The Demon Familiars

Ch.2
Alberta, Canada

A helicopter flew overhead searching the forest below for fires. Unknown to them a force more dangerous than any fire was waiting underneath the ground, chained to a wall. Three of them, and none were glad to be there. Two women and a man, one Japanese, one American and one South American. Not that the room they were in wasn't nice by anyone's highest standards. It looked like a 19th century Spanish palace mixed in with some Asian influence. The chains that bound them were lined with cloth so it wouldn't rub the skin. Despite their captors attempts to make them comfortable, they most certainly were not.

Jordan Vellez was the least comfortable. Her right foot was pushing against the painted wall in an attempt to yank the chain's end link out of its attatchment.
"Sonofabitch!," She swore under her breath,"Break damn you..."
The man, who introduced himself as Kenji, sat quietly in his frumpled buisness suit, arms crossed over his chest, brow furrowed. The last catpive,Alma, who claimed to be from Argentina, was crying softly into her floral print skirt, face hidden by her knees and hair. They had all arrived on the same day, Jordan being the first. None of them had ever met eachother before that day, and not one had the slightest idea as to why they were there.
"Shit,"Jordan dropped the chain in defeat and slumped against the wall,"Nothing's working...I wish those bastards would do something already instead of making us sit here."
She galnced at the Japanese man, he didn't look angry or scared. His face had that expression of deep concentration. The other girl, who didn't look over sixteen, seemed to have given up entirely. At least she had finialy calmed down, when the strange men in brown coats had carried her in wailing Jordan had felt the need to hit her so she'd stop. If she did hit her then the girl probably would have started screaming. Jordan decided that Alma wasn't going to be of any help, that left Kenji. Jordan didn't think he'd given up, he just seemed to be waiting for whatever came next. She, how ever, wasn't finished, not in the least. Stubbornness was her strongest personality trait. The room obviously didn't have any large pointed objects in it so trying to cut the restraint off wasn't an option. She doubted the walls were made of plaster or wood, therefore yanking the chain out wouldn't work either. That left digging it out. She searched for any blunt metal objects, there was a heavy looking lamp on a desk some fifteen feet away, but she figured the chain wasn't long enough for her to reach it. She glanced at Alma, who was ten feet away from her, maybe she was close enough.
"Alma."
She didn't raise her head.
"Alma!,"Jordan called louder.
The sobbing stopped, and the girl answered,"What?"
"Look, I need your help, can you try to reach that lamp over there?,"She pointed,"Please?"
"What for?,"She asked while rubbing her eyes.
"So we can get the fuck out of here."
Alma shook her head sadly,"We can't, we'll never leave."
"Like hell we can't, don't you dare give up."
Alma thought for a second then slowly got up. Her chain rattled and clinked as she walked to the wooden table. She had to stretch her arm but managed to get the lamp.
Jordan jumped up and huried to to her, but the chains left a five foot gap between them.
"Just toss it,"She told her.
Alma threw it in an underhanded roll. Jordan stopped it with her foot, tossed it up, snatched it, said "thank you!," then ran back to the wall. She brought the wide base of it down on the area around the restraint in an overhand smash. Jordan would have threw her arms up in triumph if she hadn't been holding it. The impact had left an egg sized dent in the wall. Suprisingly, the wall was made partly of wood beams surrounded by stone, contrary to her previous assumption that it was probably concrete. She pounded it until she could tell the restraint was lose. Then she set the lamp on the floor, grabbed the chain with both hands and pulled with everything in her. It disconnected so fast she lost her balance and fell backwards onto her butt. Jordan sat in silence, hoping no one outside heard the noise, and waited.
When the door didn't open after a while Jordan sighed in relief. Her shoulders and arms were numb, and sweat dripped down her back soaking her black t-shirt.
"Ok. That's enough for me,"Then she let out a deep breath.
"May I have that lamp?,"Jordan turned her head when Kenji spoke to her. He stood up and walked as close as he could before the chain stopped him.
"Sure,"Still sitting down she rolled it to him. Kenji followed her example, but he managed to get the attatchment off much faster. After he started on Alma's restraint, and Jordan headed to the door. It was, of course, locked.
"Ah, what the hell...,"She figured. Jordan knocked lightly on the wood door four times, and waited to see if anyone was stupid enough to open it.

After Yusuke, Kurama, and Kuwabara had met up with Botan they went to the Spirit World to see Koenma. They stood in Koenma's office, waiting for him to return from the resource room.
The atmosphere of the office was tensely serious. So much in fact that Yusuke didn't feel the slightest inclination to call him 'pacifier junkie', runt, or toddler when he entered. He was followed by George, his assistant, who's vision was blocked by a mountian of books and scrolls. The blue oger carefully set the pile down on Koenma's desk and left the office in a hurry.
"Lord Koenma,"Botan said,"I brought them just as you requested."
"Thank you, Botan,"He said sadly. He turned to Yusuke,"I'm very relived you decided to show, Yusuke."
"I wanted to know what's going on, that's all,"He shrugged.
Koenma nodded,"I guess you noticed the wonderfull moods every one here are in."
Kurama spoke,"The message was very unsettling, I can understand why everyone would be so tired."
"Yes, I figured you would know exactly what I was talking about considering you are 300 years old."
Yusuke glanced at Kurama,"What do you mean 'exactly what you were talking about'?"
"Koenma told me more in the message sent to me beacuse he knew you wouldn't understand,"Kurama said,"In the Human realm it would be like finding out that Unicorns really existed."
Yusuke was confused by that,"Unicorns?...What?"
Koenma sighed heavily,"Someone from the Demon world claims to have found familiars. To a demon it's the same as a human claiming they found a Unicorn. That's what he ment."
Everyone was suprised by what was said by Kuwabara next," Familiars? You mean like a witch's familiar?"
"You know what they are, Kuwabara?,"Koenma asked.
"Well, my sister was into that earth-magic stuff when she was in highschool,"He said,"She use to make me listen while she talked about it. I thought it was boring as Hell."
"Excuse me?,"Yusuke said impatiently,"Would someone like to explain what's going on?"
"Sorry Urameshi,"Koenma selected a scroll from the pile and rolled it open,"The legend of the Familiars is very old, over nine and a half centuries to be exact. It was first believed to be true, but no explorer from any of the realms was able to find even one. So it became a hoax, much like the story of Bigfoot, or the city of Shangra-La."
"Ok, so it's a legend, big deal. What's everybody so scared for?"
Kurama answered,"The reason is due to what the familiar's are capable <i>of</i>...the power to turn a demon into a force incredible enough to be called a god."
"Seriously?!,"Kuwabara yelled.
"No way!,"Yusuke echoed,"<i>That</i> powerful?"
Koenma nodded,"Now do you see why everyone's so worked up?"
"Yeah,"He gulped.
Kurama looked at the small Spirit World ruler,"What is our plan of action?"
"We sent a spy to check out the location of where we heard they were being kept,"Then he turned to the Blue haired woman,"Botan, did you bring the map?"
"Yes,"She said. Pulling a large scroll out of the sleave of her kimono she set it on Koenma's desk,"This is located in the human world. Alberta, Canada, in the northern hemisphere. They weren't able to get past the second level, so from then on you'll be walking blind. They found two entrances. The main one, which looks like a giant rock formation, and a side door located near a small waterfall. Both are guarded, so you'll have to take out the guards without being noticed."
The three heros gathered around Botan as she continued to explain.
"All of the least used tunnles and passages are marked in blue. The most heavily guarded areas are marked in red. Avoid those places at any cost, or you might not make it out. I, of course, will have a second copy of the map incase something happens to yours. I'll keep contact with you as much as possible."
"Man, you guys sure planned this out,"Yusuke observed,"So, we go in there, find those familiars, rescue them, then get our butts the hell out of there, right? Sounds easy enough..."
"Correct,"Botan said,"But we called in back-up for you just in case."
"Who?"
"Remember the two demons you fought in the Dark Tournament? Jin and Touya? They've offered to help. They're going to meet you there."
"Those two? All right, now were talking!,"Yusuke smiled,"So when do we leave?"
"As soon as you're ready."
Kurama nodded,"I suggest we train for this Yusuke, we should start right now."
"Good idea."
"Hey, I'm coming with you,"Kuwabara pointed to himself,"Five heads are better than four."
"I suggest you don't Kuwabara,"Koenma said,"I hate to say it but I don't think you're strong enough."
"Say's who?!,"He yelled,"I can still fight pretty damn good in my opinion."
"Sorry buddy,"Yusuke put a hand on his friend's shoulder,"It'd probably be better for you to sit this one out."
Kuwabara mumbled an insult, and shoved his hands into his pants pockets.
"Now if you'll excuse me, I have paperwork to catch up on,"Koenma shooed them out,"Good luck to you."
Before the group parted Yusuke turned to Botan,"Hey, can you do me a favor?"
"What is it?"
"Could you tell Keiko what's going on? You don't have to tell her everything, just that's it's really important and that I have to help, ok?"
"Sure,"Botan smiled.
"Thank you!,"He hurried to catch up to Kurama,"See ya later big guy!,"He called back to Kuwabara.
"You'd better come back in one piece Urameshi, or I'm gonna say 'I told you so'!"
"Don't worry, I plan on it!,"Was his last sentance before he dissapeared behind a corner.

Later that day in the Demon realm a certain three eyed demon was trying to sleep, without much success. The past week had been hell for him sleep wise, strange nightmares plauged his dreams. He was at a loss as to why. Hiei lay on his back, staring at the dark ceiling, all he could think about was that strange thing he saw. The dream started out the same, everything was black, and in the middle was a huge rock made of dark glittering stone. As always he was sitting at the very top, looking down. Then the voice started.
"Help me,"It whispered. Then a glowing, purple mist would form near the bottom of the rock and rise up, toward him. Hiei was never able to move from that spot, no matter how hard he willed himself to. The mist would surround him, then he would feel a chill of power. Inhuman power, but not demon either, something else. A hand always came out of that mist, a pale grayish-blue hand with long nails. It looked like it belonged to a female. Then just as it reached his face, he would wake up. Normaly a dream wouldn't get a second thought from him, but these dreams felt <i>real</i>. At least the energy he felt was real. Something was trying to reach him in his sleep, but for what?
"Who are you?,"He whispered.
He shivered suddenly, almost as if the creature had answered him, but not with words.
'<i>What</i> are you?' He thought. He placed his hand over his third eye, it should have picked up something that powerful, but it wasn't reacting at all.
He almost jumped when a shadow moved through the room. Except it wasn't a shadow, it was Rhianon.
"Don't you ever knock?,"Hiei snapped at him.
"Would it make a difference if I had?"
The smaller demon sighed. He had a point.
"No,"Hiei said closing his eyes,"What do you want?"He swung his feet over the edge of the bed and sat up.
"Will you be able to perform tomorrow, your lack of sleep has made you weaker."
He smirked,"My aren't you perceptive. I'll be fine, just make sure you can keep up with me."
Rhianon nodded, then he dissapeared back into the night.
Hiei lay back down and continued to stare into nothing.
'Why is this happening? What do you want from me?'
