Melissa's Point of View
It was dark in the forest of Japan with its rolling hills and monstrous trees. The moon shone brightly on the river, casting shadows in every which direction. I sat on the bank, Indian style with my dagger in hand watching the fish dart around trying to take on the under current, though failing miserably. I let my fingers slide over the slick blade as I gazed down at the pitiful scene. My hazel eyes glazed over in contentment as I thought about it all.
“Pathetic…” I whispered to myself as I watched them fight for their meaningless lives. I cursed under my breath as those thoughts filled my head; death, murder, poor souls being driven out of their bodies. These didn't belong to me. This wasn't how I was.
“Melissa, let's go. I found some food.” Sarah's voice echoed in my head as she came running from the thick brush to inform me of something we had been searching for. I didn't stir nor turn to look at her. “Hey! Did you hear me?!” She growled in annoyance. She hated it when I would space out into oblivion. I sighed deeply and finally turned to face her, my short, light blue hair with a purple hue swinging behind me.
“Yes, I heard you. I'm coming.” I answered her with a fake smile plastered on my face. She rolled her blue/green eyes and crossed her arms over her chest clad in a black tank top. She leaned on a tree while I looked over her form from her head to her feet. The vibrancy of her short, crimson hair contrasted with her perfect, pale skin. Dark denim jeans were tucked into black combat boots as she let her leg swing in front of her as she waited for me. A black tattoo of the Japanese symbol for fortune was imprinted on her right forearm. I pushed myself off the ground and dusted my black jeans clean, straightening my blood red, v-neck t-shirt. My hair only reached to the middle of my neck with side bangs, a strand on each side was longer than the rest, going down to my shoulders. I also had a tattoo on my arm though it was on my left and was a black swirl that wrapped around twice. Two small filled in circles rested within and around it, one right outside the margin and one within. This, however, was natural.
“I don't understand why you insist on sitting here in the moonlight.” She mumbled under her breath as I walked over to her. She enjoyed the darkness, especially during the night when the air was thick with the scent of honeydew and fresh grass. I rolled my eyes at her incoherent grumbling and followed her to the site we had been forced to create. With my family dead, and her not having one to begin with, we looked to the wild, spacious woods and forests of the country to aide as our home. Stepping closer I saw the clearing of grass with a fire set up in the middle, the light making our trail visible and easier to maneuver in. Our things were placed in our own little piles around it as if in a circle. My things consisted of clothing and weapons such as my two beautiful desert eagle pistols, a selection of knives that I kept in a protective pouch, and one katana. Also I possessed a few books and a journal I let no one read. Sarah owned clothes as well with about two daggers, a hand gun and her own katana. A big black coffin, closed, sat to the left with a lock on the front. I was not told of what was inside it and I didn't bother asking. It was her business and we respected each others privacy. Putting my dagger back in its strap at my hip, I sighed as I looked about for this `food' she had found for the two of us.
“Where is it?” I asked her. Sarah went to stoke the fire with a long stick of wet wood to make sure it didn't die on us while I sat on the opposite side of her, the pit in between us. She said nothing in response to my question. Instead, she continued to stare into the fire longingly as if she wanted to consume it within herself to fight off any demons she held inside. I merely narrowed my eyes down at her. I mean, she pulled me away from my thoughts just to watch her think?
“It's over here Melissa, don't get all ruffled up.” She said in a monotone voice as she pulled up a plate of fish and used her telekinesis to hand it over to me. I took it from her and stared down at it, wrinkling my nose. Living in the wilderness didn't offer many varieties.
“Ugh, fish. We always have fish.” I groaned, digging my fork into the meat that was before me.
“That's all we can have for now until the bigger game comes back from hibernating.” Sarah snapped at me. I knew I would have to deal with what we had but with the cold front coming in and ruining our fun, we weren't in the best of moods. I was a koorime, an ice demon, so the cold did nothing to me and with Sarah being a fire kitsune, it didn't bother her either. She could always warm herself up. Though with the changes in the climate, the animals fled, leaving us in immense boredom as we tried to come up with interesting things to do.
“Did you eat?” I asked while swallowing down the meal.
“I will in a minute, I'm not very hungry at the moment.” She answered, her eyes scanning over the woods. I could tell she was thinking about the past, something that not even I had known. I met her when I was 12, when we would both abide by the rules. She was the same age as me and we hit it off, I guess is what you could call it and have been the best of friends ever since. We are now both 16 though she is older by a few weeks. We could read each other like a book and when one of us reached a subject we didn't want to talk about, we left it alone until we brought it up another time where either I or she would spill our guts but that hasn't happened in a while.
“What are you thinking about?” I wanted to know. She always said I was a little too curious for my own good.
“Hn. What do you think?” She retorted with a smirk plastered on her face. I did the same and let my eyes wander over to the black coffin at her side. “And you?” She began to ask until I put my hand up to stop her in mid sentence.
“Do you feel that?” It was as if eyes were watching us and I was never wrong about this particular thing. The air was empty of its usual musk and now it smelled of demon. Not us of course but that of a powerful male. Her head shifted up and about to look for the culprits that dared to enter our territory.
“It's a man…no…three men.” I sniffed the air as I said this, making sure I was correct, that of which I was. Her eyes landed on one particular part of the forest behind me.
“Over there.” Was all she said as we stood from our sitting positions. I turned to where she was looking and clenched my left hand into a fist, letting the other rest on the hilt of my dagger I carried around with me wherever I went.
“What are you here for?!” Sarah asked the being in a stern tone, demanding to know who would tread on our claimed land. This person merely chuckled as red eyes were seen coming closer, now accompanied with emerald green ones.
“Hn. Put your pathetic weapons away; we aren't here to hurt you.” He said. Once they came into the light I wanted to laugh a bit. The red eyed one was about 5'3 in height and wore all black, his hair spiked up with a white starburst in the middle. He may have been short but he was very muscular I could see, meaning he was very strong. The cloak he was wearing covered his arms in sleeves and a white scarf hung around his neck along with a bandana over his forehead.
`Sarah, he possesses the jagan.' I informed her through telepathy. She nodded in return as we waited for them to explain their business here.
“I am Kurama and this is Hiei.” Kurama replied. He had long blood red hair and green eyes, as I stated before, with a hidden power inside him, I could feel it. This wasn't his natural form which made me stay on guard whether or not Hiei said they weren't a threat. He wore black slacks with black robes over it, white fabric framing the edges to give it color. His arms were free of any material and he smelled human. He seemed nice, young and smart and if that was the case he was a hard competitor to beat.
“What do you want and where is the third one of the group?” I replied and just as I said this another man stepped out from the shadows. He had black, slicked back hair and chestnut brown eyes. The white t-shirt he wore was tucked into ripped up, fitted jeans with cuts and bruises all over his arms and legs.
“Damn Kurama, you could have told me you set up eating vines around the woods so no one would follow us.” He stated, now aggravated.
“Eh, sorry Yusuke. I thought you knew.” The red head replied with a sweat drop. Sarah was now breathing heavily, getting very annoyed with this unannounced meeting.
“QUIT with the conversation and tell us what the fuck you want!” She yelled, the birds flying out of their nests in fear of her voice. Hiei turned his head to stare into Sarah's eyes. His crimson irises were without emotion, I noticed as he smirked at her.
“Hn. Detective, I think you owe these bakas an explanation of why we are here.” He stated in a cocky fashion as he didn't tear away from Sarah's gaze. I raised a brow and waited for someone to say something pertaining to their appearance. I kept my hand on my dagger, tearing it out of its sheath as I saw the `detective' pull something out of his jean pocket.
“I'm Yusuke Urameshi, spirit detective for the Spirit World. And we need your help looking for this guy.” He began, bringing up a picture of a fairly good looking teenage man.
“His name is Asher Mitorome, 16.” He continued. My eyes widened as I saw the figure staring back at me inside the paper confinement. He had black short hair that was parted in the middle though it wasn't brushed; piercing blue eyes stared back at me. He had perfect light skin and full lips that curled into an evil smirk. He wore a cream colored jacket that went down to the middle of his thighs, open to show a white, button down, collared shirt. The collar on his jacket was black as well as the cuffs, and black dress pants were seen to finish off the out fit as he was leaping into the air when the snapshot was taken.
“He is one of the most feared villains here. He has murdered dozens and terrorized hundreds. We need your help and your skills to put him into confinement before he kills anybody else.” Kurama interrupted my thoughts as my mouth was open slightly at the shock that had settled within me. Hiei rolled his eyes as his team mate said this, clearly annoyed that the one they were after was so feared, more so than he was. Sarah shook her head as she recognized the figure as well.
“You expect us to catch him?” She asked with a smug smirk on her face, her eyes darting over to me for a quick glance and then back up at Hiei. He shook his head with his arms crossing over his chest.
“Hn. No, we're asking for help.” The word seemed to sting his mouth as he forced it out. He wasn't one to ask and was now really pissed that he was being forced to.
“I won't do it. I'm not helping anyone catch him.” I finally said, walking back over to where my things were; wanting to be away from them. Yusuke turned to look at me as he put the picture back into his pocket.
“You have to or else Prince Koenma will be on your ass, and do you really want to have to deal with the stupid toddler?” He asked me. I shook my head at this and glared menacingly at him.
“I will not be helping!” I snapped, breaking a twig for emphasis to throw behind me into the fire that still burned in the center of our camp.
“Neither will I.” Sarah stepped in, walking back to her side of the small field as well. Hiei resigned himself to leaning his back on a tree, looking down. He didn't want to be there and so he didn't feel he should be the one to convince us otherwise. Yusuke however, had to being as it was his actual job.
“Your powers are greater than we thought and would be a great asset to the team if he decides to take action against us.” Sarah couldn't help but let out a small laugh as Yusuke said this. She lowered herself onto the top of her coffin as a seat.
“By the looks of it I doubt you could find anything of value let alone a highly feared criminal.” She scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest once more. I raised a brow curiously and crossed my legs to sit Indian style. Hiei glared down at us hard with a low growl.
“Well we caught Hiei; I think we catch this one.” Yusuke faintly smile, shoving his hands into his pockets. The fire youkai in question growled even louder at this.
“You didn't catch me detective, it was mere luck.” He spat, making the boy roll his eyes with a small laugh. Sarah crossed a leg over her knee and leaned forward.
“And do you expect to capture said demon?” She asked. This caught my attention greatly. I needed to know how they would come about finding him.
“Hn. Yusuke will use his stupid intuition and miraculously find a way only seconds before he is killed like all the other times.” Hiei butted in. Yusuke narrowed his eyes down at him.
“Do you want me to beat your ass? Cause I will!” He spat. Kurama sighed as his friend got into fighting stance, his hands curled into fists and his legs apart for balancing.
“You beat me? HAH!” The cocky smaller demon laughed while pulling the katana from its rightful home.
“Ahem! Please, we are on a case. I do not think Koenma wished for us to get side tracked and I doubt these two ladies would like to see a fight right now.” Kurama stated in a firm yet light tone.
“Grrr, fine! Join the team then.” Hiei snarled, putting his weapon back into its sheath. Yusuke turned to look over at us wanting to hear our answers once again, hoping they would be different this time.
“You won't find him.” I replied.
“You act as if you know him.” Yusuke responded with a raised brow.
`If she did then it would be a lot easier to find him.' He thought to himself, though he was wrong.
`Or it could make things harder.' Hiei listened in and gave his input on the situation. Sarah smirked, waiting for my response as well.
“You could say that but we don't speak. I see him from time to time and we just stare, nothing more.” I lied.
“You know he is a felon and yet you do nothing?” Kurama asked, now offended by my lack of concern for others.
“He has done nothing to hurt me or anyone around me so I don't strike. It would be suicide to get into a fight with him.” I answered him. Kurama's eyes flickered with intense disgust as he looked at me. I let a villain get away countless times knowing he was killing others and did nothing about it, something about that to him just wasn't right. But did he know the real story? No. So I let him think whatever he wanted. It didn't matter to me. Hiei listened carefully to every word I said though his eyes stuck to Sarah's face like glue. Something about her had him mesmerized and he just couldn't put his finger on it.
“Well, enough with the small talk, chit-chat. Are you joining the team or not?” Yusuke demanded to know.
“What do I get in return?” we asked in unison. There was always a price to be paid for our services and what we didn't want; we wouldn't take meaning the job was not to be done, at least not by us.
“A home…us…food that you don't have to gut yourself, T.V….” Yusuke named off random things. A home did sound nice after all these years of being forced to live out here. And something other than fish seemed just likely to hit the spot in my stomach, no matter what it was.
“Hm…fine. But you stay away from me unless I say I want you there or I come to you. You do not touch my things either!” I negotiated. They all nodded their heads and then shifted their eyes to get Sarah's requests. Hiei's eyes stared into hers as if diving into her soul and this she couldn't tear herself away from. He was so familiar in the way he looked, maybe a little bit older but there were just some things that didn't change with age. She didn't want to go, she had no reason to but something was scratching at her insides, making her want to say yes.
“…ok…I'll join your stupid team but if you open this or touch my things as well, you're all dead and I am not kidding around.” She answered. The others shook their heads in understanding.
“We will be back tomorrow to lead you back to Genkai's temple where you will be staying. This should give you time to pack your things for the move…” Kurama informed us. And with that they were gone just as fast as they had come. I shifted my gaze to look over at Sarah. She sighed, not wanting to leave. We both loved the fact that we were isolated but sometimes it got lonely even though we had each other. With us having to go into towns and meet other people, I knew Sarah would not remember the social manners she once barely required. I grew up with being forced to be polite towards others, always doing what they wanted whether or not I liked the event or thing in question. This, however, was going to be something new.
“…Do you think this is a wise decision?” I asked her curiously. She exhaled deeply as she stuffed a few things into her claimed duffle bag.
“Honestly?...” She answered a question of her own. “No. I think it's foolish, Melissa.” She seemed a little exhausted and irritated at the same time. “What do you think will happen if they ever do find him, Huh?! What then?!” She snapped.
“They won't.” I glared, putting my dagger and sheath to the side and into my bag.
“Hn. Right, and how do you know?” She replied disbelievingly.
“I don't but he's not that stupid and I won't let him!” I snapped back. “Stop worrying about him or me and pay attention to your sweet little coffin!” I added in anger and aggravation. She let out a low throaty growl and glowered down at me.
“Fine, but if things backfire on you, don't some crying to me!” She stated with a snap of her katana being slid into its sheath to solidify that we had just had a nasty argument. I knew she was lying, we would always be there for each other and we would be on good terms soon but right now was not the time to make it worse so I shut my mouth and went back to my own packing though it was a quick job. She laid out a blanket to lie on and spread her limbs for a good nights rest. Her back faced me and it looked as if she were sleeping but anyone that knew her would know she barely ever did sleep. Not here. Instead, her eyes stay snapped open, staring off into the woods with animals such as squirrels and birds darting around. She not once missed a movement they made but this she didn't care about. If you looked at her you would think she didn't have a care in the world or that she just care for the planet we lived on but if you looked closely, and I mean really close, I bet you could find something that you could fear more than the thought of there being no reason behind life, and that my friend would be a terrible thing to see. Something worse than that could mean the end of all things as we know it, or at least the end of her. I slipped under my thin sheet on top of another to shield myself of the grimy dirt and gazed up at the many stars. People always said that the stars held their destiny and many times I wanted to just shout my questions and hope they could answer them in truth. But that was just a myth and so I let my eyes slowly droop closed into a deep sleep. My next journey was in the hands of myself and the one hidden within.
