The Guarding of Chaos
Amnesia
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Hiei sat in a tree by the driveway of Hikari's home. He looked down quietly at the girl who waited impatiently, yet smiled, for her ride to school from her aunt. He had no idea what time it was, but by how many times she had checked her watch in the last few moments, he could tell they were late. It had been a month since that night when Hikari had completely broken down and told all to him. To Hiei is sounded something like a well constructed sob story for pity. There was no way that he could know if it was true or not. All he knew what that her brother was indeed dead. Hiei turned his eyes back to her, having been staring upward. He sighed as he felt the sudden urge to ask her what was wrong and, as before, he gave in to it.
//Something is wrong, so what is it now?// Hiei got no reply. The next time he decided to yell. //ONNA!// Hikari jumped on the ground, almost slipping on the ice that partially covered the start of her driveway.
\\Would you stop addressing me as `onna' and bother to call me Hikari?\\She knew her efforts were in vain; he hadn't called her by name yet. Or had he? She couldn't remember at the moment.
//How about answering my question, onna.// Hiei watched her shake her head. She really was annoyed by the fact that he had not called her by name. He's a heartless, cold, little… Hikari stopped her train of thought. Who amI kidding? No matter how mad I get at him for callingme onna all the time it doesn't change the fact I'mglad he's here. I'm just glad I know Japanese so Iknow what he's calling me. She looked back at her watch hoping in vain that it could take her mind off the need she had developed for company years ago and how her only company was Hiei now, egotistic and getting on her nerves.
“I'm going to be late! My aunt hasn't shown up yet,” Hikari yelled, frustrated that she could get away from the house, but to do so she had to call her aunt. So, she really is going to be late. Not that I car…right? Suddenly Hiei's body moved involuntarily. He had jumped down to the ground before he could even realize that something was going on. He picked her up and, before either of them knew it, they were a little ways in to the school's forest by the school entrance. Hikari looked at him; he was just as surprised as her. Not good. She continued to stare until, in sudden anger, she slapped him hard across the face.
“Don't ever do that again!” she yelled and ran from the wooded area into the school as fast as she could. Hiei just stood there for a second. She frickin'slapped me! Quietly, he cursed Koenma again, as well as blackmail schemes.
--
With each step Hikari took as she headed for her locker in the 8th grade hallway, anger left her body. In fact, as she sat down ten minutes before the bell rang commencing school, Hikari felt guilty for slapping Hiei. She was at school on time after all. She sighed. It hadn't taken long to learn how to use the strange link between her and Hiei and she used it now, hoping for the chance to apologize. \\Hiei…Hiei come on answer me! I wanna apologize!\\ Hiei didn't answer her at all. Could I have ticked him off thatbadly?
--
Hiei ran back to the house, through the woods behind it, all along ignoring Hikari's pleas to talk to him. Just stepping on the driveway leading up, he felt suddenly the strange feeling of a portal nearby. It wasn't a type of thing that he would just forget. How can that be!?There are no portals here, anywhere! I'm sure of it.With that Hiei ran in the direction of the feeling. Making it a ways into the forest Hiei stopped in a clearing. Taking only one more step inwards, Hiei was shocked when a Makai portal opened suddenly in front of him. He was hesitant to walk into the portal, and looked back in the direction of Hikari's home. This is mychance to get out of here.Hiei took one step back, and looked over his shoulder at the trees behind him, before shaking off his hesitation and jumping through.
--
Hiei walked through Makai for a while before he even thought about Hikari and how sure he had been that he was going to stay there for her. It doesn't matter. She's human; she shouldn't have been any of my concern in the first place. She'll survive… Stopping, he heard someone yelling. He jumped up into a tree and watched for whoever it was. A familiar red head walked in to the area.
“Kur…ama?” Hiei whispered, surprised to see him. He thought back to the day he left and the first few weeks that had followed. He had acted irrationally. He hadn't really thought things through and he had left. He felt idiotic for acting that way now; he could've gotten passed Koenma. He was a lot stronger the Reikai Prince. Faster too.
“It really would have been easier to let him find us. Nobody's seen him in over a month, which isn't unusual. Kuwabara was right; this is going to take too long.” Hold on,could he be looking for me? Koenma said that as longas I was on this mission I wasn't to abandon it forone with the rest of the `team' Hiei pondered for a moment on whether or not he should jump down there, but his train of thought broke when something black flickered at the edge of his vision. I don't rememberputting on my cloak. He shook that off as the youko below spoke to him.
“Hiei! Come on we have a mission,” Kurama yelled, adding under his breathe,
“You were hard to find, what are you doing in this part of the Makai?”
--
Yusuke leaned against the wall in his home. The mission had been relatively short, but tiring.
“Hey, where'd shorty go?” Kuwabara asked. Yusuke and Kurama both looked around but Hiei was not there.
“Maybe he just left?” Yusuke said.
“Maybe, but he was acting odd. His concentration was split it seemed,” Kurama said. Not one of the three spoke for a while.
“He didn't seem to be concentrating during the mission,” Yusuke said. Kurama shook his head.
“I just said that,”
“Really? I wasn't listening.” I can tell, Kurama thought as Yusuke began to argue with Kuwabara, both forgetting the conversation they were just having in lieu of a more interesting discussion involving fists.
--
Quietly, Hiei walked back to Hikari's. It had been strange to be on a mission with Yusuke, Kurama and Kuwabara again after being in the relatively safe area of Hikari's home and town. Six days, he had been gone six days. He wondered if Hikari had even noticed that he had disappeared, with how angry she was with him before he left. Damnitt, why should I care if she wondered where I was? He climbed the stairs of Hikari's back deck but stopped half way up. Hikari stood at the top with an undeterminable look on her face.
“You're back,” she whispered as he got to the top.
“Where were you? Why did you leave? ... I need you here.” She hugged him, burying her face in his chest. Hiei just stood there. She needed him here? His eyes widened. She really wanted him here. No motive behind it other then sheer loneliness and desperation. She had a desperate need for a companion. This time, rather then wait for her to let go, Hiei put his arms around her awkwardly.
How is it that I mean so much to her? I just got here,I'm just her guardian.
How is it that I mean so little to him? He's supposed to protect me? Doesn't that mean he should care?
--
One Month Later
“No! I'm telling you, you're not dragging me to some lake!” Hiei yelled. Hikari had him by the arm and was dragging him to a lake somewhere outside of town. It had gotten warm surprisingly fast so Hikari was ready for swimming, already!
“Hai, I'm taking you to the lake but it's not like you have to swim or anything. You're just not staying inside the house.” Unfortunately for Hiei, Hikari often didn't take no for an answer, so he was stuck going with Hikari to the lake. I don't spend as much time in the house as you seem to think. Hiei looked at her and for a second his eyes followed the shape of her form before he pulled them off of her. They continued down Main Street, then, when the crowd on the street seemed to grow, Hiei no longer felt Hikari's grasp on his arm. He looked around but could almost see nothing of the girl. He started to worry. Since coming back from the mission Hiei had felt attached to her. He didn't want some maniac trying to take her again.
“Hey! Hikari where'd you go?” he yelled to her. She did not answer though. People began to run into him and with no warning he was pushed towards the brick wall of a building. He had no way to stop but instead of hitting the wall he went through it.
“Are you alright, kid?”
“Do you think he hurt himself?”
Hiei sat up and stared while he rubbed his head. People were staring at him. His mind, after a few minutes, put two and two together. The kid they spoke of was him. He stood quickly and exited the building, trying not to gain anymore attention then he already had.
“Hiei? Hiei! There you are! Where'd ya go?” Hikari yelled.
“Umm, I don't think you'll believe me.”
“Yeah? Well try me!” she said.
“Okaaay. I went through that brick wall there.”
“You went through a wall?” Hikari said disbelievingly. Suddenly, someone ran into him again and he fell straight through a near by lamp post.
“Okay, now I believe you. You know that's kinda ghost like.” Hiei looked at her and Hikari gave him a huge grin and dragged him off to the lake, as though nothing had happened.
Once there she looked at him and spoke softly,
“You don't have to be seen. Hide in a tree if you want.” Hiei took her offer and was in the tree before Hikari could blink. Hikari smiled as she heard the familiar voice of her cousin Kyle.
“Come on Hikari! Last one in the lake has to explain to our parents why we're soaked!” Hikari smiled and stripped off her clothes she had worn over her bathing suit.
Hiei didn't look down again for a while and when he did he caught sight of more of Hikari Spirit then he had intended to. Blushing madly he avoided her body in the water and stared in a different direction. Hikari smiled in the water having noticed Hiei's blush. Well, she thought, at least someone likes how I look in my bathing suit. Hiei didn't look at the lake for a good two hours after that. \\Hiei! Come down here would you!\\ Hiei sighed. He jumped down and landed next to Hikari without thinking about where she could be. She stood on a cliff that over looked the lake she had been swimming in. She still only wore her swimsuit. She pulled him towards the ledge.
“You like the view? Haunting's Lake. That's what they call it. Spirit Lake, Haunting's Lake. Even the school's team name has to do with ghosts. They're the Poltergeists. It's funny.” She said with a faint smile on her face. Hiei stared her, she looked so happy and carefree, how could someone like her need protection? Who would hurt her? He heard something behind them but turned to late to tell what was going to happen. Before they knew it they were plummeting down to the lake below. Hikari laughed. A splashed accompanied their arrival in the lake. They surfaced only seconds apart. Hikari giggled and splashed Hiei before she heard an ominous sound echo through the air. Thunder.
“We should get out of the water,” Hikari murmured. She smiled at him and swam to the shore, Hiei right behind her. As they got out lightning struck, causing Hikari to jump and cling to Hiei. She opened her eyes as she realized that he seemed thinner then she had thought. I should get her home fast. Hiei picked her up and ran back.
Later Hikari sat up in her bed as the thunder grew louder and the lightning seemed brighter. She looked around her room. She didn't really like it all that much. The walls were bland and white and the carpet was pink, a color which she now detested. She continued to look around the room as the thunder rolled, until she stared straight into another's eyes in the room.
“Shhhh, it's just me!” Hiei said. Hikari moved the covers and stood up to looked at him better. {Was he here for a while? Why would he be in my room?} Hiei smirked.
“I was here. I wanted to make sure you were alright,” he said. I could sense fear form you.
“Hey! Don't listen to my thoughts!” she said angrily.
“I wasn't trying to. I just did, that's all. You know it just happens,” he whispered, mostly to himself. Hikari did know. It happened often to her too. She would hear a small part of his thoughts and she would wonder what had him so angry so often. She sat down again and, hesitantly, Hiei sat next to her. He looked at her. It was a look Hikari couldn't ignore, and she wasn't even sure he knew he had it on his face. To Hikari, it said that she needed to spill her guts to him about her life, again.
“I...hate thunder storms. Not just thunder storms in general though. I hate when they come at night. I was four and it was summer when the first bad storm I had ever been in hit town. It was so bad the sirens rang; there was a tornado on the ground. My parents dragged me and my brother into the basement and we hid there. I had heard my parents talking about a tornado that went through a nearby town. It was still being rebuilt a year later, the storm was so bad. The storm stopped before it hit our town. It was so close and since then I haven't been able to sleep during a storm and I'm so afraid of them even during the day!” She looked up at him embarrassed.
“Sorry, I don't know why I told you this. I'm just taking up your time.” She slipped back into bed and Hiei looked at her. Thunder flashed and he was left to just sit there. Hikari would accept nothing from him through the night.
--
Hikari sat up in bed quietly. She was surprised to see Hiei standing in the doorway.
“Ummm…..I was going to wake you up. You-” Hikari suddenly looked at her clock. It said 7:30 in big red numbers
“It's seven-thirty! I over slept!” she yelled and bounded out of the bed. Quickly she began to search her closet for something to wear.
“Why didn't you wake me, Hiei?”
“I thought you were already up! You're usually so quiet in the morning.” he muttered the last part to himself.
“Well I wasn't, as you can hopefully see! Come on why didn't you even check! Look for me in the mornings why don't ya!?” she said angrily
“I'm not exactly accustomed to finding a fourteen year old girl in the morning! Usually I don't have anyone else to look out for but myself!” he was staying calm but Hikari wasn't.
“No one to look out for but yourself, huh? Maybe going back to that would be a good idea. You're not good at this guardian thing!” Hiei just stared at the girl. Amazingly the words she had said hurt for some odd reason.
“You want me to leave, sure I'll do that,” he said and left with no trace left.
Hikari stood there for a while until the guilt overcame her. Finally, when she could stand it no longer she called to him, yet she got no answer.
“Hiei?” she whispered.
--
Quietly Hiei walked out of the house and into the woods. He would leave her alone but he was unable to leave for good as he knew she meant for him to do. He walked to the Makai portal. He hadn't thought of it since coming back to Hikari after that mission. He went through it with the thought of coming back only hours later but things never did seem to go his way, now did they?
--
Quietly, Hiei walked through the Makai with Yusuke and Kuwabara, with Kurama leading them. He had been dragged into a mission. He knew he should, but he didn't contact Hikari. Part of it was that there was little hope that Hikari would even listen to him if he did, and the other part being that he felt disgusted for fighting with a human child. Spending so much time with her was having it's affects on him. He didn't like it.
“Hey, Hiei,” Yusuke whispered.
“Hn,”
“You have any idea where we're going?”
“Hn,”
“I'll take that as a no,” he muttered and turned to Kuwabara to ask him a similar question.
--
Hiei ran as fast as he could, running back to Hikari's home. He had a bad feeling. Something was wrong and with each passing second the feeling was getting worse and worse. He made it to the back door, found it open, and was worried further. Hikari never left the door unlocked, that much he did know. He stepped inside and found the place ransacked.
“Kami,” he whispered. Hiei ran from the house. He had no clue where he was going; all he knew was that something had happened to Hikari.
A scream echoed through the woods.
“HIKARI!” he yelled. He ran in the direction of the scream and stopped at a clearing. Breath lodged in his throat and he put a hand over his mouth.
--
Hikari layed there, her body ached. Her mind raced, as breathing became hard. I'm sorry, everyone. I don't want to go now but it seems I have no choice. If I hadn't yelled at Hiei he could've protected me, but my hard to find temper just flared. I'm sorry Hiei, I didn't mean to yell, she thought as her mind clouded. In the distance she heard a voice.
“……no….”
--
Hiei just stood there and an involuntary `no' escaped his lips. He gained control once again and finally was able to move.
“No! Hikari,” he yelled as he ran towards her. He didn't know why he was so worked up he felt little attachment to her, or so he told himself. He reached her and looked at many cuts and bruises. On her chest and her abdomen were deep stab wounds. Blood poured from them and suddenly he wondered if she was even still alive. But suddenly her chest rose and fell, filling with air and exhaling it. He picked her up gently, mindful of the many wounds and noticed a wound on the back of her head. A bloodied rock told him instantly that she had fallen down, during the attack. Her eyes opened just barely.
“Hey,” she whispered her voice airy and hard to hear, “mind getting me to a hospital? You know the one in town, please Hiei?” she looked up, “They said it would rain today. Hiei, I'm sorry I yelled…..” she left off and her eyes shut and her head lolled towards him as the first rain drops fell.
“Oh no, you don't. You're not dying here, not now,” and with that Hiei did what she had said, he ran to the hospital she had pointed out so many times, getting soaked as he ran.
--
He stood at the threshold of the hospital, suddenly feeling as though it was a bad idea. But he did not get the chance to try and find someone else who would help. An EMT, standing at the reception desk filling out papers, happened to look up and notice him, soaked through, and the bloody girl he held.
“Someone better go and alert some doctors,” she whispered. She walked up to him stepping outside she soon became soaked by the rain. Gently she got him to relinquish his hold on Hikari and she whisked her inside, turning only barely while she ran to whisper,
“You did the right thing.” Hiei just continued to stand there in a daze he couldn't understand. Doctors circled around her and they wheeled her away as the rain persistently pelted Hiei, and the first streak of lighting brightened the sky and the clap of thunder sounded.
--
Jim Spirit and his wife had run into the hospital two hours after Hiei had brought Hikari in. Her cousins and her aunt were already there. Hiei had continued to let the rain pelt him for some time before he had finally stepped, some how invisibly, into the hospital. It was another thing he had found he could do. He waited only as far away from the entrance he felt comfortable with. For some reason he felt that Hikari was alright. At least partially. Something was still wrong. The doctors had been by and had briefed her family, and suddenly Hiei realized how many relatives she had. Her father wanted the person who had done this to be arrested and was angry at the EMT for letting Hiei go, figuring that he was the one at fault. But news of his daughter had quickly stopped that argument. Now he and the rest waited in her room. Waiting for her to open her light green eyes. Willing them to open. When they all left to do various things, such as eat, Hiei was left in there alone and suddenly her eyes did open. She looked at him and whispered.
“Who are you?” Hiei was shocked but answered.
“I'm Hiei remember?”
“No, I don't remember. Who am I?” Hiei just stared. She didn't remember. Just as he open his mouth to answer footsteps approached her room. He disappeared.
“Hold on! Don't leave! Help me!” Her aunt walked in and smiled.
“You'reawake.< i>Hikari are you alright?”
“Who's Hikari? Am I Hikari?” she whispered. She aunt shook her head, she understood almost instantly. Hikari had amnesia.
--
The doctors explained to Hikari's family the new condition Hikari had.
“I think it may be from the wound on her head. She was probably hit hard enough that it stole her memories. We can only wait and see how long it will be until she regains them. You need to be supportive of her alright. She doesn't remember her life, so if there are any on going arguments between her and someone else you might want to tell them.” Her family sat there dumbstruck, wishing for all the world that Hikari hadn't been the one to be attacked, no matter how sour it was to be actually wishing such a thing on another.
Hikari sat in her room confused. She didn't know who she was and it was driving her nuts. She wanted to remember the people who had walked in and spoken to her. She really did.
“This sucks,” she whispered.
“I don't s-s-see why, you seem alright,” someone whispered.
“Who are you?” Hikari asked.
“Huh? Oh me? I'm new h-h-here,” the girl whispered.
“Well then, why don't you leave? I'm here for a reason I don't remember and I ain't feeling to cool about it,” Hikari snapped. The girl looked hurt and left the room. Hiei watched. He felt horrible that because he had left, she was in there and not acting like herself at all. But what could he do?
Hikari's parents brought her home as soon as they could. They thought that the house would bring back memories. Hiei knew that the memories she got from that house would hurt her more then not having them hurt her now. Hiei had talked to her before they had left and the experience still left him confused, a state he did not like to be in and seemed to finding himself in a lot lately.
--
Hikari walked a bit behind her parents staring at the floor. Hiei had followed her for a while before speaking.
“Hikari?” She looked up and stared at him.
“Who are you?” she asked.
“That could take a while to explain.” Hikari had given him a good hard look before speaking again.
“I don't think you're real.” Hiei had been shocked by the words that had come from her mouth. The shock must have been seeable on his face.
“Oh did I hurt you? Well get over it.” She walked away.
“I just didn't know you didn't think I was real.”
--
Hiei watched Hikari and after a while could no longer stand to just watch as she faded from who she was, influenced by people others did not realize would only hurt her. He stood in front of her and she almost walked passed him but she looked back.
“What are you doing here? .......Why am I talking to someone who doesn't exist?”
“How can I not exist if you don't have memories but can see me?” Hikari stared at him.
“You know I think you're exactly like the people Shayla warned me about. Cold, heartless, and completely into yourself.” That or I'm schizophrenic.
“You can't listen to her. She doesn't know you like I do!” Actually, I don't know you. Damn! How can I help her?
“I don't care! I don't believe you so just leave!” She passed him by and left him to stand there until finally he could stand it no longer and left.
--
Standing in the living room of her home Hikari was called to the door by the bell. She walked up and opened it to be greeted by a woman in her early twenties or late teens.
“Hey, Hikari. I guess you don't remember me. I'm your cousin Alicia.”
“They said you were in New York.”
“I was. I was going to fly back and I just happened to get the call before I left so it was no trouble coming.” Hikari nodded to show she was following.
“I was supposed to give this to you a long time ago. I meant to but I lost it then I forgot and now is a good as time as any.” Out of her pocket she pulled a crystal that was red in color shaped like an emerald.
“T-thank you. I love it and I can't even imagine why. Or sorry that sounded rude. Thank you.”
“Sure. I'll see you tomorrow.” Hikari let her leave. She put on the necklace and went to bed.
Hiei walked into her room by midnight and watched her for no real reason. She was sound asleep and could only sigh. He would leave if it would help her.
“I'm……. sorry I didn't protect you.”
He left just as a light erupted from the crystal. It lifted from her neck still tethered by it's chain, and illuminated her face in the dark. Energy peaked in the room, not really demon, not really human, and left Hiei to stare. The stone, as suddenly as it had started, stopped its glowing and fell back to her neck. A sudden shock wave moved through the house knocking Hiei back into a door with such force he fell unconscious, but not before he watch changes come over her as she lay sleeping in her bed.
--
Hiei regained consciousness in the early hours of the next morning. He looked in on Hikari but she appeared to be alright. The events of the night before began to come together just as voices floated down the hall. He stood there for a moment before he bolted, not wanting to be caught by Hikari's parents. They walked down the hall holding a small discussion.
“I swear that I heard a thump from over here last night,” her father whispered. Her mother looked at him in disbelief.
“Sure you did. If such a sound was made why didn't I hear it, why didn't the dogs bark?” They continued to argue walking to Hikari's room. They looked in and found exactly what Hiei did, a contently asleep young girl.
“Hikari wouldn't have slept through something happening right outside her room. She can't even sleep through thunderstorm that's barely passing over us!” They continued to argue and by the time Hikari woke up her parents were gone, both to work, just as they had before her memories had gone. But as she stared around the room she began to remember things. Where and when different objects had been gotten. She wandered all around the house finding that nothing did not bring back a memory, good or bad. She smiled, and whispered out loud,
“Hiei, I remember, don't go.”
Hikari went to school without telling anyone. People couldn't believe that she had suddenly gotten back her memories. Everyone was happy for her but one, the girl that had hurt her and used her when her memories had been M.I.A. Hiei watched as Hikari went about her day doing the exact things she had done before. He knew she really did have her memories back, better then anyone else somehow. After school Hikari walked out, still smiling. As she reached the drive in entrance of the parking lot she spotted the girl she had snapped at in the hospital that first day. She walked up and after gathering what little courage she could muster, she spoke.
“Hi, um, you might not want to talk to me, but I need to say that I didn't mean to snap at you that day.”
“Oh really? I don't know if I s-s-s-should believe you.” Hikari looked at her and sighed. There wasn't much she could do she just hoped that the reddish haired girl would take her explanation.
“I had amnesia. I'm not normally like that. I really don't like snapping at people at all, I just didn't know that then. I know it sounds bad but it's the only answer I can give because there is only one truth about it.” The girl's grey blue eyes stared at her intently. Hikari swallowed nervously. The girl smiled.
“Okay, I'll believe that, but could you make up for it by giving me a tour of the s-school tomorrow? No one will show me around even when the teachers ask them to. By the way, my name is Kimiko O'Brian and yours is?”
“I'm Hikari Spirit, and sure I'll show you around tomorrow. I've got to get going but I'll be here as soon as I can tomorrow so we can start!” Hikari said happily. Saying good-bye, the two parted and Hikari began to walk in the direction of her cousin's home to get a ride back home. As she headed that way Hikari spotted Hiei up ahead, standing right in her path. She quickened her pace. When she stood in front of him she found that her mouth refused to work. They stood there for a while in awkward silence. Finally Hikari put down her stuff and hugged him tight. He loosely put his arms around her. Without a word spoken the two got over their separate scares -though Hiei wouldn't admit he had been worried- from the attack and the amnesia. They didn't, not even later, utter a single word of forgiveness, for none was needed. They already knew. How? That they didn't know.
--
Days later Hikari walked backwards towards her home, taking a short cut through the woods. She watched Hiei who walked a full twenty feet behind her.
“Come on Hiei! I'm walking with you not with you twenty feet behind me.” Hiei didn't answer right away. He stared at something passed her. She looked back and regretted it almost instantly. There stood the tallest thing Hikari had ever seen. Hikari heard a hissing laugh and it charged her. Then she heard Hiei's voice.
“Leave her be, Demon!” Hiei had the coldest look Hikari had ever seen on his face (aka his normal one). At his side was the sword Hikari hadn't seen since she had first met him.
“Got yourself a bodyguard, do you?” it said in a hissing voice.
“What do you mean? Who, what, oh my god did you say demon! Hiei!” He was at her side in seconds.
“Forget about her. She will die no matter what,” the demon hissed.
“Yeah, I'd like to see you try to kill her while I'm here.”
“I'll just have to get rid of you first.” The attack started. To Hikari it was nothing more then a bunch of blurs, their movement too fast for her to see. Just then they stopped. Hiei cut the demons arm down the middle then off. The demon did not seem fazed. He had no idea why. The other arm moved up and was directed at Hikari. She stood there frozen. Suddenly, the demon fired off a blast of energy. Hiei whirled around.
“Hikari! Move out of the way!” She didn't move. “Move, Damnitt!” Hiei yelled suddenly worried, almost frightened, for her life. She still didn't move and the blast hit. As Hiei stood there in a daze the demon hit him straight into a tree. Hiei sat up though he was in much pain. Just as the demon was to attack him, it was torn to pieces. In the wake of the blood shed, stood Hikari. Her eyes were different, grey in color. Her hair was a light auburn going toward the brown in color. Her hands were covered in blood.
“Hikari? You're alright! What's with your hair, your eyes?” Hiei was relieved to see her, but she advanced on her. She snarled. As soon as she was close enough she attacked him. Her nails tore into his skin on both his chest and his lower right arm tearing at the bandages that hid the Black Dragon Wave. She sniffed the air and then clutched her head as though plagued by sudden pain. She looked at him after a moment and her eyes were clearer then they had been before.
“Hiei?” she whispered. He nodded stupidly. She walked up. She touched his wound.
“You're hurt. My hands! They're covered in blood! Where'd the demon go!? Hiei?” Hiei was, to put it frankly, flabbergasted. She didn't remember what would've normally been the most horrorific thing in her life. Just as he was about to tell her what happened, he stopped. He looked away with a blush and Hikari suddenly realized why. In getting away from the blast from the demon her shirt had been destroyed. She covered her chest with her arms though she didn't feel too bad, at least her bra was intact. Hiei took off the jacket he had been wearing and handed it to her.
“Let's go home. I need a shirt and we need to stop that bleeding,” Hikari murmured, still blushing. Hiei didn't argue and followed her back.

In a nearby tree two pairs of eyes followed the action and embarrassing discovery. One pair was a shocking violet and the other was a gentle grey green. The grey green eyed stranger held a mirror and looked at the other.
“Yes,” the violet eyed man whispered, “it's begun. You know what to do. Go tell her now. Hurry. She'll be fine. You have my word Ototo-san.” The other man hesitated, and then nodded. His auburn hair fell into his face as he left. I'm not worried for her. I'm worried about him. It could pose a problem with the Forbidden Child nearby.
Elsewhere, a pair of golden yellow eyes were shut. I hope you can handle this, Annai. The woman opened her eyes and looked at the auburn haired man who now stood in front of her.

Well there it is. You have finally read the sixth chapter of The Guarding of Chaos. I hope you liked. R&R constructive criticism is welcome and flamers will be stored for winter. Thank you! My best friend, who beta's this story, chose the name for the new girl and if you happen to be an InuYasha fan, the last part of the fight with the demon will seem familiar. I didn't realize it until I wrote it down. Thanks for the reading! Ja ne!
