Chapter 4

Mistrust

"I don't trust it."

"Come again?"

"I said, I don't trust it."

Kurama regarded at the fire demon adjacent to him. His eyebrows drew together slightly. "Don't trust what?"

"That thing." Hiei glanced at the dragon, which was flying sedately in front of Yusuke, Kuwabara and Genkai. According to the noise coming from the front of their parade, Genkai had started another onslaught on Yusuke's intelligence.

"Why not? She seems to have honest intentions." Kurama looked at the dragon too, which had been leading them on path that led downward in gradual inclines. The landscape around them was rather drab, and according to Yusuke's handy map, they were among the middle levels of the Makai. If you could determine a middle, anyway.

"I don't have a real reason yet. But gut instinct tell me that thing had other motives then being a handy guide. And gut instinct hasn't been wrong thus far." Hiei glared at the composed kitsune along side him. Sometimes that fox was so dense…Still, he couldn't deny that there was something funny about that dragon, and how quick Koenma was to accept its help. How did he know that it wasn't in cohorts with whoever was behind this plot? He didn't. End of story. So why were they sent off in such haste?

Question after question chased themselves in Hiei's mind, frustrating him. Without actual proof, he couldn't justify the killing of the only lead they had. But his fingers itched for his sword.

.

"I think something's bothering shorty." Kuwabara turned his head to study the demon. He was glaring daggers at their guide, and his hands clenched into fists. "I think he's planning to kill something."

Yusuke glanced back at Hiei. "You're right. Wonder what got lodged up his ass? Ow!"

Genkai brought her hand down from the whack to Yusuke's head. "You're really going to have to learn not to be so crude."

"You old b-" Yusuke bit his tongue, lest he receive another blow to the head. He looked warily at Genkai, then back to Hiei. "I wonder what got him all worked up."

.

Ahead of them, Anthemia listened in on there conversation. So. The little fire demon doesn't trust me. To bad. He'll be dead soon at any rate, so it doesn't matter. Not like anyone else will listen to him anyhow. They all follow Koenma's orders like well trained dogs. A tiny grin lit her face. Watching them parish would be fun. She angled her head to the sky, determining the time. Syrus would want her guests at the castle in a timely manner. She'd end up using the transport spell soon anyway, but why not let them walk a little more first? Nothing like wearing down their stamina.

Syrus walked the halls of her castle, making sure everything was accurately done. They would be here soon, she knew. With brisk steps she strode through the shadows the torches created to the main hall of the castle. A double flight of stairs, exact mirror images, swept into the main entrance, spilling crimson carpeting to the marble floor. The huge doors that made up the foyer were closed now, the windows around them letting in a shallow gray light. Coming to the top of the swooping stairs, she placed her hands on the railing and looked over the entrance.

Below her, Kasha was speaking to a small nymph, almost as black as the marble beneath his feet. He nodded a few times, and then vanished in a puff of black smoke. Kasha stretched her arms above her head and looked up at Syrus. "The guards are ready, milady."

"That's excellent. They should be here soon and we must be ready. Are the demonesses ready?" Syrus made her way down the staircase to her left, hand trailing down the smooth stone railing.

"Yes. They know what they are to do." Kasha watched her come down, and a small grin tugged at her mouth. Once the boys arrived, she and her fellow demonesses were going to have some fun with them. "Lady Syrus, is it okay to scratch them?"

"Well of course. Just don't let them bleed too much. Can't have stained sheets." Syrus stood a few steps up from the ground level, eyes dancing with the though of what the poor fools were stepping into. "What fun would it be if you couldn't scratch?"

"I think were going in circles. Hey, dragon! Were exactly is this place you're leading us?" Yusuke looked up from his communicator, which showed him absolutely nothing of there current position. "Spirit World scout mustn't have made it out to far." He mumbled to Kuwabara.

"Guess not." Kuwabara glanced around nervously. Something about were they where didn't sit with him. He was getting very bad vibes from the surrounding area, and he told Yusuke such.

"Don't worry about it. I'm sure it's just because we so far into demon world you're just getting feelings that were left behind from other demons." Yusuke reached up and tweaked the dragon's tail. "Hey! I asked you a question!"

Anthemia did a midair flip and hovered before Yusuke, eyes burning. How dare he touch me! Gradually she came under control again. Syrus would not be happy if she attacked the leader. That would give away there plans, and she would be punished severely. "We are somewhat close to the place we are going. Have you tired of walking?" Anthemia did her best to be polite.

"Yes, as a matter of fact." Yusuke was a bit taken aback at the dragon's momentary ferocity. By this time Kurama and Hiei had caught up to the quartet and were watching quietly.

"Well, you should have said something sooner. I can teleport you to where we're going right now. If you would be so kind as to form a circle…" Anthemia gathered the team into a circle around her, heads bowed. Her claws started to itch at the vulnerability they had placed themselves, and how easy it would be to remove them right now. Containing her impulse, she landed on the ground and scratched three parallel marks into the ground in the middle of the circle. "Water and Fire guide us, Earth protect us, Wind, take us to where we go." With a whirl of color, the Rekai Tantai and the dragon vanished.

`Nother chapter done and done. I know that it was super short, but I wanted to save their first battle scenes for a whole chapter on its own. I hope you continue to enjoy this fic of mine.

Reviewer of Destiny: If this was going to have any romance I would have added that to the genre when I started it. You can look forward to some lemony scenes (how intense will depend on my mood), but other than that its going to be rather bloody and full of morbid connotations. I already have the death of two characters planned, and I'm not entirely sure that this story is even going to have a happy ending. So if you want romance and mush, I would suggest another story.

ShadowBlue: I'm glad you like it. I have a tendency to really draw out emotion and descriptions, so please tell me if I start dragging out scenes and such to the point of being boring.

hColleen: I was wondering if anyone would catch that! Good job for paying attention, and that will get fully explained a little later on, since it was touched on in this chapter.
