Sensui's words would never roll off of Nari's shoulders as she watched her growing son play around a bit with the chain that Nari would on occasion dangle in front of him like a playful kitten with a ball of yarn. Lying out on her side in her stall once more, she rested her other free hand upon her cheek so to keep her head off of the straw that obviously needed to be cleaned out and replaced. Managing a smirk for her overexcited mix bred son, Nari eventually embraced Okuro to bring him close to her chest with a toothy smile.
Okuro eyed his mother with a wag of his puffy fox tail, reaching for her cheeks. “Mommy,” he spoke clearly since obviously calling her that made his mother happy.
Hearing the opening and closing of the barn doors, Nari listened to the way the feet sounded when hitting the hard ground beneath them as they came closer to her stall door so she could attempt to pinpoint who it was due to each person to her walked a certain way. It didn't sound like the way her masters' carried themselves so it made Nari relax realizing they weren't coming to drag her out and humiliate her some more. Keeping her emerald eyes fixed on the bars on her door and the lock, she watched as Candy, her African American neighbor was drug back to her cell by the wolf demon that owned her. Seeing the way the once proud Candy was now covering her face with her stringy, unkempt hair the way all broken slaves did that were female—even the males did that when their hair got long enough in attempts to hide from the shame they felt after being raped and humiliated in every way possible, made her frown with a furrow of her brow. Obviously over time, she gave up and caved in just like all the others did before her and it made Nari pity her as she had herself.
“Get in there,” the wolf demon growled, pushing her back inside with his large palm pressing against Candy's abused back.
Candy wasn't expecting the harsh push, causing her to fall upon her palms and side into the straw of her stall. Clearing her sinuses a bit, she looked up at her master a moment before eyeing her bruised hands not saying anything to him as she used to since she knew the rules now and learned to obey them.
Nari waited until the demon closed the door to his slave's stall and locked it angrily before storming off. Obviously he wasn't too happy about something and Nari could only wonder what got up his nose. Keeping her son close to her abused form, she cupped the side of his head a moment before kissing him in between his ears and standing to her hurting feet. Pressing her face against the bars that were her only window into Candy's stall above the wood that came up to her chest, she peeked inside to make sure she was okay. “Candy—are you alright?”
Candy waited until the slamming of the barn doors could be heard before bothering to get to her feet steadily and answer her, “I want to get the hell out of here.”
Nari kept her eyes on the struggling Candy watching as she came close to her side of the bars so the two could exchange hurting expressions. “Candy, it will be impossible for us to get out of here…trust me…I've tried…”
“You tried to escape before?” Candy asked quietly amongst the moaning and sniffling slaves within the barn. “Why didn't they kill you?”
Nari could only shrug while looking down at her son that was nuzzled right at her left leg. “I guess because of me making it so long as it is but right now I am wishing they had done so. I've been whipped to death by Master Yoko Kurama's Rose Whip and sexually assaulted by his plants…I have more or less survived Yomi's brutal beatings when he is drunk and sober.” Nari's voice was starting to crack as she was forced to remember all of these things once more but she knew no matter what was to happen, she would be tormented with these images for life.
Candy leaned against one of the bars on her side, only able to hear the sounds Okuro was making in order to tell who was there. “But you at least got a son to help bear some of the burden and be the one thing if anything to make you smile.”
Nari's broken emerald eyes shifted down at her son before bothering to pick him up into her embrace. “I didn't ask for him to endure this with me,” Nari whispered, cupping the back of Okuro's blond, white hair. “He's just a little boy.”
The neighboring woman looked over her shoulder a moment at the other stalls around them as if not wanting the eavesdroppers to hear what she had to say next. “What about your bat master—Master Kuronue was it?”
A jolt of surprise smashed into Nari's weak body making her open her mouth in the same shocked manner. “How would you know about that…?!”
“Kiddo, please,” Candy snickered silently, “everyone in here knows about that and are pretty much making bets behind your back on what the two of you may end up doing. Kuronue has been confronted by that Yomi guy about the issue several times in front of the other demons and some of the slaves have seen it. I mean he wears that necklace you made for God's sake.”
Letting the shock of hearing that subside, Nari ran her fingers through her son's hair for the time being to help settle him after playing around. “I don't know what we are going to do. Master Kuronue says he cannot leave with me because of Master Yoko being his best friend and he doesn't want to betray him.”
“Then you're screwed just like the rest of us,” Candy seemed to hiss with anger. “But at least I have my death to look forward to.”
“And for that I envy you,” Nari remarked with tears brimming on her eye's ridge as her face contorted in pain.
Candy eventually disappeared within her stall to lie down until the next time she would be dragged out leaving Nari alone once more since her other neighbor was never verbal towards her. Looking out at the barred window that was her only view to the forest and sky outside, she sniffled a bit trying to keep her sinuses under control. Looking at the moon that was eventually taking the place of the setting sun, Nari gazed at her son with a heavy, forlorn sigh. “See that, Okuro?” She asked her yawning son. “Eventually we will be free and our lives will be okay…we will manage back in America regardless of what you are…if my parents haven't forgotten about me, we can live with them again.”
The human teen noticed that Okuro was getting exhausted for once unlike the other nights where he would wake her up randomly just to play around or cry that he was thirsty or uncomfortable. Seeing that all the sleep they could get would be helpful for the coming day, Nari lowered herself back down to her bedding that needed to be changed bringing her son close to her body so he would know she was there. Letting her child fall asleep first, Nari sighed through her nostrils wondering if she could truly get out of Makai as she had hoped she could in the beginning.
Knowing that dwelling on it wouldn't do any good Nari let the tolls of the day take over her body, and closed her eyes to fell asleep next to her boy.
------------------------------------
The seasons seemed to pass by slower with an eternal life and one year seemed as though it was a century to someone such as Nari. The two further years that Nari endured took their toll on her body and mind. The now twenty year old battered woman stood at 5'6 thanks to the two inches that she gained when continuing to grow under the demon's watch when she was brought to Makai at fourteen. Her uneven, unkempt blond hair reached down to her waist now from where it once stood about her chin making it difficult for her to bathe at times concerning how much there now was. The scars and marks on her body continued to come nearly covering her entire body but they were not as frequent as they used to when she continued to be disobedient. The only time they raised a hand to her now was if they felt she was acting too slowly to their needs or she was badmouthing them with her facial features. But what astounded everyone about Nari over the two years was she had pretty much given up expressing her pain or the way they forced themselves on her. The human woman just took it with the same neutral expression she gained and with the cold heart she was given thanks to all she had endured. The demons claimed they broke her finally and in a way they did—they broke Nari's spirits and hopes of ever being free again.
Kuronue watched from a distance in the lounging room in the hideout as Yoko Kurama took her this time during the dinner the demons were consuming since Yomi was talking it up with one of the other demons and not interested in Nari at the moment. The bat demon noticed the sudden break inside of Nari and could only sympathize for her though he knew it was bound to happen the older she got. She was now like a caged bird that couldn't survive on her own even if she tried to be free or was let go. Whether out there in the Human World or deep in the depths of Makai, Nari would be walked all over even killed without the help of one of her masters and Kuronue knew this only able to wonder what to do with her now.
Listening to the laughing and good time her master was having, Nari only stared down at her hands that she placed upon her damaged thighs when sitting next to Yoko Kurama's feet. The harsh tug on her chain and collar made Nari flinch for a moment before she finally got to her feet knowing that her master wanted her to stand. Turning to look him in the eyes a moment to know she was listening before looking down at the ground to hide behind her hair, Nari stood there slightly bent over waiting for his next motion.
“Such an obedient bitch she has become,” the female demon next to Yoko Kurama remarked with her legs crossed and her brown hair flowing over her left eye to hide it from anyone who looked at her. From the look of her, she looked human enough though her abnormally sharp nails would tell you otherwise as would the slit eyes. “If only I could get my slave to listen to me as yours does.” Here, the woman felt prompted to kick at the back of the seventeen, Asian male that was close to her feet.
“Trust me, it took me awhile to get this one to respond,” the fox demon growled with a smirk.
Nari watched as the demon spread his legs to pat his inner thigh, a signal she had seen on occasion and one Yomi and Yoko Kurama enjoyed playing out in front of the other demons. Knowing she would have to do this sexual move in front of everyone else used to embarrass Nari and she even threatened to bolt on several occasions until she finally just gave up and gave in. Kneeling before him, she worked away at his sash to pull it off and then reveal his demonic, hidden size. It was still hard to take him in at times but Nari forced herself to grit and bear it tired of being smacked around for not listening to her masters.
Kuronue could only stay put and watch since he had to give Nari over to the others concerning she was not just his though the want to keep her by his side grew intensely with Nari's human body. Even if she was injected with demon DNA, she would still be able to grow to at least look in her late-twenties or so depending on the body and how it reacted to the injection they gave her. Looking through his visor and long dark indigo bangs, Kuronue could only turn from the sexual attention she was forced to give Yoko Kurama in front of everyone. Turning his consideration down to his red wine, the demon was interrupted by someone nearby that was enjoying his discomfort.
“I see Yoko Kurama is enjoying that little slut of yours,” Suzu remarked, the snake demon's body slithering across the floor as she made her way towards Kuronue.
Knowing who it was, Kuronue darned not look the woman in the face, knowing he would sooner punch her then speak with her.
Seeing that he was trying to ignore her, Suzu could only smirk before bringing her hands upon his shoulders. “I know what you're conspiring in that brain of yours,” Suzu hissed within Kuronue's elfin ears as her poisonous nails twirled about strands of his hair. “Having to see her with your best friend torments you so, doesn't it?”
“You're testing me, snake,” Kuronue growled coldly, pushing her hands off of his shoulders as he went back to eyeing his wine glass and the small amount that was still within there.
Suzu pulled back her hands before grinning once more, looking back over at Nari and Yoko Kurama before inviting herself near the bat demon's ear once more. “Look at them,” the snake woman insisted, using her tail to direct Kuronue's face back towards what was going on. “You cannot tell me that it doesn't bother you. I know it bothers you—because you want to believe she is yours.”
Forcing himself away from the nosy Suzu, Kuronue bared his teeth at her to show he was infuriated with her and her actions. “Touch me like that again, and you will regret it!” He warned quietly so only they could hear and those nearby. “As far as my relationship with my slave goes, that is NONE of your concern!”
Frowning at the demon's choice of words, Suzu stood her ground, letting Kuronue storm right past her so that he could excuse himself to go outside. Turning her attention over her shoulder to watch the doors shut from Kuronue's departure, Suzu looked back over at Nari and Yoko Kurama for a moment that were on the crimson sofa.
Nari pulled back from Yoko Kurama's spent member, a bit of the release he forced into her throat dripping from the corner of her mouth since there was only so much she could take from a demon's member. After cleaning herself up a bit, Suzu and the other nearby demons watched as Yoko Kurama waved her to fetch something for him to eat at the table and saw the human slave listen and obey without a word or gesture of rebellion.
Though watching the bitch of a human getting bossed around and sworn at was something grand to watch for a demon such as her, Suzu still felt Kuronue's remarks making her blood boil over.
Kuronue continued onward into the cold winter night that was still about them not wishing to witness that display anymore even if it was his best friend. Every time he had to watch such a sexual show, it made him feel betrayed and he didn't want to swear on his best friend's name.
Before he could dwell on it anymore from where he leaned upon the tree beside him, somebody's claws attacked Kuronue's exposed right cheek causing him to hiss in surprise from the sudden sting and attack dealt him. Removing the hand that he used to cup the injured flesh, he saw that his own demonic blood was mating with said hand before eyeing his attacker.
“You bastard, I will teach you to raise your voice at me!” Suzu hissed with a slip of her forked tongue.
“You dare attack me when I am much stronger than you, wench?” Kuronue asked not in the mood for this.
Suzu said nothing as she supported herself on her snake body helping her to try and look intimidating as possible to the bat demon as she now towered over him. “Admit it, Kuronue that thoughts of leaving here with that stupid human bitch have crossed your mind! You will be the next to fall at your own best friend's hands when you do!”
Only using his hands and not getting out his scythe, Kuronue dodged Suzu's attempt to come down upon him and pinned the snake demon against the tree he was once leaning against face first when he came from behind her. Keeping her there with a fist full of her hair to keep Suzu from moving, he snarled within her ear this time. “The decisions I make are my own and not for someone such as you to drag out and smear within my face. And if one of those decisions is to make off with Nari, then that is MY decision and my sin to repent for. In which case, I will forfeit for with my life.” Releasing her hair with a harsh jerk of his hand, Kuronue stepped back to eye Suzu angrily while his slightly labored breath of anger shown there upon the winter air. “Attack me again, and I will not let you live to do so again.”
Suzu could only now rest against the trunk of the tree laughing evilly at the back of the bat demon that was turned to her. “You will crack soon enough, Kuronue. You will crack like an egg and it will all be over for you and that stupid child you keep under your wings!”
Kuronue stopped a moment to listen to her for a second, not knowing what to say to it all because it was becoming further annoying to hear her speak and the more he tried to defend himself, the more the snake demon hissed. Laugh and enjoy this while you can just like all the others are, snake, Kuronue thought heading back inside to go to his bedchambers knowing he would be safer there from anything that was to bother him.
Hearing the shut of the door, Okuro's black ears wiggled slightly before looking over to see his father standing there not looking too happy, “Daddy…? Why you upset?”
Turning his attention to his now five year old son, he bent down to pick Okuro up. The little mix-breed's hair was a bit longer and fuller now from when he was just a little thing and his ears were growing just a bit as was his tail that he gained from his birth father. He was learning to speak a bit better being around Kuronue a lot more frequently than his mother since she was never allowed to speak around her masters and the words Yomi and Yoko Kurama used, Okuro had been drilled not to say ever, ever again. The only way he could learn to speak was to hear others talk so Kuronue kept him at times and spoke to Okuro as he grew and allowed the child to copy after him.
“It's nothing, kiddo,” Kuronue answered getting over near the fire so they could both get warm. Sitting upon his carpet that rested in front of his fireplace and was the only light within his room, he watched as Okuro eyed the necklace he wore and was made by Nari. Placing his hand upon Okuro's, he managed a sincere smile to him, “You like that? It was made by your mother and given to me.”
“Where is mommy?” Okuro asked, leaning against his father's well built chest.
Kuronue sighed a bit through his nostrils, keeping his half human son warm in front of the dancing flames and with his body heat. “She's with one of her masters, son, and I cannot tear her from Yoko Kurama for he owns your mother.”
“I thought you belonged with mommy,” Okuro remarked continuing to look at the necklace that held Nari's blood within it.
The demon was stumped on how to answer that one. Sure Nari did but she belonged to two other powerful males as well and he couldn't deny that one. But in the eyes of a growing child mothers and fathers were supposed to be side by side, and not with any other male and it was confusing Okuro as an infant. “It's hard to explain, Okuro, but I am going to speak with your mother when it comes my time to see her and I promise everything will be straightened out.”
When it was time for Yoko Kurama to give up Nari, he got to his feet when the demons were all retreating to their bedrooms for the night as others went off to raid with Yoko Kurama's consent. “Alright, bitch, move it,” the fox demon demanded, kicking her side not too harshly at the moment but just enough to get her moving.
Nari got to her feet as she was ordered to do so, keeping her mouth shut as she did though she was quite weary and wanted to be dragged to where she would be sleeping since her strength was obviously gone for the day. Embracing her cold body, she kept her head lowered so she wouldn't insult her masters waiting for them to decide what to do with her for the evening.
Yomi watched from the table where he was drinking his last bit of beer before bothering to come over to the leader of the thieves. “Yoko Kurama,” Yomi began, “how about I take the little wench for the night even if it is Kuronue's turn for her? I feel this bitch screws with his head and she has been messing with him for the past two years now.”
The fox demon's pure white ears moved slightly forward at Yomi's suggestion considering it at first but knew he could not deny his friend a time with the bitch even if what Yomi said was true. Eyeing the slave that was next to him, Yoko Kurama relocated his attention back on his partner. “Maybe so, Yomi, but I don't think it best to repudiate Kuronue a chance to see the whore he cares so much about…even if I do fear a change in him.”
Hearing Yoko Kurama's response made Yomi growl, creasing his brow in an angered expression as the two walked past him to head to Kuronue's bedchambers. “Yoko Kurama—will you let this continue?!” Yomi asked furiously.
Hearing the tone that Yomi was carrying forced Yoko Kurama to stop and Nari to beg in her mind several times that Yoko wouldn't cave in and let Yomi take her.
“He is going to end up doing something crazy,” Yomi continued. “Don't tell me you don't see it in his eyes every time you speak with him! If I am right, you will have to destroy Kuronue and I doubt either one of you wants that.”
“What should any of this matter to you?” Yoko Kurama eventually asked, letting his ears lie lazily about his skull. “If I have to kill Kuronue then it is only a problem between him and me. As far as the bitch goes—she will remain with us so don't fret over her meaningless life if that is what worries you.”
“Maybe,” Yomi muttered under his breath angrily once Yoko Kurama turned his back on him to head to Kuronue's room, “but if you don't watch those two, everything we've worked for is going to crumble.”
Knocking on Kuronue's door with his knuckles, Yoko waited for the door to crack open before opening his hand to reveal the chain within it to his friend. “As promised, here is the brat so she can tend to that other brat of hers.”
When Kuronue reached for the chain to take it, Yoko Kurama kept a firm grip on part of it so to catch the bat demon's attention once more. “What is it?”
“Promise me you won't do something we will both regret,” Yoko Kurama begged with a serious expression keeping his golden eyes fixed on Kuronue's indigo.
“I can't promise that…” Kuronue said honestly, closing his eyes in regret.
Nari watched from behind her stringy hair as the two continued to stare at one another once Kuronue opened his eyes once more to eye his friend. The silent gestures between the two were really starting to rattle her since her two masters had never done this in front of her before. What's going on…?
“One hour then,” Yoko Kurama replied releasing the chain finally.
“One hour,” Kuronue agreed with a nod of his head. “Thank you, Yoko Kurama for giving me that much...”
“I still say you're making a mistake,” was all that the fox demon could utter before heading to his bedroom at the end of the right hallway.
Kuronue said nothing to that as he helped Nari inside of his bedroom to where Okuro was dead asleep for the night on top of the bed where the demon last placed him. Helping her over near the fireplace since he could imagine she was cold thanks to the hideout not being well heated, he grabbed a heavy blanket to wrap around her to help aid in the warming process. “Okuro is asleep and doing just fine. I need to get you warm before heading outside for a moment with you.”
“Outside?” Nari questioned silently so as not to make Okuro stir.
“Yes, I need to take you outside to talk to you about something so enjoy the warmth in here while you can,” Kuronue warned, “for I need to speak with you far away from here.”
“Away from here…?” Nari could only ask once more as her matured, womanly expression eyed Kuronue. “Is something wrong?”
Kuronue didn't say anything to that for he couldn't figure what to say. He was still trying to think of how to put this all together for when he guided her out beyond the hideout's boundaries. Sighing through his nostrils and seeming downhearted, he got to his feet from where he was sitting next to Nari, “Tell me when you are ready and we will leave…”
Nari kept the blanket wrapped tightly about her small, abused frame with her mouth slightly parted in wonder at everyone's sudden attitude change. Thinking to herself for the time being, she brought her knees to her chest and embraced them while rocking herself a bit. I wonder what is wrong.
------------------------------------
Kuronue eventually led Nari out of the hideout and took her into his arms so he could head at an incredible speed to the area he had set in mind to take her. The bat demon left behind Okuro, letting the child sleep for the night and not involving him in something he knew wouldn't end well for him either way.
The wind whipping about Nari's long unkempt hair, entangling it with Kuronue's, she looked under the visor that hid the demon's face from time to time and noticed the worried expression that consumed him. To know Kuronue was worried, surfaced a feeling Nari hadn't felt in awhile due to her immortality and new obedience—fear.
The two eventually getting out of the forest that seemed to stretch forever, Kuronue stopped upon a cliff that seemed to overlook every bit of Makai. Putting down Nari in the blanket he let her stay wrapped up within, he walked to the very edge of it to let the human woman see what all was out there for the time being. “Quite the world down here, don't you think? Being a slave to us, you never really see it.”
Nari let the wind continue to toss her hair about ruthlessly as she peered through her stringy, dirty blond hair at the distant mountains that stood tall and showed boundaries to the majestic forest and villages scattered below them. The world of Makai seemed to go on forever and for a moment it seemed as though she was peering into one of her old nature books back at home. “It's so beautiful…more beautiful than I ever pictured it was beyond my stall window.”
“I guess you never imagined—Hell is it what Americans call it—ever looked like this,” Kuronue remarked looking at Nari's side profile.
“I always thought Hell looked like a big lava pit of some kind with demons dwelling inside of it or something along those lines,” Nari confessed with her same stern expression she had gained over the long hard two years she survived through.
Seeing that same cold, hard expression made Kuronue furrow his brow, “Times down here have really made you hard and have changed you, kiddo. I expected it but I was praying…”
Hearing Kuronue's voice trail off caused Nari to cock her brow at him, “Praying what Kuronue?”
Closing his narrow eyes a moment, the demon reopened them to show the same worry that he held in his eyes on the way to where they stood. He was acting as though this would be the last time they would see one another and Nari's heart was continuing to ache with fearful wonder. “I was praying I could get you out of here before that had happened to you. For those that manage to stay awhile in Makai, they either become fearful like Sara or they become coldhearted. As selfish or peculiar as it sounds, I was hoping for the other.”
“Get me—out of here…?” Nari asked, widening her eyes at the sound of that, hope actually coming back to her once again. “Are you serious?! Are you going to get me out of here with Okuro?!”
Kuronue couldn't help but widen his eyes in surprise at her sudden reaction before smiling sincerely to her. “Well, there's that old Nari spunk again.”
“Master Kuronue, are you being serious when you say you will try to get me out of here?” Nari wanted to know, placing her hands upon his open vest that revealed his chest. “If so, why didn't you bring Okuro with us…?”
“Sweetheart,” Kuronue sighed, gripping onto her wrists, “I cannot leave with you just yet. I promise I will try to pull you from the shackles that are binding you here but you have to understand—I can only try…”
“At least you'll try,” Nari thought with relief, resting her head on his chest for a moment fearing she would break the rules she had set up for herself and cry.
Keeping his back to the forest, he embraced the woman in front of him with a heavy sigh that only he could hear over the roaring winter wind. Pushing back a bit so he could look into her eyes though still keeping her in his arms, he leaned down to press his lips against hers to kiss her deeply.
Nari accepted his deep kiss, holding onto his shoulders to anchor her body as she titled her head to the left, pressing her tongue gently against his that dared come into her mouth to taste her. Closing her eyes, she savored his taste for awhile before parting reluctantly, “Kuronue…why did you bring me out here? Was it to tell me all of this?”
Seeming to be swamped with apprehension once more, Kuronue looked out beyond Nari a moment. “There is a story that every thief in Yoko Kurama's guild knows of that happened a little before your time here about a demon and his slave.”
Nari listened to the seriousness that was in his tone wondering where this was heading though not liking the feel of the atmosphere from the moment the first word surfaced from his lips.
“Well, the demon tried to run away with his slave and free her because he fell in love with her,” Kuronue sighed heavily, hanging his head a moment. “But, when Yoko Kurama found out…he came to kill them both at this very spot.”
Hearing this made Nari's heart sink as she knew what the demon was now hinting and why he would try if anything to free her. “Kuronue—you…”
“Don't worry about me,” Kuronue insisted placing his hands on her waist that the blanket covered. “I will still try to get you out of here and somewhere you will be safe—with Okuro and myself since you are not allowed in Human World again.”
Looking up at the bat demon still, she furrowed her brow in worry until he kissed her upon her forehead. Resting her forehead against Kuronue's, they enjoyed one another's company until four vines broke from the thick forest behind Kuronue to grab onto his arms, neck, and torso to pull him backward away from Nari's arms.
“Kuronue!” Nari screamed, feeling his body leave hers in a blink of an eye and seeing the tree vines pulling at his body ruthlessly.
Kuronue grabbed onto his scythe though it was rather difficult concerning how tightly the vines had embraced his arms to keep them in place at his sides. Grabbing onto his only weapon in due time, the bat demon slashed away at the greenery to free himself and turn towards his known attacker.
The dark figure hiding in the forest eventually surfaced to reveal the fox demon with a sorrowful yet stern look upon his face as he confronted his best friend. “Kuronue, I am sorry, but you broke our rules and for that—I have to kill you, my friend.”
Nobody spoke for awhile after Yoko Kurama's announcement as Nari remained near the edge of the cliff in fear with the two strong demons staring one another down.
