifted Boton into the air by her shirt. “Where is that cursed thing?” he asked darkly. “Hiei! Put her down!” Kurama said, trying to reason with him. “Yes, put me down Hiei, or king Enma will be sure to hear of this,” Boton threatened, trying to hide her nervous voice. After contemplating the results of his actions if he didn't release her, he dropped her in a heap. “Hah, thank goodness, she breathed with relief. “Um, Boton, why are you here exactly?” Yusuke asked. “Hang on dear, I'm savoring this moment of life,” she answered happily. All the boys groaned.
After a few minutes, Boton got back on her oar. Kurama took a seat on a nearby chair, Yusuke flopped on his bed, and Hiei sat on the windowsill. “Why does this feel like story time?” Yusuke asked. Nobody cared enough to respond. “Well, on to business,” Boton said, clearing her throat. “Yesterday, Koenma got some information regarding `Great One's' recruits.” “'Great One?' Who the hell is that?” Yusuke asked. “Little is known of him,” Kurama answered. “The story goes that there was a great war, even before I came into existence. It was a war between three powerful demons; Kijo, the wolf of the moon, Myoshi, the feline of tides, and Shinraya the fox of Hell. They all had their differences, but they had one thing in common. They all wanted power, and would go to any means to get it.” “Don't mean to cut you off there buddy, but was the war fought on Demon World?” Yusuke asked. “No, it was fought on Limbo,” Kurama answered. “What? That can't be!” Boton began. “Limbo is the place of eternal pain and suffering….” “I know what you're thinking,” Kurama said. “But before Limbo was completely established, it was just a branch from Hell.” Boton was fully attentive at this point. “I didn't know that,” she said, mystified. “Not many people do,” he said. “As I was saying, the war raged on for many centuries. Occasionally there would be a battle, but most of the time, they were busy killing off anything or anybody that would dare oppose them, even if it meant picking off their own kind.” “Whoa, talk about issues,” Yusuke commented. “Eventually, nobody was left after three centuries of war, except for Kijo, Myoshi, and Shinraya. They fought, completely intent on destroying each other. When the three of them were on their last limbs, Kijo came to the conclusion that no matter who the victor was, they winner would have nobody to rule over. He shared his discovery with the others, and they saw the sense it made. The trio truly began to mourn the loss of all the species that had become extinct because of their fighting. With the last of their strength, they fused together into one being, crawled through a Sudos Space, and lay dormant, until Human World's next Dark Age. Once the Dark Age came upon the world, `Great One' came to the Human Realm and fought alongside Koenma, and aided in the sealing of the opened Sudos Space.” “I can take over from here, Kurama,” Boton said. “Because of their duties, Koenma split them apart, giving back each of them their original bodies. He then appointed Kijo Guardian of the Sacred Vault, Shinraya Guardian of the Gates to Spirit World, and Myoshi Guardian of the River Styx. After a few centuries of being good, Koenma appointed them his second in command, meaning that if he were to ever be absent from his position in office, `Great One' would take over for him.”
Kurama shook his head and glanced at Hiei. He had an annoyed look on his face. Kurama understood why. “Boton, knowing all this information on `Great One is all well and good, but why does this pertain to the girls we fought yesterday?” All eyes turned to Boton. “I, uh, well, you see…” she began. “Oh gosh! I really don't know!” she exclaimed, making her cat face. Stares of interest quickly turned to stares of annoyance. “Then why did you tell us?” Yusuke said. “Because I know a certain someone who can tell us more about those girls,” Boton said. “I just needed to build up your curiosity first.” “Who are we gonna go see?” Yusuke asked. “If it's that damn Koenma, I don't wanna go!” “Don't worry! We're not gonna see him,” Boton said, waving him off. “We're going to go see Genkai.”
The four of them began to walk to the shrine past the city. “Why couldn't we have driven there?” Yusuke complained. “Kurama has a car, doesn't he?” “He wouldn't be able to park his car close to the compound anyway,” Boton said. “We'd still need to walk a ways to get there.”
“How does Genkai know about the three girls?” Kurama asked. “This isn't another one of her tests, is it?” “No! Of course not!” Boton said. “Those girls were really out to kill you guys. They wouldn't have stopped to say, `ha-ha! Just a joke from Genkai!'” Hiei's patience was running thin. “Then why the hell are we going to see her?” Hiei asked. “Because we are!” Boton yelled, shaking her fist. “We're almost there. Let's just make it there without killing each other please.”
Once they were at the front door, Boton knocked loudly, whistling as she did so. “Why are you whistling?” Yusuke asked. “So she'll know to answer the door,” Boton answered. They could hear little shuffling footsteps approaching the door. “Who is it?!” Genkai asked suspiciously. “It's us you old hag!” Yusuke yelled rudely. “Who is the `us'?” Genkai asked. “Well goodness Genkai! Don't you recognize my voice?” Yusuke yelled. Boton sighed. “Genkai, it's Yusuke, Kurama, Hiei, and me. Don't you remember the signal?” There was a long pause before Genkai opened the door. “Come in,” she said eerily.
The group of four walked into her compound slowly, checking to make sure there was nothing out of the ordinary. “Geez Genkai, what was up with the third degree you gave us at the door?” Yusuke asked, noting that the rooms were all dim. Something's not right here. She's hiding something. “We have to be more careful,” Genkai said. “We?” Kurama asked. “Yes, Koenma is staying with me now. I figure it is for the best, seeing is that my compound is secluded and harder to find than the city. Besides, nohing out of the ordinary goes on here. Who would think to look here?”
Genkai continued to lead the group into her sitting room. Inside the room, Koenma sat at a table. There were small square sitting pillows on the floor, eight in total. There was an extra chair directly across from where Koenma was sitting, obviously where Genkai was sitting before she heard them knocking. The room was dinly lit, and the door that led to the next room was shut. “That's strange,” Kurama whispered. “What?” Boton asked, just as quietly. “That door is shut. Didn't we just come through a series of doors that were open?” “So?” Yusuke interjected. “Genkai always opens and shuts her doors.” “Yes, I know, but something isn't right. I don't remember how long it takes us to get here, but I know it shouldn't have taken this much time to get to the sitting room. And all these doors open signifies that Genkai took the same route, and just didn't close the doors back. Why would she go through so many doors to answer the door? Wouldn't she want to hurry and answer the door, to see who it was knocking?” the four looked amongst each other. Yusuke shrugged his shoulders. “And also,” Kurama said, “the rooms are so dim today. I know Genkai didn't usually keep all the lights on, but the room she was in did have lights on. Seeing Koenma in here with another chair pushed out leads me to believe she was in here, and there are no lights on.” “Kurama, I think you're just being paranoid,” Boton said nonchalantly. “Yeah, calm down fox boy,” Yusuke said.
“Ok, that's enough talking amongst you four,” Genkai said. “Have a seat.” The four sat down on the pillows set out for visitors. “Are you expecting anybody else, Master Genkai?” Kurama asked, his eyes narrowed. “Nothing you need to know about right now, Kurama,” Genkai said, signaling him to shush. “There's no use trying to hide it anymore, Genkai,” Koenma sighed. “I should have known Kurama would catch on at the least that something's going on.” Kurama crossed his arms, “so I was right. You two are hiding something from us.” Hiei turned to Boton. “I bet this creature knows what's going on as well,” he said rudely. “Hey! Don't look at me!” Boton frowned. “What's going on, Koenma?” Yusuke asked, beginning to get serious. “If it's another case I'm not interested….” “It's not another case you dimwit,” Koenma said, rolling his eyes. “I couldn't give you a case anyway, since I've n\been expelled from Spirit World.” “Well then what is it?” Yusuke yelled. Genkai rolled her eyes. “Let them in, Koenma, before the baby starts whining,” she said flatly. “Let who in?” Hiei asked.
Slowly, the door leading into the next room opened. Three silhouettes stood in the doorway. The dimness in the room made it difficult to see who they were, but they could tell one was hurt. The one that was hurt had a slight limp as the three began to make their way slowly into the room. One of the three tried to help the hurt one walk better, but the hurt one shoved the other away. “Back off. I don't need your help,” the voice growled, definitely a female's voice. “Well excuse me for trying to help,” another voice came, also female. The third one stopped to look at them, not saying anything. “Hurry up! We don't have all day!” Koenma called. “Who the hell are you rushing?!” the third one yelled out, stepping fully into the room. Hiei's eyes got big, as did the girl's. “You bitch,” Hiei growled. “Well, I'm happy to see you too, Hiei,” Loret smirked. Sakura came out next. “So, that's Hiei huh? Kinda short, but taller than you. That's a shame,” she said. Kurama felt his stomach flip. “It's you” he said. Sakura looked up at him, but quickly averted her gaze, acting as though Shiva's limp was more important to her. Shiva was the last to come in, holding her leg. “Wow, you're still alive?” Yusuke laughed slightly. “Yusuke,” Koenma warned. “Yeah, and as soon as I'm better, I'm gonna slit your throat,” Shiva growled. “I'd like to see you do that, Yusuke said, standing up. Sakura got in front of Shiva. “Come any closer and I'll knock your head off,” she warned. “Sakura stop!” Koenma yelled. “You touch him and I'll rip out your heart,” Hiei said, also standing up. “You'll do it, if you can live through me beating you into the ground,” Loret threatened, clenching her fists. “All of you stop right now!” Koenma said. “You all cannot fight here! I won't allow it. Now all of you sit down so we can get this over with!”
The room quieted down. All seven of them sat back down on the floor mats, while Genkai sat at the table. “Well, Genkai, anymore surprise visitors? Satan perhaps?” Yusuke asked inquisitively. “I thought Kuwabara would be with you, but I see he isn't.” she answered. Koenma was busy rubbing his forehead. “Good grief,” he sighed. “Why the hell are we all forced to be together, Koenma?” Sakura asked, aggravated. “What's the point of all this?” Koenma sighed. “The point is, is that you three adopted new powers from Gorialus, and you should know why you were given those powers.” “Gorialus? Who's that?” Shiva asked. “Gorialus, by definition, is the divine fusion of the three most powerful demons in the Demon World around the time of the War on Limbo.” Koenma said. “When separated, the three are known by their original names, but together, as one body, they are Gorialus.” Yusuke looked at Boton. “Is that the same guy you told us about, who died and was brought back to work for Koenma?” “Exactly Yusuke,” Boton nodded. “Oh,” he said inquisitively. “So, that still doesn't explain why you're torturing us by keeping us in the same room with these psych bitches,” he added. “I'll show you a psycho bitch is you come close enough,” Loret warned, looking at Yusuke from the corner of her eye. “Why you all are here is because Gorialus has only given his powers when the help of other strong demons is necessary,” Koenma said, stopping a potential argument. “Obviously, something's going on, or is about to happen, and the power of you three is needed. Whether or not that power will be enough is up to what the challenge is.” “Ok, but why are we together?” Shiva groaned. “BECAUSE I DON'T WANT THE SIX OF YOU TO TEAR EACH OTHER APART BEFORE YOUR STRENGTH IS NEEDED!!!” Koenma shouted, growing extremely impatient. “Well why couldn't you have just said it earlier instead of being all super mysterious about it you idiot?!” Yusuke yelled. Koenma groaned loudly and plugged his ears. Genkai looked up suddenly. “Shh!” she hushed. “Quiet, I think I hear something.”
She slowly got up and made her way to the hallway. “I can hear it too,” Shiva said, and got up to follow her. “Shiva, I don't think it takes that many people to check….” Kurama, Hiei, and Sakura also got up to check what was going on. “What? What are you guys doing?” Loret rolled her eyes and stood up. “I suggest you come with us,” she said, not really caring if he did or not. “You'll be safer with us. At least we can fight,” she said as she made her way towards the hallway. “Argh! Why isn't anybody listening to me?” Koenma yelled, as he followed after Loret.
Once Loret and Koenma got outside, the first thing they noticed was the sky had darkened. The wind was blowing humid air in their faces. “Don't tell me we came out here because we heard some damn wind blow,” Sakura yelled. “No wait, look up there,” Shiva said, pointing towards the sky.
Soaring towards the earth at top speeds, ten figures began to materialize in the sky. “Who are they?” Loret asked. “Is that…. Ootake?” Boton asked. “Yeah,” Koenma said. “It's definitely the SDF.”
