The Demon Familiars
Ch.5
"Hello?," Jordan called softly into the darkness. No response came back. She couldn't tell weather it was a dream or if she was dead. None of her dreams had ever been that vivid. Out of nowhere a large sparkling rock appeared, for no reason.
She touched it, it felt cold, like it was actually there. Then an odd feeling told her that if she looked up she would have all of her current questions answered. She followed the rock up with her eyes, and there was a person sitting at the top. The person had their back to her.
"Hey!,"She called to get their attention. The person was either ignoring her, or hadn't heard what she said.
"Hey!,"She yelled louder this time.
A few seconds later came an annoyed reply of," What?".
Jordan recognized the voice, it was the guy she met right before she 'woke up' in the strange, empty place.
"I've met you before haven't I?," She asked, just to be sure.
"My don't you have a superb memory?," The words were so thick with sarcasm she almost flinched.
"Uh, yeah...where am I?," She began to walk around the rock to get a better view of his face," This is a dream right, I'm not dead?"
The guy snorted," How would I know?"
"I have no clue, that's why I was asking."
Jordan reached the other side and stopped. She gazed up at him. His face looked different for some reason, she wasn't sure if it was the angle or because he was far away. Then she noticed it. There was an eerie purple glow coming off him. Jordan squinted at it, the brightest part seemed to be located in the middle of his forehead.
'What is that?' she wondered. She strained her eyes to decipher what was causing the light. Jordan decided the only way to find out was to climb up and get a closer look. The rock was so smooth she had a hard time getting a good foot hold. About half the way she gave up and stopped climbing.
"Shit,"She hissed as her foot slipped and she slid a few inches down.
"Graceful, aren't you?," The guy said mockingly.
"Friendly, aren't you?," She retorted, using the same tone.
The guy curled his lip and let out a low hiss, which was not the reaction she was expecting. He stood up, and Jordan gasped when he was standing directly above her, glaring down. He knelt down on one knee, still glaring. Their faces were inches apart.
"Get out of my head...*now*,"He growled in a whisper.
Jordan was stunned when she found out what was making the purple light. There was an eye in the middle of his forehead. The glowing eye was the last thing she remembered when the dream vanished.

Genkai had been all but surprised when the banged up team showed up at her temples' door, and neither of the four had any idea who the blood drenched female was. It seemed Genkai was the only one with enough sense to check the woman's jacket pockets for ID. Her name was Jordan, and she was from the United States. Which also meant she more than likely only spoke English. Genkai could speak seven languages fluently, so she had that part covered. However, trying to explain to the young woman what she was doing there and why would be no easy task. She had no clue as to how the supposed human would react. Yukina had gone right to work healing the bruised familiar and changing her ruined clothing. It was amazing how much the ice maiden was willing to help, and how much they usually took her for granted.
She turned when the door slid open and Yukina spoke,"Genkai, she's awake now."
The old woman walked in to find the dark haired woman sitting up Indian style holding a cup of tea in her hands.
Jordan glanced at her for a minute then continued to stare at the tea.
Genkai sat down across from her, but remained silent. She waited for the girl to speak first.
"I...,"Jordan began," I need to call my parents, do you have a phone I can use?," She looked at Genkai.
"I'm sorry, no."
"Is there a phone anywhere around here?"
Genkai shook her head," I'm sorry, but you can't call them."
"So, I'm a prisoner here too, huh?,"She asked quietly.
Genkai closed her eyes," That depends on how you'll see the situation after I explain to the best of my ability what is going on."
"Oh, alright. Then explain away," The girl shrugged and smiled. Although the smile was a sad one Genkai almost felt the need to smile back.
Yukina set the bowl of water with the towel she used to put on Jordan's forehead down and silently left.
"Do you know what you are?," Genkai asked her.
"What do you mean?"
"Do you think you are a human?"
"Well, yes, last time I checked. Why?"
Genkai sighed thinking of how to tell her.
"I'm *not* a human,?" Jordan asked curiously.
She shook her head. Then raised her eyebrows in surprise when the woman laughed.
"Oh wow, this is fucking incredible, *I'm* not human,"Jordan covered her eyes with one hand,"All those years I wished I wasn't normal," Then she continued to laugh.
"This is no laughing matter I assure you,"Genkai said, slightly annoyed by her outburst.
"I'm sorry, that was just very ironic. I didn't mean to laugh," She choked back a snicker,"So if I'm not human, what am I?"
"A familiar."
"Huh? You mean like a witch's familiar?"
"No, a demon familiar."
"Demon familiar, never heard of those."She scratched her chin.
"Most have not. Now, I would like for you to meet someone. He is one of the four who brought you to me. His name is Kurama."
"Ok."
Genkai rose and left the room. She found Kurama leaning against a Cherry tree. The fox demon didn't even need to look at her to know what she wanted. He simply followed her inside and slid the door shut behind him.
The woman stared at Kurama, a perplexed expression on her face.
"Hello,"Kurama said.
"Hi,"She said, and seemed unsure of what to make of him.
Genkai went back to sitting across from her like before, Kurama sat beside Genkai.
"Sorry for being nosy, but are you wearing purfume?,"Jordan asked the red haired man.
"No,"Kurama smiled,"Why do you ask?"
"You smell like flowers."
Genaki was startled. The woman hadn't even realized the significance of what she'd just said.
She and Kurama exchanged glances. Then Genkai nodded to Kurama, who in turn nodded back. The fox spirit stood and walked out.
The woman looked confused," Did I just do something wrong?"
"No, you didn't. But I now have a theory."
Kurama returned some fifteen minutes later along with, Yusuke, Jin, Touya, Kuwabara, Botan, and Yukina.
They sat in that order in a semi-circle around Jordan, who looked twice as unsure as she had before.
"The reason for this is I now believe you have the ability to sense a demons' power,"Genkai spoke," I want you to try as best you can to tell me who is human in this room and who is not."
"Alright, umm,"She raised her finger and pointed to Kuwabara,"The only one I don't get a weird feeling from is...him."
Genkai nodded," Very good. Kuwabara is completely human. What about the rest?"
Jordan studied each one," I don't know, it's just one big jumble of...stuff."
"Stuff?"
She scratched her head," Well, there's a bunch of feelings and smells mixed together. I recognize the flowery smell from...Kurama, was it?"
"Yes, but what else do you feel?"
"The room most definitely got colder. I think I'm getting goosebumps on my arms."
Genaki nodded,"There are ice demons in the room. Can you tell me who?"
Jordan bit her lip,"No, I can't. I can't concentrate on it long enough, plus I have no idea what I'm doing, so..."
"Interesting. Alright everyone out except for you two," She said pointing to Yusuke and Touya.
After the room had cleared Genkai said,"How about now?"
"The room's still freezing so I take it one's an ice demon."
"Very good, can you tell which one?"
Jordan got up and walked in front of them. She bent over at the waist, and studied both. She shivered, then gestured to Touya,"Him?"
Genkai nodded.
She glanced at Yusuke,"I have no idea what he is."
"That's understandable, Yusuke is human *and* a demon."
"Oh."
Genkai turned to the two young men,"Thank you, I'll call you if I need any more help."
Touya left without a word.
"Sure Grandma," Yusuke muttered.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Yusuke joined the large group which was gathered outside.
"It's strange, I've never known anyone who had that ability," He heard Kurama say,"She told me I smelled like flowers, but misinterpreted it as something else."
"Yeah, and she guessed Touya had something to do with ice,"Yusuke added.
"Perhaps it's our auras she's acute to,"Touya said quietly.
"Or it could just be our souls,"Kuwabara added,"All I know is that girl gave off the creepiest vibe I've ever felt."He hugged himself and quivered.
"One thing's for sure,"Jin said, while floating above their heads,"The lass isn't human."
"Yeah, I'll say." Yusuke sat down on the steps leading from the porch,"But what *is* she?"
"A familiar."Touya shrugged.
"No, I'm mean where the hell did she come from?"
"I doubt anyone living at this moment knows where they originally came from. They may simply be a spiritual anomaly,"Kurama said.
"A spiritual what?,"Kuwabara called from his spot on the porch.
"As in they don't have a clue,"Yusuke answered.
"Oh."
"I contacted Koenma, he says to keep her guarded at all hours. Never let her out of our sight for a second," Botan said.
"Good, you and Kuwabara get the first shift,"Yusuke grinned at her.
"What? Why me?,"Kuwabara cried in anxiety.
"'Cause we're really tired, and she needs to be protected by someone who can fight."
"See Kuwabara, you *do* get to be a part of this assignment!,"Botan said, trying to encourage him.
"Yeah, wonderful."
Yusuke stretched and yawned," Well, night everyone. I'm catching some Z's, wake me when it's my turn."
With that said he walked off to another part of the temple.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Four hours later Kurama and Touya were up. It was nearly 10:30, and everything was dead quiet, except for the chirping of crickets. Kurama took turns with the ice magician patrolling the temple and standing post outside the woman's room.
Although the woman's safety was their first priority the fox demon couldn't take his mind off what he saw yesterday. He was sure it was Hiei's energy he felt in that blood. If so it meant his three eyed companion had been seriously injured, maybe even killed. Kurama shook the image away, he would not think about it. If there was one thing Hiei was good at it was surviving, being destroyed in such an uneventful way wasn't his style at all. Kurama always had the feeling that when Hiei did perish from this existence half of the Demon world would know it, and be witness to it.
His ears picked up a noise off to his right. He saw Touya returning from his round, it was time for them to switch.
"I was afraid you'd fallen asleep,"Kurama joked.
"No, I sensed something strange by the gate, but there was nothing th....."
His sentence cut short. The night air was filled with power, frightening power.
"Touya...," Kurama whispered.
"I know," He hurried off to wake the others.
Kurama called his rose whip, and took a fighting stance.
"Kurama, it's a pleasure to see you."
He spun around to find Yomi, one of the demon lords, standing before him.
"Yomi,"He said in suprise,"Why have you come here?"
"I, *we*, need to speak with the familiar."
"We?"
"Yes, we."
Kurama glanced to his left, Mukuro stood flanked by the demon he'd met the other day. They were dangerously close to the familiar's room. Kurama knew he wouldn't be able to fight all three if it came to that.
"I'm sorry, but I can't let you pass."
"We mean her no harm, in fact, we need her assistance,"Mukuro walked slowly closer to the porch. Kurama snapped his whip as a warning.
"Hold it!"
All four observed as Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Touya came racing around a corner and surrounded them. Jin flew over them a few seconds later and landed on the roof.
Yomi frowned," There is no need for this, as I said we mean the familiar no harm. We only wish to speak with her."
"Like hell we're letting you three near her!"
"Yusuke,"Mukuro said quietly," We need her help."
"For what?"
What she whispered next made everyone who heard it nearly stop breathing,"Hiei is dying."
