Yukina awoke suddenly. She looked carefully around her room and listened intently for unnatural sounds that her demonic sense of hearing might pick up, but nothing was out of the ordinary.

She bit her bottom lip and creased her brow in confusion. What had woken her up?

She released her youki, sending it over the temple grounds and a mile into the Dark Forest.

Her eyes lit up in surprise when she sensed it again; the familiar warmth of another’s youki that she had not sensed in four years and had not ever expected to sense again.

She quickly but quietly pulled the robe Keiko had given her for the Christmas holiday the rest of the group had been excited about over her shoulders and slid open the rice paper door.

She listened carefully for any sounds that the master of the temple might make upon awakening.

Genkai had not been sleeping well the past couple months, waking at the slightest of noises or sometimes not even sleeping at all, and it had Yukina very worried, which was why she had slipped an extra herb into the old master’s tea earlier that night.

She silently plodded away from the temple’s sleeping quarters and in the general direction she had sensed the visitor’s presence in.
----
She was at the tree line when she first called for him.

“Hiei-san? Hiei-san, can you hear me?”

She whispered it, loathe to the idea of breaking the night’s silence.

“Hiei-san?”

She pulled the terry cloth robe tighter around her body to fight off the pre-dawn chill of winter as she stalked through the wild undergrowth.

As a koorime she did not mind the cold, but she did mind the wet, and the humid climate in Japan was difficult to acclimate to, despite living there for as long as she had.

“You shouldn’t be out at this time of night.”

It was not the warmest greeting she had ever received - nowhere near it, actually - but she knew not to expect a hug from the demon who stood behind her.

Of course, that did not mean she could not hug him.

“Hiei-san!”

The fire demon was, to say the least, shocked when Yukina latched herself onto him.

“Hiei-san, you’re back,” she said with a soft smile.

“Hn,” he grunted as he turned his head to the side, refusing to return the unbidden affection the koorime had offered.

“Hiei-san, come inside, please,” she pleaded and Hiei could not refuse. Then again, he had never been able to refuse her; the affection he held for his sister kept him from doing anything that might cause her to feel any sort of pain or dissatisfaction.
----
“Would you like some tea, Hiei-san? It is quite cold out,” the gentle koorime offered as she walked into the kitchen.

“Do not worry about me,” Hiei mumbled his reply, “My heritage keeps me plenty warm.”

“Oh, of course,” Yukina cried, “Hiei-san is of fire.”

That had not been what he meant, but it had been what he wanted her to glean from it. The truth was, while his fire demon heritage did allow him to raise his body temperature a couple degrees during cold nights, it was his koorime heritage that allowed him to brush temperature aside so easily. Just like his sister’s, his koorime blood thrived on colder weather.

“Here you are, Hiei-san,” Yukina cut into his thoughts.

Hiei looked down questioningly and stared blankly at the cup of hot herbal tea Yukina had placed in his hands.

“I told you I did not need it.”

“But I wanted to make Hiei-san some tea,” Yukina replied, her kind smile drifting into a troubled frown.

Upon seeing her change in mood, Hiei quickly took a sip from the cup, and when he caught Yukina’s attention, downed the cup, mentally relaxing as the hot liquid poured down his throat, warming every part of him.

Yukina was smiling again, glad that she had done something for Hiei because he had done so much for her - even so much as looking for her brother.

It was just too bad that he was as good as dead, or so Hiei had told her.

Yukina shook herself out of her thoughts before she could slip into a funk, “Everybody will be so happy to hear that Hiei-san has returned.”

Hiei froze.

That was exactly what he had been fearing.

While he had come back to watch over his sister many times throughout the past couple years he had been away, he had not wanted to be caught. That had not changed any this time.

Tonight had been completely his mistake, and when he realized that he had woken Yukina he had dashed off, mentally cursing and berating himself for his stupidity in going so near to his sister’s room.

He had not expected her to come after him; but here he was, drinking tea with her at three in the morning.

“You should sleep,” he finally said once he regained his composure.

“I am youkai, too,” Yukina replied, “I do not need more than four hours of sleep and I already had six. Plus, I normally wake up around four to prepare breakfast for Genkai-sama, and by the time I fall back asleep it will be near time for me to wake up once more.”

Hiei scowled; he had wanted to sneak off once she fell back to sleep.

If he left quietly enough, he could get back to Makai without having to deal with any of his former teammates.

That plan, it appeared, was quickly falling apart at the seams.

“Do you not want to see the others?”

Hiei remained silent and Yukina sighed softly before taking another sip of her own tea.

“They miss Hiei-san,” she began, “Kurama-san and Yusuke-san and Kazuma-san all miss Hiei-san.”

Hiei raised an eyebrow at her.

“It is true,” she argued, “They come to visit Genkai-sama and me quite often and they wonder how Hiei-san is doing.”

The night’s silence filtered into the conversation and several moments passed before Yukina dare ask the question on her tongue.

“Why did Hiei-san not contact anyone or come back?”

A tense silence followed.

Hiei refused to meet her eyes.

“Hiei-san?”

“Many reasons,” he tersely spat before standing up.
“I must go.”

“Hiei-san, please don’t leave,” Yukina begged as she rushed over to Hiei and grabbed onto his arm, “Kurama-san, Yusuke-san, and Kazuma-san are not the only ones who missed Hiei-san. I missed Hiei-san just as much as them. I missed talking with Hiei-san and being in Hiei-san’s company.”

Hiei looked down at the koorime who stood just three inches shorter than him and his eyes widened in disbelief and panic as he saw the teary sheen that had invaded her crimson eyes.

She quickly averted her gaze.

“I will never know my brother, but I am sure he would have liked Hiei-san because Hiei-san is so kind to me,” Yukina said as an aquamarine gem hit the floor. Hiei watched it fall.

“If I was to have ever met my brother, though, I am sure he would have been just like Hiei-san.”

Another tear pinged when it hit the floor.

“Hiei-san always watched over me.”

A third gem fell.

“Hiei-san was always there for me.”

A small pile of the precious aquamarine tear gems had begun to amass on the floor and Hiei could do nothing but watch as it slowly grew.

“I missed Hiei-san so much when he left because Hiei-san is like a brother to me.”

“Don’t cry.”

Yukina looked up to see a torn look in the fire demon’s eyes.

“Don’t cry,” Hiei repeated hoarsely, “Don’t ever cry. Your tears are too priceless to waste on me.”

“I could never waste a tear on Hiei-san, just as much as I could never waste a tear on my brother,” Yukina replied honestly as she dried her eyes, “Both mean so much to me. I care so much for them.”

Hiei froze and worked at swallowing a lump that had formed in the back of his throat. There was a slight pressure building behind his eyes, too, but he fought it back and it died away.

The look of surprise and awe at his sister did not disappear, though.

He watched as she bent down and picked up the healthy amount of tear gems that had gathered at her feet and handed one to Hiei with a small smile.

“Because I cried for Hiei-san,” was all she would say.

She walked into a hallway and returned fifteen minutes later in light blue slacks and a white blouse. Her hair was brushed and out of her face and she no longer held the pile of tear gems in her palms either.

“Hiei-san will of course stay for breakfast?” she asked and, once again, Hiei could not deny his sister what she asked.
