YuYu Hakusho:
The Demon Familiars

(Author's note: I know next to nothing about the demon who became king after Raizen died. All I know is he's a giant guy with two horns on his head with a goatee, and that be beat Mukuro for the throne. So if he seems OOC it's because I have no idea how he acts in the first place.

*And to the reviewer who asked me the three questions:
*Why wasn't she afraid of them the first time she met them? I take it you mean both the spirit dectives and the demon lords? She felt grateful to her 'rescuers' because they saved her behind, also she was very confused as to why anyone would want her. So when the heroes couldn't answer her questions how she wanted Jordan impulsively chose to go with the demon lords with out thinking first. Then later she realized how idiotic a decision it was.
*Is she a tom boy? Yes and no. Tom boys are called that because they play a lot of sports and participate in activities thought to be mostly male oriented. While Jordan does dress like a man she has no interest in sports at all. Her 'maleness' is more just a pretend facade, though she *is* attracted to the female sex.
*What happened to the other familiars? They're coming up soon, the villains still have them. You'll just have to wait and see...Nyah :P ^^)

Ch.16

When the demon king found out that Mukuro and Yomi had knowingly brought a human into the demon realm, he stormed into Mukuro's building and demanded to see the woman. Then Mukuro explained to him that she was in fact a familiar, who had also started to imprint on Hiei. The king forgot he wanted to maim them both and became more intrigued to see what this familiar was like. Mukuro had, of course, complied to his every wish.
Hiei never fought the current king, but had been witness to what he was capable of. So, when the king said jump, you answered 'how high'. No one argued with him when he wanted to go straight to the woman's room. He requested that Hiei accompany him since he was her demon.
"I can't believe those two. I give them some slack, and then they pull this stunt," He muttered while hurrying up the stairs," A familiar, in the demon realm. This is a catastrophe, King Enma's breathing down my neck they want her in the Spirit realm so badly. It's a good thing she already has a demon, or I'd have to kill her."
Hiei's eyes widened slightly at that last sentence. The woman was a nuisance, but taking her life simply for being what she was seemed a little harsh. She hadn't chosen to be a familiar, that part wasn't her fault.
When they reached her door the king stopped.
"Go in there first, just incase she isn't dressed."
Hiei nodded, although he was curious as to why the king would care if she was nude. He wouldn't have worried about it.
She was sitting on the floor in the corner hidden by the bed. She didn't move when he entered, the fire demon made no attempt to be discreet. He walked around and stood over her. She was reading a book, Kurama must have given it to her. The woman glanced up at him momentarily, then went back to reading.
"Put that away," He told her," Our sovereign is here."
"Sovereign?"
She marked her page and stood up. Hiei walked back to the door and motioned for the king to come inside. The huge demon towered over both of them. She was clearly intimidated by the king, but seemed to relax slightly when the king smiled.
"Now that's funny," He laughed," I thought you would be more frightening than *this*. I don't know what I was assuming. They did say you had a human body."
She gave a weak smile and glanced at Hiei.
"Now, *you* are not suppose to be here, so we're going to have to send you to the Spirit World. And," He looked at Hiei," You are going with her."
'Dammit' ,The fire demon thought,' Why me? Send the fox with her.'
"Hn," He said out loud in acknowledgement.
"Alright, now that has been cleared up I'm leaving."
With that he walked out of the room and shut the door behind him.
"Wow, he wasn't so bad," She sounded surprised.
Hiei smirked," He only acted that way because you are human and female and he didn't want to terrify you."
She shrugged," Well, then I guess being a weak human female has its payoff."
He walked closer to her. Being sent to Koenma with her was a pain, but right now he was more interested in how strong she'd become. He'd seen the condition the shower was in, someone had put their fist into it and left a small pot-hole.
"How hard did you hit that wall?"
"Huh?"
"The shower tiles, how hard did you hit them?"
"I...really can't remember, I was pissed. Why?"
"Hn," He glanced away, searching the room. He wanted to test it but he didn't want her to break anything else.
"Hit me," He told her.
"Huh? Why?"
"I want to see if you're still as strong."
She looked at him like he'd lost his mind," Umm, I don't think that's a good idea..."
"Do it anyway." He snapped.
The woman frowned," Uh...ok..."
She pulled her fist back and punched him squarely in the left shoulder. Hiei moved slightly over, just in case he was wrong. It didn't hurt at all, but she didn't hurt *herself* either. The familiar gained quite a bit of strength, but not nearly enough to be of any good against an A class or even B class demon. A regular human would be no problem for her though.
There was about three minutes of silence until the woman started to fidget, running her fingers through her hair, crossing her arms over her chest and then letting them fall back to her sides. It amused him how easy it was to interpret her thoughts, the jagan wasn't required to see into her mind. She sighed lightly then said," Anything else?"
She sounded perfectly amiable when she asked, which in a polite way meant 'get the hell out already'. If she wanted him to keep his distance he would respect that, for the mean time.
"Hn, that was fine, go back to your book if you want." He then left the room ignoring the obscene gesture that was directed at his back.

When the fox learned of the king's visit he wasn't sure whether to be relieved or worried. While it meant Jordan and Hiei were out of the demon lords's scheme for now they were going to have to leave the demon world and either return to Genkai's temple or go to the spirit realm. As much as he hated to admit it the familiar was safer staying where she was. If the ones who were after her decided to attack in full force a handful of A and S class demons stood a better chance than the entire spirit world army.
While returning from the lower floors he saw Hiei leaving. The fire demon glanced at him when they passed each other but didn't say anything. Kurama stopped," Hiei?"
The smaller man halted a few seconds later, his back to Kurama," What?"
The tone of his voice made Kurama wonder if the fire demon was angry with someone. Then again he had just walked out of the familiar's room.
"Did you speak with the king?"
"Yes. And I have to accompany you when you leave."
"I see," Kurama nodded. Hiei glanced over his shoulder at him with the usually untraceable hints of melancholy the demon was so determined at suppressing naked in his eyes. Just his eyes, his face was void of anything that resembled emotion, but that was all Kurama needed.
"Hiei...," He said quietly.
Then as if the demon had realized Kurama saw it his eyes became as cold and hard as blood-red diamonds, the somber inner self which he rarely showed vanished.
Kurama held his tongue as he slinked away, now was not the time to lecture him about anger management.
'What is making you suffer? Is it her or...?'
He shook his head, 'How cruel is fate to place this upon him?'
In general Hiei loathed the human race he'd made exceptions for Yusuke and near the end of the Dark tournament he'd even accepted Kuwabara as a true team-member. While he was not friends with either of them in a way that humans would consider being 'friendship' in Hiei's strange life-code it was to as close to it as he could ever get. Nearly the entire demon race cared nothing about family ties or loyalty, they had no use for them, but Hiei loved his sister. Hiding his identity from her in order to keep her safe killed him on the inside, but he was determined to protect her like a shadowy guardian angel. He'd felt content in leaving her with Genkai, which showed how much faith he had in the old psychic's abilities.
A movement in the corner of his eye brought his attention inside the room where the familiar was standing near the doorway. Kurama was not in a mood to smile so he gave her a blank face instead. She made no motion to walk closer and almost seemed nervous.
"You...you alright?," She asked cautiously.
Kurama shook his head.
"Is it in anyway my fault?," The woman chewed her lip.
"Why would you assume it was your fault?"
"I...," She looked at the floor," Um...It's...."
The familiar sighed," I...never mind...It wouldn't make much sense if I explained it anyway..."
Kurama frowned," No, you will not run from this any longer, I wont allow it."
The woman's eyes widened in confusion as he began to walk into the room, he stopped inches in front of her with a determined spark in his eye.
"Tell me what you were going to say."
"I...," She backed up," What's gotten into you, Flowers?"
"No, do not call me that right now," He said softly," Your prolonging the inevitable has gone on long enough. Will you hide from this forever? Or," He leaned in," Will you except Hiei as your demon?"
"What?"
She clenched her jaw," What gives you the right to ask me that question? Who do you think you are?"
Even though she was trying her hardest to be aggressive Kurama could tell she was weary of him. When the fox didn't answer she narrowed her eyes in contempt, but it wasn't directed at him," Figures...stupid me for thinking you were any different than them...god I'm such a pathetic idiot," Her face fell and she balled her fists," I should have just taken the chance and ended it all when I was 18, even then I was too big of a damned coward," Her voice was a whisper.
"I can't take this...," The last sentence was barely audible as she buckled her knees and dropped to the floor, hands gripping the sides of her head.
Kurama made no attempt to comfort the woman but a twinge of guilt entered his mind none the less. He'd developed sympathy from his human mother and tended to feel it mostly toward human females. Never toward demons, though Hiei was a special case. Except, she had done this before in a failed endeavor to get out of sleeping with the fire demon, he wasn't sure whether the familiar was being honest or meaning to play him for a fool again.
"Is that all you had to say?," He shook his head," You were ready to surrender at 18...such a grievous waste that would have been..."
She rose her head a notch but would not look him in the eye. Kurama turned around," You have a little over an hour to come to terms with this, Hiei does not need a person so depressed around him."
Leaving the woman alone he closed the door behind himself. He knew it was unmerciful to down trod her but he was running out of options, he'd tried kindness and it proved ineffective against her dogged will to keep clear of anything remotely stressful. The fire demon was correct in claiming that her brain fell out whenever a formidable circumstance arose. At times Hiei was a better judge of character than he was and the fire demon hadn't even lived with humans for twenty-two years. The fox sighed and opened the door to his room.
"Hiei?"
The fire demon sat on the end of his bed, arms resting in his lap. He glanced up at Kurama.
"I've decided to let the bond die."
His eyebrows arched in surprise," What did you just say?"
"I said I'm going to let it fade, I do not want the woman as my familiar."
"But why?"
He closed his eyes," Because I have no use for her."
"That is far from true Hiei, besides how will you keep yourself from going to her? It hurts you every time."
"That is my business," He said quietly. The fire demon stood up and headed to the door, but was stopped by Kurama who was in his path.
Hiei did not demand that he move out of his way, nor did he force him out of the way. Kurama knew perfectly well that in order to get the real truth of his decision from the younger demon he would have to resort to violence, and there was a probability that would not work either.
"Hiei...tell me why."
There was no answer. Would a bluff work?
"If you do not tell me I *will* take this to Mukuro and Yomi."
"Be my guest." He said dryly.
'No use, he called me on it,' Kurama frowned,' Now what can I do?'
Then the smaller demon sighed as if he'd never slept in his entire life," Do not treat me like a masochistic child, Fox. I simply *told* you of my decision, I did not ask you to give your opinion on it."
"You knew what would happen if you did Hiei, do not treat *me* as if I would let it in one ear and out the other without considering the consequences first."
Hiei closed his eyes," Hn, my mistake."
He walked around Kurama and out the door.
"Hiei!," The fox called after him.
Kurama sighed heavily. How would he explain this to Yusuke and the others? Though he doubted they would be shocked to hear it, they also knew the fire demon fairly well. In any case, the fox now had two emotionally disturbed people to deal with and was very glad he took three semesters of psychology.
