The Demon Familiars
Ch.3
Canada was very cold. Yusuke noted as they treaded through the brush that next time he was bringing a jacket. He hugged himself and shivered. He glanced at Kurama, who didn't seem effected by the climate at all," How far is it?"
The red-haired man checked the map," I'd say about...half a mile north."
"Good, because I'm freezing my ass off."
Kurama chuckled and looked at their compass again. They trudged on. At least it was quiet, not a car for at least a mile in every direction.
A breeze rustled Yusuke's hair. Then it knocked him over. He landed nearly on his face in a pile of moss, "What the...?"
He leaped up and searched for his assailant.
"Hello, Urameshi!,"He recognized the voice instantly, as it was owned by the only Irish demon he'd ever met.
"Jin, I see you haven't changed," He said staring up at another red headed man, who just happened to be hovering in the air. In a tree next to him stood a shorter man with light blue hair. Yusuke recognized him as Touya, the ice magician.
Jin landed softly on the ground in front of Kurama, Touya jumped down and walked next to Jin.
"Touya, Jin, we were expecting you,"Kurama nodded a greeting to both.
"We weren't expecting you to be so late,"Touya smiled.
Yusuke laughed,"Yeah, well we had a hard time finding the place, considering it's in the middle of nowhere."
"Actually there is a human ski lodge nearby,"Jin said," It's just far enough away that no one will see us."
"That and it's not skiing season,"Yusuke added.
"Shall we continue?,"Kurama said.
"After you."Touya gestured for the fox demon to go," You have the map." Kurama smiled and began walking. Some fifteen minutes later they arrived at the small waterfall Botan told them about.
"'Tis a shame we can't sit out here and enjoy the scenery,"Jin said sadly.
Then a movement behind the fall sent them all scattering into the trees.
The water parted on one side and a tall person covered by a robe emerged. It stepped out and the fall closed a few seconds later.
"So that's how they do it,"Yusuke whispered to Touya, who was sitting next to him in the branches of a Fir tree.
The hooded figure stood motionless on a rock near the fall, luckily he was turned away from them.
"Hey Touya, think you could hit him with an ice shard from here?," He asked the demon," My spirit gun would make too much noise."
Touya nodded. He raised one hand, palm up, and a thin blade of ice formed. He held his arm out and the blade shot through the air, hitting the figure directly in the torso. It collapsed onto the rock with a small thud, then slid off and sunk into the water. They waited, and when the creature never came back up, they figured it was dead. Yusuke motioned to Kurama and Jin in the tree behind him that it was safe.
Both demons left the tree and went back to the ground, Yusuke and Touya did the same. After no one else came out they decided to move forward into the open.
Yusuke and Kurama used the rocks to keep from falling in the water. Jin flew and carried Touya by the arms. They landed on either side of the waterfall.
"I'll go first,"Kurama offered.
"Sure?"
He nodded and scaled the cliff to the point where the creature emerged. Just as the water had parted for the hooded figure, it did the same for Kurama.
"Right behind you,"Jin said.
Yusuke was next, Touya last. After the waterfall closed behind him Yusuke noticed they were in a small niche carved out behind the fall. At the end of it was a metal door, without a doorknob. Yusuke didn't see the word 'push' painted on it, so he guessed it opened from the inside.
"So, what, do we nock?,"He said, grinning.
Jin shrugged and smiled, Touya raised his eyebrows.
"Yusuke...,"Kurama began.
Ignoring the fox demon's protest he raised both fists and did a drum beat on the door.
Imagine the surprise of the guard when he opened the door to find a grinning Yusuke holding back his arm, and his fist aimed right at the creature's face.
"Hi,"He said before he knocked the guard to the floor with one hit.
"Let's go," He called back to the other's," I can't believe they only had one guard, this is going to be more boring than I..."
His words stopped short when he entered the hall next to the side door, which was crowded with robed guards. All their attentions switched to the four wide-eyed men standing in the halls' archway.
"Never mind...,"Yusuke smiled as the guards swarmed towards them.

Not too far away two more figures dressed in black were standing at the other side entrance, except they weren't guards. Hiei and Rhianon had arrived at the exact same place Yusuke and Kurama met with the others an hour before. It was also where the second side entrance was.
"I take it this is the place?,"Hiei said eyes searching the moss covered ground.
"The door should be located in this area,"Rhianon confirmed behind him.
"Good, look for it then,"Hiei unsheathed his sword and began jabbing the end into the ground. When he heard an echoing clank he stopped, kneeled down and felt in the moss until he discovered a ring shaped handle.
"I found it," He said to the tall demon. Rhianon walked to where Hiei was standing. The fire demon pulled the door open with a creak.
"You first," He told him.
Rhianon dropped effortlessly into the dark hole. It was over seven feet deep because he couldn't see the other demons' head and he was well over six feet tall. That or Rhianon had done his disappearing act and melted into the shadows again. Hiei leaped into the darkness closing the door behind him.
His third eye glowed providing more light than the handful of small torches that adorned the long passage way.
"I assume we go straight...,"Hiei said sarcastically. The two demons walked down the passage and vanished into the darkness.

"Run!," Jordan screamed to her fellow captives. They had the fortune of finding passages with no guards patrolling them for a few hours, but their luck ran out. They were now being chased by six of them, and they were gaining fast.
'Shit, I can't believe this is happening to me' She thought. Her lungs started to burn, the cramp was next. She couldn't out run them for long, after a while they would need a place to hide. Unfortunately there was nothing but a never-ending stone hallway. She heard a scream, and looked back to see that Alma had tripped. She slowed down but Kenji yelled," No! Keep going!,"
Then he whirled around and ran to where the girl fell.
Jordan continued to run. She heard more yelling behind her but didn't stop.
If the other two were captured that meant she was alone. Alone with no idea where she was going, or what she would find later on .

One level up from where Jordan was stood the reason she was there. A tall man with short greenish-blue hair, dressed in yellow and white. He was joined by a dark haired man who whispered into his ear.
"They have gotten to the third levels entrance, have they?," the man said," No matter, they will not make it through that level."
"Should I send the reinforcements?," the other man asked.
"If you so choose. I will leave that up to you Anoril, you are the head of security after all."
"Yes Niko,"Anoril bowed his head. Just then a robed guard ran in and spoke to Anoril. The dark haired man turned to Niko,"They have managed to catch two of the escaped Familiars, one is still uncalled for."
Niko laughed," I see, so they *are* resourceful. My master will be pleased to hear this. I will relay the message to him. You may go deal with our intruders."
"Yes sir,"Anoril hurried out, followed by the guard.
Niko gazed at the large machine before of him. This machine was his master's pride and glory.
"And so it begins..."

"Shot gun!"
The stairwell glowed neon blue from Yusuke's energy. Several guards were hit with the spray, either blowing limbs off or setting them on fire. Above him, Jin created a torrent, sending some of the creatures flying into the stone walls. Kurama and Touya held up the rear, and they were holding it up fairly well. A combination of the fox demon's rose petals and the ice magician's razor shards kept their enemies from surging forward.
"Move Urameshi!"Jin yelled.
Yusuke ducked as Jin blasted a tornado through the middle of the passage in front of the stairs. Every guard was thrown into the walls leaving sort of a walkway.
"And he parted the waters!,"Jin flew forward punching the guards who weren't quite unconscious yet. Yusuke dashed through the hall, followed by Kurama and Touya. The magician skidded to a halt long enough to build a wall of solid ice behind them.
Kurama noticed it," Is that a new ability?"
"I learned it a few months ago,"Touya said when he'd caught up.
"Well, it came in very handy."
The blue haired demon nodded," It should hold them off for awhile."
"We need all the tricks we can get. There is a possibility we'll simply be outnumbered."
"True, but at least we wont die of boredom."
Kurama smiled," Indeed."
Kurama gasped when a shattering sound echoed in the narrow passage. After the shatter came a number of screeching noises.
"It didn't hold as long as I thought it would,"Touya said.
They sped up their pace.
"I only hope Yusuke and Jin are having better luck!"
Further up front the other two team members were faring much better, until Anoril's 'reinforcements' showed up. The narrow hall led to a large rectangular room, but in it was something neither of them had seen before.
"What the hell is that?"Yusuke gaped as he craned his neck to see the giant that stood before them. It was a cross between a Lion and a wolf, with a scorpion's tail. It also had the curling horns of a Ram. It was close in size to an Elephant, and it more than likely didn't have obedience training.
"I don't think we'll be getting through this one very quickly..."Jin said in amazement.
"No kidding."
The giant let out a deafening roar. Jin yelped and covered his ears. In doing so he lost his concentration and drifted slowly to the floor. Yusuke cringed, after the last of the roar was gone his ears were still ringing. Jin wasn't moving from where he landed, he could only imagine how much it had hurt the wind master's sensitive ears.
"Yusuke!"
He heard Kurama calling his name," Heads up you two, we've got a big one in here!"
The two demons ran into the room and stopped dead in their tracks.
"And we have a hoard of guards coming this way!,"Kurama yelled.
"Shit,"Yusuke tried to think of a way out, but his idea storage came up empty.
"Touya, can you make another ice barrier?"Kurama asked.
"I can try, I don't think my energy is fully regenerated from the last one."
Touya closed his eyes and a thin pane of ice formed where his hands were. When it was only half completed he dropped to his knees in exhaustion.
"I'm sorry, that's the best I can do."
"It's alright,"Kurama released his spiritual energy trying to coax the many tree roots above them to form a barrier in front of the ice. Afterwards he too dropped to the ground in exhaustion.
"Kurama! Touya!"Yusuke screamed. He managed to drag Jin over to the far wall, and out of the way, but now the other two were just as helpless. The monster seemed to take a sudden interest in the two demons and was lurking towards them.
Yusuke thought about using his spirit gun at half power, but knew it would bring the entire place down on their heads. He chose to try and outrun the creature instead and pull his comrades out of harms way.
'Come on Yusuke, move!' he thought to himself. Unfortunately he knew he would never make it in time.
